Wow! The staff there couldn't care less and will walk right by you while asking them something. The staff is so inept that they had to get rid of most of their live animals because the losers that work there weren't taking care of them. It was pretty said when they were there because the cages were filled with feces that looked like it hadn't been cleaned up in weeks. They got me crickets once and the loser working the counter had to power trip with the only power she probably ever had and charged me for more than they gave me. I recently revisited this Petco, and it seems like they've turned things around. I stopped by after work on a Thursday and there were at least 4 people I saw working there. One man checked on me while I was shopping and then offered to carry the 20 lb. bag of dog food I wanted to purchase up to the counter. Then, the woman who checked me out was very friendly and accomdating. I'm not sure if there have been some new hires, or I just got lucky and came when the friendlier employees were working. This easily is my favorite petco. I always leave this place in a good mood. I drop in from time to time to purchase the basics and usually never have a problem finding the necessities. However this evening I couldn't find my dogs freeze dried treats. Just as I was giving up, the upbeat (and very attractive) sales person Cat jogged by and asked if I needed assistance. There weren't any on the sales floor so she checked the backroom and came out with several packages. At the register I was rung by Darryl who was just as friendly. I'm not sure how I spent so much money this evening but customer service here is top notch and my boxer is content this place is way better than the rude Santa Monica location I used to shop at regularly. read more

Stopped in to this Petco location to get a few fresh water fish to go with my sons Beta fish. I visited on two different occasions and was helped by Matthew and Alex. This is a poorly managed, poorly staffed, and poorly run grooming service. Avoid it at all costs! The staff do not know how to properly groom your dog, they do not listen to what you want, and they do not know how to charge the customers. We brought our shih tzu here on 2/7/09 for a bath of his backside only. The groomer, Sandra, shaved our dog on his belly, and we didn't ask him to be shaved. He is now in major pain, he keeps whimpering, he won't walk/is having trouble going to the bathroom, and is not sleeping well. When we reported this the following day -- the store manager and the other groomers all told us that several people have been complaining about the groomer, but they are keeping her on, since they are short staffed. I came here on Christmas Eve to get a last minute gift for my pup. Not only were they open until 7pm on Christmas Eve - how nice :) But the staff was friendly and helpful. The nice young lady that helped me had immediate suggestions for low protein treats, and she helped me to get in and out quickly. I was very happy with my experience - but this is not unique. I have been coming here with my dog for many years - even got my dog groomed a few times at their grooming salon (which requires a certain degree of trust) - and I have always been happy with my experience here. read more

Probably my favorite Petco in LA, this store is great in more ways than one. I usually go there for fish supplies, especially saltwater, and the employees usually get me what I want. Their prices for livestock are pretty decent, and they usually have a good selection. My one concern is that sometimes I will spot what appear to be dead or dying fish on the substrate, which is never good for business. But other than that, it is a great store. read more

Looking for a snake not knowing what to look for and what to buy I came across a worker named Gabriel who was nice and very helpful. He told us everything we needed to know about snakes and all the different behaviors. After choosing the snake he made picking a terrarium very easy. Showing us the best things to buy for the snake and value. After we were ready to take the snake home and check out we were informed with so so many helpful things to do and cool things to know about the snake. My experience seems quite different from many of the reviews here. I have been coming to this location for over a year, at least once a month (a dog, 2 cats and, until recently, a turtle). The staff is unfailingly friendly and helpful to me. They greet me with a "welcome to Petco" every time I enter, ask if they can help me find anything and are generally of the very positive disposition that you hope for at any establishment you patronize. I usually deal with either Jackie or Patricia and they are both great people. If I had any complaint about the store it would be that the prices are a bit high, but they have what I want. PETCO GROOMING -- I try to NOT write awful reviews about Petco but this location has upset me more than a few times now so I decided to warn some doggie moms and dads about this Westwood Petco Grooming. 1. The Petco grooming cut off my dog's ear fur when i told them I want my Pekignese's ear fur long and was still growing it out more -- they cut off his ear fur completely. 2. I was totally upset and should never have gone back but months later, under new management, I did and I dropped my small dog off for a bath and toothbrush. When I picked him up that day after running errands, the grooming department was mad at me because supposedly i returned to get him later than I was supposed to -- and they told me they would start charging me boarding fees -- if I did not pick him up as soon as his bath/haircut were done. This was super upsetting to me and probably just another way for them to rip me off - by charging boarding fees - because they never do tell me when my dog will be ready for pickup when I drop him off- normally it does take all day and most grooming places ask us to get the dogs later in the day anyway. So, I probably like most people, have other things to do while my dog is being groomed, and the groomers call me later when he is done to come pick up my dog. In the habit of doing this now Petco wants to charge me boarding fees. If I do not sit there and wait for him to be done ... if i leave and they happen to finish him and I am not there as soon as he is done they will charge me boarding fees the manager of the Westwood Petco Grooming told me "next time I do not pick up my little dog as soon as he is done they will charge me boarding fees" ... how can they charge a boarding fee if the dog is NOT even staying the night and the dog is there for grooming services .. not for boarding in the first place. This was so messed up - I cannot even say how awful it was to hear this from a place that i am trusting my little dog to for the day. It was the coldest most uncaring and greedy grooming place I have ever been to. So now this Petco Westwood grooming has chopped off all my dogs ear fur and threatened to charge me boarding fees when I had trusted them and went back to groom my dog ... instead of being thankful for my business and kind and considerate to me and my little dog. It is not that they are worried about my dog ... they are trying to get more $$. We will never ever never ever never ever go there again ... NOPE !!! BYE !!! read more

I just recently came in with my boyfriend we had just rescued a pitbull named Casie. We were greeted at thet door by Pierre. He toured us around the whole store helping us with our every needs, He recommended us a good brand of Canadate Dog food, treats, to a no pull harness, and even dog traning. He also explained that he also has a pitbull of his own... So we definitely fealt comfortable with all his ideas. Our dog loves the food and the treats. We recently bought a Guinea Pig at Petco, Westwood. Our helper was Gabriel. The whole experience couldn't have been better. The advice, attitude, and professionalism shown by Gabriel was second to none. We now have two healthy and adorable Guinea Pigs. I had an appointment with the groomers today. Vanessa; who is the General Manager ( so she said) sent a text 3 hours before my appointment, stating she had to cancel my appointment. When i replied, there was no response. I called to get an explanation. One of her workers stated they'd be happy to reschedule ant offered a 30% discount for the inconvenience. Vanessa got on the phone and did not apologize for the inconvenience. She made me wait on the phone for 5 minutes; When she got on the phone she said " we don't have anything until Tuesday. I'll be more than happy to schedule you then" I explained it was an inconvenience and i was told there will be a percentage off. She refused to give me the discount after i insisted and hung up on me. Petco please learn to pick better managers, with customer service experience. We've had our puppy for about a year and since we live a few blocks from PetCo it was very easy for us to do all of our shopping there. We used to take him somewhere else for grooming which was a little over priced ($70) but they did an amazing job, but since PetCo was close to us we decided to take him there. He's an 11lb. white maltipoo and we like to keep his hair long. The first time I took him there I was very disappointed with what they did to him, they gave him a very short hair cut and cut his tail off after I specifically said that I wanted his hair long and do not want his tail cut. I spoke with the manager, he apologized and he told me next time he'll do his hair cut. So today I took him in and Rudy the manager did his hair cut...oh what a mistake that was!! He has absolutely no hair left! He looks like a 5lb chihuahua now. To top it off, they charged me $91!!!! They didn't brush his hair they shaved it off and charged me $91! I am never going to take my dog there again! I can't even explain how upset I am with them especially since the manager was the one who was doing his hair cut and its even worse than the first time. When I called to complain to the store manager she said too bad you signed the paper that said we could shave him and hung up on me, so rude!! DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING AT PETCO!! NO MATTER WHAT THEY TELL YOU, DON'T SIGN IT! My dog has been hiding under the bed for 2 days now, I'm sure they probably abused him or something, he's terrified to come out. I live just across the street and recently adopted a puppy, needless to say that we go there often. I approached the a sales associate for more information on dog training, since my little guy has taken to barking at EVERY dog in the neighborhood and I am not sure how to help him. They were having a discount on the puppy training package, I was very happy. I asked the associate for information, to which he informed me that the trainer would need to call me. I gladly provided my phone number and left. I returned a few days later after not receiving a call back, only to be told that the trainer was still not there and the sale was over. I asked to speak to a manger, she was to busy to talk to me. I provided my phone number again and have never received a call back. I was so disappointed and shocked that they would throw away the opportunity to sell a training package, those babies aren't exactly cheap. read more

This review centers more upon the agency that Petco uses for dogs placed for adoption. Karma Rescue. It's very nice that there are agencies that want to rescue animals, however, there has to be consideration of where the dogs go and with whom. Yesterday, one of the Karma Rescue Pitbulls attacked and mangled the leg on my dog. The woman with the dog I had witnessed previously being dragged along the gravel by this same dog and minutes before the attack he had broken his training collar (the big spiked one) and immediately attacked my dog. Under threat of civil litigation Karma reimbursed the medical bills for my dog. HOWEVER, they questioned the vet regarding why he had gotten a couple of blood tests on my dog. Lets see now if one of their pitbulls injures a child. There is a reason that these dogs were taken out of other homes. If they want to save all these potentially harmful dogs, let them buy a large fenced in farm. Don't give the dogs to people who are incapable of handling them in a safe manner. read more

This Petco is terrible. We've had our dog groomed there several times and each time they look awful! It seems that the groomers are beauty school dropouts who have NO idea how to groom an animal nor care about their comfort. It is not clean and the service is bad too. There used to be some good groomers, but obviously management has chased them away. There are lots of other groomers to choose from in the area. Try Petsmart or Judy's Pet Depot- both have great groomers who treat our pets like they should be treated!! read more

Overpriced, unprofessional, and untidy. I purchased the essentials for my new kitty and the total was abt 200 big ones. I didn't blindly spend, too. I actually sought out sale items and the cheapest cat food they offer. Nevertheless, it still put a dent in my poor starving student pocketbook. :( I only went here because it was close and have learned my lesson. I'll be sure to choose a better shop on my next run. They also overcharged me for a few items that were on sale. I didn't go back to complain becasue I'm way too lazy to drive back for a few dollars, but geez, what a rip off. REVIEW FOR AQUATICS SPECIALISTS/SECTION The aquatics specialists here are really smart, experienced and most importantly super ethical. I actually really trust these guys, and will continue shopping at this Petco for as long as they are running it. I have a 40gal planted tank with shrimp, and peaceful community fish and came here for a few plants, danios, and shrimp. My encounters with the aquatics specialists have made this my favorite local fish store--which really surprised me because I had low expectations of Petco coming into this. At first I was really nervous about buying anything living from Petco, because I know how big corporate stores like this are--they are run by a distant department of business professionals that don't know anything about the animals in the stores they stock. After several encounters with their aquatics specialists, I actually feel good about coming here to buy in the future. See below: 1. Aquatics specialists Alex, Matt, and Melissa were all very well informed, polite, and most importantly--ethical. It's Persian new year right now, so a lot of people are coming in for goldfish to put in a bowl (something about persian traditions, I don't know much about it). But as I was waiting for them to help me, I overheard their polite, yet firm attempts to explain why tiny little bowls were not good enough for fish, that the animals needed proper air, filtration, cycling etc. These people were just looking for goldfish to keep as ornaments for their new years celebrations until they inevitably died in a few weeks, and didn't care about keeping the fish alive past that in the slightest. They would look to the fancy goldfish and even the Koi--but the aquatics specialists insisted on feeder fish instead, explaining that Koi live for 100 years--and selling them to someone without a proper set up for them would be cruel. One woman bought 4 feeder fish, and a few days later, I saw the same woman asking if she could exchange the dead fish for new feeder fish. It kinda disgusted me. She didn't even see any of these fish as living things. 2. Melissa gave me great tips about incoming BLUE ICE shrimp (extremely rare)--and I managed to buy all of their supply when it came in. Their shrimp are just as high quality as those you'd find at the Nature Aquarium, but half the price. They have nice plants in most of the time as well, all much cheaper than places like the Nature Aquarium. 3. Alex also gave me a super helpful breakdown of how snails work in a planted tank--pros and cons. I ended up not buying a snail because of it--you can trust these guys, they aren't trying to just sell shit to unsuspecting noobs. 4. Matt gave me a super interesting background on zebra danios, and how they breed--he was really sweet and knowledgeable! Love this place now. read more

Fish/Aquariums: This store has a good selection of aquairium decor, equipment & other supplies. I bought 5 neon tetra and within one day 3 had died. The remaining 2 tetras have survived for the last few months. The survivors are the black neons, the dead ones - 1 orange, and 2 of the blue/green ones. I've bought 3 aquariums. 1 that they had growing in their water tank died pretty quickly. 1 that came in the tube has survived well. The 3rd plant I just planted so we will see. Overall probably not the best quality for live things, but very good for supplies. read more
