The grooming staff are nice but cashiers out on the floor aren't the friendliest. It's a good sized store with products I will sometimes get for my pet. One of my favorite locations, because it's clean and doesn't reek of bad odors. I came here after venturing all the other shops, and needed to buy cat supplies. I was happy cuz everything that I needed was in stock. Good selection of natural pet food. I love the Natural Balance brand, and my vet approves Hassle free pet adoption, my besties adopted a kitten, in no time. Usually, at other locations something would be out of stock. Not here. They have cute pet costumes for dogs and cats. Too bad my cats not listen and love to give me a hard time. They would look so cute in a tutu or in a Beetlejuice costume. I honesty expected more because the location I normally go to has me spoiled, but I was so disappointed and won't be back. The smell was horrible (I know it's a pet store but I have been in pet stores that don't smell like pet stores if that makes sense). This is a well stocked store and they carry a large number of different, all-natural, pet foods. The employees are well informed on the variety of pet foods. In addition, this store stocks many reptiles to include various types of turtles. The store is well laid out but a tad smaller than other Petco's I've visited. But don't let this stop you from visiting! read more

How dare they harm my dog! We sent her over there so she could get her puppy cut, and 6 hours later we pick her up, only to find a bloodied burn spot beneath her ears and a huge bump and another bloodied burn spot under her right leg! This is disgusting and unacceptable! They caused my dog pain and tried to cover it with a bandanna (which was soon covered in blood)! We will not be taking anymore of our hard earned money here just so they can neglect our poor dogs! I knew something was wrong when she was extremely upset as we came in to pick her up after four hours. We were turned away as our dog was barking, clearly unsettled, and trying to escape. I was just forced to leave this Store and denied service for my dog. The groomer and manager called me a liar to my face. I mentioned upon arrival how active my dog was and it was off since I had given her CBD oil before arrival. Apparently they can't groom dogs if on it. So what really happened is I pulled up real quick from work and my husband put dog in car. He was supposed to give her CBD. I texted him in front of the employees and he texted back no he didn't. He forgot. I showed the text to the staff. They called me a liar and refused to do the service. Groomer Alex and manager Olivia. Do not go. These people should not work here. I am still waiting for a response from Petco. I also contacted better business bureau. I can't stress enough how unbelievable horrible Olivia and Alex were. read more

Please be careful when buying fish at this store!!! My family invested in a large fish tank and fish this weekend. We made our initial purchase from pet smart in Hanover. Great experience. Later today I went to buy a few more fish, and went to the local Petco. I purchased two small goldfish. The employee informed me, after he had bagged the two fish, that they had just been treated for anchor worm, However they were fine. He suggested I also buy anti disease/med to put in the tank to be careful, of which I purchased and went on my way. I took the fish home and placed the bag in the tank to adjust to the temperature. Before releasing the two goldfish I took a close look at them, and noticed that one still had anchor worm!!!!! Very thankful I had not released them to sicken the $80 worth of fish already purchased. I immediately got in the car to return the fish. Petco would only refund me via a store card. So I decided to look at other fish. When I showed my concern the employee then informed me that many tanks had issues. I ended up buying bird seed. My message after this post = Do not buy fish here. read more

The Petco in Waugh Chapel (Gambrills,MD). So I have been wanting a Black Moor Goldfish. I have had one before and he lasted forever, died of old age. This Petco finally got some. I had almost $300 dollars worth of stuff in my cart for this fish. They refused to sell me this $6.00 fish. Told me that I needed a 20 gallon tank for this 1 gold fish. I said I have had this kind of fish before and that you don't need that size tank. They then came back with 4 or 5 other excuses. Finally they said that the manager stated she would not sell me the fish because, if the fish died they would not be responsible for refunding me the $6.00, therefore they would not sell me the fish. If you read the reviews on the actual website for this location, I am not the only one that has experienced these issues pertaining to the selling of their fish. The employees were condescending and extremely rude! The customer service and management are the absolute worst and they all should be fired and replaced with personnel that want to make money for the Petco chain and whom are courteous and helpful with their patrons. I will never go back and I plan to tell all of my pet owner friends to not waste their time or their money in that particular Petco. As far as I am concerned, PET SMART will now be my new place for buying my pet products! read more

This is quite the nice Petco, I started shopping here because they carry a food brand another large brand pet store doesn't carry. The staff that has been there has been amazing each time I've gone and the one employee is surprisingly knowledgable on the food products they offer. I also personally feel that the animals here are well cared for and cleaned often. Which is a big plus for me. The only thing I wish is that the cat rescue wasn't placed it the tiny little corner, I have been here roughly 10 times and just realized today it was even there!!! If you have a dog that the breed standard describes it as having long hair, please read the information below. I had booked appointments online for two of our dogs, scheduled for November 23rd, 2019. My dog, a small 4lb. female Yorkie, 6 months and two days old with short hair was schedule for 12 noon. When I made the appointment online, it quoted bath and grooming for $44.00. Our dog was dropped at the grooming area without any issues. However, when my husband went to pick up our dog after we received a call from one of their groomers, he was told the fee was $58.00 instead of $44. My husband called me before paying because I had told him the fee was supposed to be $44. He put the groomer on the phone with me and when I questioned the fee, the groomer put her grooming manager on the phone. The manager said that the policy of Petco is to charge base on the standard breed description of the dog, which states that it has long hair regardless of my booking being for short hair. I explained to her that it didn't make sense to charge me for services not rendered when my dog had short hair AND that at the time of booking online, I chose the breed of my dog and the system never gave me a notice that there would be an additional charge of $14 because of the breed standard. I told her I felt they were defrauding me by charging me extra for long hair that my dog never had. She said it was Petco's policy and gave the phone back to my husband and walked away. At the time he went to pick up our Yorkie, my husband dropped our Maltese dog of 11 years old with short hair too, because she had an appt schedule for 5:15pm, and we were told that we could drop her when we pick up our Yorkie. So my husband paid the $58 and brought our baby home and she looked cleaned but without style. The reason given was that because it was the first grooming she had, they did a light style to introduce Nina to grooming. My husband was as upset as I was, but I couldn't go with him because I was sick at home (bronchitis). So he went back to talk to the store manager about this issue, and the manager stated the same policy, so my husband was about to leave when the grooming manager, came out of the grooming area into the store to tell him that he needed to take our Maltese home. She said that she couldn't service her because we accused her of defrauding us and misleading Petco's customers by not being clear in their booking system. My husband had printed a copy of the original booking which reflects the amount quoted and how the system had the info it was a Yorkie but she refused to see any papers and angrily said to take our dog and NEVER BRING OUR DOGS TO BE GROOMED at this store. It was clearly a way to get back at us for complaining about what we saw as an unfair and misleading policy. This was not the first time my dogs were groomed in the store and it's the one near our home. We had always had excellent service from Petco's sales people and we buy our dogs food there. Now, we feel insulted and disrespected by a Manager who obviously didn't want to hear what the customer had to say and has no skills to reach a compromise that would keep the customer coming back. Petco must fix their online grooming system to reflect the added charge for non-existent long hair and specifically state your rates. Also, your Grooming Manager at the Gambrills store claimed that she had talked to the regional manager about it but when we requested to get his/her name, she refused to give it to us and left towards the back of the grooming area. During all of this, the manager of the store, a young lady with dark hair, wouldn't say anything. She let the grooming manager vent on my husband and didn't do anything at all. We actually have four dogs so this means that we now need to find another place to buy our dog's food and get groomed. We are deeply disappointed by all of this and hope that at least Petco fix the online booking system and if you have a dog that is a Yorkie, Maltese or other long hair breed, be aware of their online booking system. read more

The grooming department is a joke. I would give 0 stars if I could. Twice in a row, I requested that my two dogs be completely shaved, washed, and have their nails trimmed and buffed. On two separate occasions, they were returned with multiple patches of long fur all over their bodies and sharp, uneven scratchy nails. After the first time, I was annoyed, but figured it was a one-off bad experience. I was wrong. The second time, my dogs weren't ready to be picked until 3 hours after their planned pickup time. Despite being at the groomers for 7 hours, they were still returned with ragged nails and uneven cuts -some of the fur on their feet and faces hadn't even been trimmed. I wouldn't have paid $50 for the service I received, so forking over $200 felt like a personal insult. Never again. read more

I'm extremely disappointed this Petco doesn't carry my cats food. I know that seems silly, but it's a major brand of Friskies. Why would they not carry more Friskies? There's an entire aisle of speciality food but there's a lot less of a selection of normal cat food. Sadly you're better off going to the grocery store. Decent Petco. And the only reason I can say that is because most of the employees are incredibly sweet. I am not sure why but my dogs REALLY dislike coming here. I have three pitbull rescues and like to take them on as many outings as possible in order to encourage proper socialization and just to get them to experience different environments and people. They have never have had a bad reaction to any other petco or Petsmart or other retail shop except whenever we come here. They pancake down to the ground and are incredibly nervous and on edge. Not sure if it has to do with the vibe, smell we humans can't smell, or what....but they don't like it one bit. To the point that I just don't take them to this location any more. The past few months I have noticed they are almost always out of the big bags of food I buy for them - canadae sea - and now recently they don't even have the small bags. Not sure what's going on there. May resort to venturing back to the Annapolis Petco since I still visit that area pretty regularly, but just a shame because this location is so close to our new home. read more

Horrible customer service, yesterday I got news that I had to give up my snake because I'm moving duty stations due to being in the Navy. I have no close family or friends that can take in a snake so I wanted to know that best option for my snake and heard I could give my snake back to the store and I feel like that would be the safest for a time sensitive move. This has happened once before, but if you know anything about being in the military, there are time sensitive moves, which sadly cause pets to have to find a new home sometimes. The lady I spoke to on the phone was insensitive and while I asked for help trying to figure out options to rehome my pet she was rude. I then told her I'm in the military and she then said they don't have room. I can understand if there was no room but there was no need to comment on me giving up my pet because she did not know the circumstances and this is not something I want to do. I shop at Petco for my dog's food/toys and get her groomed there. I will NOT be getting her groomed there any longer. I'm so disappointed after today's visit and for the amount of money they charge I expect better. Typically a grooming visit takes between 3 - 4 hours. Kind of ridiculous to begin with, but I can deal with that. This morning we had an appointment at 9:30a and was told she would be ready by 1:30p-ish. I get a call at 1:40p and am told that it's going to be another hour. 5.5 hours for a grooming appointment is beyond ridiculous. Ok so check it out. I'm always out to support the brotha man and not the other man! However if that is not feasible then I like to help out the little man vice the bigga man. That's exactly what I sought out to do this afternoon. I wanted me some little fishies! I didn't need any elaborate fishies, just some regular fishies. Naturally I took to yelp to find me a nearby pet store. I found one and strolled on in. To my surprise this pet store didn't have ANY pets for sale! Except for a couple of rat looking things. On second thought I don't even think those were for sale. So now at this point I'm a little down. Luckily there was another pet shop next door. I waltzed in there and this place had absolutely no animals! I broke down and asked the man, "Say Jack! Where can a brotha get some fishies at around here?" He kindly directed me to the local petco. Like I said I'm against the bigga man but sometimes there's no one else to turn to. I glide into Petco and oh lawd it's a fire... They had all kinds of animals. I proceeded straight to the fishies. I told the young man there I was looking for some fresh water fishies that didn't need much maintenance nor a fancy tank setup. I want to ease my way into the fish game, just to be sure it's a lifestyle I can be about. So my man tells me that beta fish are the way to go. So I walked out of there with three fish, a tap water un tapper, some fake blue diamonds, and some fishie food for about $25. All in all I'll call it a success. The service was good. 3/5 because there was only one hot chick working there and she didn't look at me! read more

I shop at this Petco for all of my new puppy's supplies. Great selections, decent pricing on most items (in comparison to other big box competitors) and friendly employees. Whenever I'm at the store there always seems to be a pet event/class/activity which gives this place a nice "community" feel. Not a deal breaker; however, the general cleanliness of the store floors could be improved (mostly dried urine in corner areas of the product shelves). After 2 months of shopping in the store for supplies, I decided to try the grooming services. My puppy's service (puppy works option) was completed in the timeframe provided (2 hours) but he looked pretty much the same as when he went in for service. Needless to say, I'll continue to shop in the store but will pass on the grooming salon service. read more

I am finally taking the time to write this review - it is long overdue ....... We now live 2.5 hours away and still make appointments at the Petco in Waugh Chapel . We have been using Eva -who was recommended from a friend . She is now the Manager of the salon . Eva does an excellent job with our dog , Lily. She is great to work with and does an outstanding job grooming our dog. We have tried (in the past ) a few other "local " groomers to try and get something closer to our home but no other groomer has been able to do as good of a job as the Petco in Waugh Chapel . I received EXCELLENT customer service from a staff members named 'Charlotte'. I came in to get my cats food for the month like I usually do, and to my disappointment they were resetting the cat section and the food wasn't where it normally was... And they cut down on the selection of the Pro Plan flavors. I found the one kind they like, but the other kind was no where that I found... Taking a shot in the dark I got another flavor. On my way to checkout Charlotte asked if I was doing ok and I told her the situation. She said she would look in the back to see if they had that flavor. But sadly no. Disappointed I checked out snd she said she would look around and call me if she found it and I gave her my number. About 3 hours later she called and said she found what I was looking for!! Yippee!! She went above and beyond to satisfy my pets needs and I was truly grateful. read more

They didnt try to sell me useless expensive products but pointed out what would be best for my puppy. One of the staff members even bought Buster some special food that he loves. Went to get my dogs groomed and gave specific instructions that they are to be shaved all the way down from tip of nose to tip of tail. I called to see if they were almost done and they told me they were blending their tail and head. I told them I asked for them to be shaved in those places too, they seemed very upset that they actually had to do more work. When I went to pick them up, lo and behold they still didn't listen to my instructions, my dogs tails were shaved but heads blended and it looked so stupid! Now I have to shave their heads since they didn't!!! Idiots! Don't go to this petco, they can't follow the simplest instructions, the groomers are incredibly rude and they try to overcharge you. They quoted me for $192 for a medium and large dog, when living in Hawaii I never paid more than $140! Luckily the manager dropped the price when I spoke to him about it which I'm truly grateful. However it still doesn't make up for how my dogs were cut and the lack of customer service by the grooming team who by the way told me I don't know what I'm doing and shouldn't get my dogs shaved when I have been for 6+ years at petcos which I know is in their system. I will be going to another place for now on to avoid this, this location has turned my business away from all petcos forever and I was a very loyal customer. read more

This review is for their grooming department only. I will continue to buy food and supplies here but will NEVER use their grooming services again. The 2 girls that work here (well the ones that were here in June 2014) were so unbelievably rude and cold. They were obviously miserable working here and never cracked a smile. I dropped my 2 dogs off and watched as they tied them to the wall while they were waiting their turn. I noticed how it was a slip collar and asked them to not leave them like that because it was choking my dog. She gave me attitude and said it would only be a short while. I wanted to take them and leave at that point, but really needed them bathed, So I walked around the store a little bit and decided to peak in and check on my dogs a little later. Sure enough, they were still tied to the wall choking! I went in and told them to untie them and they had better not let anything happen to my dogs. I was so pissed, but again, needed them groomed and left them there against my better judgment. When I picked them up, they tell me they couldn't trim the nails on one of my dogs. I don't know why, he is a gentle dog...so I had to get the manager and he actually trimmed his nails. This was just a bad experience I would like to forget. I don't think these girls need to work around animals and hopefully Petco realizes this and gets rid of them. Until then, I will avoid. read more

Don't live in the area, but when I'm out and about, I've stopped in for small animal food and supplies. A nice sized store, their small animal items always seem to be well-stocked. Employees are friendly and the store isn't as dark and grubby as other Petcos in the area. read more
