I genuinely find it in bad form…read more Sometimes, though, a business does something- not necessarily good or bad - that bears mentioning for the benefit of the public. My wife and I had been looking forward to trying Hoh River Brewery since we moved to the area a few months ago. The South Sound's brewery game is *weak,* and Hoh seemed promising. So on a rainy day, we loaded up the family and some card games and headed to Tumwater for some beer and good times. We walked in at 2:00 pm on the dot on a Saturday. Literally no one else was patronizing the place at the time. As it happened, neither would we. We were immediately informed that the place is 21 and over only. Look, 21+ establishments are fine. Whether it's for compliance reasons or just because the owners want a spot free from kids for adults to relax in a quiet atmosphere, I get it. I don't think it's a smart business decision if you can avoid it, but I get it. My *problem* isn't with the policy. My problem is their lack of transparency about it. It should be on their website front and center, not under the "when to find us" tab with their hours. They should also, at the *very* least, have a sign on the door like a normal 21+ establishment so you don't even walk in with kids. We didn't see a sign before or after entering, and if there just had been some warning, I wouldn't be writing this. As an example, here is the text from an event on Facebook: "Heads up, Tumwater and Olympia -- we're heading your way! Mark your calendars for 12/10 and join us for our pre-order pick-up event where we bring the best of our bakery to you! Swing by to pick up your order and indulge in a wide selection of refreshing lagers, delightfully smooth sours, and more from our friends at Hoh River Brewery " (This was I believe written by a guest vendor, but just an example of when mentioning age restrictions wouldn't hurt.) Here is from their FB page header: "Craft brewery in Tumwater with Hoh River connections. Combined taproom with a distillery." On their business website, there is no mention of age restrictions until you get to the "when to find us" page. There are plenty of family-friendly breweries/taprooms in the area (we went to Triceratops Brewing after being rejected here), so it isn't weird for us to expect that here. And again, I'd be fine with them being 21+ only IF THEY WERE UP FRONT ABOUT IT SO I DIDN'T DRIVE 20 MINUTES TO GET THERE! This review is a heads up to readers, and a plea to the owners to be more up front about the restrictions on Facebook and their website. It's naive at best and rude and idiotic at worst.

To be clear, I have been coming to Endless Sound since shortly after it opened and am a wine club member. I was at the winery with friends this evening when I watched this unfold. Melody came in with a man and small child and was told to take a seat. Mark (the owner) was single-handedly managing 20-25 people while preparing for the wine and cheesecake pairing. Shortly after sitting down, Melody got up and went to the counter where she proceeded to verbally accost Mark at a high enough volume where she could be heard throughout the space. She did not allow Mark the chance to respond to her, nor did she ever try to engage with him in a less confrontational manner. After sitting, she sat and waited. She never tried to flag him down. Instead, she went straight to a verbal altercation with a raised voice, in which she made an absolute scene and embarrassed herself. She immediately ran to Yelp and left this review. Frankly, she should be ashamed. To call Mark a racist is also deeply problematic to me. As someone who has been coming to this winery since shortly after it opened, I have never once seen Mark treat anyone with something less than absolute respect and kindness. Melody's accusation has malicious intent, and frankly, maybe she was having a bad day, but Mark is a phenomenal human and welcoming to all. For those of you looking for a real opinion, this is an incredible local spot with great wines, awesome ambiance, a ton of cool events, and a wonderful and knowledgeable winemaker. You will see beers that have familiar names from the Gig Harbor Brewing days like Dead Man's Island IPA for example but a lot of them are also brand new and offer something new from the predecessor. The Dock Street location is pretty great and a significant improvement over the previous Tacoma location as it is right off of Thea Foss Waterway, the marina there and the walkway. There is a drawback here if you are the type of person that isn't a fan of paid parking and more than likely that is what you will need to is is pay to park which you didn't have to at the previous location unless you want a long walk ahead of you which isn't necessarily a bad thing. One good thing with doing paid parking here in Tacoma is that the rates are fairly inexpensive and you can get quite a bit of meter time for a small cost. I had no issues with service like another Yelper experienced and was served in a prompt manner the two times I have been to the Dock Street location. The beers are fairly tasty and refreshing and it's a nice place to chill. If it's nice outside they have a nice space for outdoor seating and the inside isn't bad either. Between the two seating spaces one could seat quite a few people here. But onto the beers and what I thought about them thus far. Dead Man's Island is an IPA that I really enjoyed and rated quite high on Untappd. This very appealing IPA has a tropical flavor to it and is smooth in body and is Light Bodied. Harry Henderson was another one of the beers I have had recently and I liked this one fairly well. With this Brown Ale the flavor highlights in this beer are maltiness, nuttiness, bitterness and a clean finish. 4 Forest was another beer that I really liked and also rated highly on Untappd. This is a Wheat Beer which I do enjoy getting due to the biscuity or breadiness that these beers have going on. No exception to here with this beer. It's light bodied and perfect for enjoying on a warm summer day. Grand Glacier was another beer we got to try. This one is a Porter and it was good one. The roastiness as well as presence of chocolate and some coffee is all right there and we enjoyed this one considerably. After that moved into IPA territory again in which I got the Imperial IPA on two occasions... the Hop Valley IPA. This IPA also has a tropical personality as well as piney and hoppiness going on. It's a nice, smooth beer for sure. We feel like we did a well rounded experience with the beer types the brewery offers and have been quite pleased. I often walk a ways after work and a frequent destination walk is the Thea Foss area when the weather is at least somewhat cooperative so if time allows I can see myself slipping in here during my outing for a beer. I have already indulged on this temptation once and I am sure more of these after work visits will pop up again from time to time.

Prices and selection are average. This is a local company that has ties to JBLM. One of their popular items in Pennsyltucky which they call a Yuenling dupe, since Yuenling is not distributed on the west coast but is highly requested by many transplants to the state of Washington. You be the judge! The location is situated in the middle of what appears to be a craft district/industrial area. It could be a fun place to visit on nice days and depending on who the food vendor is and if there is entertainment. Also other breweries and such in the immediate vicinity.

This little area near the airport seems to be the brewing epicenter of Olympia. Triceratops has high quality beer in a relaxed environment. The two times we were there they had a baseball game and a football game on the TV. It doesn't seem as "trendy" or "hip" as other breweries, but I'm not always interested in a trendy brewery. Sometimes I want to try a new beer on tap while watching the game. It helps that the garage door is open creating a hybrid outdoor/indoor environment. The last time I was there I enjoyed their red ale. My wife and I don't find many red ales that we like but I'm always searching for the elusive, quality red ale. Triceratops has a good red ale.

We had a small taster set of a few of their different spirits which were great. Everything we had was wonderful and Steve bought a bottle of vodka I believe to take home. The staff were wonderful as they were very friendly and took us around on a small tour going over the distilling process and the history of the equipment there. This was a great stop and one worth making stops at whenever you are nearby. I also believe you can get their products online or at select stores.
