This restaurant surprised us. The chain began long ago as a Pancake House, but has come a long way since then. They still are heavy on breakfast food and bakery products. But they now also have interesting choices for lunch and dinner. When we first looked at the menu, we were worried. Many of the dishes include bacon or other meat products. Since we are pescatarians, we cannot eat meat. But looking more carefully, we found a some appealing seafood and vegetarian options. We got the Fish and Chips, the Grilled Salmon dinner (with the Cajun preparation), and the Grilled Fish (white fish) and Shrimp dinner. All were good. The rice that comes with the Grilled Fish and Shrimp dinner does not include chicken stock, so not a problem for us. They also have a Jumbo Shrimp dinner, which we might try next time. I also got the Tomato Basil soup, which was excellent, and did not include chicken stock. We added Cholula sauce to the Tomato Basil Soup. Among the vegetarian options we will try in the future, is the Short Stack (pancakes), which does not include bacon. Among the many soft drinks offered is Cranberry Iced Tea and Cranberry Half and Half. There are many sides from which to choose with the dinners. The fresh fruit really is fresh, and the asparagus is also a good choice. My only disappointment was that they have removed their shrimp pasta from the menu. It had a very good reputation, and even our server told us it was excellent. I hope the owners will change their minds about that and bring back the shrimp pasta. read more

I normally really like this Perkins. Visit on 3/12 was a big disappointment. Our waitress was either not interested or overly busy. My $$$ fish dinner had the tiniest portions I've seen. Usually I have leftovers- but nothing left over last night. I took a slice of cheesecake pie home, and even it was smaller than normal and not as tasty as I expected. I was feeling like breakfast for dinner and Perkins was right around the corner so we decided to go. Haven't been to Perkins for years and will probably be a while before we go back. Savannah was our server and as she started out great, once we got our food she disappeared. My husband asked for extra mayo on his burger and it came with none. He chose to wait to ask for a side but nearly 10 minutes later our server was no where to be seen. I was a sever for years and always checked in after the 2 bites rule. I finished my meal by the time she came back. We had to flag down a manager who got the mayo and refilled both our empty drinks. I got a chocolate shake and it was very runny. It was more like drinking chocolate milk. Husband said his burger was good but my build your own breakfast was meh. I've been to Perkins a few times and it's always been great no matter what time it is. We were seated after 10 minutes and the house was definitely packed. Next to the window on 23rd street on a busy March Madness Saturday is definitely a place to have a great brunch. I had a taste for breakfast and lunch, so my friend and I split Brioche French toast platter including: scrambled eggs with cheese, and sausage links. Then I got the tangler burger with French fried onions, lettuce, pickles, onions, and bbq sauce. (No tomatoes for me) There's a special right now for your choice of a signature burger, that comes with fries and a slice of pie for $9.99. The brioche French toast was a little dry, but the eggs were great, I didn't eat the sausage. The burger was amazing, the fried onions made it even better. The French fries are always crispy and hot. Also the drink menu is filled with plenty of options to choose from, and I went with the raspberry ginger ale. It's difficult to review a place like Perkins. You pretty much know what to expect when you go. This is franchise food and consistency is key. Also, there are never any surprises or unique local creations. That doesn't make it good or bad, just. . . consistent. The food is good and satisfying. The portions are ample and fresh. I've never had a bad meal at Perkins. I've also never had an inspired meal at Perkins, either. There are lots of standard selections- breakfast, burgers, salads, chicken. No complaints about the food. The service is also consistent. The servers are friendly and eager to make you happy. They are not pushy or cloying. They know how to make pleasant conversation but not linger. The dining area is very attractive and comfortable. The booths provide an opportunity for people to have an intimate conversation. I always appreciate being able to converse if I am at a restaurant. The noise level here is just right. Not to loud and that's a big plus. This is my first time at Perkins as we don't have it in Michigan. Apparently, it's a chain and it's open 24 hours. I would say being open 24 hours is a big perk especially when the food is good at a reasonable price. The decor looks like a regular casual diner and the menu has a good variety. The service was friendly and decently attentive. The food tasted like home cooking. I ordered the southern fried chicken breakfast which had fried chicken sandwiched between biscuits topped with country gravy... yum!! It came with a side of eggs, bacon and hash browns. The appetizers I ordered were large and perfect for the after drinking bites. The service I got was great. Fried shrimp bites were enjoyable. I also got chicken strips, and mozarella strips. I forget which order but it came with a muffin which to me is gigantic but very flavorful, I had a cranberry raisin with a crusted top. Me and my mom stopped in for lunch. I ordered the Monterey shrimp pasta and my mother ordered the meatloaf. Hoodoggie!!!! The food was awesome. Oh, Perkins. You and your middle-of-the-night diner food. If you are or were a KU student, statistically speaking you have ended up here really really late at night (or early in the morning, depending on how you define it) and have tried desperately to read and comprehend the menu enough to order bacon an eggs from a sweet lady with Christlike patience. She probably even poured your coffee for you so you wouldn't spill it, and even likely translated your "doss itss come wisausage?" order because she just knew you needed a little extra grease to mellow out that wicked cheap beer headache you are nursing. I don't even remember what's on the menu here other than that it's the same stuff you find at all the other likeminded diners in any town, ever. I DO, however, remember the gorgeous cooler full of 5 inch tall pies right inside the door and I'm not too proud to admit that I once bought an entire peanut butter pie and defensively ate it by myself until the point of vomiting. Inside, customer seating area looks nice with lot of seating. Restroom is hard to find for first time visitors, situated to far right side of cash register in the corner. Waitress is pleasant, took food order immediately. I ordered magnificient 7. Food was ready in less than 7 minutes. Noticed eggs came with sunny side up. I pointed to the lady, i asked for sunny side down. Took it back, rectified it, brought back as per original order. The bill amounted to $8:73. The 3 pancakes were good with apricot syrup and then maple syrup. Eggs are good. Bacon strips are good too. I took my Grandparents here for a nice Friday morning breakfast. We all ordered coffee and orange juice as we waited for our food. I've been here a few times and from experience I know that the service can be a little slow. But after waiting for 40 minutes for our food, no refills on coffee, and the waitress gone, it was time to go. I put a three start but the pies are definitely on the 4 star side. The waiters were very friendly and helpful as we had lots of accomodations made to the order (within acceptable reason of course). It's breakfast menu the whole day but what a wondrous selection and variety. The shrimp was fresh and good. Please if you're too full up after the meal for dessert, get a take away. Had a great breakfast here at about 1 am on a Sunday night. Not only were they one of the only places open on a Sunday night, which is a bonus, but the food was pretty much perfect as far as restaurant breakfasts go, and the service was top notch.
