This is a review of their grooming. We came in somewhat randomly to check out a jacket for our dog and I thought while here might as well see if we can sneak in his nail trim. Previously, our dog was super easy to have his nails trimmed and has had it done by multiple people without out even the slightest issue. However, I don't know what happened, but at Petco, they were unable to trim his nails- he tried to bite them, pooped, and screamed. I thought maybe they had a weird approach or something, but now our dog won't let anyone trim his nails. read more

I hate writing bad reviews but sometimes it needs to be said in hopes that things will change. This is the closest pet store to me so I often come here for my pets needs but the past few times it's been a disaster. I've gone on different days and at different times but the experience is still the same. Multiple times I've gone in and noticed dog urine and feces on the floor from people bringing their dogs in and when you try to locate an employee to let them know, they're nowhere to be found. Unfortunately some people don't notice and step right into it and spread it further. I have two cats and I used to give them the Petco brand of wet food but they never seemed to have it in stock and I hate changing my cats food on a whim because it upsets their stomach and causes even more issues. The lack of food has caused me to just stop giving them wet food all together which made them sad but they make due now. I know that staffing is an issue everywhere, I'm not exactly mad about that but when there's no employees at all on the floor, not even at the register, that's a little strange. I hope this store gets itself under control because judging from these negative reviews, I'm not the only one who feels this way. read more

I have never written a review for any business before but when I looked at the state of the animals at this petco I had to worn others to not support this animal abuse! The first awful thing I saw when I walked into this establishment was when I was greeted with what looked to be a three by one ft tank for the mice, and guinea pigs, if the guinea pigs were to have the butt to the back of the tank and their face to the front of the tank the width would measure to the length of their bodies, the mice tanks were more than abusive, the male mice tanks had over thirty mice and there was blood on quite a few of them, as well as blood on the walls and glass of the tanks, in the females and male mice tanks their was feces in the food bowls and all over the tanks and on top of the water cans, the reptile tanks were over populated and most of their water bowls had dead crickets and dirt in them and some of them had no water at all, the temps in the beared dragons tanks were way to low and the humidity was to high as well, the fish were not that bad for a petco but in a couple of the tanks they had two-five dead fish and quite a lot of feces as well. I talked with one of the workers about the situation and he said that the tanks were cleaned every day, which seemed highly unlikely, he also said that the tank size for the beardies was a whopping 20 gallons which is two small for a baby let alone two fully grown ones. I am writing this review to hopefully open people's eyes and show them that petco abuses their animals and does not care for the wellbeing of any of their animals they care about profit! read more

Meh. Was hoping for a better experience when I took my pup for grooming today. We made the appointment online just last night and there were many slots available for this morning, so I was impressed. However, I was asked to bring in proof of rabies vaccination, which was odd since we did it through Petco's Vital Care program...but I brought it anyway. When I got to the store, I asked the person at the register if I should go through the door marked grooming (I asked because I could clearly see that there was no one at the reception desk in the grooming area) and the associate said, "Yea" in a tone that implied it should be obvious to me. I went inside and no one was there in the main area. I could see two doors leading to a grooming area and kennel area, and could hear something from the back. I called out, "Hello" several times and no one came out. I continued to wait until finally deciding to go back to the less-than-friendly associate at the register, who was once again, not eager to help me. She said that there was only one person working (which seemed odd given the many available options for appointments) and I shared with her that I was on a time crunch (I had already been waiting ten minutes), which didn't seem to matter to her. When I walked back in, the groomer finally came out from the back (taking out her AirPods, which I guess explains why she didn't hear me shouting "Hello") saying that she'd be right with me (which, of course, she wasn't). As I waited for the groomer, I scanned the room. There was hair everywhere - clumps of it on the tables and even pieces on the desk and keyboard. The unfriendly associate from the register came in to check on me and said she'd speak to the groomer. When I said the groomer had finally acknowledged my presence, she seemed annoyed that I had "bothered" her for help, repeatedly saying that it wasn't her fault or problem - news flash, if you work somewhere customer-facing, then customer service is indeed your problem! The groomer came out - didn't wash her hands and started typing away on the dirty keyboard. She had a lot of questions for me, which was frustrating because I was already running late to my next appointment (and because everything should have been already communicated via VitalCare!). After expressing my frustration and needing to confirm pricing that I was quoted online, she just kept saying "I'm trying my best, I'm the only one here", but I fail to understand how your staffing issue is my problem - especially when there is no apologies, no explanation ahead of time that they're running behind because they're understaffed (my guess is that this is their normal staffing situation), and no sense of urgency. Still, my baby needed a grooming. So after a 20 minute ordeal, I was able to drop him off with a window of 3-hours. They called me around 2-hours and was able to pick him up. He had a few nicks on him, but smelled cleaned and was groomed to my liking. The associate this time around was at least friendly, but still seemed confused about the grooming discounts and vital care coupons, something I have noticed at many of the Petco locations. For $80 (including a $15 tip that I wasn't thrilled to give) I expect a better experience. Because I have Vital Care, I'll be trying out another Petco location for grooming in a few months. Ended up being even more at the time of payment. Our dog is a sweet quiet little schnoodle and they kept her there for 6 hours... she was anxious and restless when she came home and could not sleep, something out of the ordinary for her. We decided to adopt a dog and he was in Costa Mesa. Unfortunately, we were in Northern California and had no dog supplies at all! So an hour before we went to go pick up our dog, we stopped at Petco. Now I've been to quite a few of their locations. This one was exemplary. The reason? Ray. Wow, what an sales associate! He told us what we needed, gave us fantastic advice, helped us out with some coupons, and answer in our every question. Truthfully he went above and beyond. Wow!!! Very happy with the grooming at this location. I had the pleasure of having Aidan as the groomer. Overall I had a wonderful experience from the moment I walked in for drop off, everyone was so friendly and welcoming. My dog Bella was a little anxious and they were very sweet with how they handled her and made sure she didn't feel overwhelmed. The staff was also very receptive to my special requests on how I wanted to modify Bellas "Schnauzer cut" and Aidan delivered the cut exactly how I wanted. It is very apparent that all the staff genuinely enjoys dogs and are very patient and caring with them. I will definitely be bringing Bella back here regularly to Aidan for all her future haircuts. read more

I worked here before breaking my legs and damaging my hips from getting hit by a car while on the sidewalk. I wanted to return after I regained the ability to walk. Petco wouldn't take me back but yet, this store has too few employees and customers are rarely treated right. So petco, do you really care about the community or not? Someone who actually loved their job is rejected but you hire people who don't care....and look at the state of this store. Dog piss on the ground, cashiers who aren't around when needed. Boxes left unpacked.....and yes, animals have died in this store from neglect. I know because one of them died shortly before I was hit. Excellent experience at Petco was the best pet store I have ever been to since moving here to Newport Beach in California. Earlier in the day I've gone to healthy spot to try to pick up some dog food and the agent at Healthy Spot belittled me and made me feel like a dumb ass since I didn't know the exact ingredients inside the blue dog food for my dog. They didn't carry that type of dog food there and she suggested for me to stick with the same type of dog food so that way I didn't give them any stomach issues and I let her know hey there's no blue dog food here at Healthy Spot so we're going to go on across the street to Petco and pick up the same type of dog food that he normally gets. After leaving the very tense and uncomfortable environment at Healthy Spot we landed at Petco and what an amazing experience. There were lots of selection there for dog food and there was even puppies and kittens there for adoption that you could go and pet and give love to. Wow wow wow that totally turned my whole day around and we ended up getting the dog food that we had initially wanted and had a great experience at Petco. I will only shop at Petco from now on and moving forward thank you very much for being there for me and also give you my niece and nephew had a great experience as we love seeing the puppies there. read more

The fish department at this Petco needs to step their game up and hire people that actually care about their field of work. I was buying a Betta fish and what I thought was a tank filter, I got home and tried to set up the filter and realized it wasn't what I needed. I returned the filter and then the fish department told me I didn't need a filter and that betta are super strong and can adapt to their environments. My fish died the next morning. Only reason I'm giving an extra star is because it's partially my fault for not doing research but call me crazy for thinking the fish department would be able to show me the ropes. read more

Upon realizing that the merchandise wouldn't work for her, tried to return it only to have the store employee tell me that Petco does not take returns due to COVID. When I said that I've never heard of such a thing, he proceeded to explain what COVID was to me. I mean, that's next level condescension so, bravo. I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars shopping at various stores over the course of the past year, and have needed to return some merchandise for one reason or another, and have never in my life had any problem at all. I guess that's the difference between shopping at an upscale store like Centinela vs. the equivalent of a pet-themed big-box warehouse store. This is clearly a bullshit policy put in place to reduce the loss of revenue under the guise of COVID as there's no practical benefit of such a ridiculous policy. It goes without saying that I would rather drive a 1989 Ford Fiesta uphill with bald tires and a trunk of bricks, during a snowstorm than ever shop at Petco again. We walked in and 4 employees were up front and as we walked in they said " awww shit, we should have locked the doors already ." And another " Make the announcement already" like really? There's too much to explain but will give Highlights what I experienced- Poor communication and not hospitable with grooming department. Store it self was not well stock, unopened boxes pretty much in areas of the store, from front to back. Floors were full of urine stain all over floor and corners in the aisle. Imagine of the ventilation is off.... the entire store would reek. There's just so much to tell. No shopping carts and not well organized and not sure if the staff really care..... I dislike Petco based on how they care for their small animals-with with neglect and ignorance. Please do not purchase exotic animals from here! They should not be allowed to mistreat skinny guinea pigs who are freezing in cages shaking without warm fleeces, which is required for them, and alone without a friend. Full-size guinea pigs should not be confined to a small enclosure of 6 inches wide and 24" in length with no hay, which makes Up to 90% of their dietary needs. They had three full-size guineas in this small glass case with no hay. On each visit here, I've spoken with managers about the care of these animals, and clearly, they have no respect for animals. Pet smart has large cages and houses their guineas well. I highly suggest you purchase your guineas at a rescue! Bunny Bunch in Huntington Beach, or visit LA Guinea Pig Rescue for valuable information on the care of these sweet social animals who need "space!!" Hay and love. I want Petco to STOP selling chinchillas and Guinea Pigs! They're not experts in these exotics and give the wrong information on proper care! read more

I came here to get some cat litter that was on sale on petco.com. The sign on the shelf reflected the same discount, so I was surprised when I was charged full price at the register. It turns out that in the store, only a specific type of cat litter was discounted. All of the litter from the same manufacturer was discounted online. It was pretty annoying to have wasted a trip. What really bothered me though, was seeing that Petco sells birds. That makes them no better than pet stores selling dogs and cats, and we all know that real animal lovers adopt their pets instead of buying them from stores that mistreat them and perpetuate breeding. There was a lot of poop left in the reptile tanks. Especially in the drinking water. It was way more than one days worth. The pre-packaged feeder insects were mostly dead. I feel like the ones still alive will probably die terribly of dehydration. Both of these observations made me tear up. I'm not sure how much control the employees have over the excess inventory of feeders or the possibility of releasing the almost dead ones to their reptiles (for a quicker death). The leopard geckos are supposed to be solitary and there were all huddling together for warmth. While I don't think they have much control over some of these things (corporate), the excessive poop definitely is controllable. That is what the rating is truly for. read more

I will never go here again. 1) Not one employee in the store was wearing their face mask correctly after 8 months of COVID - either under the nose, under the chin, or a gaiter. 2) Horrible customer service. My son and I were passed off to several different employees because no one knew anything about basic bird products we were looking for or needed and gave us terrible advice. 3) The whole place just feels dirty and depressing.
