My Arrow the Airedale, canine star of stage and screen, was 8 weeks old when we began training with Jay Andors of Perfect Behavior Dog Training. Initially, I had contacted Jay to help me with "hand stripping", a particular technique for grooming wire coated dogs. He explained that the very first step in grooming, for any dog, is to train for obedience-- such as tolerating standing still, lying down, sitting-- and wow, did that make sense! Jay was fatherly, kind, patient, and had a clear syllabus of graded challenges and behaviors with which to follow over the course of the weeks of sessions that we had with him. He took the time to understand what my goals were for both home life and the dream of having my dog work alongside me either as an animal assisted therapy dog (I was an occupational therapist) or as a showbiz dog (my other career). Jay helped me develop these goals and dream both big and small. And thus, our sessions extended way beyond grooming-- to loose-leash walking, developing Arrow's attention and focus, targeting (we went from my puppy simply touching a target with his nose or paw, to opening handicap/ accessible doors when he was tall and strong enough!), and much more-- all when he was just months old! By the time he was 13 months old, Arrow had acquired his first professional gig-- as "Sandy" at the 92nd St Y's production of "Annie". I originally had met Jay as a groomer for my anxious mini schnauzer, Dita, as a referral from Dita's previous trainer when I moved to the UWS. After meeting with him, we discussed extending Dita's training with him as my former trainer didn't service the UWS. It was perfect because Jay caught up with my former trainer to ensure that Dita's training wasn't interrupted just because she had someone new! In terms of scheduling, Jay is very flexible and always sends a reminder. I just want to share what great value we got out of our virtual consultation with Jay for our two year old Blue Merle Collie Brady - actually the only thing that Jay could not do was physically work the dog! It was a close second though! Jay is such an excellent coach that without stressing the dog (or me!) he was able to coach me through evaluating certain problems that we have been struggling to correct with Brady and suggesting a training plan for each behavior that he then walked through with us the first few times to lock it in. Jay is definitely a groomer with a ton of experience and he does good work, so I'm not cutting my review down because of his work, but because of Jay's attitude towards me, which I am so long overdue to update this review on. Overall my pup is an extremely excitable and squirmy pup, she was more so then compared to how she is now thanks to age and maturity. However, when I was trying to work with Jay, he was helpful by sending me a lot of instructions on working to get her to par for grooming. On the negative side, he also set some unrealistic expectations for me as an owner to work on conditioning my pup to handling. He made me feel sub-par when it comes to training my pup and for those who know me realize I have spent a ton of time and hours on end to train my pup and she's gotten so good at being handled, but it takes time. He expected that within less than a month's time that my then adolescent pup would sit still and be positioned without squirming or moving, especially given she had just completed surgery at the time. Plus to call her wild and indicating I wasn't doing enough or training her right put me extremely at unease and I decided to no longer use him moving forward. I get that Jay wants to create a positive experience for the dog by not resorting to having them in a restraint, that is the ideal for any dog... but the reality is that puppies are a handful for various reasons and a good groomer will help you work through it without making you feel terrible. Thankfully I have since moved on to find wonderful groomers who are equipped to handle my pup in a positive manner and have great customer service skills by not making me feel sub par for the work I do with my dog... especially as she's earned a few titles along the way in terms of obedience and skills! read more

I didn't know what to make of this place, based on the name. But when I went to the website to do a little research, it became immediately clear to me the owner, Jay, is more than a basic dog groomer. His credentials and inventive approach to dog bathing are truly something to marvel at! I prefer to bathe my dog myself - but not in my own home. There aren't a lot of places that allow for that - most are typical grooming salons. But at Hydrosurge, you have the option of either professional grooming or self-serve with Jay's helpful guidance. The bath tubs are huge, and first are filled up with soap and water. You place your dog inside, and a hose contraption recycles fresh water with soap for you to spray your dog down. Jay will help you with protective eyedrops for your dog, and at the end of the bath, you'll give your dog some ear drops as well. My big guy smells great, shed a lot of old fur, and is wiped out after the affair - an extra plus :) He was very comfortable the whole time, and I'll definitely head back! read more

We rescued our little guy three months ago from North Shore. He is four years old and spent those years in a puppy mill. He's made huge progress but we knew that grooming would be a challenge and we wanted him to have the best possible experience. After much online searching/researching we decided that Jay would be the best option (at the time, we still weren't sure how great it would be). When we called to inquire and told Jay the situation he offered to come in early on a Sunday for the appointment. He wanted to give our dog the best possible experience and wanted it to be quiet so our dog wasn't scared by completely new variables. He understood that the grooming would be tough enough. Long story short, Jay made us and our dog feel so comfortable and it was definitely the best possible option. We will be coming back and as everyone else said, Jay is so knowledgeable we learned a lot in addition to just getting our pup groomed. He truly cares about dogs (and their owners). We had our first appointment w Jay and HydroSurge yesterday. Our husky Cavalier was in desperate need of a bath, and after hearing some good things about this place, we wanted to give it a try. Overall, we were very satisfied with our experience, for the following reasons: 1. Jay is a grooming guru! the guy oozes with knowledge and passion about pets, the proper bathing process, even the right amount of soap suds. We definitely felt comfortable working with Jay. 2. Clean, soft coat: We have a high maintenance pup, he's got allergies, and has sensitive skin. Our dog was very comfortable and relaxed during our visit, especially during the bath. seemed like he actually enjoyed it, which is not usually the case. But don't let this stop you from trying it, Jay is wonderful - he teaches you how to use the facility and it's obvious that he loves animals. My dog, Max, suffered a traumatic eye injury (he was severely bitten and lost vision in his eye) After Max healed he wouldn't let anyone near his eyes. He also need grooming badly. Today was truly the BEST grooming experience my doggies have had in their six years!! I have two little yorkies, who were having some dry, itchy skin and dandruff problems. I took my cat Azul in to Jay today for a hygienic cut. Jay was great!! He was waiting for me at the door and immediately took me downstairs for the cut. Jay was very knowledgeable and quick with the cut! For cats he charges by the hour and he finished the cut in 15 minutes so it was extremely affordable. I have a 35 pound rescue dog, Maxwell, that I love very much, but he has a lot of issues - he is perceived as aggressive by most, he urinates in the apartment, cries or barks when he wants something until he gets it, barks loudly when he hears any noise, air bites at people when they try to pet him, guards his food and other objects, cannot be around other dogs, growls and snares at other people on walks, is triggered by loud noises and children, and the list goes on... Also Maxwell has pancreatitis, so his food and treat intake is limited. I first contacted Jay in a place of desperation, really not knowing if Maxwell could function in a small apartment in a busy part of the city. With my input and feedback, Jay developed a strategy to manage Maxwell on walks and stop the urinating in the apartment (our top priories). With Jay's training, Maxwell has improved dramatically on walks, I can now walk him and not worry that he will bark loudly at people or children, lunge at people or dogs, or become startled and reactive due to loud noises. This was complete in six to seven sessions. We are also working on crate shaping, so Maxwell will go in the crate during the day and stop the urination in the apartment. Jay takes my desperate calls, emails, and texts at most hours, and is always available to talk through the dog crises that are evolving. Jay was our last resort, we have tried other training methods that haven't worked, and no one else will take Maxwell because of his aggressive tendencies. Jay really cares about Maxwell, and it shows in his work and concern. My husband is in federal law enforcement and I am an attorney, so neither of us have a lot of time for training. Now we use walks as training sessions, and about 20 additional minutes in the apartment each day. We currently meet with Jay once a week, but hope to increase that in the near future. I really don't know if Maxwell will ever be a perfectly behaved dog, but with Jay's assistance I think we can manage him and keep everyone safe. Jay is an absolutely wonderful trainer! I have a three year old husky that was scared to go on walks because he had anxiety from hearing loud noises. In NYC there are loud noises everywhere, it's inevitable. Jay was patient with my dog and got him adjusted to walking on a loose leash and walking politely (no tugging) amidst his fear of loud noises. Jay always sends video updates and great notes after training my dog. His rates are perfect and from just three months of consistent training my dogs attitude did a full 360. Jay is hands down the best groomer in the city. I first started using Jay to groom my Havanese shortly after she was spade at 6 months -- until then, I washed and groomed her. Jay's hydrosurge method really, really cleans your dog well. I left the Upper West Side and settled into sending my dog to groomers in Park Slope and other parts of Brooklyn, but was never that pleased -- sure, they put a pretty ribbon on her, but they were never as clean as when Jay washed her. Fast forward five years later, my poor dog is having some serious skin issues, so I took the 90 minute train ride from Carroll Gardens to the UWS. Jay gave her a medicated bath and the cleansing got read of all her dead skin and revealed little "pimples" all over her body, which turned out to be a bacteria infection. Now, I wash my dog at least once a week and I never saw these pimples before. He recommended I get my dog to a vet for a check up, which I did today as well. Never again. Brought my Spanish Water Dog to him to have her shaved down, which is the standard for this breed. Not sure if his clipper was dull and he clearly didn't finish her with scissors, but lots of stray clumps of hair on her legs and torso. Her rear quarters are completed shaved to the skin - bad job there. Ears not finished off evenly at all. Just a sloppy job all around. I'm not convinced he bathed her as she just feels slimy. Would not recommend at all and would urge you to find another groomer. I found him on the internet after my regular groomer retired; I guess I was taken in by all the hype on his webpage - but don't be fooled. Never again. read more

I just spoke with this person on the phone about cat grooming. Be prepared to pay $45 for a sanitary clip (just clip under the tail, 10-15 min) which is ridiculous even for NYC. This guy charges $170 an hour for cats and proceeded to lecture me about the risk he takes clipping cats. After speaking with him I would never take my cat to his business! He was so crotchety! I also phoned another business in the UWS that would do the sanitary clip as a complimentary service because it was so quick. Just because they offered that, I would pay full price ($150) for a full grooming. read more
