It disgusts me that this place has 3.8 stars. Why are there no pictures of the reptiles and small mammals? Because there is no dark comforting place for them to sleep, and because literally all of them are way underfed and fight each other. The crickets keep me up at night after I buy them for my healthy lizard I bought at PETS TO GO and they are so loud!!! They don't care about the animals health or comfort they just want you to see them no matter what they are doing, they never get privacy and they just want toddlers to beg their mom for one so they can get rid of it and add another! Owner/CEO don't even reply to this there is nothing you can say to fix it or make it better. I love the convenience of having this petco in this location. Although this location is much smaller than the one on laguna blvd, I like the customer service here a lot more. My experience at the other location wasn't too great. When entering this store, you always get a greeting at the door. They are always quick and efficient at check out. This store is always clean and organized. They even have dog training available at this location. I always come here to pick up dog ice cream for my 3 boys. It's a little expensive but the heart wants what it wants. Haha! My boys deserve the best! read more

This is a tiny store. It does not have pets! Only rating it three stars vs five because of lack of products. We came looking for fishes and there was none. Otherwise, the staff are welcoming. I came in here looking for higher calorie supplements or food for my cat who has been having a hard time with food since she just got out of surgery. This nice lady helped me the moment I got in and was extremely informative. She gave me suggestions for healthy high calorie food for my cats and even considered texture and gave me supplement options. She was very nice and informative and helped me go through the options that are good for cats in recovery. For the person that helped me I'd like to let you know I instantly made a mixture of the things I got and she finally ate on her own. We took our puppy Winston here to get his second round of shots and the entire team was SO helpful and kind! The employees here (special shoutout to Jaq and Sarah) were very knowledgeable and helped recommend some awesome things for our dog. I highly recommend getting your dog vaccinated here & browsing around after. I saw them helping another family find some stuff as well- it's so nice to see employees engaging with customers in such a helpful and supportive way. This is one of those mini petco locations, definitely doesn't have as much stock as the larger box stores but I find myself coming here quite often compared to the larger store on Laguna. The nice thing about this location is that it generally less busy and a quick way to get those small emergency items for your high maintenance animal. Even with the small size, they still host classes here (I have attended any of them but have seen them set up) and they have all the basics you need to keep your animals alive. One thing to note is that they don't have cats or other pets for adoption, this can be a negative or a positive depending on if you are prone to picking up cats for adoption. In this case it's a positive as I've hit my cat allotment for the year. The staff has been warm and friendly and about the only thing I've had an issue is sometimes parking can fill up but it shares a lot with quite a few stores so it's bound to happen. read more

I have been taking my Pug to Petco for grooming the past 4 years, and the past 3 here in Elk Grove.  Initially, I wasn't happy with how my dog was treated, or how they treated me.  I kept going and changing groomers until I found the perfect one, Ariel.  For the past 2 years, every 2 months we go in for grooming and things have been great, never a missed appointment, great service etc. Then about 3 months ago, I brought my dog in for their grooming appointment the employee said I missed an appointment. I explained that is incorrect as my appointment was today. When the employee looked into the confusion, they found that they apparently had made a change to my appointment and never notified me.  Twice they called to reschedule, all the while customer service was back to where we started...rude, and unprofessional. This last appointment I was told Ariel is not available and had to choose another groomer and a new time/day. Typically for my grooming appointments knowing the traffic down Laguna and Elk Grove Blvd, I leave 10/15 minutes early. I arrived 15 minutes before my appointment, which is typical if there are no traffic issues.  Past practice is if the groomer is busy, she calls someone over to check in my dog or they will stop and check us in and place my dog in a cage until she's ready. Upon arrival I was waiting at the check in desk and the groomer was grooming another dog. She looked over and saw me, I saw her reach and grab her phone and text someone; shortly after another employee walked up, passed me and they chatted in the grooming room. The second employee then walks out and says, "Your appointment is at 10, correct?" To which I said, "Yes," and they walked away saying nothing else or acknowledging my response.  At this point it is 11 minutes to 10 and I've been standing there for 4 minutes.  I stood waiting for another 4 minutes when the manager walked past me (no acknowledgement) and went in to talk with the groomer.  Finally, I turned to the second employee who is now at the cash register and is just standing there doing nothing and said, "Is anyone going to check me in?"  This is after 8 minutes of standing there while each of them passed me with no acknowledgment.  Her response, "Your appointment is at 10, right?! That is what you said?!!" My response, "10 minutes is early is better rather than 10 minutes late, right?" I have reached the final straw of how they treat their customers, I walked out and told her to cancel my appointment! I have two spoiled dogs, that get groomed, outfits, leashes, collars, and lots of food and treats all of which are purchased at this location. I'm certain I've spent a few thousand over the years and I will never spend another penny at this store!  All this could have been prevented by a simple "Looks like you are early, unfortunately, we cannot take her in until the exact appointment time." Or something to that effect, but to walk by us as if we were not standing there and treated this way by all three employees (one of which is MANAGEMENT), this obviously is an acceptable practice of theirs. read more

It's not my normal store, but a friend of mine is an elderly senior who is hesitant to travel from the coronavirus outbreak and asked me if I would go instead to get some supplements for her sick dog. It's very much like the regular Petco Stores but has more of a boutique feel. The staff was courteous and helpful. I was approached while filling up a bag of treats for my boy. It's only $3.99lb and they look and smell a lot more gourmet than the usual treats you find in bins. She suggested I smell the ginger snaps cookies because they smell just like the real thing. Mmmm...I told her I'd be tasting one later when I got home to which she assured me all the ingredients are safe. Call me weird but I do like to taste some of my boy's treats before I give them to him. Quality control! Yes, I'm a freak. The friendly clerk told me it would take a lot to fill one pound. She was right. They even have a little sitting area for pets and their parents. Nice. read more

I am so disappointed in the service we've received from the employees at this Petco. Tonight, we were denied purchasing food for our 3 cats for NO REASON! The employees stated that they could not accept a $100 bill. No where on the business does it state that they cannot accept large bills. Our purchase was over $25. All they had to do was give us $75 or even less in change. On their website and receipt, it says they do accept CASH. The "manager" Lauren, was no help at all. Customer service clearly doesn't mean anything to her or the team members with her this evening. Never have I received this horrible of service at this store, and I go here often. My babies are on a strict Whole Hearted diet, I cannot buy the food anywhere except Petco. I've called corporate, so hopefully the real manager can justify the employees behavior. Now that Hollywood Video has been closed for so long, it's great to finally see a different kind of store occupying that space. A pet store! I've been to PETCO plenty of times, but never to an Unleashed location. This is pretty much equivalent to a PETCO store, but in a smaller package. They have something for every kind of pet: fish, bird, small animal, dogs, cats. Of course they don't have room for fishtanks or anything like that found in bigger pet stores, but they do offer supplies. It's a cute little shop that can serve as an emergency shop for those pet owners who may run out of dog food or need a new pet bed or dog collar. They even have a cute little corner for dog portraits and a little display case filled with baked doggie treats (some even looked good enough for me to eat!). I really hope that this place stays open because it's a convenient location for those people who need to do some grocery shopping in that shopping center as well as pick up some pet supplies. It's got all the necessities, but I always feel like I can't get my exact item. Specifically, I always come in for the Canidae kibble in Bison, which I actually started feeding my furbaby on an employee's recommendation. I used to buy medium bags and they were always out. So then I've been going for the large bags and then those were out. I think this is in part to it just being a smaller store, so it's kind of expected. Despite that, the staff wins me over every time. They're always super friendly and helpful the second I step into the store. On top of that, every time I haven't been able to get the exact item I need, they'll give me a little discount. This is particularly nice since I'm buying something other than what I came in for. I come here every single month for the past 2 years to get dog food. The hours have changed back and forth for the past two years the ONE time I'm on my way here and my pick up order is ready I call the store and talked to someone and told them that I will be there in 5 mins prior to them closing if they can have my order ready I can grab and go I get there at 7:03 no one is upfront understandable. Then I proceed to wait for my order at wingstop and there come two women out of the store and I asked them I called in and told them I'll be there and they said it's fine and they are like no we are closed we are closed then why did you verbally advise me it was fine my dogs don't have food and she's like we are closed too bad come tomorrow. I'm just very upset with this and how rude she was I showed them my phone where I called ahead of time and asked. The person who was speaking to me I understand was pretty straightforward with no empathy and the girl next to her was just laughing. These new people they hire have no respect and it just angered me so much. I've done my business with you guys for so long and even calling ahead I was told it was fine. I WILL NEVER SHOP AT THIS PLACE...EVER! Here's why! On a cold and wet Sunday evening (4:34pm), I needed to go buy food for my 7 month old puppy, so I decided to try the new Unleashed by Petco store just minutes from my house. I usually go to the Petsmart in Elk Grove to buy all of my pet food and toys, plus our puppy is signed up for training there; however I thought I save time and try Unleased. My wife had a bad experience the first (and last) time she went to Unleashed and told me not to go...but I went anyway. I had to try the place for myself, right? So I walk up to the store, there was no one shopping inside, and I was immediately greeted by the chick at the front. I mean not even seconds after the doors open and my foot crosses the treshold, is this chick greeting me...not really my thing. Let me at least walk into the store completely before you are ready to direct me...geez. I ask if they have any (name brand) dog food and was told "we only carry premium foods, but I can help/show you how switch to new foods". Sorry you freckled face goblin...I need dog food. So I told her that it was okay and that I would try Petsmart, she said "oh, you Petsdumb!" Wait...so rude and unprofessional. I understand that Petsmart is a competitor of Petco, but please...don't take it out on me...you didn't have WHAT I needed...so YES, I am going to Petsmart...because at least they are 'SMART" enough to carry a name brand food that many use. Look, I know these are just reviews and my little incident may not persuade you to stop shopping or supporting Unleashed, but I refuse to spend money at a place filled with people who are unprofessional. Let me start off by saying that the design of this place on the inside is so cute. They even have a water fountain for your parched pup or cat to the left side of the store. I really think that they try to make their store unique by having cute, little treats and a chalkboard up with information on it. The big downside to this place is that it's EXPENSIVE. They do have unique toys, but I could buy them on amazon for $10 less. Their leashes and collars are more than what they need to be. I just think it's expensive because it's patterns and designs. The customer service is on the good side. There is always a worker who asks if I need any help finding anything or if I have any questions. I come here to buy my puppy sentry dewormer. He gotten infested with tapeworms and sentry fixed it! He pooped it all out by the end of the day and for only $13. read more

I was really excited when this store opened, in fact we went there on opening day. We shopped there for quite some time, but over time drifter back to PetSmart. At first, I wasn't sure why we did this, since Unleashed is so close to our house? Well, here are some reasons that come to mind: 1. They close early. I am a later in the day person. I tend to do shopping in the 8-10PM range. They close at 8, I have been told I couldn't shop when I showed up at 7:58, when I just wanted some dog food. Now, I have to go to another store. 2. The selection is limited. Yes, it is a boutique style store, and I always buy the same products, but sometimes I do look for other things or want to browse new products, and they may not have them. 3. The pricing is higher. Maybe its the boutique thing, but when I'm buying a $55 dollar bag of dog food (yes, we buy the premium stuff) I notice if the price increases everytime I'm purchasing. Bottomline, it's handy if you are short on time, but I feel like they could do more to get customers. For instance, they seem like a perfect location for grooming. They probably don't have the service, but I would consider them for grooming services. read more

Despite this being a smaller store, they always have what we needed. My girlfriend and I recently adopted a dog and we needed to get the essential supplies. Every time we stopped in to pick up what we needed we were assisted to the highest degree-- regardless of the staff! By far the worst staff I've ever encountered. Make sure you have exact change or they'll pushed you to buy more stuff, you probably don't need, or recommend going to Bel Air to get change which means leaving my pup in the car when it's 110 degrees. When my girlfriend returned some of the unnecessary items today, one of the clerks was talking about the training classes and after reviewing the transaction, she says, "oh and if I remember correctly your puppy could definitely use some training because he barked at another dog (because when a pitbull barks, its a sign of bad training and the pup not being socialized?)" While it's obviously not a large Petco, they carry all the basics, yet somehow they don't have the same brands as the Bigger store. The store is fun to be in. Although it is a chain, it has a small coffee shop feel. If Petco is like getting your cup of coffee at the grocery store, then Unleashed is like getting your premium drip coffee at Pete's. Before checking out the store, I had driven by Unleashed many times in my travels. I was curious. "Unleashed by Petco," the sign read... so I knew it was pet related... but how was it different from normal Petcos? To be honest, its not terribly different in the products they carry except that they only carry natural, organic, holistic and healthy items for pets (meaning you can find most of the items at Unleashed at a normal Petco). This is right up my alley. I am very picky about what I give my dog (insert annoying joke about me being a wacky, overly sensitive animal loving freak and/or how spoiled my dog is... I won't deny any of it!). The first thing I noticed when I walked in the door was a little doggy hanging out near the front of the store. The girl working immediately greeted me pleasantly and told me all about the store. She was incredibly helpful and obviously took a lot of pride in her job and in the store! Although I am a dog-only-lover, the store does offer pet supplies for many types of pets: fish, bird, small animal, dogs, cats. They don't carry live pets for sale either (which is fine with me!). What did I buy? I purchased two types of frozen yogurt for my puppy. The froyo helps to keep the dog cool in the summer. My doggy loved the apple cheddar froyo and scarfed it down pronto! I also bought 4 Pawsitively Organic baked doggie treats that look and smell good enough for humans to eat! I got my doggy some of these pretty treats at Christmas (but at Western Feed Supply). They are a little pricey at $2.29 per cookie. And although the sign read buy 3 get one free, I was charged for all 4. That always bugs me when stores screw up on this because I didn't catch it at the time because I was in a hurry, and now I have to drive all the way back if I want to get reimbursed for $2.29. Ug. Not sure its worth it. I also bought some treats from their cookie bar, a pet drying towel and some Happy Hip treats. They gave me a $5 of $25 purchase coupon too! They don't sell the deer antlers or x-long bully chews. And the natural dog food I buy for my pup isn't sold here. So, I will continue to shop at Western Feed Supply. But, like the previous reviewer said, it is a good place to go in a pinch. I hope Unleashed stays open. It is a fun, pet-friendly environment, with helpful and caring staff in a convenient location that feels much more intimate than Petco. I highly recommend you check it out... but check your receipt before you leave! :) read more

Staff here is very friendly and helpful! I bought my doggie treats and had to return them twice because she didn't like them. (Their return policy is you can return it within 30 days if you have the receipt even if you've opened the bag!) Multiple people from the staff helped me pick out treats that my dog would like based on what type of food she eats. Third time's a charm! I came in here to get my doggie some toys! Upon walking in, you can tell that the inventory is limited. However, this store had all of the essentials - dental bones, food, treats, toys, leashes, beds, medication, etc. The service here out of a lot of the pet stores I've been to was wonderful! Nicest Petco I've ever been to. The staff was unbelievably helpful and polite. When I was holding my giant bag of dog food and still looking around, one of the staff members came up to me and offered to take the bag to the front register for me while I continued shopping. I also spoke with her about how my dogs pull on the leash and she recommended a product to me that I didn't have a chance to buy that day, but I def will purchase in the future based on how well she said it works! This store is right around the corner from my house so it's super convenient. It's a small cute store that always has what I need. Staff is courteous and very helpful. Store is clean and things are easy to find. I like how they have a scale that you can weigh your furry baby :) If I need a big ticket item for my pup, I would probably go elsewhere, but this store is perfect for grabbing dog food or necessities when you don't have time (or the patience) to go to a club type store. read more

Not sure what supplies they have for other animals, but they have a lot of what you need for your doggies and kitties! A little on the pricier side though and I could find cheaper stuff at Target. Nevertheless, it's located conveniently in the same plaza as Bel Air and right next to Wingstop :). So might as well buy something for your cutie pets while waiting for your chicken wings! Haha. I always come here for pet needs for my kitty. I get the refillable jug of litter, purina or science diet dry food and other goods. I've also bought a cat harness/ leash, dental gel, and a pet brush. They are a convenient location and I always go there for whatever my cat might need. All the clerks will greet you when you come in the door and they always offer to fill my litter jug. They're all great, but Kelly is my favorite. She always makes sure I feel welcome and helped, she's really friendly and she always looks out for the customer. Got a call on the phone today that I was one of the winners in their openning weekend raffle. I asked what I won on the phone and the person on the phone said it could be a number of things. She asked if I had cats or dogs and I said cats. The person on the phone said I could pick up my prize anytime all week. When we had shopped at the store on the openning weekend and they had nice raffle items on display like a petbed, nice drinking fountain, etc. I stopped by the Petco Unleashed that same evening I got the call. I mentioned I was a raffle winner to a girl at the counter. She went back to see what they had left. The whole time the manager was yelling at the cashier to come back and ring up a customer, while she just stood their. The cashier came back and had to ring up the customer before she could help me so I had to wait patiently. I was then told all they had left was one little bag of litter. I told them my cats use a special brand of litter and I asked to speak to the manger. Waiting alot longer and the manger gave me a cheap bag filled with doggy treats and a t-shirt, great prize for a cat owner. I was much happier with the store before they told me I was a raffle winner. Not well thought out and not even enough appropriate prizes for all the people they called. I felt it was a gimmick just to get you back in the store. The prize didn't match what they had on display for the openning weekend. read more

I stumbled upon this store when I was with my Grandma, and I have to say it was a definite find. The staff was courteous and extremely helpful, my grandma and i love the fact that it is smaller and has everything you need to take care of your family pets. It doesn't sell fish and other live animals, which is an added bonus, because it really makes it feel like more of a boutique.
