Took in our 2015 BMW 535i for a headlight error and an AC system repair since it wasn't blowing cold. Since the diagnosis of the headlight would involve removing the bumper and the headlight assemblies cost $5000 in new parts, I knew I would repair it myself so Rich talked me out of having them diagnose it. It would have involve removing the bumper and would have been expensive, just to tell us that it's broken. Saved me a lot of money. For the AC, they vacuumed the refrigerant and checked for major leaks. Since the system was low, they refilled it and added die so we could inspect for the leak location if/when it needs to be filled again. We can make a call regarding repairs at that time. Another great call by Rich that saved us a bunch of money. We'll be back if (when) we need the car repaired or serviced! read more

And then he refused to give the diagnostic results because I didn't pay even though he said he'll "waive" it this time since he didn't mention it ! Excellent all around experience at Performance Autowerk. My Audi A6 was in bad shape with fluid leaking and a severe engine rumble. Second review: I drove the distance from Berkeley because I just have not found an Audi shop I love locally, and I had a good experience here when I broke down in the area last year. So glad I did. Great experience again: Had an oil issue and Rich spent 20 minutes with me, looked at the car and under the hood. I thought that it would be difficult to match their serrvice, but the guys at Performance Autowerk do an amazing job at a reasonable price. I did not like this shop at all. Seeing all the 5 stars, thought it'd be solid. But my experience here left a sour taste in my mouth. They seemed very dismissive of me and did not even troubleshoot my issue. One of my issues was covered under a BMW extended warranty and when I said to the shop guy I'd take it to BMW first to look at instead of use their shop they got VERY SNAPPY with me and said BMW would never cover the warranty work. They charged me to troubleshoot my BMW engine problems and also gave me a quote for another repair. They said there was no problem with my engine that they could find yet it clearly was misfiring. And the other repair was covered under a BMW extended warranty that they DID NOT MENTION. I only knew about the extended warranty because A DIFFERENT SHOP told me. I took it to BMW and they covered the repair. Additionally BMW QUOTED LESS for the repair than this shop. (The receipt showed the total cost at $0 charge since it was under extended warranty) The other shop did a smoke test and leak down test and was able to find the engine issue too. Might be good for some brake jobs, oil change etc but I would not trust, I'm sorry. read more

This review hurts because I love this shop. Unfortunately this was not a good experience. It took 15 mins to diagnose the check engine light and they charged almost $200 for that "labor". And when they did the repair they charged labor for that too. I was surprised that they did not apply the diagnostic labor to the repair. Oh well, pricing is what it is... however, for the 2nd time I had to return because they didn't QA the job well. This time it was a disconnected air hose; on the previous repair they didn't torque the oil filter. I still have faith in this shop. I choose them because I like the personal experience of a small independent versus the dealership. That means more to me than pricing. What I cannot accept is poor quality assurance. I am willing to pay what they charge as long as I get the quality service that should come with that price. I believe in Performance AutoWerk and will continue to use them as my primary mechanics. So far, so good. I'm really pleased with my experience with this shop so far. I'm awaiting further diagnostics on an oil leak, but the service I have received thus far has been nothing but extremely friendly, thorough, honest, and helpful. I have a mystery oil leak in my VW and I brought it here because my usual shop can't handle the job. I wish I knew about this place sooner because I'd have just taken my car here the whole time instead of having a non-specialty shop working on my car. In any case, I was working with Brian and he made sure to explain in great detail what he thinks is going on with my car, and the steps we will need to take to diagnose. Not to mention he proactively is trying to find a way to prevent me from having to pay double labor costs for a job I'll probably need done which I greatly appreciate since repairs to these cars are not cheap given the amount of labor involved. I'm traveling out of town again this weekend and was concerned about safety of driving my car again down there, but he assured me the leak is so slow it should be fine, and he replaced my drive belt which was in dire need of replacement.
