We have a menagerie - a sulcata turtle, bantam chickens, cat, fish, birds, worm farm and a rabbit. Needless to say we need a one-stop pet supply place nearby. The store has a pretty good stock of everything we need. The prices aren't bad - and you can get a discount if you join their loyalty club. Of course you can get better prices at Waimanalo Feed which we also patronize but this is very convenient. The staff at the Hawai Kai store is great - always very friendly and helpful. We also like the way they partner with the Hawaiian humane society to adopt out animals. I cannot speak for the grooming services since we don't have a dog but maybe one day... read more

The staff at Petco is WONDERFUL...The rating is for the VET program/staff. The vet today (11/14/22 @ 4pm) told me to come in after my 6lb puppy swallowed a chicken bone 2 days ago (Saturday) in which case I brought to the Vet ER. The OTHER vet (unassociated with Vetco) ran x-ray and says to watch over closely until it's passed. Well, it's been 2 days with no BM therefor I called Vetco and they told me to bring her right in. My friend dropped everything at work to come take us (husband had car) only for the vet, DR WALLACE, to CANCEL because she has other plans later. I explained I couldn't get a ride since my husband has the car but the vet selfishly, after completely inconveniencing us, she still canceled the visit, despite it being life threatening. I'm paying for Vetco ($20/mo) which include these visits, but that's doesn't mean to lower the quality of care. The Vet made a self-serving excuse that she "wants to give the puppy good care" but an HOUR isn't enough time to make sure she'll live through the night? Upon entering the store they tell you " you can only come in as long as you're shopping" then they are limiting one person per party. I didn't bring someone with me to wait while i shop. Very friendly staff, we went to get our puppy his first shots and then looked at dog food again to see of Merrick really was the best for our puppy and the gentleman who helped us have us lots of information and also told us about PRICE MATCH and thank god he did! We got sooo many stuff for way less than price innstore we got the online petco.com price!!! I had no idea they did price match. Today we bought a nail Grinder which was for $60 in store and was only $27.97 online! The dog food we get is 25lbs bag of Merrick and in store it's $61 but online $10 LESS so we will always be price matching for everything now thanks to the guy that helped us. read more

HORRIBLE!! I've gone here for 5+ years and they denied my rescue dog service because he was breathing hard because he was hot because of the local weather! They insisted he was sick after we've kept him up to date on all vet visits etc. VERY DISTURBING. DO NOT take your fur baby here if you consider them family. Terrible!! Finally have given up taking my dog there for grooming! The staff are not well trained always quoting over phone different price than when I go in....lots of turn over... no consistent management... unprofessional in handling the customer! I called for an appoint.. requesting a certain groomer for NAIL TRIM AND PAW PADS( trimming hair between pads) girl didn't know what I was talking about!!! She told me to come in at 2 pm... When I arrive with my dog.. they look at me dumbfounded!!! The GROOMER knows my dog .. ( a BEAUTIFUL WHITE WELL BEHAVED GOLDEN RETRIEVER) and she acted like she never seen him before!! What an unbelievably terrible experience with Petco's grooming services! This is the first time I've written a Yelp review, and am doing so specifically to warn other owners against bringing dogs here. We decided to try Petco for a quick trim when our usual groomer, Doggy Box in Kakaako, was busy. I called around 11 a.m. and was told that I could bring my dog in around 1 p.m. the day of. Upon dropping him off, we were introduced to the groomer, who asked how we wanted his hair cut, how long we wanted his body and leg hair, whether we wanted his nails trimmed, etc. I was surprised when she told us that she might take 2-3 hours, since there were "a lot of dogs" that day, and that if he was difficult to groom, he might need "breaks." Still, I figured the time investment would be worth it. We were told that we would be called when he was ready to be picked up. By 4 p.m., we had still not been contacted, so we returned to the store and wait for him there. We checked with the receptionist, just to see how things were going. After looking through the computer and talking with one of the groomers, the receptionist informed us that our dog had only had "a pre-cut and a bath," but still needed his "final cut." (If anyone knows what a "pre-cut" is, I'd love to know--I asked the receptionist, but she didn't bother to explain.) She told us that he would probably be done around 6 p.m., a whopping five hours since we'd dropped him off. That sounded ridiculous to us, and we told her that we would just take him right then, even without the "final cut." The receptionist then left to get her manager, who let us know that they had, in fact, not even started any such "pre-cut" or bath at all! Apparently, the groomers were "backed up" with one dog they'd been working on all afternoon, and our dog had just spent the last three hours in a small cage in the back room. For what it's worth, the manager was apologetic, although she may have just been sorry she got caught lying. She offered to reschedule the appointment for another day, as well as a free bath and nail trimming, but after such a disappointing experience, I didn't feel a particular need to give this place a second chance. I suppose the only way things could've been worse is if these "groomers" had actually injured our dog, as I've seen owners describe in some of these reviews. I understand that sometimes things get busy, but if they do, Petco, please don't schedule even more same day appointments. Please call out of courtesy if you sense that an appointment will take nearly twice as long as expected. And please don't lie to my face. read more

This review is actually meant for Petco.com. But since I frequent Petco in Hawaii Kai, it is hard for me to separate the two. Don't ever buy anything from Petco.com. I ordered a six month supply of Heartgard ($33) and Nexgard($101) last month. The Heartgard expires in May 2021. Fine. The Nexgard expires 12/19. Why? By the time I give my dog the last pill it is already old. They are trying to unload old stuff and it is not acceptable. Pharmacy items are usually at least good for one year. I just bought the same thing locally and it is good until April 2021. It costs more to buy it here but at least I can see if the product is still good. That's the problem with ordering online.You have no control of expiration dates. I called Petco.com several times (8 by now), each time a different person would just say they will look into it. Their website says easy returns? After each call they send a survey to ask how they did. Duh? Finally spoke to a supervisor who said pharmacy items cannot be returned or exchanged. THEN DON'T SEND ME OLD STUFF! Then he said he might be able to give me a 50% refund. Really? Are you kidding me? After spending thousands of dollars in your store the last three years? The sales associate/cashier was very entertaining and honest. I think he was a little too honest. I was buying the salmon cigar chews for my dogs and he was smelling them and making a disgusted face and said it smelled bad. I told him that my dogs love it. I've taken my dog here twice. Both times were disappointing. Twice they have taken between 3 - 4 hours! I suspect they stack their appointments. Cage your dog hour upon hour before being groomed. Like your pet is not freaking out enough just being there. Purveyors provide a service convenient for the customer. Not the other way around. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. It's a perfect area for Petco to open a store in. EVERYONE in Hawaii Kai owns a dog and Koko Marina Shopping Center is dog friendly. They don't carry the brand that my furry bestie eats so I only really come here to buy her chew toys and cookies. She absolutely loves the cookies from their cookie bar. I recently purchased doggie steps from Petco so she doesn't hurt her joints from jumping up and down my bed. She's been struggling to jump on the bed lately. Must be those damn cookies lol. Guess what... They price match! I think it was going for $35 but I pulled out my handy dandy IPhone and used that app that scans the product and shows you where they have it for less. My last visit to Petco at Koko marina was such a disappointment. My groomer, Destiny, no longer works there. Needless to say, my dog needed a groom badly, and I have had good service from other groomers there...so I figured another experienced groomer would be fine. I made an appointment and took my fur-child down at his scheduled time. They gave me an estimated 4 hours, which is understandable for my dog's size and breed. Four hours go by...no call, so I call and inquired about when my dog would be done. The girl who answered assured me that he was being worked on and would be done in another 30-45 min and they would call me when he was done. Ok. No problem. An hour goes by...no call. I call and ask how my dog is and they tell me "oh yeah...he's done already". Ok. In my head, I'm thinking, "So he's done, but I didn't get any call"... Meh. By this time, I'm a little annoyed, but it wasn't that big of a deal. I head down to pick up my dog. I get to the grooming area and the girl asks which dog is mine and I can hear my dog barking in the back, which he rarely does (my dog is part husky, so it's rare that he barks unless he needs something-food,water or to be let out for bathroom). The girl lets my dog out from the kennel and opens the door and he darts out toward me. The girl walks out behind him and is holding a dirty, worn harness. "I can't seem to get this back on him", she tells me. "That's because it's not his. I have a chain collar and a leather strap leash," I tell her. She walks to the back and comes out again to the front. "Oh, I can't seem to find it. I already cleaned up the shop, and it's not here. The person who groomed your dog is gone for the day, so I can ask her where it is when she comes back- we can call you when we find it." "Umm...so how am I supposed to take my dog to the car? I have no leash, no collar and have to somehow get him out of the store, through the parking lot and to the car." I look down at my nearly 100lb dog as he wanders around the grooming area. The girl comes out and hands me a nylon/plastic strap "leash" with a metal clip on the end. The material looked like something used to tie a box. Mind you, my dog is huge, weighs nearly as much as I do, and although he is a pretty well behaved dog, he cannot be controlled with a skinny nylon/plastic leash! How was I supposed to walk my dog without a collar or a leash. I was at a loss for words, I wasn't sure if I was more annoyed or upset. By the time I brought my dog home, he rushed to his water dish and drank water for nearly a full minute. Poor guy was so thirsty. I looked over my dog, his groom not bad, but not great--sitting on the floor with a cheap nylon/plastic strap around his neck. I thought about how discourteous it was that I wasn't called when my dog was finished. I thought about the extra time he spent in the kennel and about how long he must've been wanting water. I thought about how he wouldn't be able to go on walks without his collar and leash. We went back later that night to talk to the manager about getting a replacement collar and leash until they find my old chain and leash. It would've been a nice gesture to have given us a collar and leash when they first figured they lost ours-but what was upsetting was the fact that they sent us with a little nylon/plastic twine strap and we had to come back and ask. I have not received a call about our leash or collar and the one they have given us to use is not the same quality as the one they lost. Overall, such a bad experience! read more

Just got back from there. Well actually another pet store where they actually acknowledge me. I walked in Petco around 4:40pm today. One guy at the check out counter. A few workers in the grooming area. I passed a couple more workers on my way to the restroom. After that I stood in front of the fish tanks for 15 minutes with another couple and not a single person came by. I went to the guy at the counter who looked at me then turned away. So I had to actually go all the way to counter. He paged someone to the fish area. I proceeded back to the tanks and waited another 15 minutes and nobody ever came. As I was leaving the guy at the counter just looks at me with indifference. Didn't even inquire if I was ever helped (which I wasn't). There were a few fish I wanted to buy but nobody ever came to assist. 5 miles up the road and the workers at PetLand were more than happy to assist and I got the fish I wanted. read more

If you want to read information pertinent to only Petco, Look for the "READ HERE" marking. Two days ago we found a Jackson Chameleon in the garage. We lovingly adopted it (captured it against its will and stuck it in a large plastic bin with a random plant from our yard), lavished it with tender loving care (Bought some crickets. Threw them in. And the kids drew creepy pictures and taped it on the bin), and christened him "Jack" (novel, I know). The chameleon was green. That means we're awesome caretakers. The next day it was no longer green. It spent the entire morning trying to escape. By the time my son came home from school it was an unhappy chameleon indeed (or rather, an almost dead chameleon lying despondently on its side with an odd sort of gray and yellow hue). So we released it back into the wild (corner of our yard) where he promptly turned green and went on his merry way. The end of our first pet. And all was well. Until my husband came home and my son burst into tears about Jack who will, in his words "Always be in my heart, sniffle sniffle sniffle". Sensitive little bugger. So like all good mothers who are raising coddled children who will grow up sheltered from pain and unmotivated and bring the demise to civilization as we know it, I offered him a pet substitute. "How about some MICE? Yes? And you can even name one. They're cute and fuzzy and hold their food in their hand and it's great. And we can get them TONIGHT." READ HERE: Apparently, mice are longer in fashion. Kalihi, Koolau, and Petland did not have any mice. However, the glorious corporate national chain of Petco did! And they were only $9.99 each. $9.99?!! Will my mouse come with a puppy?!! So down to Petco we went. And I must say, it is large and lovely and clean and organized and there are no cardboard boxes piled up or dusty shelves or animal feed from last century. AND the workers were really nice and very helpful. AND no one rolled their eyes at me when I inquired aboout the location of the wood shavings even though I was standing right in front of them. Literally. Just a few inches away. Not to mention my $10 mice were in nice enclosures with only a few mice, not the usual box of a million mice crawling all over each other that I'm accustomed to from the local shops. They also only carry females to discourage breeding. Which makes me wonder what happens to the males... But also assures me that, unlike the time I went to Kalihi pet store, I will NOT be purchasing a mouse that is, surprise, already pregnant. We also purchased a grand mouse habitat as my usually thrifty husband always wanted one as a child. Same reason why he bought the girls lollipops bigger than golf balls at Bed Bath and Beyond last week. I wish there were other things he always wanted as a child. Like a Kitchen Aid mixer. Or designer undies. But I digress. I must mention that said grand mouse habitat cost us over $60 and on Amazon it is, apparently, $32. With free shipping. Impulsivity comes at a cost. I also signed up for a Petco card as I sense this is the beginning of what it going to be a grand menagerie that mommy will have to care for all by herself. They tell me I already qualify for my $5 off coupon. I can use that towards something else that costs twice as much as Amazon. Score. read more

I visited Petco yesterday, after hearing from my boyfriend that a new pet store opened up in Hawaii Kai. Living in Manoa, the drive to Koko Marina Shopping Center was a little far, but it is very convenient to all the pet-owners who live out in Hawaii Kai. Petco shares the space originally taken by Foodland, with Walgreens. The store itself is pretty large and includes a pet grooming center, self-serve dog treat bar, and aisles of pet products. They have products for almost everything, including rabbits, fish, birds, dogs and cats. However, I was a little disappointed by the size of their live fish department. Despite having both fresh and saltwater varieties, many of their show tanks were empty or barely occupied. It was disappointing since they were having a great 5 for $5 sale on some varieties that weren't even in stock :( Also, it was pretty difficult to try to find an associate for help, since many of them seemed to be in the backroom... My boyfriend was trying to find someone to help him with dog food, but we literally only saw two men working there in a span of about 30 minutes, neither of which asked us if we needed help... Also, on a side note, Petco does have a few cats for sale, but they do not have dogs. One of the associates said that they do bring in dogs from the humane society on the weekends, to promote adoption. read more

I took my dog here today for a grooming and I was pleasantly surprised at how thorough they were to find out about him and his health - for just a grooming. :) I like to come here on the weekends as the Humane Society is usually there with dogs that are up for adoption and the store just seems more lively. When I have come here to pick up dog food or toys on the weekdays - I often feel like there are really only a few people in the store - and it is quite big. They carry a decent amount of brands for dog and cat food and the staff there always asks you if you need help. The prices are reasonable and the location is great with lots of parking. I have to say it you are going to have a pet store anywhere - Hawaii Kai is it! We love our pets out here (well doesn't everyone really). They have a really cute biscuit bar of course right before you get to the check out! I have yet to get a bag for my little guy - but I am sure on a visit I will. read more

This Petco was amazing! I called about mice and a really friendly staff answered the call and helped me out. When I came to visit, I ended up talking to the same staff member, her name was Carrie, and she was so sweet! You could really tell she liked her job and cared about the mice! She gave lots of fun tips and made sure we had everything our mice needed. She also helped us meet some mice to buy! She was super patient both with us and the mice. After finding the perfect duo of mice, we went home very very happy!! Really glad we had Carrie help us out. read more

Petco is a great place to come for pet supplies. They have many cute doggie clothes and a nice snack bar where you can pick up treats such as rawhide chews and doggie cookies at a reasonable price. Overall I've noticed that Petco's prices are a bit higher than Wal Mart but that's kind of to be expected. It seems to me that the dog grooming is a little higher priced as well. Normally I have my dogs nails trimmed for 10. and the filing comes with it. That day, I had them trimmed and they charged 5. more for filing. I'll probably stick to Apple Puppy or some other small business for future doggie nail trimmings. I didn't wait long for the service to be performed or spend any time at all standing in line which was nice. read more

I was resistant of coming to Petco because they replaced "Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf" and "Foodland". I am still heart broken. I normally take my mix lab and pitt bull to Pacific Paws. To my disappointment, the groomer had left for the day. It turned out to be a better choice. Since it was "Bella's" first visit to the groomer, they gave me several coupons. My first visit only cost $22.00 for a full spa treatment! They bathed Bella in a cupcake shampoo....I don't think she appreciated that as much as my daughter did. They even massaged a nourishing treatment on her paws. It made them super soft. I came back for a second visit and got the regular bath. I still received $3.00 off with my coupon. This bath was around $25.00 which included; anal gland cleaning, nail trimming, bath, flea check, and ear cleaning. This is the place where Bella will continue on getting pampered. Note: I would have given them 5 stars if the staff was more responsive and knowledgeable with their pricing and types of service. The first person I dealt with was very knowledgeable and gave me the coupons. The second time I called in for an appointment, two different staff did not know the prices. That they didn't inform me or was aware that they trimmed her nails too short and just gave her to us bleeding (getting the blood all over her leg). This was the first time I've seen they trim a dog's dewclaw (nail high on the leg). Won't go back there, especially to the grooming section. read more

It was my first time in this Petco because me and my other half have just become new parents to a 6 week old puppy so we needed a few things, everyone in the store was more than helpful and friendly every single employee stopped to pet our baby Zeus. The reason I am giving this place a 4 star and not a 5 is because of the price everything is so pricey we left the store with nothing more than a few items but paid over 200 bucks. Being a new pet owner that was a big shock for me. Many of my friends who are also pet owners have recommended Calvin & Susie and all have said the price difference between Petco and Calvin's are crazy, but Petco I will definitely be back. Pros: Well stocked. Friendly staff with the following exceptions noted at the bottom of review. Cons: Had signs for an advertised special but register did not ring up the product correctly. Could not find a staff person on the sales floor to help with a question. Had to find product myself which was kept in a separate case because it was $87. When I tried to purchase a product, we discovered that there was no price tag on it. Staff expected me to go grab it on the floor myself (annoying but not completely unheard of). When I said I wanted the one that had the sales tag still on (as the one I had originally brought up was actually the store demo) staff member was notably annoyed with me, tried to give me the store demo instead and then argued that I had a receipt and it was easier for her to keep the one with the tag. The staff member then proceeded to have a scowl on her face while finishing the transaction making the situation super awkward. Items purchased : 5 Total spent: $237.13 - 26.20 in instant rebates. Stars : 3 for being well stocked, a fairly friendly staff with noted exception, and convenient location. Disappointed with last customer service experience. I'd actually do 4.5 stars but eh...gotta do what ya can ya? I love to take my dog here after we go on a hike. He loves it also. I think there needs to be more stores where you can bring your pet in with you. The staff here have always been helpful and I actually bought my citronella spray collar for my dog here. It actually stopped his barking! It was more then I could have gotten it for on the interwebz, but it was immediate so it was needed. The staff love to pet my dog, give him treats and are generally friendly. There is a tall, skinny haole guy who is a cashier often who seems to be bouncing off the walls with energy and remembers my family well. Final thing, they carry a bunch of grain free dog foods. I don't feed my dog wheat, corn or rice generally and its been a great place to get a variety of grain free foods for him there. read more

Whenever we're in the shopping center with Stella and Zoe they try to herd us into Petco. Who can blame them, whenever they are there, everyone loves on them and gives them treats, they feel like they are stars of the show - which is about right, they're quite spoiled. We've taken them both there multiple times for grooming and I've been delighted every time. It's reasonable and they take good care of our babies and they look so pretty when we pick them up. I joined their frequent shopper program because there are always toys on sale...and I can never resist letting them pick one out. So if you go, bring your pooch, let them pick out a toy and go to the groomers. Everyone will be happy - including you. read more

The staff here were so nice and very knowledgeable. The person who helped me knew a lot about the mice and what I would need. I had a problem with one of the cages (not their fault), and the manager was so apologetic. The bar spacing of the cage, that was advertised for mice, was too large and the mice got out. The manager gave me a full refund without the box or anything. I was able to find a cage with smaller bar spacing. I appreciated the sincere service. read more

Endless aisles of goodies for my doggy! There are also guinea pigs, birds, and tons of food and supplies for all types of pets. It is a newly opened store, so it was pretty crowded during my visit (so, there were not many staff members available for assistance, but I'm sure this will clear up as the "new store hype" dies down.) Parking can be kind of a pain during Koko Marina's peak hours, you'll find something, but it may be a little bit of a walk. Why not 5-stars? I'd rather support the local pet stores! :) read more

Never thought I'd be "posting" a FISH post, BUT. ..here goes. We moved to HK 3 yrs ago from "town." (That cracks me up..all of 20 mins away!) We're eally fron mainland, almost 4 yrs ago! *anyway, our son won a few guppies at his school's Kamiloiki Carnival. (Yippeee.?) So that got him hooked. At the time, we had a German Shepherd too. His true love. (Choto left us on 10/27) .;-( doggie heaven for him . Sniff sniff So NOW, he's ALL ABT FISH! Thank Goodness FOR ANDREW, the "fish guy," as Babi calls him . He is so knowledgeable about fish! "Who should go with WHOM: who wld EAT WHOM; who is a girl, who is a boy; what type of fish food to purchase; WHERE THEY CAME FROM ( in the world! ). We went from a fish BOWL TO A 16 GALLON TANK! ALL with the help from ANDREW! Soooo. If you're *forced into fish parentood,* and you live on OAHU, YOU MUST GO TO Petco in HK and ask for Andrew. He's a tall, skinny guy. Very friendly. And if you have fish who NIP at other fish OR EAT OTHER FISH, Petco is very good about "taking them back." May replace them with other (non violent) fish. Made an appointment for grooming my dog today and 4-1/2 hours later my dog was not groomed, only washed. The groomer said my dog was afraid of the blow dryer and that is why his haircut would take another hour or more. Our former groomer used a blow dryer, so that excuse is lame. Then he said that he had a lot of dogs to groom today. But I was told 4 hours completion time. My dog seemed traumatized when I picked him up so I suspect he was crated a lot of the time and not even given a bathroom break outside. Terrible customer service. Do not recommend at all. read more

Dropped off Roscoe to the groomers earlier today and I am so happy with the results! Roscoe is such a hard dog to groom (he bites and freaks out when anyone goes near his paws) and they were able to "baby talk" him the whole time and give him this adorable hair cut. He was very matted and his hair was uneven due to a bad hair cut prior but now he's all fluffy and cute! The hair cut is a bit pricey but since I didn't have to do it, it was worth it! Customer Service issue: I observed John and Michael openly disparaging a customer after she left the store. They had some sort of altercation and she left unhappy. I witnessed it while paying for my purchase and it upset me too. Unprofessional and uncalled for. I was so upset that I talked to the customer that left outside. I then returned to the store to speak to both John and Michael. Unbelievable. They saw nothing wrong with calling the lady rude etc. I told them to take those conversations to the back room. Nothing needs to be aired in public. John apologized and said it would not happen again while Michael had no idea why I thought their exchange was inappropriate. I honestly believe even though John apologized, he did it more to get rid of me:). In the end- I wanted to return my purchase as I no longer wanted to support this store. Due to COVID-19 no returns. Don't waste your time shopping here. read more

Our groomer Tanner at Petco Hawaii Kai did a fantastic job grooming our dog. He was very patient and thorough. Strongly recommend.

The store where pets go, literally. You get to bring your pet in with you which is fun. PETCO has an amazing selection of pet toys, food, accessories, snacks, etc. Awesome selection but kind of ridiculous prices. Everything here is so expensive. I would highly suggest going on Amazon, because you can find the same items for way less. For instance, I found the furminator for less than half the price online. The only thing I find reasonable here are the PETCO brand goods, namely the candy cane raw hide. We got this giant raw hide for $12 (regular price $17). Last year this raw hide lasted our time share do 5 months before the last bits disappeared. I wouldn't suggest the raw hide bow, it seems big but didn't hold up as well. Rusty ate half in less than a week. read more

Friendly staff and the store is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. Our 2yo Dobe never fusses when going for a wash and nail trim from the groomers and we've never been disappointed in their service. read more

This Petco's customer service is not the warmest. I prefer the customer service at the Beretania location, they're very helpful and friendly. At Hawaii Kai, some workers are grouchy and I get this vibe like they don't want to be here. read more
