The Westlake Lead Petco dog behavior trainer Uses military- style dog training where he himself was trained. He does not hesitate to interrupt your shopping and ask to show you some dog tips. Beware! Twice on occasion when I have gone in, he has "asked" to demonstrate training skills. Boy! I couldn't believe how hard he jerked my puppy's collar when she didn't follow the sit command. He uses the "skill" of a leash "jerk" on the collar to correct a dog's non-desired behavior (such as pulling on the leash on a walk). The "jerk" can be substituted with a "choke if using a prong collar or a shock if using an electronic collar, both of which I could guess he uses in his training. At the time this FIRST occurred my puppy was 6 mos old and had been in training for 8 weeks already through an Austin program that utilizes Positive reinforcement methods (which usually use praise, treats, and sometimes clickers, head halter collars, or a gentle leader. Things are going well, I avoid this store whenever I can. Petco needs a new lead trainer who has training in more than one method. I also prefer a non smoking trainer. read more

Avoid taking your pet for grooming at this Petco. The groomer who worked on our dog several times has a nasty attitude toward pets in general. She complained about having to work with our pet (maybe my $10 tip was below her expectations). My primary regret is that we patronized the place, overpaying for grooming and good, as long as we did. read more

They have walk in services available and I've now tried twice to get my dog in for a walk in service. The first time they told me they were too busy and could only cut his nails but couldn't take the time to do the face, feet and fanny walk in trim. The second time I tried, the guy told me it was a 20 minute wait so I said fine. I waited 30 minutes and then he told me he wasn't done and it was going to be another 15 minutes. I walked out. He called me to try to apologize and pretty much told me that I should make an appointment! For a walk in service!! Will not be going back here. read more

I go here to buy the Bio Spot flea and tick (mosquitos) chemical. Only one I use. Much less expensive then the name brands and it WORKS!!!

What is the point of having an order online feature that shows where and what store location has the product available? You place the order and choose to drive an extra 20 mins out of your way, to realize they don't have your complete order. The reason why I chose the store is because it said it was available and let me check out with it in my cart. Then while I call customer service, I am on hold for 35 mins, I couldn't wait anymore! The automated recording was driving me insane! EVERY 30 seconds: we value our customers time, thanks for waiting. If you valued my time- give me back the 35 mins I've waited on the phone and also the time it took to drive to the store further away that said my product was available back! Annoyed. read more

However, the higher-than-their-competitors prices will lead me to go elsewhere. I came here because it's close to my office. I made an appointment for first thing in the morning for my dog to be groomed so that I would use my lunch break to bring him him once he's done. My dog is nine yrs old, 20lbs shih-poo and hypoallergenic so he's been getting groomed nearly every 3 months most of his time with me (he was rescued at age 3). He certainly isn't new to grooming and used to get great reviews, but as he's gotten older he started getting bad reviews (over the last year) from the groomers and the last Petco we went to (the Brodie lane location) used a muzzle, which used safely is completely fine by me. I completely warned this new groomer of his fears, particularly with his nails and she made a comment that it was noted from his previous visits. We have a few minutes introduction and the groomer was very nice and I thought my guy would do just fine once he got a bit more comfortable with her. He was super nervous and a little shaky when I left, but that's not exactly a new thing for him. I'm at my desk for less than 10 minutes before I get a call from her saying I need to go pick him up because he bit her while she was attempting to do his nails and its their policy that they won't finish the groom. I felt awful and dashed over there once a coworker turned up. She told me that petco no longer allows muzzles and that she can usually read a dogs warning but my guy gave her no such warning, while she was trimming his nails. I've groomed my dog before and it was no walk in the park at all (he actually is just fine for baths though). I felt so unbelievably awful he bit her (he didn't break skin). I do think that I should have been warned of their 'he bites we refuse service and we no longer use muzzles' policy. It had to have been noted that he was muzzled previously, she even stated so. I'm no dog behaviorist, but after all I said to her about his fear for: nail trimming (in particular), he's older, he's a rescue with some anxiety issues...wouldn't you wait until the end to attempt the nails after you've gained some trust with the dog to attempt that? Wouldn't you start in slow, like with the bath part, first? To me that shows inexperience and not really caring at all about the customer (me) after all I just told her about him, or the pooch. I almost felt like she just didn't even try. Instead I had to make my awesome morning commute twice, lose my lunch break and my poor dude was clearly upset when I got him... and she got bit! I think it all could have been avoided with better communication with me about how Petco now deals with tough dogs, and a more experienced groomer. I probably would have said to not even do the nails if I knew that, and I still just don't understand why that was the first thing she did. She was very nice and gave me some other places to maybe go to, but I still felt really bad and over protective for my dog. I felt like a mom picking up a kid at the principals office or something. I won't be bringing him back here for grooming (which I'm sure they are happy about) and others should know about this new grooming policy and how little attention they give to how to handle your buddy. read more

This review is for the grooming department, specifically Jaxon. He is the reason that I bring my dog to this location for bath/brush instead of the Petco closet to my house. My dog only needs a bath and de-shedding treatment every couple months but I always feel good leaving her with Jaxon. He is sweet to her and engages with her when she comes in like he remembers her (even if he doesn't) I've gone to some places and they just drag them bag without much to say. So for me Jaxon deserves 5 stars! read more

Do not shop here for pet food unless you only want the high end or specialty stuff. Its not from a lack of space, for example there are three whole isles full of dog food, but none of it was anything but the high end stuff. As well as their fish section lacking in selection and knowledge from staff. overall you can get a better experience, and better selection somewhere else. read more

I have been in that store 3 times and all 3 times noone helped and if I asked a question I am looked at like I am stupid- I prefer to spend my money at Tomlinsons across the street- they are kinder and down to earth-This store sooooo overpriced and to have crude workers on top of that? Great customer service and always helpful. I googled this morning for the phone number to call and saw the yelp reviews and had to take the time to stop and review. I read the other reviews and I do not agree- they have always been helpful, sometimes going out of their way to help me whether it be questions on our fish (we have a beta and a pond), our cats or our dog. I have never encountered a rude person there or anyone unwilling to help. We have been thrilled with the groomers- our dog had a bad experience getting his nails trimmed at the vet and he is very very very anxious when you go near his feet and the groomers here at petco are nice, sweet and gentle with him and though he doesn't love it, he doesn't mind it either which to me says a lot for them. As for maybe running late on an appointment or something- well, i have yet to ever encounter a salon for myself that has not been late - spa, hair, nails or pedicure. Be realistic. Things happen and If i had to guess they were probably late here or there due to people arriving late, taking extra time and care with a pet or who knows- it happens. Again, I was not intending to review them but I think it unfair to see them sitting here with such bad reviews. People never want to review when it's good, only when they are mad. Everyone has a bad day here and there. Just be realistic. In my opinion, they are great, love what they do, and if they don't, they act like they do. I give them 5 stars. read more

I was pet sitting for my boyfriend's dog while he was visiting family out of state. I thought I'd surprise him by having his pup professionally groomed. Scout is a long-haired beauty who hates to be brushed and has never been professionally clipped. Shawna was professional, kind, patient and gentle. Her transformation of Scout was nothing short of mind-blowing and actually brought me to tears. Outstanding job! We will be back. read more

Have only used grooming once as I have small dogs I can bathe easily. With the really unpleasant professionally knowledgeably vacant immature staff; I wouldn't even consider using the HMO plan with their veterinary services though I have a friend who is happy with it. They are always out of something I came in for and particular the bulk treats. Every time I get a different ridiculous answer for this ranging from upgrading to a new good treat (thanks for that) to I don't know when we are going to get it to I don't know. This has happened for months sometimes and the only time I ever go there is that it is very near. Far from anticipating a positive shopping experience (having what I need and not hearing I don't know) it is anticipated as one of the low point of errands. Thank goodness for Tomilsons across the street. They may not be perfect but at least their is a manager near by to support staff versus pet co whose typically introverted mgr. is stocking or hiding in the back. read more

I recently took my pit bull in for an assessment with Jordan Diaz, DTI. I am so impressed with his extensive knowledge and skill as a dog trainer! With Jordan's expert advice and mentorship, I feel better equipped to help my dog who is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder after a brutal dog attack. After a short 30 min session, Olive behaves like a new dog and I have some new skills that I can apply to my interactions with her on a daily basis. When I entered this establishment, I was blown away by the customer service, nearly everyone working that day greeted me and asked if I needed any help. The dog trainer approached me and help me find the best dog food and gave me excellent advice on puppy care. I took one his training classes and my dog is turning out better than I ever expected. I've take my dog here several times. Last two visits were horrible. Today was final straw. My appt was for 3:00. They said 3 hours when I dropped him off. It didn't look crowded in grooming when I dropped him, three groomers and only two dogs on the tables. Two customers in the store shopping. When back at 5:15 to see if he was finished early. Guy at register said he wouldn't be ready until 7:00! There were no groomers and dogs in the grooming room! Asked for the manager. The sole groomer who was still there came out and said, "He'd be done but your dog doesn't like the dryer." My dog never has problems with a dryer unless the operator doesn't know what they are doing. She said they were swamped with dogs and that is the reason for delay. This made no sense as they require reservations to take a dog for a grooming and are never reluctant to tell you they don't overbook. And of course, they had only one groomer working at 5:00, so they could not have been that swamped. i told the manager to bring dog out, I was not coming back at 6:00 PM or later. He then had the nerve to charge 42.00 for nothing more than the shampoo and wouldn't bring the dog up until paid. When the groomer brought him out, nothing more than his paws and part of his tail were barely damp. FYI, when I walked in to the store, there was a woman complaining to the grooming manager about the same issue of her dog not being ready when they promised and it didn't sound like her first time having the same problem. My advise, avoid this store. I see from other reviews, I am not the only person who has had the same problems. I agree with Chris H. They not only have contempt for their customers, they don't like the dogs. The pierced groomer who brought my dog out, sprayed him in the face with powder scent before handing him over. The manager who wrote the 4/23/11 response to the bad reviews sounds as defensive as the manager i spoke to today. Calling his customers high maintenance shows his utter contempt for his customers. Petco would be wise to fill the store with new employees. read more

if you love your dog- do not take them here. our dog, like most, is nervous to get groomed. we made an apt for 10:00 - we brought in our dog and they said it would be an hour. 2 1/2 hours later, they called and said that the groomer who was scheduled at 11:00 did not show up so come pick up our dog - no service. first, why would did they make an apt for 10:00 if the groomer wasn't coming in until 11:00 and why did they let our dog sit in a kennel for another hour and 1/2 before calling. our dog is a shelter dog and afraid of kennels so we went through all of this and he did not even get groomed. I called the manager to discuss. - she did not seem to care. she said is was grooming manager responsibility. I left my number for her - never heard from them again. this is actually the second time we brought our dog there - first time was ok??? but we had to bring him back because they forgot to cut his nails. --- pretty basic???? read more
