Stocking up on supplies for the backyard critters. They've trained us well.
    Andrea M.

Alright I need to update my review and give Petco some love, despite the awkward miscommunication that took place that one time about the rats. To be fair, when I asked if they had rats, I should have been more clear I meant live ones, lol. Anyways. They have everything we need for our non-traditional 'pets' - squirrels, raccoons, possums, birds, and yes, rats.... We welcome all kinds at our home, don't judge. It's like Snow White's forest at our place. We buy large bags of sunflower seeds, corn, bird seed, and occasionally peanuts, although we usually get the peanuts at Safeway where they're cheaper. The critters are always happy with the goods. They've trained us well. Also, one time one of our squirrels got mange, and the poor guy was clawing his skin off. He also had a bum leg, probably from falling from a height while scratching. We were hesitant to take him to a vet, because in all likelihood they would have wanted to put him down. We got medicines at Petco, trapped Mr. Squirrel, treated him over about 10 days days, let him rest up, and then released him. He's doing fine now. Thank you for providing everything we need for our animal companions, Petco, and thank you for the friendly service as well.

This is an endangered species, Sun Conure

Behind the friendly staff and tidy store I discovered a heart-wrenching reality, numerous animals in small cages sold as if they are inanimate objects... This sun conure particularly broke my heart. This highly social parrot, an endangered species, was sitting alone, essentially in solitary confinement in a tiny cage millions of times smaller than what his natural range would be in the wild. This is a wild animal. Wildlife so not belong in captivity - especially endangered species! Breeding them in captivity does not make them "domesticated". Also I recently learned that the birds sold at Petco come from horribly cruel breeding mills where thousands of birds languish in cramped, filthy cages and many die before they arrive at Petco to be sold. Shame on petco for choosing to sell animals.

Snake trying to escape from enclosure that is already too small & is shared with another snake

I went to this PetCo last night and was angered to see that they are still selling live animals at this location!! All types of animals from sad hamsters in tiny little cages, to snakes in too-small enclosures who were literally climbing the walls trying to escape (see photo), to exotic frogs, to all kinds of fish. It's hard to believe that in this day and age, big corporations like this are still selling live animals! They must know these animals are sourced from horrible breeding operations with awful conditions, and it's so sad that they are then being confined in these tiny cages at PetCo, to be sold to anybody who has just a few dollars to buy them but not necessarily enough money or time to actually take good care of these pets. Nemo & Dory (see photos) should be free in the ocean, not suffering in small tanks at stores. So PetCo, please stop selling live animals!

    Critter food. Peanuts from Safeway.

I have rats. There I said it. I also have squirrels, raccoons, possums, crows, a big ass spider in my old style weighted windows, and other birds. But seriously this spider??? Kardashians take a seat ya'll got nothing on Miss Spidy. They all live outside except for the occasional squirrel who ventures inside (still working on trust issues with the rats) and Spidy. So here's the deal. Someone has to feed them and this is where Petco comes in. I get the big bag of sunflower seeds and the squirrel critter food which is mostly corn. I get peanuts at Safeway. Oh and in the winter when flies are scarce I get meal worms for Miss Spidy. Now that it is spring and into summer I just leave my doors open to give her flies to trap in her web. So I still order some critter vitamins online. Wish Petco carried some of these. They also have a great line of items for fleas and other health issues. Awhile ago one of the squirrels in the neighborhood came down with a really bad case of mange, and also a totally jacked up rear leg. I purchased multiple spray bottles of kill the mange and soothing solutions for this guy, and doctored him back to health for 2 weeks after I trapped him and brought him indoors. I also fed him Ivermectin 3 times. About the size of a rice grain. 2 weeks in captivity did him good. Petco had everything I need for topical treatment for this guy. We also cruise the birds, mice and snakes at the store. They get 4 stars because they are close and have everything my critters need when they need them.

The service is absolutely terrible. My dog is a Bichon, and whenever his fur gets even a little tangled, they immediately shave it all off instead of brushing it out. They completely shave his entire body every time -- because it's faster and easier for them, and they don't want to spend any extra time. This happens every single visit. I also have no idea what kind of attitude they show toward other dogs, but I always feel that my dog is terrified every time I take him there for a bath. He's so scared he doesn't even want to go inside, and when we come home, he sometimes vomits. Many of my friends have mentioned that their dogs are also afraid of Petco's grooming service, but I didn't take it seriously before. If you try to make a complaint, Petco's management never responds or follows up. With such a poor attitude and service, I've decided that I will never go back there again.

Why is Petco even necessary? Have you ever traveled to places like Havana Cuba, Kathmandu Nepal, or the many, many cities and countries of the world that have stray dogs and cats. I find myself becoming depressed sometimes, seeing the stray dogs and animals that are starving. I think to myself, where are the Petco's out here?! But in much of the world, people are barely making it themselves, so the animals of course take a back seat. That's why Petco is a necessity. Sure, buying online is less expensive and more convenient. But sometimes we need items immediately, whether it's for our dogs, cats, fish, rodents, reptiles, etc. Or maybe we have cat or dog that is a finicky eater and need to constantly exchange foods to something they will eat. And for me, even though there are no stray dogs in the US, there are stray cats that could use a meal or treat, and a quick stop to Petco can provide that immediately. While the customer service is nonexistent, navigating a pet store isn't rocket science. Grab what you need, have the cashier ring it up, and go about your business.

Before training, we struggled with leash pulling, barking, lunging at other dogs, and nonstop chaos whenever someone came through the door. We were honestly at our wits' end. Everything changed after I saw Bryan in Jackson Square walking a calm, perfectly behaved pack of dogs. We started weekly family lessons in January 2026 with our dogs and our two 12-year-old daughters, and progress began almost immediately. Bryan quickly helped us realize the humans needed training too. With consistent coaching, support, and a board-and-train program, the transformation has been incredible. Our dogs are now well-behaved both at home and in public. We can comfortably walk them, take them to parks and outdoor restaurants, and genuinely enjoy being with them. Friends and family who knew our dogs before cannot believe the difference in their behavior. Thank you, Bryan. You really can teach old dogs new tricks.

Bit of background: Maggie has done 12 weekly group training sessions with another trainer and is generally well-behaved. However, she doesn't read the social signals from other dogs well (ex: when they want to be left alone), tends to jump on everyone at all times, doesn't respond to commands unless there's a treat involved, and lacks confidence. What I enjoyed about the program is that it includes several in person training sessions during the B&T. We got to see Maggie's progress as time went on and most importantly, we were trained on their behavior psychology and how to become the leaders of our pack. I will say I was nervous about implenting the ecollar but Bryan has demonstrated that it is a safe and effective training tool-- I got to see it used as a tool for correction that Maggie actually responded well to. Maggie is coming home tomorrow and hand-off includes an in-home training sessions to ensure her progress doesn't regress which I appreciate. From what I've seen, Maggie has become more confident, responds to recalls in distracting places (no treats involved), learned to self-soothe, and plays/greets other dogs/people with manners. Truly the best investment I've made in my dog and I'd highly recommend Mutt and Tumble to all dog parents!

The moment I spoke to Kathy on the phone, I felt confident she truly understood the problem and could guide us in the right direction. And she absolutely has. Over the past year, Checkers has made tremendous progress thanks to Kathy's knowledge, patience, and the clear guidance she gave us. We followed her suggestions carefully--even switching vets based on her recommendation--and the results have been life-changing. Earlier this year, we had to travel out of the country and trusted Kathy to board Checkers. During that time, he developed a beautiful bond with her partner Dan. This was nothing short of amazing, as Checkers has always been fearful of men. Watching their relationship grow has been such a gift. With Kathy's help (and the influence of her own two balanced dogs), Checkers has learned how to be a dog--something I once thought might never happen. He now participates in pack walks and can even run off-leash in the fields, something I couldn't have imagined a year ago. If you're struggling with your dog's behavior and feel like nothing is working, do yourself and your dog a favor and call Kathy. Over the last few weeks, things escalated to the point where she began attacking our other dog whenever someone came to the door or a package was delivered. During one of these incidents, my husband was accidentally bitten while trying to break up a fight. That's when we realized we needed professional help -- fast. It had gotten so serious that we had even begun discussing the heartbreaking possibility of rehoming her, simply for the safety of everyone involved. That fear, and the emotional pain that came with it, weighed heavily on our hearts. But after just one session with Gusty, that painful thought is now firmly in the past. Enter Gusty. In just one session, our lives changed. The nuisance barking stopped entirely. Our dog no longer jumps up on us when we walk through the door, even when she's excited. Her nipping and playfully aggressive behavior has been replaced by belly-up submissiveness and endless kisses. She's calmer, more docile, and truly feels like a different dog. What impressed me most was that all of this happened while my four-year-old son was in the background, constantly needing my attention. Gusty was incredibly patient, understanding, and focused throughout. She clearly cares deeply about what she does and wants nothing more than to help dogs and their human family. During our next sessions, we'll work on leash training and eventually help our dog learn that she doesn't need to be so protective of our son. Based on what we've already seen, I have no doubt that training will go just as smoothly. I can't recommend Gusty enough.
