Myles gave me a quick and thorough demonstration on how to care for my newly purchased kitchen knife. He showed me what I needed for long term care and maintenance of the knife blade and handle. So I've been coming to this store for over 20 years and have spent thousands of dollars on knives and sharpening services and have sent countless chefs and cooks to their store. They have an amazing selection and the sharpening services have a great turnaround, typically same day or next day pickup. I recently brought all my knives in for sharpening. They accidentally turned one of my single bevel knives into a double bevel blade. Oops. I was bummed of course but after a short discussion they made it right by replacing the knife with essentially the same model, a $300 value. In today's economy businesses tend to be less likely to do the right thing. I greatly appreciate them owning their mistake and making it right. Read some of the reviews but was not deterred, came by and had these folks sharpen some of my new knives purchased in Japan, 3 knives, a Gyotu (Chefs knife), a Usuba (vegetable knife) and a Sabaki (pairing/petty knife), the person in front was very knowledgeable and helpful, dropped em off at 10am picked them up around 3pm same day. They do have their own sets of knives you can choose from as well as accessories to go with all these knives, casings, holders, shields pretty much everything you need whether your a professional chef or home chef. Their knowledge though was through the roof, they offer you the best advice and options in regards to all cutlery. All knives I got back I tested with the paper test and all passed with flying colors, they did state before use to wash them due to the compound they use to sharpen them, wash in warm water and hand dry if you can for longevity of knives. Summary: Avoid if you actually care about your knives and basic customer service. This review is for the service I received at the Campbell farmer's market from Perfect Edge; I cannot speak to the in-store experience. Perhaps most of the positive reviews on their page are for in-store services, hence different from my experience. I used Perfect Edge's service twice at the same farmer's market, and both times the service was sloppy. Perhaps they think the average Joe at fairs does not care about their knives or the service, but if that were the case, we would buy kitchen-grade knife sharpeners and not take the time to bring our knives to Perfect Edge. The first time, they plain forgot about me. They told me to come back in 20 minutes. I came back in 20 minutes and asked about my knife. The lady told me it should be ready in a few minutes if I had given it to them 20 minutes ago. So I waited right in front of their truck. After 15 minutes, I asked again, and she checked with the guy. They had forgotten about me. I waited some more time and finally got my knife with a "sorry about that." No gesture on the price or for the time I wasted there. Sure. Today, giving them another go, things like that can happen, whatever. I handed over 4 knives. Upon getting back home, I washed them and noticed 3 of them were just butchered. In order of increasing concern: 1. Inconsistent blade grind thickness/height (visible in picture 1, a little bit hidden behind the red box). Note that there are other reviews on the page complaining about this. 2. Scratches on the blade choil (visible in picture 1). The knife clearly touched the grinding wheel there, but they shrugged it off. 3. Blade profile changed on the paring knife (visible in picture 1). My blade is now straight-ish instead of having the original curve. Note that there are other reviews on the page complaining about this. 4. They ground the blade guard for no reason on the two other knives (visible in picture 2). Perhaps it was just easier to act like it wasn't there to grind the blade. I now have a sharp blade guard--great. The profile of the new blade guard is not even symmetric (visible in picture 3). One side has a long edge; the other is short. Anyway, as the foreword suggests, at the farmer's market, at least, I don't think clients are taken seriously. The job is sloppy; the price isn't. I do not recommend their mobile service. Note that I've tried to resolve the issue with the owner over text. This review comes after 9 days of being left on read while the owner stalled the discussion, repeatedly asking, "How are the knives working?" instead of acknowledging any of my remarks. Some remarks were answered with excuses related to the way their tools work, for example, the scratches in picture 1. Note that this is the second time the knife went through them, and it was not an issue the first time. The business tends to avoid accountability for errors and does not take necessary steps to rectify them. Hope this helps. read more

Used their affiliate drop off service which was super convenient as the turnaround time was only 1 day. Knives came back sharp BUT the sharpening completely changed the edge profile on each blade. I prefer to keep the blade angles as close to original as possible. It seems the knives were dragged through a sharpening machine used for gardening equipment. Update. Literally minutes from the Hayward Park Caltrain Station! I wasn't able to take a close look around as I was taking a detour from work but I was able to get a quick knife guard for my Deba knife as well as a pair of kitchen shears. Just seeing the walls and shelves of knives makes me happy and had to put the restraints on to not spend too much time. Next time for sure! Tara is incredibly knowledgeably and non judgmental. I came to keep my dad company to pick up a new knife. I was listening in to their conversation, and ended up with three knives that will immediately replace my Walmart thirteen year old knives that I have glued together. There are refurbished knives and new knives. When allowing you to test knives, there's no pressure to get new or refurbished. All knives are treated with care and it is really about which knife you are the most comfortable with. I was encouraged to try many different knives, and I learned about different histories and purposes for knives. Everything was tailored towards what is the most comfortable and practical for me. Luckily, my son, who rooms with a couple of chefs, took me to Perfect Edge a few weeks ago to get my chef's knife reshaped and sharpened and to show me the possibilities. As soon as I walked into the shop, I knew I was a dead man. Though the shop is pretty small, they have a huge selection of knives from all over the world, though they predominantly focus on Japanese cutlery. They also carry the major German brands as well as some great American labels such as Messermeister and Lamson. Add to that their knowledgeable and super-friendly staff... well, 6 knives and 2 repairs later. I'm hooked! Speaking of knife sharpening and repair, I brought in two knives that needed some reshaping and repair. For the first knife, the tip was misshapen and after 30 years of hand-sharpening, the overall edge profile was way off. When I got the knife back, it was like a brand new knife. They reduced the edge angle ever-so-slightly and the knife is now razor sharp! The other knife I brought in was a custom-made knife that needed some serious work as the blade was convex on both sides and completely lacked an edge bevel. They added an edge bevel and redid the edge to 15 degrees and now the knife SO much better, able to slice through meat and easily pierce joints! Couldn't be happier! I can't rave enough about Perfect Edge Cutlery! If you're into cooking and live in the area, you owe it yourself to visit the shop. Alright prices but definitely wouldn't ever bring my knifes here especially Japanese that are very expensive They will kill its life span. Thank you, Sean and Tara for the incredible experience! My friend wanted my opinion on something here and he brought me here on Saturday afternoon. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I came to the store. First of all, if you like shiny sharp things like I do in particular chef knives etc, having a tent with a full range of displays and a major discount on knives just because the knife didn't have a box is taunting a child who can't resist candy. It first started with me browsing outside just playing around holding the knives and reading the different descriptions etc... Then I meet Tara, this passionate and very so kind owner of the shop. she started talking to me and explaining the difference between the knives I was holding etc and said "if I liked to try them out, I have a cutting board inside." I turned to my friend, wides wide grinning ear to ear, and said "Hell yea" Little did I know I was about to be transported to my version of willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; except this eye-candy can hurt you fairly quickly and pretty badly. And inside, I met Sean. If you ever get to meet Sean, he's such a great guy. He was so knowledgeable and well versed in all types of knives. pocket knives, cooking knives, western versus eastern knives, and why there is a 10lb meat cleaver made of pure iron...(I'm not kidding. Heck, they have an even bigger one above it). He's very open-minded and can talk you through situations on why he recommends this knife versus that knife etc. I walked in there without any expectations and walked out there full of knowledge, a few knives, and a lifetime of memories and loyalty to the store. I am a real stickler when it comes to knives; I just know what I like. Despite knowing that, Sean was so gentle with me in showing me knives and explaining the variations of why this maker did this and or why this was one was phased out, pulling out knives for me to try and holding them, etc. He had no expectations of having me buy a knife, nor did I feel pressured into buying one. But it doesn't help with you having such a personable person like Sean helping you out. I must have spent at least an hour there talking to Sean geeking out to learning about knives! Long story short, my friend and I both walked out of there with knives we didn't think we ever needed in our lives. Technically, we still don't but it just makes so much sense to buy the knives we did because it provides efficiency to our cooking and a few ergonomics too. And as we were browsing, there were plenty of loyal customers dropping off knives to get sharpened or picking up their sharpened knives. That was really comforting to see. If you are ever looking for a knife or want to learn more about knives, this is the place you want to be. Sure you can go to Bed Bath and beyond, William Sonoma or Sur La Table, but those knives are so limited and generic. To be honest, I only found out about this place because my buddy in Hawaii sent me a post on IG from a popular chef about a little shop in San Mateo selling amazing knives for deep discounts. I just recently moved to Burlingame last year and I thought I knew about most of the businesses in the neighborhood but I was pleased to find a new spot. When I got there on Wednesday it was crazy busy, fortunately they had a great selection of knives left with a generous discount for open box and refurbished knives. They even had several knives in-store (which is super small) on sale with a ton of selection. Although it took maybe ~45 minutes to purchase my knives, it's great to see a small business with a long line, especially during this pandemic.
