This location is always clean and the associates are always very friendly. Today I had the pleasure of meeting Darion, a new associate. I recently bought a double tail male beta fish for my students as our class pet to replace the one that passed during Snowzilla, when schools were closed for a week and a half. We named our new pet Atlantis on Friday! So imagine my surprise and heartbreak when I saw him at the bottom of the fish tank Monday morning. After school I return to Petco with my receipt (always keep your receipts because you never know when you have to return something!) and the deceased Atlantis. I went straight to the available register and handed them my fish and they instructed me to just go back and get another. I grabbed another double tell male beta fish and in less than five minutes my students had a new class pet. Then I remembered that I needed to pick something up for Gemini because she's been suffering from allergies and dry skin. It wasn't very busy, but rather than just telling me that it's located in the back Darion left the register and walked me to the back, helped me pick out an oatmeal Teatree conditioning spray and then walked me back to the front and rang me up. Before I left the I interacted with three associates and they were all very helpful and very nice. It was a really good experience. read more

Our corgi is only six months old, so he only got the shampoo, ear cleaning, and nail trim. I love this Petco, though I wish it were closer to my home. Anytime I have business in this area and also happen to need pet supplies, I'll try to make my way here. They seem to stock lots of specialty items that PetSmart doesn't offer, like higher end cat food brands or supplements such as l-lysine. The prices for some of the staple items, such as Purina brand items, tend to be higher priced than PetSmart, so I don't buy my base items from Petco and usually stick to coming here for my specialty items. The one exception is their litter; their store brand litter is very good. I appreciate also that you can take an empty bucket and refill it for a discounted price, which is also more eco-friendly. read more

I waited an hour and a half longer than I should have and spent 6 hours in Baileys Crossroads, Virginia (not my cup of tea and the only reason I was here was because I needed something ASAP). You would think with the extra hour and a half, my dogs would look amazing; however, they looked like rats. One came out STILL WET and his hair was STILL MATTED. The hair length is inconsistent and jagged, it looks like I did this myself not something I paid 140 dollars for. I don't know how Kristine messed it up, I showed her photos of the Cavaliers and the lengths I would like them to be. This place is so unprofessional, no call to let me know they would be an hour and a half late, no thank you for your patience, etc. And then Kristine is going to be like "OMG winstons hair is so tangled in his tail", yeah, I know, that is why he is here getting groomed!!!! Dear Petco, Hi! I'm an 11 year old girl, and I recently had a very depressing and disturbing visit at one of your stores located at 5825 Leesburg Pike, Bailey Crossroads, VA 22041. I went to the store a couple days ago with my mom. We went there to look at the animals there, and what we saw made us sad. Pretty much all of the animals there were either dying, sick, looking depressed, dead, or trying to escape from their undersized enclosures. A lot of the animals, specifically the hamsters and the guinea pigs, were crammed together in groups of about 3 in tiny glass tanks with few toys and things to entertain themselves with. We even saw a couple flies flying around in some of the tanks. The hamster cages had unsafe hamster wheels that could really hurt the hamsters. A hamster could easily fling off that horrible thing and break a couple bones! The guinea pig cages were WAYYY too small for one guinea pig, let alone 3. Guinea pigs like to run around and need space to do so. All the the guinea pigs looked depressed. When we looked at the reptile section, things were the slightest bit more decent but still terrible. There was a big tank crawling with baby bearded dragons, and one of them was almost dead. It had its eyes closed, unlike the others, and it was really weak. It had a piece of its own poop on its head, and it wasn't moving. It looked sick, and yet it wasn't being taken in to be looked at and treated. A couple of the other baby bearded dragons looked as if they were grieving for their friend. My mom and I also saw 2 ball pythons crammed together in a small glass tank, and they were trying to escape their little enclosure. I'm no snake expert, but from the way that they were acting I could tell that their enclosure was WAY too small. From there, we decided to move on and look at the fish. I'll admit, some of the fish tanks were actually decent. But when we went to look at the betta section, we were horrified by what we saw. The bettas were in these small plastic containers like you would see in any ordinary commercial pet store, but all the containers were crammed together in these small, dark shelves. There was even a baby betta fish in there, labeled "baby boy", but he was dead. He was at the bottom of the container, his eyes were glassy and he wasn't moving at all. This was really depressing, as he never got a chance to become an adult betta fish. I'm sure if he was better taken care of, he would've had that chance. We went to notify a staff member about the dead baby fish, and she replied with "Oh yeah, we have dead fish. We do an hourly scooping to get the dead ones out of there. Next one's at 5:00. Thanks for telling me though!" This disturbed me because of the use of the word "hourly". Hourly dead fish scoopings?! It's a shame that deaths in that store happen so often that the scoopings have to be hourly. My mom and I decided to leave after that. This is not okay. These innocent animals don't deserve to be treated this way! This could easily be categorized as animal abuse. This trip was so saddening and disturbing, I cried for a long time because of it. If it was possible to give 0 stars, I would. I traveled 40min from DC into VA for a cat grooming appt. I called ahead of time, informed them my cat was undergoing flea treatment and was a longhair, so I really just wanted to get her shaved so I had an easier time spot treating her and removing them from her coat. I also informed them that she was not good w/baths (I have yet to meet a cat that is). When I arrived for my appt, the groomer (Fermin) was late, and then decided he would cancel my appt since my cat hissed at him when coming out of the carrier. I called 14 other pet spas/salons/vets to try and find another place to get her shaved on such short notice, but had no luck. Considering this is the only PETCO in the DMV that does cat grooming, one would think their cat groomers would know how to handle a hissing cat during a bath. read more

This is for the grooming department, Brenda was absolutely amazing with my 2 babies. I easily booked online and she told me they'd be done around 3 hrs but they were done sooner, they looked so good! This review is for the grooming salon at this location. We took our Goldendoodle to be groomed by Fermin and it was just an awful groom. Extremely uneven, way shorter than i wanted, used clippers only on his face destroying the shape, and didn't listen to a word I said about how i wanted it styled/shaped... I even walked Fermin through photos on my phone of his previous grooms and he just looked awful after and nothing like himself. Its been almost a month and his haircut is still uneven and a hot mess. His ears were not even touched and cleaned either even though we paid for it to be added on. I would not recommend saving a few dollars by taking your dog here. Spend the extra money to get them properly groomed elsewhere. read more

A quarter of my tank just died overnight after purchasing two cory cats and a catfish from this store. I had a $50 red pleco (that had lived two years prior to this incident) that is now dead as a result of some disease that was spread to my tank by THIS STORE! I called multiple times trying to get answers to see if they knew what was going around and had any answers to this outbreak that could help save the rest of my tank. They didn't answer a single phone call and it automatically hung up on me every single time after ringing for 5 minutes... I was super disappointed that no one could help me and that I probably won't even be refunded for the damage they did to my fish. My fish may not be as important as someones dog or cat, but any fish lovers know how terribly devastating this is to loose a quarter of your tank in less than 24 hrs... This review is based on the store only. I haven't had any experience with the grooming. However, I see their are a lot of bad reviews on their grooming. The store I've always had a good experience with they actually always have a variety of pets available unlike other places like other petco's & Petsmart stores. The staff has always been very helpful. They even go out of their way to show and explain to you how you can get items in the store at a lower price if you price match with the online prices. (Which I didn't know and wasn't even thinking about because I was in a bit of a rush) I really appreciated how they did that! That was extremely helpful! read more

Stopped by to get some suggestions for healthy food for my new puppy but I stood in one spot looking confused and not one associate stopped to ask me if I needed help so I drove to Petsmart and right away I got help. The groomer at this Petco ended up shaving our dog's underbelly. My wife and I own a Maltese/Shih Tzu mix and we asked for his hair to be trimmed not shaved. He was in pain due to the razor burns that the groomer gave him. My wife had to take him to the vet by taxi over to the Columbia Pike Animal Hospital. Our vet said that he would've had a serious infection if he was treated a day later. We've spoken to the manager and he said Petco Corporate would reimburse us for the cost of the grooming, taxi, and vet bills. It's been over two weeks and I haven't received anything yet. I've spoken to 4 different people and they've advised me that Petco Corporate hasn't given the okay to reimburse us. I brought Loxli here today to get a bath and shave. She has never been professionally groomed before, so I was for sure going to be around during the experience. Loxli is a 5 1/2 year old domestic short hair tuxedo cat that has been with me through thick and thin. She is indeed my baby, and I have had her since she was 6 weeks old. Today when I took her to the groomer -- the head groomer manager manhandled her. I get they have to do what they have to do to hold the animal down to cooperate, but the way she was jerked around and crying wasn't justification for me to accept how he dealt with her. I was extremely disappointed in how she treated her. He kept insisting that I 'come back' and 'I told you 2:30'. Hell nah, man. It's 1:30, and I have nothing but time. I'm going to watch your ass on how you handle my animal. I have typically groomed her myself because of the mere fact of how often I hear horror stories of how my friends' pets come home in pain because of a bad cut, or bad clipping. I thought I would just bite the bullet and take her to see what the experience was like. As far as the outcome of the nail clipping - they're extremely too short. They are down to the quick of her nail past the red part. It should never go past the red part. The haircut turned out fine. She now looks like the queen lioness that she really is with her lion cut. It's really cute on her. Despite the look, I don't fathom I would want to return this location based on the unethical treatment she experienced. Call me harsh or overly sensitivity to her needs, but I truly just can't bear the thought of her going through that again. She'll just have mommy do it from now on as she has been.... read more

What a crackerjack, fly-by-night, stone-age vaccination clinic they are running here! Unless you want to spend 2.5 hours waiting around, do not go here! The process is completely inefficient and has gotten worse since the last time I was here: 1) 20 minutes waiting in line to "check-in" which only consists of giving them your phone number so they can text you. 2) 80 minutes waiting until you can "officially" check-in which only consists of giving them your pet's name and telling them which vaccine you need. 3) 40 minutes waiting until you can get the vaccine. At the same time, the conveniently forget there is a queue and start letting people go ahead of others. 4) Get back in line to pay. You must get in FOUR lines to get through this process. My poor cat was crated for over 3 hours. I would never had agreed to this had I known in advance but their process strings people along by offering incorrect waiting times and only giving out pieces of information at a time. Additionally, they didn't even close the crate after the vaccine and had I not caught it, my cat would have tumbled out into a busy parking lot. Never again!! read more

I came to this Petco on a Saturday to add to my aquarium...decor, maintenance and other supplies. Petco is okay in a pinch but I wouldn't shop here regularly. I was disappointed to see that the live plants in the tank were all moldy or whatever it is plants get. Could be old stock since the tank was less than half full of plants...but to see these conditions in 2 tanks made me doubtful. And why leave old, rotting plants in there for customers to see? The line was pretty long and growing yet there was no call for additional help at the registers. Most people shop on the weekends since most have M-F jobs so we take care of our errands on Saturdays and Sunday's. Another downer is the fact that they don't match their online prices...which sometimes offers considerable savings. But if you read reviews for some items online, you'll see complaints of damaged goods. One more little tidbit that may be of help is that if you want to purchase the display furniture model since there is no other stock (such as an aquarium stand), they will not offer a discount since it is a display AND they will charge you an assembly fee. read more

Went here to buy a small crate for dog. The crates are all on top of the food aisles and are DISGUSTING and matted in dirt dust and debris. Plus the cost good money. I personally wouldnt touch those crates with a ten foot pole. The whole store seemed dirty and smelly and used up. My wife and I brought our 7 month goldendoodle here for a grooming last month. We were told it would take a maximum of 4 hours but he was not ready for roughly 6.5 hours, following very little communication. When he was examined by their groomer, he told us he was covered in matted hair and would require a buzz cut. Our dog is extremely curling and requires constant brushing on a daily basis. The groomer stated that we do not manage his hair appropriately to expect any other grooming option. When we picked our dog up, the groomer apologized and stated that after a bath and brushing, there was in fact no evidence of matted hair, and yet he still received a buzz cut. Several spots were inconsistent including under his arms and around his tail, of which we cut ourselves at home. We appreciated his apology despite the harsh criticism and in fact recommended to a fellow dog owner given the timely availability for an appointment. Unfortunately, their situation was more of the same with uneven grooming and uniform buzz cut. Will not recommend their services moving forward. read more

We were extremely disappointed when we picked up our golden retriever from her haircut. Although we asked very specifically to keep the length of her coat and to only trim certain areas which we pointed out directly, when we got her she had been shaved everywhere, her beautiful soft golden fur had been buzzed all over, chopped and uneven. She was almost unrecognizable. We should have known what to expect when all 4 of the dogs getting groomed when we dropped her off had the same haircut. On top of that, she seemed traumatized and we can only guess what happened, but no one working in the grooming center seemed to have any bedside mannerisms in the interactions we witnessed between them and the dogs. Our dog is a little nervous and we told them this when we dropped her off but it seems that no care was taken to try and make this experience less horrible for her. We will absolutely never take our dog back and if you are expecting a decent haircut beyond "what length do you want us to buzz your dog?" you shouldn't either. read more

I recently got an 8 week old pup and needed to find a place where to get her vaccinated. After some research I called a couple of places including this Petco location. As soon as I called the person I spoke to was so kind and informative. I had a lot of questions which he graciously answered and he even gave me tips on what time to get there, and price packages. When we arrived on Sunday, the store was incredibly busy but we were quickly greeted and checked in. We waited for around an hour but it didn't even matter because everyone at the store was so attentive and helpful. Once it was finally our turn, the vets were amazing and made the process such a positive experience. Our pup didn't even cry after her first shot. We will be coming back in 4 weeks for her second round of shots, and we are so happy to know there's a wonderful team at this location that works incredibly hard to ensure that first time puppy owners like myself are well informed and feel comfortable. read more

I was here to pick up a few new chew toys for my dog... First of all: Rawhide bones are cheaper at Target. Petco wants $5/bone, while Target sells a pack of 4 for $11. Some guy was there buying his kids some goldfish and they tormented my dog... They approached like they were going to pet him, then ran away giggling. Repeatedly. While I was in the checkout line. My dog barked at them. A lot. The guy did nothing. I couldn't wait to leave. They are overpriced but have a large selection. That's my only pro, I guess. I can't comment on grooming. I come here all the time for dog food for my puppy Lexi. Lexi is kinda bouncy but listens pretty well for a young high energy dog. The staff here love her and all the people love to come pet her. The store always has what we are looking for and the prices are pretty good. I do have one problem though. They always want to sell me on dog training. They say things like "I see she is pulling" which I think is unfair since we are in a pet store with raw hides and toys and treats and food and mice and ferrets and .......... all around. She is over stimulated there so it shows off her worst. I wish they would just let me take care of my dog. read more

My pitbull Mocha is a pretty reactive dog, so I wasn't sure how she would do in a pet grooming environment with other dogs around but our groomer, David always makes sure she is comfortable, happy and safe. He does a great job handling her and makes her look great in 1 hour, with bath, brush and other miscellaneous grooming like her nails, teeth and ears. I had to ask her to remove them and get new items after she touched them. That's so germy and gross. You don't know what kind of germs that snake has. This location is alright. It isn't as nice as the PETSMART on RT. 50 some of the employes here don't give a rat's ass about the animals there. The manager (The guy who walks around with a parrot) is very committed to these animals, but the other employees can be very foolish. The prices are indeed a bit high compared to other places. Sometimes it can be a bit messy in here, I usually come here to help out with adoption events now that Homeward Trails comes here. I would suggest on going to PETSMART rather than coming here just because this location has pretty crappy staff. The check out lanes can be up to four lines but they never use more than one check out lane. I don't know why it's that way but it just is. Finding people to help you can also be difficult as well. So over all it's ok but it's defiantly NOT the best it could be. read more
