My wife and I had been looking forward to trying Hoh River Brewery since we moved to the area a few months ago. The South Sound's brewery game is *weak,* and Hoh seemed promising. So on a rainy day, we loaded up the family and some card games and headed to Tumwater for some beer and good times. We walked in at 2:00 pm on the dot on a Saturday. Literally no one else was patronizing the place at the time. As it happened, neither would we. We were immediately informed that the place is 21 and over only. Look, 21+ establishments are fine. Whether it's for compliance reasons or just because the owners want a spot free from kids for adults to relax in a quiet atmosphere, I get it. I don't think it's a smart business decision if you can avoid it, but I get it. My *problem* isn't with the policy. My problem is their lack of transparency about it. It should be on their website front and center, not under the "when to find us" tab with their hours. They should also, at the *very* least, have a sign on the door like a normal 21+ establishment so you don't even walk in with kids. We didn't see a sign before or after entering, and if there just had been some warning, I wouldn't be writing this. As an example, here is the text from an event on Facebook: "Heads up, Tumwater and Olympia -- we're heading your way! Mark your calendars for 12/10 and join us for our pre-order pick-up event where we bring the best of our bakery to you! Swing by to pick up your order and indulge in a wide selection of refreshing lagers, delightfully smooth sours, and more from our friends at Hoh River Brewery " (This was I believe written by a guest vendor, but just an example of when mentioning age restrictions wouldn't hurt.) Here is from their FB page header: "Craft brewery in Tumwater with Hoh River connections. Combined taproom with a distillery." On their business website, there is no mention of age restrictions until you get to the "when to find us" page. There are plenty of family-friendly breweries/taprooms in the area (we went to Triceratops Brewing after being rejected here), so it isn't weird for us to expect that here. And again, I'd be fine with them being 21+ only IF THEY WERE UP FRONT ABOUT IT SO I DIDN'T DRIVE 20 MINUTES TO GET THERE! This review is a heads up to readers, and a plea to the owners to be more up front about the restrictions on Facebook and their website. It's naive at best and rude and idiotic at worst.

Prices and selection are average. This is a local company that has ties to JBLM. One of their popular items in Pennsyltucky which they call a Yuenling dupe, since Yuenling is not distributed on the west coast but is highly requested by many transplants to the state of Washington. You be the judge! The location is situated in the middle of what appears to be a craft district/industrial area. It could be a fun place to visit on nice days and depending on who the food vendor is and if there is entertainment. Also other breweries and such in the immediate vicinity.

This little area near the airport seems to be the brewing epicenter of Olympia. Triceratops has high quality beer in a relaxed environment. The two times we were there they had a baseball game and a football game on the TV. It doesn't seem as "trendy" or "hip" as other breweries, but I'm not always interested in a trendy brewery. Sometimes I want to try a new beer on tap while watching the game. It helps that the garage door is open creating a hybrid outdoor/indoor environment. The last time I was there I enjoyed their red ale. My wife and I don't find many red ales that we like but I'm always searching for the elusive, quality red ale. Triceratops has a good red ale.

Second, their draft list offers a variety of beers at a good price. Third, they have an awesome outdoor area. Fourth, and this is worth stressing for businesses in Oregon and Washington, they are INDOOR dog friendly! Yes, they don't have an internal kitchen and this decision is precisely why your furry friend doesn't have to die in the cold or get wet in the rain. Only suggestion I really have is it would be great to see a few more options for beer brewed outside the PNW (of course, this is NW Beerwerks so I get it). But seriously, this place is great and you and your hopefully very friendly dog should frequent it.

Such a great place to stop and enjoy beer or beer tasting!…read more They offer flights of 4 from the on tap selection which changes frequently depending on the season. There's so much seating in front, inside at the bar, inside at the nook rooms (it's a house converted to a tap room), as well are more outside seating on the side and in the back! The barstools are lovely and heavy. So sturdy and comfortable for being iron and wood. The service is always friendly and welcoming, offering suggestions and will go out of their way to try and locate a beer if you were looking for something specific (they may just have more in stock in their storage area so don't be afraid to ask if you want a beer that you don't see in the coolers for can/bottle purchase). This is just a great place to relax and enjoy! There's food trucks next door but I'm not sure what their hours are. I was there Sunday in the afternoon and the food trucks were closed. But you can bring in outside food anyway and don't have to rely on just those trucks.

I ended up calling (twice - nobody answered the first time) and got an order over the phone. I headed down there and the first thing I noticed is that the building needs work. There is a tin roof siding kind of thing along the entire front of the restaurant. It is old. Paint coming off. Not a good sign. Went into the bar as I didn't realize there was a separate bar and restaurant. I didn't see any signs showing that. I was directed by a bartender to go to the other side to get my order. A very nice blonde girl was there and went to bagging my order getting my chowder and everything else which took 5 to 6 minutes. It was over $64 with the tip. Got back to my hotel room to try my french dip. Problem is, they forgot the dip - no au jus. It is just warm roast beef in a bun. No flavor. Nothing to it. I couldn't even finish a half of it. The tater tots were bad. Half were soggy. No seasoning. No flavor. Not worth eating. The pickle was good, but wrapped in a napkin kind of thing that made my hands messy trying to unwrap it to eat it. Next up was the clam chowder. It was yellow, so I assumed it was a corn chowder. It is neither. It smells like a ham chowder and tastes like a vegetable/potato soup. It is very watery and had big pieces of celery and other veggies. I have no idea what this is supposed to be, but it is not a clam chowder. Finally, I got chipotle wings. They appear to have been a dry rub. I had hoped they either would come with a chipotle sauce to dip them in or they would be sauced wings. They were neither. Being a dry rub, they had a hint of chipotle flavor, but basically tasted like bare wings. My wife got a pasta bread thing of some kind. She had 4 bites and that was it. $64 for about 10 total bites of food. I hate to waste that money and throw away so much food, but I'd be doing homeless people a disservice by giving it away. To recap, building is old looking. Forgot an important part of one of the dishes. Soggy, unseasoned tots. Watery, "clam" chowder that that is really a potato/veggie soup, wings with almost no flavor - may as well have just asked for bare, unseasoned wings. Wasted $64.
