There was a lot of poop left in the reptile tanks. Especially in the drinking water. It was way more than one days worth. The pre-packaged feeder insects were mostly dead. I feel like the ones still alive will probably die terribly of dehydration. Both of these observations made me tear up. I'm not sure how much control the employees have over the excess inventory of feeders or the possibility of releasing the almost dead ones to their reptiles (for a quicker death). The leopard geckos are supposed to be solitary and there were all huddling together for warmth. While I don't think they have much control over some of these things (corporate), the excessive poop definitely is controllable. That is what the rating is truly for. read more

Worst grooming ever with Jaret. He asked what we wanted for our long haired dog. We asked to keep certain parts of his fur like his lions mane and tail- we also wanted his fur to stay long but just be cleaned up. He freaking shaved my dog and not even well. He has bald spots and random strips of fur. My dog looks so ridiculous. Then, they charge us more than what we even booked. And, didn't even do the other services I booked. They wouldn't let my husband see our dog before paying our bill and providing a tip. I'm just livid. Will never be going here again and do not recommend. We could not have more clearly expressed what we wanted, and for them to screw up so horribly, must have been on purpose. The store did give us a refund. But, we didn't talk again with the groomer. My dog has a ton of anxiety and grooming is not her favorite past time... With that being said, the ladies in the grooming department this morning really took care of my Luna. She came home happy to show me her fresh cut nails and smelling great. She also has skin allergies and Petco provided options to soothe her skin with additional shampoo options. I took my dog for a bath. I am told that my dog is not letting his nails to be filed. I asked if they have cones or gloves, the lady said that they have a rule not to take care of nails if dog shows sign of aggression and they have cones and gloves. They are not permitted to use them. I am paying for bath, ear cleaning and nails filing. I received for my dog, a bath. I picked him up and he was still wet. This situation never happen before at Petco in other locations. They alway filed his nails. I lost my trust with Petco in this location. read more

Here is a cute little picture of bulleit learning a new trick. All tricks aside. We have been working on his separation anxiety, leash aggression, and actions toward kids and strangers. He had private training when he was 6months old and in involved the use of shock collars. I was made to believe that they would help his anxiety. Flash forward he is now 5yrs old and while he's mostly a happy dog, I can tell he's anxious dog. We went through a bit of a traumatic event recently which brought us to Costa Mesa, and he's been overprotective since then. When he bit the maintenance man was when I decided to enroll him in some training classes. I needed to learn how to read him bettter and create a more stable environment for him. I've been working with Melissa over at Petco in CM. It's amazing to see the confidence that my little guy is gaining and the trust that I'm gaining in him. We've ditched the shock collars and pinch collars and have been working with only positive reinforcement. I'm so incredibly grateful to be able to see the world from Bulleit's perspective and create a better environment for him. It's also helped me to not be as anxious when he's around children. If any of you live near by and need some one on one doggie training, Melissa is fantastic! She has 20 yrs of experience and is so loving with your animal. I usually enjoy coming into this location as the staff is incredibly helpful and personable, however the past few trips I've made I've had to deal with one of their managers, Ryan. Everytime I see him he looks incredibly irritated, is very short with me and is never very helpful. Today's trip, he was in the process of cleaning their birds and seemed incredibly agitated he had to take care of animals at a pet store. Go figure. I needed help finding Wellness dog treats and he actually ignored me and walked away while looking frustrated and muttering to himself. DO NOT GO HERE!!!! POSSIBLE ANIMAL ABUSE AND NEGLIGENCE...Resulting in pet's death! My dear friend brought her healthy, shy and quiet 3 year old female cat to this Petco to be shaved and bathed on Thursday, June 16th, 2016 and ever since she brought her home she was slowly dying. She had been shaved several times before, at another groomer with no problem... Usually at least twice a year and seemed happier than ever when she got home. Not Thursday when picking up from Petco though; she seemed like she was in pain. She seemed to cry in pain or discomfort when she got home, something completely out of the ordinary for her. She's an indoor cat and only three years old!!! She has NEVER had any physical trauma or injuries. My friend took her fur baby to an animal hospital on 6/18 and they didn't find anything in blood work but she was freezing and shutting down. Her sweet cat Pink died early morning on June19th, 2016. I'm horrified, sad, angry and want to make sure that this does not happen to anyone else or any other pet. Please think twice about using this establishment! read more

Today I was running into petco to grab some food like i have for YEARS. I almost always go to jamba juice a few doors down, then head over to petco for shopping. Today, I got out of my car after parking in front of the store and started heading to jamba juice. A security man came up to me and got uncomfortably in my face about how I am not allowed to park there because petco is losing customers because of people like me who are filling their parking spots and shopping elsewhere in the mall. I kindly told him that I was grabbing jamba juice and then going to petco.. but I wanted to park by petco since that was my last destination. He didn't believe me and pointed to a sign telling me the parking was to be used for people who are shopping in stores. I have proof of TWO stores i went to.. jamba juice and petco... Im sure petco was the one who had this security man tell customers.. but he should have asked me where I was going before he was uncomfortably in my face yelling at me... The pet grooming center - MISERABLE! We dropped our pooch off for a shampoo and trim. Picked her up and she was terrified and shaking (not normal for her), glands were not popped, her teeth were not brushed, her little toe nails had been clipped to the quick on one foot and she was also COVERED in hair clippings. Evidently they shampooed and then cut her hair and didn't bother to brush her out - my daughter and the dog were both covered in hair when they got home! I was sooooooooooo mad - they are over priced for the service, slow, and the groomers were not caring, loving, tender, or concerned what-so-ever with her well being! We switched to PetSmart by Michael's on 17th and have found them to be excellent, patient and friendly with our fur babies!!!!!!!!!!! The fish might be great, but the groomers are FAR from it - the groomers were about as gentle as pit bull fight promoters! Horrible! read more

NEVER EVER EVER take your pet to their grooming center. My poor dog was completely mortified after I took her here to get her nails trimmed and grinded. The staff is a bunch of kids who don't seem to even like animals, and have no idea what they are doing. When I came in the grooming center was clean and the girl who helped me - although very flustered, was very nice. So I left my dog and they said she'd be done in 15 minutes. When I came back the whole area was covered in hair trimmings and there were 6 dogs whimpering and barking simultaneously and the staff just did not care at all. When I got my dog back her nails were cut but not grinded. I didn't notice until I got home and she jumped on me and scratched my entire leg. Overall, this place is terrible, I'm going to a professional place specifically for grooming no more petco/petsmart centers!! read more

All in all this is just another Petco, just like the last 5 you passed with the same selection. The reason I feel compelled to write this review is for one of the employees that works out of the Costa Mesa location. I met this gentleman about 2 month ago while looking for items to set up my first fish tank. I didn't know the first thing about getting started. Fast forward 2 months and I have a completely self sustaining ecosystem, which requires almost zero maintenance minus the weekly 20% water change. He turned me on to live plants, correct lighting, aeration, co2 for plants, sand substrate for the roots, and correct fish to maintain my aquarium, plus countless other conversation of picking his brain for information. I have water quality second to none and each week my water test proves it. Also, he has helped me with info in treating my 2 Florida soft shell turtles for tapeworm, helped me identify a upper respiratory infection in my pet rat and suggested changing bedding which solved the problem, has recommended the citronella bark collar for our huskies over the shock collar, which has worked, and a more humane solution to our problem. All of our animals have benefitted from walking into this petco and meeting Marco. He is above and beyond the norm for these chain pet store employees and has a vast knowledge of everything scaly, slimy and furry. Petco made a very business savvy decision in hiring him and I hope they do whatever it takes to keep him under their employment. So if you visit this location for anything pet related, especially fish, ask for Marco. read more

Ryan was knowledgeable, Friendly and had no problem taking a little extra time to explain to me how to use a harness for my dog that was harder for me to use than Ap Calculus. Customer service like that is extremely rare now and its because of employees like Ryan that will continue making me a loyal Petco Shopper, Once I knew what I needed I was personally assisted by Amber another Amazing employee who made me feel like a valued and important customer, she took the time to show me the different types of harnesses and gentle leaders and patiently explained to me what my best options and why It was the best option instead of just throwing the first most expensive item at me and told HERE! GO TO PETSMART INSTEAD!! I came here on 12/16/2010 to buy a bunch of goodies for my dog and the new dog I will be getting. I was searching through the leashes and collars, the area was very unorganized and low on product. I picked out collars, leashes, harnesses, treats, toys, food and I.D. tags. I spent $125. I was hesitant about the collars and harnesses. I returned the collars, one leash, toys and harnesses. The checker was very nice, but the manager that did my return had a bad attitude and seemed bothered that I was returning stuff, at the end saying, "WHAT'S WRONG???". Bad customer service. That's why I took by business to the organized PetSmart in Costa Mesa, they are very organized, and carry the style of harnesses and collars I was looking for. read more

I hate to see that this Petco location receive such a low yelp rating. We don't get our dogs groomed there but this seems to be their problem area. Based on our own experience with groomers and hair stylists for ourselves, consistency in any hair based business is difficult. The manager there is really awesome and always is more than willing to order food if they are out-of-stock and call when it arrives or at least give a reliable eta on when to expect it in. There is a really nice lady on the register that takes really good care of the regulars and really takes pride in her work and customer service. If you use your club card you get 5% back which lowers their prices to beat Petsmart up the street. Although we personally have never had an issue in the parking lot, it does seem a bit sketchy there around dusk. This is probably because of all the people who have hung out at the park relocating for the evening. read more

So I came in to this Petco with a friend to buy some fish. First, let me describe the man that was helping me. Seemed nice until he spoke, had the most disgusting pubic-like facial hair I've ever seen, and dirty long and inappropriate for the work place hair (I guess that's why he works at petco). First he tried to balance helping me at the same time that he helped another customer. I understand being understaffed, I don't understand trying to split your work among customers at the same time. Then whenever I had questions he came back with sassy answers, I don't know if he was trying to make me feel stupid or what, Sorry I'm not a south american fish expert. I then made the mistake of telling him that these fish were going to be my dorm pets. To which he made comments about how I probably get "plastered" every day, let alone have a 5 gallon tank. I don't know, but I think that's a tad inappropriate and offensive to say to a customer. I then made the mistake of telling him that I didnt have my tank set up yet, and that I didn't have a aerator, which launched him into a speech about how I was going to kill these $1 fish because I wasn't appropriately taking care of them. I should of at that point just walked away before he tried to force me to buy more chemicals and bullshit food I didn't need. Just to let you know. My three fish are living in a flower vase and are all still alive and well. So F*ck you mr. petco, you're an a hole. GO TO PETSMART read more

For some reason I realize that my cat has no food only hours before I'm supposed to feed him in the morning, probably because I suck at having pets. Either way, I find myself driving towards Petco at 8:45 in the morning (I'm actually just about to leave now) and they're always there, ready to open on time, which is really helpful. A few of the employees are really cool, especially the manager, but there are a few people that work there that seem a bit pushy to me. I hate signing up for weird cards so please don't push your "Pals" card on me, please? Anyways, for a big corporate chain, Petco is pretty much what you'd expect. They have a lot of different items for a pretty decent price and you'd be hard pressed to find that they don't have things you're looking for. However, for some reason, they were out of the food that my cat likes for almost 2 weeks and it was pretty inconvenient for me. I took two stars for some of the staff and just the general "so-so" vibe there. You get what you need and you go, nothing special and nothing more. If you're looking specifically for fish, I would definitely come here though, they have a guy that works in the fish department (I've named him "Brandon Grylls") that is really helpful and knows his fish. read more

Worst customer service ever. All of their fish price tags are all over the place, not just that but a lot of their fish were dead. I was being over charged for fish. I even showed them the difference between the red and the yellow and still wanted me to pay 8.99 for 4!!! baby yellow tiger barb fish. Even tho the online shows the sku # and the price. On top of that took 20 mins the get help... Not even Tropical Fish stores sell these yellow tiger barb fish at that price. This place is a rip off and the employees have no idea what they are looking at... worst place to come to buy fish. Brought Chloe here on Sunday morning to see Francis for a summer cut and groom. Petco has so many options for your dog... including a blueberry facial. I stuck with the basic nails, glands, haircut. She is a medium size dog at 25 pounds. Price was pretty standard at $52.00. Her haircut came out great and she looks like a little puppy again. Would definitely bring her back. It is really hard to get an appointment with groomers in Newport area, so I was super happy to get an early appt on Sunday morning. read more

Just came in to get a tank/food for our gold fish we won at the fair. The woman helping us was super sweet but once we started checking out the boy told us if we bought the tank we were buying our fish would die because they grow to one to two FEET. Um I'm sorry but I've bought plenty of fish in my life time and a simple gold fish doesn't need a multiple gallon tank. I asked him why his beta were in tiny quart sized tank half dead and he said because they would soon be sold. I love animals and think fish should have a great life but please don't try to upsell me to a 20 gallon tank for my two tiny gold fish. And don't guilt trip me to make me feel bad. I had a very dissapointing day today at Petco. I brought my 2 poodles today. For bath and grooming. The girl that handled me and my dogs today, just by looking at them determined that she does not feel comfortable dealing with my dogs, due to their age. Stated that she needed a vet note stating that they are well. I told her that when i made the appt , they did not asked for this in anticipation. Then she proceeded to say that one of my dogs is malnourished. I asked her to check her records, my dog's weight is the same, she said she feels the ribcage of my dog, i asked her to check my dog's records and they should have notes that this is the anatomy of my little poodle since i got her from the shelter 16 yrs ago. She said, that they have no notes. I have been going to this place more than 10 yrs. I told her i don't have any problem getting a note from the vet but i should have been asked for this note before. And then she said my other dog has mats as well as the first dog and he is old, i told her yes, he is 19yrs old, i told her that is the reason i bring them to get taken care of. I felt like the technician just made a whole bunch of assumptions about my dogs and did not want to deal with them today and kept saying she doesn't feel comfortable grooming them. Then she call the manager to back her up and i told the manager, shame on Petco for not having record of my dog's appereance and condition and shame on the tech for saying my dog is underweight without having a baseline info. Just assuming. They just don't have any idea on how hard is to bring my 2 poodles to Petco, then bring them back home with no grooming. My dogs are too old to be going through this. I asked for the usual person that takes care of them, but they said she is no longer there. I just feel like they should have someone with more compassion, who does not make assumptions about my dogs and my care for them and who did not feel comfortable from the moment they saw them without any justification just assumptions. Wanted to come here to get fish and start an aquarium and there were so so many dead fish. Such beautiful creatures and it seemed like there was some sort of parasite that infected all the tanks and they just left them floating there.
