The first time I took my dog here, the groomer was 1 hour and 30 minutes late even after I notified the person I made the appointment with that my husband and I had things to do after the appointment. Our furry friend got a bath, nails done, teeth brushed, and anal gland expression done. It was all fine, save for the extremely late groomers. Freddy, who I believe is the owner, knocked off the price of the teeth brushing... I'm guessing it was done, because they were ridiculously late for our appointment. We figured, ok, well enough and let it slide that time since some people just don't have good days. Maybe they had a really good reason for being late. Fast forward to, today, and we decided last minute that we should try to get him an appointment. I called knowing it might be difficult and that we may not be able to get one. Freddy answered the phone. I asked about an appointment, today, and he said he was busy, but he could squeeze us in at 3pm, which I was grateful for. I needed to check if that worked for my husband, because he would be the one taking him. The time wasn't going to work so we decided to bathe him ourselves for, today. I called Freddy back with the intention of rescheduling a bath, teeth cleaning, and nail trimming for the coming Saturday. Instead, while I was explaining that 3pm wouldn't work, today, and before I could even try to reschedule he quickly brushed me off saying, "Ok, yeah I'm very busy". Then, he hastily hung up the phone. He probably doesn't care, but we (our existing furry companion and our puppy on the way) won't be coming back. read more

I just went here for the first time as I was referred by a coworker and to say I am going each time for EVERYTHING including grooming would be accurate. My dog is a medium sized Aussie/Corgy mix from a rescue and was obviously abused. I let them know at the store and the groomer spent an hour with him giving him treats and playing with him before giving him his cut. Talk about the EXTRA mile. He also discussed what food I was feeding him, his diet, and even helped my girlfriend with her cats (who we didnt even bring). He gave us a discount for being our first time and were more than the perfect place to go. To top everything off, they do not kennel your dogs while they wait or once they are done. They have a play pen in the actual store for your dog to relax and an employee with him/her the whole time so that they do not feel lonely. I will be back multiple times as they have made me a loyal customer on the first time there. By the way, a 15lb bag of food, shampoo, anal gland, groom, nails cut. All for under $75... Closest person when looking at Yelp was $120 for just shampoo and cut. Enough said! read more

Their store is Clean, the area where our babies get their fur cut is well equipped with well-groomed uniformed personnel. BEWARE!!! It pains me to write a negative review but after consulting with several friends, I decided that fellow yelpers must know what happened so they are better informed. As you can see, I have written a rave review on this establishment in the past so you know my review is true and with no fabrication. After several attempts to get an appointment for my two dogs the past 6 months, I finally get a last minute appt this passed Tuesday. Nice right? Until what happens next. The price was $45 per dog (12lbs and 15lbs) in the past and the new pricing has increased to $60.00. Granted, Fred said the $45 was a discount in the past but to increase it by 30% is pretty ridiculous. He explained that my dog was fairly matted so the justification of the higher price. Okay, fine, I'll accept that but my other dog was barely matted. Okay, I said fine too. Then I realized that I actually have a free wash because the entire frequent car is completed with stamps. (Please note that his new card is for $20 off, so not the same one. Looks the same). When I advised him of such, he said that I am only qualified for ONE free wash if I have TWO completed stamped cards. Well, that's strange because on my one card, he had hand written (and advised verbally) in Chinese that each completed stamped card is entitled to One free wash (he did that because he didn't want me to think I would get two free washes since I have two dogs). SO why then did he take both my cards? When I asked for clarification, he shooed me away. What he said did not make sense so again I asked for further clarification. He says to me repeatedly, " Dont worry about it it. Just go!" in Cantonese with hand gestures to leave. What? Just go? But he didn't give me an explanation. I then asked if I can get my cards back so I can point it out out to him but he denied me of that, instead he grabbed another card and pointed on the card and said you need TWO cards. Actually, it doesn't say that anywhere on the card he showed me either because I tried looking at it and he put it away. Okay, let's just assume this was all a misunderstanding in the free wash but is it necessary to ignore my question and kick me out of the shop when I clearly wanted an answer. Then in the midst of me trying to understand all this, he says I'm annoying? Fred, you know that I had nothing but good things to say about your shop in the past but here is a quick line up of what was so wrong with this experience as well as my past experience that I bit my tongue on. 1) the way you shoo'ed me away repeatedly and rudely 2) the fact you didnt want to explain to me why I am not getting one free wash per card (second card was missing one stamp but he took it anyway). I had two dogs so my second paid grooming would have given me one free wash that day and a second free wash on my next visit. 3)HIGHLY suspectible for him to take my card and would not let me point to what you have written on the card 4) Your groomer said my two dogs will be done by 530pm and will call me if she is done early. If not, just swing by at 530pm because they will be done. I get there at 530pm. My second dog only got bathe and still need to be cut. She informed me that it will take some time for the cut. Come back? WTF??!!!!!! If you were going to be late, couldn't you have called me? I dont live next door! I need to travel to your damn shop. Ugh 5) Your previous groomer (caucasian girl with tats) cut one of my dogs' legs. This was about maybe 9 months ago? Didn't you employ her? Clearly, she was not doing well that's why you fired her. You never apologized about this; you basically pushed the responsibility on her. No compensation even though my dog was hurt. Did I request that? No...and neither did you try to make up for the fact that he got cut. You just ignored it. 6) Your shop used to offer cage free (roam around in the back yard) but when I inquired about it this time, you informed me that there is a huge dog in the back (his doberman) so my dogs need to go into the cage. Your promo cards still says it's available. You might want to update if you are not offering it anymore!!! 7) It took you months (approximately 5+ months) to process my dog's license. Why does it take so long? I had to follow up twice last year before it got processed. 6) I tried making an appt several times. One of the convos went like this: "Hi, do you have an appt for my two dogs?" Fred said, "no, we are busy this weekend" "Okay, how about the weekend after?" " No, we are busy next weekend too." "How about the weekend after. "No, we are very busy. Call back next time." Hung up. Really??! If I was annoying, Fred. (He said I was annoying when I voiced my opinion to him about his attitude on Tuesday), then I would have complained about all of the above in the past but I decided I did not want to make a big stink about it because you are a local mom/pop shop I decided not to yelp it. I have been buying my dog food and supplies at Pet Choice for two years now and it is ALWAYS a wonderful experience. Choi is so friendly, always remembers mine and my Partner's names and what I get for my dogs. When I was first deciding what food I needed to switch to because my Chihuahua has IBS he took the time to go over food options with me and tell me pros and cons and the top sellers. He carries top quality dog food at the lowest cost I have been able to find in Oakland as well as all natural bones for my large Doberman/Shar Pei mix. To respond to some of the reviews below: 1) I use a credit card every time I go in and the owner has never given me a problem with it. Was writing a racist remark about the owner really necessary? 2) Occasionally, there is a doberman behind the counter who barks. He has a leash on and usually you are not able to see him, only hear him. When I had my own dog with me the owner put his dog in the back so mine could have free reign of the store. 3) The three girls who work the store front have always been nice and friendly with me, sharing tips and stories about their own dogs. Choi is wonderful and the store is the best quality for the lowest cost. Do yourself a favor: go in and have the experience for yourself, you won't regret it. read more

I had such a great experience here! I adopted a border collie yesterday who had such a big need for grooming, and I was absolutely desperate to get her in today. Even though they were booked, they listened to my pleas and found a way to see her (I think it was the panic in my voice ;). Henry (I think I got that right?) was great, suggesting a good food for her diet, and other really helpful hints. And the grooming was fantastic. We're so thrilled to have a pet supply store right in our own neighborhood. We had been patronizing an independent store down in the Fruitvale, but frankly, the prices just got so high that we started going to Pet Food Express. When Pet Choice opened, I went in immediately to see if they could carry the cat food we buy for our 2 boys. The owner was so incredibly accommodating, ordered the food (and pill pockets) for us right away - and even matched the price at Pet Food Express. He will now just keep a running order for us so that we'll always have what we need. Yay! And the hours are great, too. read more

Love this place! Excellent customer service. Fred usually helps us at the register. He is super friendly and loves telling us all about his doberman, Bui Bui who likes to greet us with a few menacing barks from behind the counter. Fred remembered our names after just visiting one time. Despite the fact that the store has convenient hours open till 7 we are usually running late and he's even stayed open past 7 just to ring us up rather than saying, "sorry, were closed." He even encouraged us to take our time and browse although he was clearly getting ready to close up shop. Bonus points because they carry Origen dog and cat (best pet food out there in my opinion) which is hard to find at most other pet stores. read more

I called in and was able to get a same day appointment. I took my cocker spaniel/golden retriever Mischa in for a grooming. Marie the pet groomer was great with her. Mischa needed to have her hair cut short and her paw pedi. I'm too scared to cut her nails myself since I don't have much experience with pets. The last place was not able to cut it since Mischa moved too much so they just filed it down. Mischa gets anxious when you try to touch around her paws, we figured that someone in her past might have hurt her trying to cut them. Marie was able to cut her nails down bless her soul!!! I told Marie that I eventually wanted to try and cut her hair myself so she gave me some pointers. We will definitely be back for pet products and Mischa's regular paw pedi. In summary I loved the place, it was a no-fuss experience. The service was great, and price affordable. read more

Pet Choice on MacArthur is my go to shop for all my kitty needs. The owner is incredibly nice, so nice that I always leave the store in a better mood than when I entered. He has random give-aways (of good stuff!) and is an excellent source of advice and referrals. One of my cats has special dietary needs, the brand of cat food isn't commonly found at smaller pet stores. I heard through a neighborhood group that the owner will special order pet supplies if requested and that he matches or beats most big-box prices. Turns out, they were right! If I call in my order by mid-day Wednesday I can usually pick up Thursday afternoon. Prices are as good, if not better, than the big retail chains. I have not used grooming services but have been on site and seen the handling and treatment of animals and feel good fully endorsing this store and it's owner. The decor is a little funky but the service is first class. :) read more

Originally I was a little skeptical of this place, all the awkward reviews were a turn off. But I decided to try it out anyway, and as I continue to visi this place I like it more and more. I mainly buy my dogs extremely overpriced dog food from here(Not the store owners fault the food is just expensive in general), but I have also bought dog beds, treats and toys from this place and I was able to catch them when they were on sale so that was a definite win. I really like this place because its so calm, close to my house, easy to get in and get out, the owner says "Hi" all the time, they ask me if I need help and then let me do my thing in peace (basically walk every row of the store and look at everything in silence, even though I already know what is on the shelves). I have even gotten to the point that I'm interested in utilizing some of the dog services they offer, my dog needs his nails clipped. I'm a little nervous but I recently took him to the vet where they really damaged some of his nails and I paid 30 something bucks, so I figure it cant hurt to try some where new. So if you live in the Diamond/Laural, or any place nearby come check this place out. Its small and maybe not the fanciest pet shop but its nice, the people are nice and thats what really matters right? read more

Pet Choice is a great option for all your animal needs. They have a great selection of products and are happy to take requests for food and special order for us all the time. Plus my small dogs love visiting once a week to spend the day in day care. They always have a great time. I have not done grooming there yet but have had the dogs bathed and they use an organic shampoo good for little guys with allergy issues. I definitely recommend visiting this shop. They are very committed to keeping the prices as affordable as possible and believe people shouldn't have to pay a fortune for quality care for their animals. read more

I love this store. It's so cute. I assume the guy who's always there when I go is the owner, and he's so nice. He says "thank you" about a million times. He helped me pick out dog shampoo. His Doberman is a little scary, but all I've ever seen him do is bark, and when I'm in there without a pet, he's been wandering around and let me pet him. I like that most of the products in here are natural and I feel good about supporting a small neighborhood business. I plan on going there tomorrow to buy some flea shampoo for my cat :) read more

I really like this place. it has everything you need. They have a groomer that my dog doesnt particularly enjoy but thats because he hates his nails trimmed. the groomer is very careful and talks to my dog while trimming the nails to try to calm the dog. the employees are always friendly when you enter. they have lots of knowledge in all varieties of food for dog and cats. lots of treats and toys to choose from. they enjoy seeing all dog breeds and sizes. they are not at all intimidated by the fact that i have a pitbull and greet him as well. they can order special brands if they dont carry it in the store. they have all kinds of food from vegetarian to raw based to your every day over the counter food. i love that they are in an area that embraces differences of all kinds. thanks to them for all their help! read more

This is the best store ever! Product Selection, prices, and customer service far exceeds my expectations and is far better than what I get from my local pet store in Montclair. When we brought our Akita puppy home in May, we had trouble finding her Victor 's brand dog food and appropriately sized leashes and things especially as she grew. Then we found Pet Choice and Fred the owner (who gets customer service). He has everything we need and orders it with a 2-3 delivery at most if it's not in stock I highly recommend this store and strongly urge you to drive out of Montclair for better selection, better prices, and THE best customer service Fred , thanks for taking care of me yet again Anita read more

This is, by far, the best little pet store in town. I found Freddy to be knowledgeable with the quality of pet food, and awesome grooming services. He is a true fur-babies owner, a compassionate owner. He is Always so welcoming at any time I stopped by, willing to go above and beyond to help with any questions I may have regarding pet care or food. This place IS SOOOOOO UNPROFESSIONAL. I called a couple days ago and asked if they can cut my cats nails and they said "yes, when would you like to come in" and I was thinking of the days and they interrupted me and said themselves "WHAT ABOUT THURSDAY. Is 1pm fine" I said "YES." Today is Thursday I walk in and tell them "I'm here for my appointment for my cat to get his nails cut" and they looked at me and said "OH WE DONT DO THAT TODAY THE LADY IS HERE ON SATURDAY" I asked them why would you tell me to come in today and the lady is not here... they didn't say sorry or anything all they said was "who did you talk to" and they just stood there looking stupid. I like to support local businesses and independent small business owners and you can't go wrong at Pet Choice! I took my Pitbull Petunia in for a grooming and nail trim on a busy weekend day. They did such a great job and my dog looked great and smelled terrific. The owner is such a lovely man and remembered me from a solitary panic visit months before to get a dog crate the first day we rescued Petunia starving, neglected and perilously ill. Freddy even gave me some good advice on raw food diets and picky eaters. They sell food, toys, bedding, etc for cats, dogs and other small pets. I will be back. read more

I love this place! Just took my pup Lola here for the first time. We've been searching for a new groomer since we've had a lot of hits and misses in Oakland. I've been to a lot of overpriced places who don't care for dogs and are too rough. I made an appointment for Sunday at 2pm but they were overbooked so I came back the next morning, no problem I know things happen. I came the next morning and the owner is really the sweetest. He taught me how to hand over my pup without her getting scared (she's really attached to me) and I could tell he really cared about her being comfortable which really made me feel at ease. I talked to the groomer and she had me explain what I wanted done and could tell she really loved what she does which made me happy. They were done much quicker than most groomers and had a flat rate of 65 for my small shih tzu which is a really good price. When my husband came to pick her up she had a glowing review from the owner and the groomer saying how calm and sweet she was, im delighted! Long story short I found my new groomer and hope everyone comes here. You'll feel like family and won't regret it! read more
