Performance Automotive is fantastic. I had a great experience with Walt and Melissa. Highly recommended! I was buying a used car remotely and called Performance Automotive to do the pre-purchase inspection. His price was reasonable, and he sounded very knowledgeable. The dealer dropped off the car the next day, and Walt called me less than an hour later. He told me not to buy the car under any circumstances, and gave me a list of problems with it to justify the decision. He was also very polite and understanding when the dealer did not pick up the car quickly enough and needed to be reminded. Walt is extremely professional, and a nice guy, too. He said that since he figured out the answer for me after a very short test drive and barely looking at it, without going through the full inspection, he didn't even charge me. Wow! I insisted on paying, at least something, and he did not want to take payment. He was happy to help, and he even offered I can call him for advice during my used car search, even if the car I find is nowhere near his shop. Wow again! This is the place to have your car maintained and repaired. This is it. I had some major updates/repairs to complete and they did it all at a fair price. We had to flush out a brake problem i was having because someone installed the wrong master cylinder and we were not sure about the hydraulic lines. Fixed all that and the brakes finally work right. Other shop just kept fixing the front rotors. Working on a vehicle that is 24 years old (98 suburban) takes patience and knowing where to get parts. Walt changed the oil to 15/40w Delo for the older engine needs (zinc, as i remember). Anyway, i just do my 3000 oil change and a couple of brake adjustments (brake drum on back axle) and we are good. i came into the shop because i had a steering wheel column that had a bad sensor. Other dealer was recommending addressing the wheel bearings and that did not sound right to me. I would have been paying this dealer (probably $150-175/hr to figure out steering problem). Steering column/sensor problem was a little scary because as i made a 60-70 mph turn from one freeway to another freeway (this is where the issue showed up), the steering would float for a quarter of a second. It had to be fixed and Walt got it. And Cherie writes up the notes of the work (orders parts too) and after looking at her paperwork, you know exactly what was done. This is the second review I have written on this business, the first one I gave was taken down for some strange reason. I am asking Yelp to NOT take this one down. This is NOT a fake review and I am a real live person who did business with this company. I took my car into Walt in March 2020. (Chrysler 300C) The car had been in dire straits since December, needing a new computer. I had the car at the dealer from Jan to March with the dealer "attempting to fix the problem" with no luck. I got one story after another, was treated poorly at the dealer, 0 customer service and finally upon the recommendation of a friend, had my car towed into Walt's repair shop. I had been told by the dealer the car was NOT repairable, as the after- market computers they had ordered were not working. I was beyond upset and frustrated, not only by the poor service I received, but the fact I was out a car. For months!! From the day the car went into Walt's shop, Walt was very interactive with me, explained the situation as he saw it and made his recommendations for repair to the car. I honestly did not think it could be fixed, judging from what everyone else had been telling me. Walt went over the car, called me to let me know what he had found, ordered the parts and proceeded to repair a car that everyone was telling me could NOT be fixed! He was fast, thorough, and just completely made my day when he called to say it was fixed! I was overjoyed. Try going without a car for 3 months and then tell me how great it was. Because it wasnt. And he had it fixed it no time. I highly recommend this shop for any car repairs you may need. Walt is honest, knowledgeable and now I won't take my car anywhere else but to him. Very disappointed in this round and won't be going back. Have had work done there before, and honestly, I was quite happy. This round, not so much at all..... On my truck, I had a tire issue, at which point, front end inspected, then when taken back to same(Not Performance) place, for new tires, it was inspected again, told brakes were at least 25% on front, rears were no problem, and nothing else major found to be of concern. Granted, this is a year ago, but only maybe 4,000 miles. Truck is 99 Ford 7.3 diesel, 2wd, 108,xxx miles. Bone stock, nearly everything is original. Truck taken in for: Suspected pulley going bad, makes noise when started in morning. Power steering gear box leak(very obvious). Oil leak dripping from pan. On to Performance's estimation on my truck..... Oil leak diagnosed as plug was screwed up somehow by last oil change. Ok, no problem. We'll do an oil change and put in a new plug, should solve issue. Don't remember exact price, but we ended up not doing it. Read entire review and you will understand why. Power steering box leak.... Resealed, cost almost $300. Was done while still on truck, guessing it must be a turd to do, since the reseal kit isn't more than $20 at any auto parts store. $35 for the kit, the total almost $290 with diagnosis time included. Pulley noise..... They diagnosed as water pump leak. Sorry, had this exact same motor in another truck and when it leaked, it was visible, this truck has no such visible sign. Price when done on other truck at another shop? $450 all told, new hoses to reroute around belt, thermostat housing, and other bits. Performances price? Nearly $900!!! Was told that due to Ford not making parts for these trucks/aging them out, prices have gone up. What a pantload....Amazon has the pump for under $220 and trust me, they're not hard to find, but over $600 in odds and ends, plus labor? SERIOUSLY? I could understand $600 total, but was quoted $850ish for just the waterpump. Then, all the other stuff they supposedly found.... Bad bearing on 1 front side, bad BRAKES, ball joints, and other stuff. Couldn't replicate the pulley noise. When I called in to ask about all of this, told them it's out of budget, put it back together, I want to pick up my truck, then was asked "Well, what about our time for diagnosis?" No problem, charge me the $105 or whatever, but they called me back, and we did the reseal job on the power steering gear for $300 and it negated their diagnosis fee. Fine, I still think I got hosed though. Oh, let's not forget the hood struts, because my hood won't stay up by itself, or might be in danger of falling. Wrong answer, it was up not even a week ago and had no issues at all. When confronted about brakes, I was told by Performance that the rotors had a huge lip in them and that it was almost metal to metal contact. It's also on their printed report. Because of the lip, rotors would probably not be able to be turned. Total brake job was going to be about $800. Had another shop do rotors, pads, and calipers on my other diesel with same motor for $450. Told them they're out of they're freakin' minds. So, from there, it went straight to another shop, the one who did my water pump on the same motor in another truck, nearly indentical otherwise.... Guess what they found? Basically, NOTHING. Brakes? Perfectly fine. Ball joints/bearing/all the other stuff? Perfectly fine, maybe some wear showing, but certainly nothing in need of desperate replacement as led to believe by Performance. Truck has 108,000 miles on it, it is diesel, has towed, but still on original brakes. My total bill with Performance was going to be at least $3,200 plus whatever else they decided to find wrong with it, but they claimed to be nice and filled up my coolant, which was supposedly low due to this leak that I have, which I don't. 2nd shop has done me no favors and would have no reason/knowledge to tell me otherwise. Their report shows 40% on front and rear brakes, absolutely no lip as reported on Performances written report. Very, very disappointed in Performance's attempt to squeeze me for over $3,000. I ended up doing oil change and fuel filter at second shop for $340 with an hour or so of inspection time included. Go to Sparky's J and L Automotive on Franklin St. for your repairs or McCoy Tires for tires and basic brakes. Sparky's handles both diesel and gas vehciles. Google them and find my review. Will be going there first from now on. Performance lost a customer today after having a second opinion. read more

BEWARE!!!!!! Went to this shop and had my daughter's air conditioner fixed in March 2014 for approximately 190.00. It stopped working again the end of July and I brought it back to Performance Automotive today. First off they fixed the problem without calling me for consent....than charged me $148.00 to fix my car again. When I called and asked why they would charge me again to fix my air conditioner after I had them fix it just a few months ago. They stated that it was a whole new problem. From a customers point of view, if I paid you in March to fix my car I expect it to last longer than a few months. This company does not stand behind their work. When I complained I got a "We don't give a crap attitude." If I could give them no stars I would! They lost my business, that's for sure. read more

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. If you're looking for a great place in Modesto to take your car for whatever reason, ANY other place is better than this one. Why you ask? They nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING. This the kind of place that will pack as much unnecessary "oh by the way we found this" to fix as they possibly can. They absolutely do not have your best interest in mind, they do not try to save you any money or give you any form of "value" for your money, AT ALL. This place will try and get as much out of you in a visit as they possibly can, and believe me, they GROSSLY over charge. I know it's a business and businesses function to make money, but this place is over the top. I mean things like changing a headlight bulb, which almost every auto shop / auto retail store does for free (you buy the bulb of course), Kragen, O'Reilys, Auto Zone, etc will have an employee walk out and change your bulb in 5-10 minutes. Performance Automotive (Walt) will charge you LABOR, ya his hourly rate of $100 worth (back to my nickel and dime point) on any task, no matter how small or effortless it is and then they just put it on your bill, nobody asks or confirms it. The owner Walt & his employees are very discourteous and unprofessional. They have that "Well get around to you when we're ready so shut up and sit down" attitude. Like no one else has anything important to do in their life. They give you no information or answers about their service, what they're doing, or most importantly how long it will take. We brought our car in when they OPENED because they said that's the best time, you'd think we'd be right up in front of the line right? They don't say "Oh ya it should only be about this long, it should be done by or before this time..." like you would expect from any decently run business, they literally make you wait... and wait... and WAIT, something small you can be stuck for 6+ hours it & throws off your entire day. Absolutely horrible and unacceptable service. They just take their time at this place and yours, literally. This is not a rant, I'm not "disgruntled", bitter, or angry. This place is just miserable and I'd like to help anyone who sees this first from unnecessary stress. If you read this, don't count this review out as an isolated incident, you will regret it. There are other auto shops in the area much more worth your time and hard earned money. read more
