I have been using Pet Pals for more than ten years now. They are responsible, caring, reliable and have provided excellent care to my cat. We booked with "Pet Pals" five weeks in advance to have them feed an outdoor community cat for three nights while we were going to be out of town. The job is very basic as we only require fresh food and water to be left outside once per day for the cat. We would provide all food, water, disposable bowls, etc. and would leave all in a plastic bin outside. We told "Pet Pals" the cat is skittish, so there would be no need to try and pet it. The job would be 10 minutes at most. As a footnote, this outdoor community cat showed up at our door about a year ago, meowing loudly as it was starving. The Humane Society releases cats in San Diego neighborhoods as part of their "Community Cat Program." We felt sorry for the cat, so we gave it some food and water. Since then, it has continued to stop by each night for food and water, so we feed it as compassionate people. It is not our cat, but we cannot in good conscience go out of town and not arrange to have someone stop by to leave food and water out. Pet Pals owner Sonya responded to our "Nextdoor" post and we reached out to her and booked the dates five weeks in advance. Sonya was very nice on the phone and we were relieved as we thought we had found a responsible company to help out this trip and any future trips we might take. Two weeks before our scheduled trip, we sent a text message to Sonya to confirm the dates. We didn't hear back, so we left a phone message. Sonya finally texted back she couldn't do the job as we weren't in her neighborhood. She suggested we try hiring a neighborhood child or "Rover." Wow. When was she planning on telling us "Pet Pals" was not going to do the job? Now, we are scrambling trying to find someone to help out before we leave on our trip. Unprofessional and disrespectful are two words that come to mind with this situation. If "Pet Pals" did not want to do the job, they should have let us know right away so we could have found someone else. Very disappointing. read more

In 2020, I booked a job with Dennis to sit for my cat. I left a message saying she needed a pill with her visit and he dropped my job via voicemail and told me I needed to find a vet tech - *the afternoon before my flight was to leave.* My cat took a crushed pill mixed into a spoon of ice cream so easily... she gobbled it up. He wouldn't have even had to touch my cat. But he didn't bother to call me ask any questions, just dropped the job. I had to scramble so hard to find someone to take care of my cat. My hairdresser bless her soul filled in, gave my cat her pills, with no problems. 3 years later and I am still so upset about this situation. Would not recommend this business if you have anything the least bit difficult with your pet, because they will drop you at the last second without any referrals for additional help. I have never written a negative yelp review, but this situation was so awful, and I can't forget it. read more

We do a lot of short trips and Pet Pals has been so helpful in making sure our cats are fed and that there are no problems at the house while we are traveling. Both Sonya & Dennis are very professional and great at communicating via text. My cats are scared and nervous by nature, and rarely come out for strangers. When Sonya first started coming to our new house she had to feed them from their hiding spot behind the couch. Sonya is a genuine, caring and calm woman. I'm used to boarding our two dogs, one golden (50lbs) who is crazy, and our lab (110lbs) who is even crazier! After having a bad experience with our past boarding company (if you want to call it that) my husband and I looked for other options. I always worried about letting a stranger into the home, and like most mothers (pets children, whomever) I worried that the dogs would not be taken care of the way it was described. Boy was I wrong with Pet Pals! When I first met Sonya, I knew I could trust her, and I did. She not only watched after the dogs at the house, but took them on walks, and they warmed up to her very fast! I should also add, that she is a hero for watching two dogs that bark and jump! Sonya sent updates on the pups, took pictures of them looking happier than they usually are with me (still a little sad about that..haha) and when we arrived home, they were warm, snuggly, and most importantly, happy and warn out because of their recent walk. ALSO... price is always a big factor when it comes to pets, and especially finding an outfit that doesn't charge over $100 to board dogs. Especially here in San Diego. Sonya's price was reasonable, and not overpriced at all! She also offered to bring the trash to the curb and back in, check our mail, and we came home to a house with no hair... and with my two breeds, It was very evident that she had swept, which is not part of her job description, that's just who she is professionally, and at heart. We started using Pet Pals last year and stopped using during the pandemic. But I should have noticed the red flag in 2019 while using them when I came home from a week long vacation at 11 pm only to find both food dishes for our pets filled to the brim with three times as much food as they would eat in a day. This told me that that the best case scenario was that Dennis overfed them. Worst case was that he was only stopping by once every few days. I honestly don't know. This year we decided to give them another try recently as I considered their years in experience and good reviews here, and to call it a fluke. My recent experience this week has compelled me to write this review...I have never given anyone one star review before but I feel as if this is necessary. In full disclosure I hired them a few weeks ago and had to cancel do to an illness and missed flight - so maybe Dennis was disgruntled with me before this recent event (even though I offered to pay in full regardless of the cancell). However, I should have noticed the red flag when Dennis refused to come over a few weeks prior so I could go over the new feeder and litter box, saying..."I'm too busy...just leave me directions." We were in a tight spot so I went against my best judgement. Yesterday, however, the lack of empathy and rudeness displayed by Dennis was something I will never forget. We had hired Dennis to watch the cats. This time I made the terrible mistake of not leaving a key...completely my fault and I was in great distress as I learned about this. Dennis called and said there is no key as we were picking up our rental car. I knew I had screwed up and apologized right away. I asked Dennis if he could go back later, even offering to pay as much as is needed. He said he was still in the area and went back to look under the mat. No key still. This is when he became incredibly rude. "I am not going back. I have a route like a UPS driver. This is your fault! Why didn't you check! This is your problem...not mine!" I then said so my cats will have to wait two days for food? He responded it's really only one day, which was wrong. I wasn't going to argue that the cats had already been waiting a since the day before as we fed them when we left - so they were very hungry at this point. There is no question that this was my fault but very least he could have done was to exhibit some kindness to someone in a great deal of duress. He seemed to only care about his "route" though...not about the well being of our animals. I asked again if there was anytime he could go back over once the locksmith provided a key (which happened in 45 minutes). He again angrily reapplied, "This is not my problem. Call a friend." I would NEVER trust Dennis with your pet. Get a camera if you do. read more

I have a rental unit in San Diego and my tenants used Pet Pals to take care of their cats while on vacation. While Dennis was there taking care of the animals, he left the kitchen faucet on while filling up a pitcher which subsequently blocked the drain causing a full blown New Orleans levy failure flood in my recently remodeled condo. The water was on for 24 hours before the problem was detected. The kitchen is on the second floor and the damage caused is astronomical. Both the first and second floor needed to be completely gutted (drywall, carpet, wood floor, cabinets...) and remodeled. I called up Dennis afterwards and there was absolutely NO apology, and all he could think to say was that something like this has never happened before to him before. My response was that accidents happen, and that's why businesses like yours have insurance, right? Nope. No insurance. After this initial call, both Dennis and Sonja have been screening my phone calls. I had hired Pet Pals a few yrs ago to watch my 3 cats for a wk. At that time, i would have said that they did a good job. My cats seemed happy and unstressed when i returned home. However, i hired them again in Sept of this yr and i was completely horrified by the care that my cats received. I was gone on a 10 day trip to visit my mom. While i was gone, i did not receive any communication from Dennis. Nothing good or bad. When i returned home, i opened the door to my house wreaking of urine. After turning on the light, I saw, literally a river of urine from the litter box, down the hallway (hardwood floors mind you!), and into the kitchen. Upon further inspection, i noted that much of the urine had crystallized and there were footprints in it! (and they weren't mine!) There was a bill left on the kitchen counter for the balance due with a note written on it that the litter mat was taken outside because the "cats peed on it". Does anyone see a problem here?... 1. No communication with me that the cats were urinating outside the litter box. 2. How can THAT much urine accumulate and go unnoticed. 3. Hardwood floors nearly ruined b/c the urine was clearly left on the floor and walked through, for who knows how long, without any effort to clean it up. 4. Unprofessional: irresponsible and disrespectful treatment of my pets and property. 5. Leaving a balance due bill with expectation of being paid after clearly neglecting the responsibilities of which he was hired for. When brought to his attention, he apologized and stated that he "had" visited daily and did everything that he was hired to do. No balance owed, and no mention of why he chose to leave the massive amt of urine on my floors. I really hate to leave poor feedback/reviews, as i don't want to be perceived as vindictive. But i felt it necessary to share my experience, so that others might consider all options when hiring someone to care for their beloved pets. read more

Dennis is a life-saver! My boyfriend works out of town a lot during summer, and I work 12 hour shifts. For $20.00 he comes and takes our Black lab "Maggie" on a 30 minute walk. I can now go to work, and not worry about her being alone so long. He also sends me a text message if anything is out of the ordinary with her. I have only lived in San Diego for two years and I travel back to Boston several times a year and often also go away on weekends. While living in Boston I always had close friends and family look in on KC (Kitty Cat) daily when I was traveling so I was uneasy to have to hire a service with her being 18 years old. I brought my dog to Pet Pals thinking that she would be safe and well cared for. What I found was that they gave the bare minimal effort of care. With as many dogs as they seem to handle, I wasn't sure we'd be getting the kind of individual attention I had asked about, but they assured me that we would. Unfortunately, my dog seems stressed out - probably from being either ignored or around too many aggressive dogs they cared for at the same time. When I called to ask about the routine and see how my dog was going, I wasn't that impressed with how they spoke to me. I was treated as if I was too interested in my dog and that I was annoying for calling during the middle of the day. If I wanted to be treated like dirt, I would have boarded her at a pet hotel. I got zero quality customer service, so I was unimpressed. I'm sure others who wrote good reviews probably felt like the bare minimum was fine, but my pet is more of a family member, not a possession I can showcase as being an "evolved person." My dog and I both deserved better treatment, rather than to be treated as if we were being pests. After 1 week, I began to wonder how they really treat animals. The husband - I think his name is Dennis or Denny, can't remember since he was so unimpressive - makes me think he really doesn't like animals, but that's just my perception. Yes, I realize this is their job and they probably chose this because they don't have very good people skills, but they don't seem to have good animal skills as far as I'm concerned. If a client calls to ask about their pet because we're so engaged, don't treat them like they are peasants. We hired YOU. You work for us and we deserve first class treatment. Lesson learned, you get what you pay for. I consider Pet Pals to be the Walmart experience of pet services, rather than the Macy's spectrum of pet care. read more
