The intent of my visit was to purchase some tropical fish. I went directly to the aquatics department and decided on the fish to purchase. I looked around the area for an associate, no one was around. I canvassed the entire store and could not locate anyone. I decided to wait in the long checkout line. Twenty minutes later I approached the older associate who informed me, "it'll be a while since the aquatics guy is working a register". Really? Only one employee in the entire store could perform that function? If that's the case, shouldn't he have been pulled off after he completed his transaction to assist me? After all, I waited my turn in line. PetSmart offers the same products and services and is typically cheaper. The location is. It the greatest, however that has become my store of choice. This is the first and last time I will take my dog here. The facilities and staff was great but my dog came back with razor burn which developed into an open sore. My poodle was a former show dog (with previous owner) and she is used to being groomed to perfection. My poodle had not been groomed in two to three months because i was taking care of my brother in California I told the staff I wanted the shortest hair (check), standard poodle head (check), ball on tail (check) and shortest on paws (check)! They charged me an additional $5 for matting fee-- no problem -- her ears were long and tangled. When I got Ari home, I noticed a few "razor burns" on both sides of the face, and on her neck. No biggie-- I am really a relaxed person and maybe it was a new groomer. LOL Day after the grooming-- rash is red. Not pink and barely noticeable. Remember now my dog is used to grooming- never seen this on her before. I waited another day and two out of three razor burns are cleared up-- irritation gone. One side of her muzzle is getting redder. I called Petco. I let the staff know my concerns, she said she would have the manager call me on Sunday (Its Thursday) and took my number. Sunday came no call- didnt worry- maybe the manager has a lot to do after being off for three days. Took another picture of the one remaining razor burn. Its bleeding!! My dog is irritated by the rash and keeps rubbing it. I put ointment on the burn and wrap her two legs so she cant scratch it. Today is Monday, the burn looks better its starting to scab over. I call petco and speak to a manager. She says to send pictures and she will look at it. She says there is a risk of irritation when cut to a clean face and I would have to prove she got it from there. My dog is a poodle!! she is use to getting these type of grooming and this is the first time she got this kind of rash!! She called back after viewing the pictures and said Ari did not leave like that. I know she didnt leave like that!! But this is a result of a razor burn from your clippers!!!! I asked her if she could refund me the grooming the fee which is about $45- the total was $70. It was the grooming that caused the rash to begin with. I am in the process of acquiring a puppy. In preparation, I looked to petco.com for supplies: carriers, leashes, collars, food dishes, treats, etc. I love shopping online because everything is so organized and I can be efficient. I added all the items I wanted to my shopping cart (well over $200 worth) and proceeded to enter my address. Next. "Error" Man. I wish someone told me that I LIVE IN A RURAL AREA. I honestly had no idea, I mean I live in waikiki, where there is traffic, popos, high rises.... My bad. Also, maybe less importantly, I wish someone would have told me that petco doesn't ship anything to Hawaii. It would have saved me a lot of time. Well, now I'm pissed. I call their 800 number and "wait for the next available customer service agent" for 10 minutes before I hang up. I decide to drive to Petco and just buy the stuff there. Terrible grooming! I took my baby in for nails and a little trimming and finished after two hours at the vet. The groomer was very unprofessional! He cut her paw very deep and the vet had to clean it and bandage it up. He also cut all of her whiskers off!! and did a very bad trimming on the paws. My dog has her paw all bandaged up and has a cone collar for a week. Petco paid for the vet but said they will not give any compensation. I will not go there again! read more

Desi at the PetCo. grooming salon in Honolulu was fantastic. He spent sometime with me -socially distanced -to talk about Duffy and ask important questions. We talked about how I would like him groomed and he also asked a bit about his history and his experiences with grooming. I ended up telling him the horrible story about Petsmart and he was very compassionate and empathetic. He walked me through the download of the Petco app, which allowed me to get 20% off. I appreciated that. He made me feel at home and in addition to that, Duffy was groomed wonderfully and seemed to have a pep in his step afterwards! After the grooming, Desi explained that Duffy was great and that he had no problems grooming Duffy at all. He also explained that there was no concern for Duffy's age. I was so happy. I was worried based on how PetMart treated me. Duffy can't wait to return and I can't wait to tell all my friends and family with dogs to go see Desi at PetCo! read more

This review is mostly for the grooming department. Sonia is the best! Ok to be fair I've never had a bad experience with any of the groomers there but Sonia is who I usually take my dog to. They're all excellent and all seem to really care about the animals and take the time to explain their prices and answer any questions you might have. I had a bad experience with another grooming place and was super hesitant to drop my dog at petco... I mean let's be honest, we've heard horror stories about these chain grooming places. So fast forward..... My dog needed a groomer and I was this close to learning how to do it myself, before I decided to give petco a try. Petco... I can't say enough about these groomers that work at this location. They were so friendly that my dog was wagging his tail on the first visit! You can tell they really love animals. This is why I would totally recommend them to everyone: 1. Their grooming stations are out in the open so you can see what's going on. No dark spaces or hidden rooms. 2. They will call you if they think they're running late or will be longer than promised with your pet. 3. They're super friendly! They walk you through their grooming process and answer any questions you might have. 4. They're reasonably priced. For someone that has their dog fully groomed once a month and bathed twice a month, it's very reasonable, about $50 for a bath/trim and $100 for the full groom. This price varies by what services you choose so ask your groomer. 5. They buff nails instead of cutting them. I can't tell you how much this makes a difference in my dog's anxiety level! Less stress for the animals! 6. Did I mention they're super friendly?! Pro tip: they're usually really busy on the weekends so allow for an extra hour or two. Weekdays are usually less busy. My dog takes about 4-5 hours to fully groom but that can easily be 6 hours on a weekend. He doesn't seem to mind and they give him breaks so he's not super tired and standing on a table for 6 hours. This is based on service again! I got a dog not too long ago and first thing on the lists were vaccinations and training. Now that he had all four shots administered I didn't want to travel far for training sessions so I called my local Petco. I was told the trainer was in a session and would return my call, and twice, no one called back. Are you kidding me? How hard is it to pick up a phone to schedule a training session? At first I shunned this store. For months I drove all the way to Kahala to get my pet supplies even though I only lived a couple blocks away. Why?! I always thought this place was expensive and I did not want to support a big box store. I finally caved in a moment of weakness. It was rush hour and I did not want to deal with a sea of cars. Fortunately, it allowed me to explore a place previously unexplored. Surprisingly, this place is not that bad. I was happy at their huge selection of cat food, their refillable litter pails, the large selection of live pets, and the pet-friendly environment (Customers were walking around with their dogs and cats). Prices were shockingly good too. One requirement though is joining their Petco Pals Rewards program. It was not too much of a hassle though and gave me savings on my purchase. The employees here are very knowledgeable and friendly. Everyone that's helped me so far has been so nice. If you want to have your pet groomed, grooming services are available too. I'm not sure on the pricing of that. Parking has always been readily available. They seem to have more stalls than needed so there's always stalls open. read more

I know this is a big box pet store but this is a great store and products and pets are sold at a much lower price than the local pet stores. My son has bought three turtles from here which he wouldn't have been able to buy at a store near where we live. This store is huge. Lots of everything for your pet. I used to raise Oscars and I like their fish area. I have to say is so fricking clean. Everything the pets are in is immaculate. Its obvious they are constantly attended to. I was taking a picture of some parrot food prices and a female worker saw me. I told her I just want to compare the price to where I buy my food from. She was really nice and said if its lower they will be more than happy to match the price which I thought was nice. Everyone I have dealt with in here was really friendly and very helpful and knowledgeable which is why I have no problem bringing my son here. I would much rather use my money to support Calvin and Susie, Hawaii Doggie Bakery, Kalihi Pet Center or other local shops. However, with the Pals reward program, sometimes I take advantage of the coupons that only come with large businesses. Definitely sign up for this program, even if you only come here once in a while. There is a large variety of pet supplies here and the convenience is nice. They have a wide variety of natural and healthy dog food and treat brands. However, I am not very pleased with customer service or their online pricing policy. We found a dog carrier case online that was on sale for black Friday. You may need go to two places instead of one but you'll probably spend much less and hopefully from a locally owned merchant. Even the pet foods are cheaper at vet clinics and we all know that vet clinics charge a lot. Save your money and shop elsewhere for the same products because you'll find them cheaper elsewhere. If you're bringing your pet here for vaccinations you really need to find a real vet. Don't be "budget limited" saving a few bucks on vaccinations when your pet's health is better cared for by a regular vet that your pet can see annually. Went into Petco Beretania for a scheduled grooming appointment today and was told that my dog's usual groomer no longer works for them. The groomer helping us then tried touch his paws or something...maybe to see how he would react. I have no idea what he was doing. My dog did end up play-biting him and he got injured somehow. Then he told us that he couldn't help us and we had to take in consideration about the other dogs??? Like our dog isn't even aggressive at all. He then gave us a contact on a post-it note with a veterinarian clinic & resort that has no connection to petco?? He didn't even offer any other solutions, like getting another groomer to see if our dog worked with them? And then I noticed that I can no longer book appointments through the app and I have to call, so I'm pretty sure our account got dinged or something. I GIVE GAYLE AND THE STAFF FIVE STARS. I am a regular at petco beretania until recently they have Cassie heading puppy playtime on Saturdays. AND it is NOT worth it. Might as well play with your puppy at home or drive to petco hawaii kai! Puppy play time is free on the weekends at 2PM TO 230 PM. If Gayle is doing puppy play time, then go. Her system is better. She separates shy, timid, and small dogs from active and large dogs. Full 30 minutes is worth it. With Cassie, she alternates dogs and has this policy of two dogs at a time because of overstimulation and safety. Which I completely understand, but less than five minutes of play in a 30 minute period is simply just not worth the trip! So just imagine if there are five puppies, you basically might as well not go. We took our puppy today. And there was at least four puppies. OUT OF FIFTEEN MINUTES, our pup ONLY PLAYED FOR TWO MINUTES AND EIGHTEEN SECONDS. Yes, I timed it. Because this just shows how worthless it is. Also, if your pup is very playful, be aware that he/she will probably play less because of her policy. This was not the first time. I went at Cassie's play time at least five times. With our new puppy addition to our family, I can finally review Petco as a patron, not just a stalker playing with the Humane Society Puppies. This Petco is very clean and very organized. Although the staff seemed a little hard to locate at times, they were very willing to help me out when I found them. It's located off of Pensacola and Young Street next to Walgreens. Once they provided snow for the dogs during Christmas, which is a fantastic event to provide to the community. However, being in Hawaii, the selection of supplies isn't always as comprehensive as other locations on the mainland. I also wish they would make information on their services more specific to their locations on their website. They all seem to be very vague and require that you walk into the store to receive information on prices and packages. There isn't a big competitive market on pet supplies, but Petco is a worthy player. read more

Although this is one of the smaller Petco locations, they definitely stock everything you could want or need for your furry/hairy/feathery/scaly family member(s). At my most recent visit I was picking up a new collar for my puppy-nephew. I was delighted to see various colors, prints, designs & styles offered. I just needed a plain black nylon collar & I was hoping to snag one with a metal snap buckle but they didn't have a large enough size Hana Boy is a 5yr old Pitbull, somewhere in the 80lb neighborhood & Aunty Mei is an overly paranoid aunt, worrying that one day he might snap a plastic buckle. I spent probably 10-15mins hunting thru the entire aisle of collars & harnesses & leashes but in the end, I had to settle for one with a plastic buckle for ~$10. This is the new Petco that just opened on Beretania- and just in time! I recently adopted my Aurelie Bordeaux LeFleur (Lilli for short) from the kitty shacks at the Humane Society and they gave me a $5 coupon to use at Petco. It's very easy to find and there is ample amount of parking. I've been there a couple of times and have always been greeted as I walked in and asked if I needed help while browsing. I definitely appreciate the customer service. They have a large selection of whatever pet needs you're looking for. For kitties: Litter, litter boxes, deodorizers, food, collars, brushes, medicines, toys- there is never only one choice. If you get overwhelmed by the selection, ask and the staff will tell you what they recommend and why. I've been helped in finding a good cat litter/deodorizer mix for my small studio so it doesn't smell like I own a kitty, talked to about different things I can do to help my beautiful long haired duchess to keep from coughing due to hairballs, and picking out toys to suit her, since she's sassy because she's already 2 (wiggle a ribbon in front of her face and she looks offended). They are all very knowledgeable and friendly. Four stars because their prices are a touch high. They do offer a rewards program however which does help out in saving a little cash, and it is free to sign up. This store is my favorite pet supply store. What I love about this store is their presentation and cleanliness. Their prices are a little lower than some specialty pet stores and that's why I give them a four. Their customer service is good and knowledgeable. Another thing I like about this store is that they connect shelter dogs with potential dog owners. I find that to be a very responsible thing to do. Senior citizens can be hooked up with a dog for free! Another thing I like is their return policy for their fishes. If they die after a couple days, they will replace them at no extra cost. They ask for a sample of your tank water which is the responsible thing to do. For all you know it could be the water. They will then inform you of the health of your tank's water. This service is free of charge when you bring in your dead fish. I had it happen twice and the took the second fish back and replaced it with a fish of my choice. Of course, you have to pay the difference which is only fair. A good sign of a good pet store is the condition of their aquarium. It's like that old adage for restaurants. If the restroom is filthy, that's a clue of that restaurant's hygiene policy. I find that to be true. And it is no different in how a pet store keeps their tanks. After all, the tank is the fish's restroom. Just thought I'd say that. They have pet grooming available here for those too lazy to do it themselves. I went in a couple days ago in the midst of getting a deluxe hood and light for my 10G aquarium. He questioned what were my needs and what I could use for my tank and what not to. This one dude named Steve, pale Asian guy helped me out. Man, this guy was knowledgeable in regards to "anything aquarium". He said that he just transferred into SaltWater tanks and all. But I was picking his brain the whole time with anykind questions and this guy got an answer for me for every question. Unfortunately they didnt have what I wanted but it was ok. He gave me alternatives as into checking the online site or go to a neighboring pet shop in the viscinity. On the side note, not regarding Steve. The fish section is pretty WEAK A.F. More supplies and equipment than anything else. At least if you get the PetPals card you can get discounts for being a member on a select item. This store gets any stars just because I am able to get the things I need in one stop but at horrific prices- so think convenient. Avoid online because it's a scam- prices and inventory is different and the company doesn't match it. So basically they scam you in store or online either way they get you. Customer service here sucks!!! They act like police with free samples ..they're free!!??!! They don't care about selling product obviously. Most workers look sad and have low product knowledge. This Petco is okay. Clean, organized and stocked most of the time. The reason for only a 3 star rating is 2 employees there. Majority of the employees are super nice and helpful. The employees I frown on are the big local woman (kinda masculine) and the older gray haired Asian guy. with glasses. These 2 are thee most unhelpful Petco employees ever! Once, I asked the old grumpy Asian man to get a cat item down from the top that was on display. He was not happy getting it down (it wasn't big and heavy, just something I wanted to look at before buying it) and while I was looking at it, I could tell he didn't like having to stand there and wait for me. As for the big local woman (kinda masculine), I noticed she's not very friendly and not very approachable. And I remember a couple times I've gone and needed something, seems like she was trying to avoid helping me. So when I go to this Petco, I don't even bother with these 2 unfriendly employees. Every time I go to this location I have such a positive experience! Employees are a delight to interact with and they really know their stuff. Petco has a phenomenal range of quality dog food: from high end to more affordable. Most options are no soy, corn, by products, etc. I always know I can rely on them to provide quality products that are natural and beneficial for my dog. I also have had experience with them grooming my 4.5 Yorkshire Terrier. They took me the day of when I called last minute on a Sunday. The employee knew exactly what I wanted. She then began to explain to me the different lengths of fur she could cut it down to with a visual. Our Yorkie was in and out in only a few hours and he looked exactly how we described we wanted! I take my dog to get groomed all the time but this last time I did come into difficulties with my dog. I had called & spoke to the grooming salon manager, Lindsey, I addressed the issue to her & she was very apologetic & was able to help me out on my problem. I hate to be the one to call & nag & I had told her that. Her response was that she would rather know about the problem to prevent it in the future, that's a good answer if you ask me! Ever since I became a pet owner two months ago, I am a huge fan of Petco. They have the largest variety of pet paraphernalia and food ever! And I've been to Kalihi Pets, Kahala Petland, and PetSmart. Which are all great pet stores, but Petco has the largest selection (and unfortunately, the highest prices). But if you enroll in the Pals Rewards and shop online during sales, it's totally worth it. Some of the employees at Petco are very knowledgeable about their products and they educate you on what is best for your particular pet. I was happy to learn about grain-free, natural dog food and the comparisons between the standard brands like Purina and the more holistic brands like Blue Buffalo and Wellness. I also have positive experiences with the online Petco employees who offer online chatting customer service. They helped me to establish my Petco online account. I will soon utilize this Petco's puppy socialization seminars, dog training classes, and dog grooming services. More to update later! read more

We went there once to get a harness for or 2 cats the this girl named Kat helped us choose the bet and safest harness they had (Follow me kitty). We also went last night to buy more flea treatment for our cats. The gave us a good recommendation and told us about price matching. Came there with my mom to pick up some cat food and fish supplies. My mom chose a plant for her fish tank and was carrying it around the store, which didn't bother us. I did think it was kind of weird when we went to the check out and she was trying to balance the wet plant on the counter while trying to ring it out. But oh well, we were leaving already. So when one of the guy worker's was ringing us out, the manager(?) who was on the other check out station asked my mom if the lady that helped us offered us a bag for the plant. My mom said no. The lady that helped us came to the front of the store to drop off a fish my mom chose and right after, the manager made a wise comment to her, saying, "When did we start giving plants to customers without bags?" I was surprised, because it was unprofessional to correct her in front of us. And the way he said it was not manager-like at all. But afterward, the lady worker snapped back at the manager about us like we weren't right in front of her. Saying, "Well she kinda took the plant herself and walked away with it," in an irritated voice. First of all, I don't know where these people learned their customer service from; but how dare you talk about a customer, and even worse, my mom, like that in front of her. My mom is so sweet, she even went to the extent to apologize for walking away with the plant, and explaining herself to the manager about how she didn't know what to do. My mom shouldn't have to apologize and explain about anything. In addition to that, the guy that was helping us to ring out our stuff kept forgetting about how I said I needed to pick up my online order. He said he will get that for me after ringing out my mom. And instead, he went to the other register and started helping out these other customers next in line. They were picking up an online order too. He then acknowledges me, saying that I have to pick up an order as well. So I let it go that he is helping out someone else before me and followed the other customers to the online pick up order station. He decided to take care of them first. So I just waited behind them. After they picked up their order, I was clearly right in front of him waiting to be helped, and he starts walking away. This used to be the best store ever. I paid for a package with adult 1 and 2 classes last June, but because of their inability to schedule adequately, I haven't been able to schedule the adult 2 class for Penny. I had to go all the way to Headquarters to finally get store credit. Their manager Tonya called yesterday to say that they would credit me $119. Today I go in and they offered me $109.42 because she made a mistake and couldn't bother to call me. I'll use the store credit and start shopping at PetSmart! read more

If anyone wonders why Amazon is so successful, try Petco online--a joke. Discount codes don't work; chat service sucks. Even the chat rep admitted they often have tech problems and couldn't help. Gave up trying to get the discount and placed the order. If you do place an order, don't wait for curbside delivery; go into the store and pick up your order and save time. The grooming section looks very good, however. Customers seemed very satisfied. I do admit that Petco associates are much better than Kahala Petland, a dark unfriendly place. read more
