I experienced the worst customer service in that store. I was struggling with holding my purchases and trying to get something bulky off a high shelf while a "manager" stood 5 feet away having a personal conversation with someone and did nothing to assist me. When I asked to speak with a manager, that was the person they called to the front. I told him what I experienced and he got angry and told me the other person he was talking to didn't even work in the store. Then he walked away, about 2 isles down he yelled back "you could just ask for help". After that I could hear him all way at the front register complaining about me. I asked to another manager and the 2nd person did say they would discuss the situation with the employee. Not sure if they actually will. That employee not only provided poor customer service, but was unprofessional and rude. read more

Animals are in poor condition. Especially the reptiles. This store has no business having a savannah monitor, or any other reptiles. Enclosures are dirty, basking and humidity are off. It was unfortunate to find out that the grooming salon was closed for the evening when I arrived with my dog for a 1:30pm appointment. Considering I received a confirmation call and text about my booked appointment, it was extremely inconsiderate and unprofessional to not have received any notice of the salon being closed or the cancellation on my appointment. There were no helpful store members to assist with rebooking, no compensation offered for the inconvenience, and ultimately no apology. I have had bad experiences with PetSmart lately that I thought I would try Petco instead, but I was once again let down. Talk about customer service.... read more

enough is enough!! In April 2021 I went on line and made a grooming appt. for my dog. when I did not receive a confirmation, I called the store. The woman who answered the phone assured me that they do not make appts on line. I then tried to make an appt with her. She looked Bridget up in her computer and noted that she had only been there for nail trimming in the past and not a full grooming. Therefore she would be very likely to have an anxiety attack and I would only have to go back and take her home. Bridget is a 12 yo, 31pound spaniel who has had regular grooming elsewhere all her life without an anxiety attack. She still insisted that this would be a problem. It became clear to me that she just didn't want to book an appt. Made me regret the nice tips for having her nail trimmings. On May 31, I stopped into the store while shopping for a new harness for Bridget. I was approached by an employee who I thought was trying to help me. I was looking for a color that they didn't have and I wanted to see if it could be ordered.. She pulled out her phone and started showing me all the places on line where I could get what I want. In a voice that I took as being very annoyed, she said " I know who you are. You're in here all the time" In 7yrs, I have been in that store (not counting nail trimmings) about 1 or 2 times a year if even that. I guess that is too much for her. Not to worry, I won't bother them again. P.S. We now have a new groomer in the area. They were able to groom Bridget with no anxiety attack. It must be a special skill. read more

Honestly terrible customer service. The younger ppl that work there are kind but the older ones have an attitude even though you are friendly. I asked for the flea drops that they have locked and they gave me the wrong ones. Didn't realize until I left so I returned and they still gave me the wrong ones. To be honest it doesn't seem like even they know their product well enough to help their customers. You kinda have to go in knowing what you're getting. Not to mention it's super expensive. Stick to curbside pickup. You won't have to deal with rude customer service and you get a discount online. read more

This has happened twice now. The first time I let it slide, but Monday put me over the edge. I was bringing in my three dogs in to be groomed. My appointment was for 1:00. I arrived at 12:35. I figured like every groomer that they would take them in the back and put them in a kennel until they were ready. With only one groomer, they would have to put them there right?! When I arrived, there was a lady sitting there without any dogs (the door to the kennels was open). She proceeded to tell me that the groomer was on lunch. I said I can't leave them here until their appointments. She went to go ask someone. As she was coming back, the groomer came in the front door. She proceeded to tell me that she was on lunch and that I would have to come back at 1pm. What happened to customer service?!!! I told her to cancel the appointments and I will go elsewhere. Previous times, the groomers have openly complained to one another while me, the customer, is standing there. It's my fault for going back. So unprofessional and un-accommodating. Max and Foxie appreciate me doing a review for PetCo. They love the toys I get them from here and the stylish selection of collars, leashes and treats. The one thing that I enjoy most about this store is that they host pet adoptions from animal rescues. A definate plus! If you're looking for a dog to rescue, come here and dave of these guys! Last time I went with my fiance and we saw a beautiful German Shepard and Labrador retriever. I felt heart broken seeing the sadness in their eyes. A positive note and added bonus, I picked up blinking l.e.d. collars for our dogs since we like to walk them at night. I recently moved and found an item purchased in Thousand Oaks quite some time ago. Yes truth is quite some time ago. But since I purchase pet items all the time I confirmed that the item is still being sold by Petco and went to now my local Petco in Camarillo. I told them the truth and said item (not food or anything that would spoil) had never been opened and could they give me a store credit since I had items to purchase. He said it was apparently over 60 days which is their return policy and I did not have a receipt. I said that was true but again was askng for store credit not actual refund. He said he would ask manager; he said manager said no. I got frustrated (which I should not have done I am just tired of poor customer service) and said you keep it I have no use for it. Now I realize maybe the Thousand Oaks store would have given me a store credit. I happen to look at their corporate web site and came across the following: "Returns without a receipt or made after 60 days are eligible for in-store only merchandise credit to the lowest company-wide price at whichthe returned products were sold". This tells me they didn't even follow company policy. I then called there today to speak to manager; assistant manager got on the phone. It was quite obvious he was not paying attention to me and in fact started laughing. well, shame on you Petco Camarillo. Item was valued at about $30 and I would probably have spent close to $60 and would have continued to shop there. I will never set foot in that store again. read more

My family and I received such beyond-the-norm service that I felt it necessary to make a comment. I rarely recommend or berate an establishment unless they've gone "above and beyond". That is what we experienced at PetCo in Camarillo this past Saturday! It was obvious that my family was simply researching various types of pets for our children, and weren't planning on purchasing anything immediately. That being said, and knowing that subconsciously, my family had THREE workers ready and willing to assist us, and answer any beginning pet owner's questions...I had young children with me - many questions! - and the workers (and manager!) took it all in stride, informing us about the animals varied needs, foods, handing, etc. One of the workers even worked past her fear of snakes simply to show my 13 year-old son a Ball Python! She knew that we weren't planning on purchasing immediately, in the process of research, and yet was so willing to handle the snake, finally saved by not only the manager, but another co-worker, willing to assist! I know it's a long review, but I want to give credit to anyone who goes well beyone their "job description", especially when it comes to helping kids and answering their questions! It was a busy Saturday afternoon, but we left with a mental shopping list of what the kids were going to save their allowance up for, and we just wanted to let the coworkers know that their personal service was not only noted, but much appreciated! read more

One of the reasons I frequent Petco is that they invite animal rescue organizations in to promote adoptions. Last time I was there, a gentleman from a local organization had several small dogs he was showing for adoption. They also have dog training classes, and for my kitties the Greenies pill pockets that I absolutely recommend for getting capsules down kitties. My little female loves them, and thank goodness I no longer have to force feed her the pills every day. read more

I live around the corner and go here probably once a week for my fish and bunny. The fish are always healthy with no signs of disease or snails. I have easily bought 50+ here and only one has died within 30 days. Staff is friendly and prompt. Glad I'm so close. read more

I went in with my 5 year old daughter . We've been talking about getting a guinea pig so we went to look and saw one we were interested in adopting . Talked to one of the employees and had her set me up with everything I would need , probably $400 in total worth of stuff to start us out with . She recommended a topless octagon shaped cage , so i wanted to go home and measure the space and see how it would fit in the area before I purchased it . ( the cage was not cheap and more than i what I wanted to spend so wanted to make sure it would fit right ) I realized that cage was not going to work for us . I wanted something I can maybe set up on top of a table or stand . So I returned to the store , ready to buy , but exchanged the octagon cage out with a cage ($85, more reasonable and better selection for us ) that clearly said for guinea pigs and was still huge in size ( a lot bigger than what the store keeps them in ) as she realized i switched the cages out , she then proceeds to tell me , she will not let me adopt or purchase the guinea pig because her recommendation is to up sell me a cage that wouldn't work for us !! My question is , why sale the other cages for guinea pigs in your store if you won't let the customer purchase it for a guinea pig that we wanted to adopt ! So you guys lost a $400 dollar sale , and the employees clearly made my daughter sad and she was rude about the whole sistuation! I would never walk back in that store ! read more

I was that person that came into the store right before closing (the one that everyone dreads)to exchange a reptile light. I bought the wrong one the night before because the previous one I just bought burnt out. I brought them both with me. I didn't have the receipt for the older one but I thought I'd ask if I could exchange it since I just got it maybe a month ago. The manager Eric informed me that he couldn't return it without the receipt. I work retail too so I totally understand, not a big deal but it was worth a shot. He went out of his way to track down the receipt even though I only had a general timeframe of when it was purchased. I didn't even ask him to look because I really wasn't upset, return policies exist everywhere...duh. I didn't bring my receipt, I knew it was probably a no-go but it never hurts to ask. Went for dog grooming into he past. Groomers did a great job. Manager has now twice quoted me the wrong price for the same service. Bath and haircut for a small dog is $46....bath alone was quoted as $15 ...today I call to come in sooner and the price flip flopped between $26 and $46 for a bath alone. I asked for a proper final price and the manager responded by saying she was too busy anyways and that might be a special but she only honors specials when they are not busy. Waited 10 mins at register and finally found the guy in the back playing with a dog. The lady in front of me got charged for 3 bags of food and only had 2. I followed her out to the parking lot and told her to check her receipt. Then he informed me that I am saying the breed of my dog wrong. I purchased him through a breeder who only breeds this type of dog. I am sure he knows how to pronounce it. I think the cashier had a little attitude because I came looking for him. Came here for training with Roxanne. My husky was her first dog at this location and she did an amazing job with my fur baby! Before my husky was wild and couldn't focus but now she listens to her commands and can patiently wait/stay. The other employees are also awesome at giving recommendations! I went to this store last night for the sole purpose of checking out bearded dragons sadly the cage was empty and stripped. however that wasn't my biggest complaint. I bring my dog into pet stores and let her pick out a treat or toy and she couldn't even walk on the floor. it was polished so much that I felt like I needed to buy shoes for her so she didn't end up throwing a hip out or something. I only saw 2 staff the whole time in there 1 was a very nice gentleman who came upto me and gave my dog some treats and offered us help, then there was another lady who pretty much just walks around like she hated her job didn't even make eye contact with me. The last time I went into the store to look at reptiles alot of them were in pretty poor shape Chameleon had scars all over same with the water dragon. I wont be bringing my dog back here in fear of injury and I wont be coming back unless PetSmart doesn't have what I'm looking for. read more

We (me, my husband, and my husband's family) have all had bad customer service experiences at this Petco, so I'm finally getting around to writing a review about it and finally making the decision never to patronize them again because the most recent incident was the last straw. I'm sure other people have had bad experiences with their grooming department and just haven't posted on Yelp; it can't just be us because this grooming department is terribly unprofessional. So, I will just write about the two biggest incidents: The first major thing that happened (we had had other, slightly less upsetting, things happen before) a few months ago was that my husband and I took our small dog in just to have her anal glands emptied. After I paid, picked her up, and took her home, we noticed that she still smelled as if she needed her glands emptied, so we called Petco and told the groomer. Only then did he inform us that he believed she had solid blockage that only a vet could remove (really great that they hire people who don't give two craps about your animal's health and will not willingly tell you if they think your dog needs to see a vet). So, the next day we took her to our vet. He checked her out and said she just had more normal anal fluid buildup and it looked as though Petco hadn't completely emptied the glands. The vet told us they should have been able to completely empty them and there was no solid blockage. He even showed us how to empty them ourselves at home! The "last straw" story involved my in-law's two dogs. They have been long-time customers of the grooming department at this Petco and have always paid around $80-90 total for bathing and grooming both dogs. My sister-in-law dropped both dogs off to be groomed and just signed the papers as she has always done and didn't even think to check them over because (1) she was in a hurry and (2) she has been going there for so long, it would seem a bit ridiculous to scrutinize the paperwork. She naturally just assumed they would charge her the same as always for the same services she always gets. Well, when my husband went to pick up the dogs as a favor to his sister, he was told that the total was $140. He told the person attending the grooming department that this is not the price his sister agreed to and they have always paid quite a bit less than that. The lady (who, actually turned out to be the assistent manager of the store apparently) smugly informed him with attitude oozing from her words that she, in fact, had agreed to the price by signing the papers when she dropped the dogs off. My husband fought her on this, saying that it was ridiculous that they would not inform long-time customers such as them that there had been a price change. The assistent manager proceeded to inform my husband that it should have been his sister who inspected the paperwork and that she has record in her computer that we "always get pissed off about the grooming services we solicit." Yes, she referred to us to my husband's face with the phrase "pissed off." I was flabbergasted when my husband told me this - not only because that is a completely inappropriate thing for an employee, an assistent manager no less, to say to a customer - but also because the only thing I can figure out is that the guy who "emptied" our female dog's anal glands must have made that note on our account and then the assistent manager who mouthed off saw it on my in-law's account. This is probably the case because our dog used to belong to my in-laws, so she is technically still on their Petco grooming account. So I'm assuming any "notes" that are entered in the system about mine and my husband's complaints would also show up when they pull up my in-laws' account. On top of the incredibly rude treatment by the assistent manager, they completely screwed up the haircut they did on my in-laws' smaller dog. The choppiness of the hair on his face is painfully obvious. AND they chopped off a bunch of the length on his ear hair; his ears were long and flowy, but now they are short, stubby, and they look like a terrible, frizzy, woman's bob haircut. PLUS his ears are uneven; yes, his formerly long, flowy ears are now stubby AND two different lengths! My mom owned a grooming business for 10 years, so I showed her the dog's haircut (she lives across the country or she would do our dogs' grooming) and she couldn't believe they hired people who couldn't properly cut a dog's hair. They did end up waiving the extra cost and charged the regular amount after my husband fought with them tooth and nail. But, of course, we will no longer be patronizing Petco's grooming center nor will we be shopping at their retail store any longer. Petsmart offers the same services for slightly more money, but good customer service and not being mouthed off to by the employees and manager is well worth the extra bucks. read more

I have been purchasing my cat food from here for years. Very friendly service, usually plenty of help. Then I compared them to other places... I went to Pet Smart and purchased food that was about half the price of Petco. (ProPlan cat food, small cans) Pet Smart = .50, Petco = .98 It was on sale at Pet Smart at that moment, but when sales were over... Pet Smart = .69, Pet Co = .98. The situation - I purchased the food at Pet Co, Next day stopped in Pet Smart (Thousand Oaks), saw the sale, bought several cases of food. Next day, went to pet co and I asked if they could refund me the difference, I had both receipts with me. He said I had to bring in the food un opened and they could do it. I told him I opened the case and use a can. Clerk told me that it couldn't be done then because the case was opened. I argued for awhile and was getting nowhere. I asked him why would I ever want to shop at pet co again if their prices are more expensive and it is such a pain to get a price adjustment, he replied "convenience... because it takes awhile to drive up the grade to Thousand Oaks". I have not been back since and I disparage that place all the time. read more

Just left this location. Your employee, Shirley, is fantastic! I had my infant son with me and she went out of her way to help me. She personally showed me where the exact brand of dog food I was looking for was. Then, without me asking, she loaded 2 of the huge bags into my cart---and when the third didn't fit, she carried it to the front checkout. She rung me up, carried the third bag to my car and loaded all three bags in my car. What a sweetheart!!! Thank you Shirley!!!! You have no idea the difference you made for me tonight. You're better off heading up the grade to Pet Smart in Newbury Park. I say this for two main reasons: 1) Petco Camarillo Grooming - The turnover with their groomers is very frequent. They once hired a woman who gave my dog a hair cut with several nicks and red marks on his belly. That same groomer placed my dog on the narrow front counter and dropped him onto the floor. Petco's grooming area is pretty dirty and there is animal hair everywhere. If you want to stay local in Camarillo, I suggest you go to CC and Ida's off of Santa Rosa. It's a privately owned grooming salon with cheaper prices and their facility is much cleaner. What's also nice is that they let the dogs mingle with each other as opposed to leaving your dog in a cage until you pick it up. Surprisingly, all the dogs regardless of size differences, are very mellow and get along great. 2) Apparently Petco price matches, so says their huge sign at the front of the store, just above the register. Good luck though. They apparently have to call the store that you're trying to get the price match against to validate the UPC numbers match. Petco was selling the 35 lb bag of dog food I wanted for $53.99 and Pet Smart is consistently $10 cheaper. Petco's UPC number didn't match with Pet Smart and so they didn't give me the cheaper price. It turns out Petco was selling older bags of dog food which referenced an older UPC code (UPC code was apparently changed 2 months prior to the time this review was written). A couple things wrong with this situation: 1) Petco management didn't have the smarts to ask Pet Smart why the UPC codes are different. 2) The dog food that Petco sells is obviously more expensive and much older. read more

Since we keep all dog food in an air tight container, we did not have the bag that it came . Without a bag, Petco was still able to honor a return, hassle free (we still had the receipt). I had gone to this store for over a year. Most of the employees over that time have been quite nice. Most still are. But as of late I have elected to stop going to this location due to the regular behavior of the store leader Phil. I have not had any direct interaction with Phil but the way I have seen and heard him address his employees is utterly unprofessional. Leadership training would help him significantly and until something to that degree happens I will be shopping at other pet stores. read more
