I used to be a loyal Petsmart shopper until I started volunteering for a rescue group in the Richmond area. We hold weekly adoption stands and have done so at many Petsmart and Petco locations. We no longer hold adoption stands at Petsmart locations because of the experience with Petco has been so great and I have to say the staff at this Petco location has been amazing! The staff has been extremely helpful and accommodating. Managers have donated so much to the rescue group and are always willing to help. The store is clean and well organized. The product selection is amazing compared to Petsmart and the prices are right in line with other retailers. read more

My family is getting a fish tank for our young boys. I called Petco to get some general helpful information. I was lucky enough to speak with Donovan who was amazing. He took the time to speak with me about not only the best kinds of beginner fish to get but also about setting up the fish tank in advance and the mi they water change, etc. he was so knowledgeable and reassuring! I came in with my 2 boys to buy fish for out 3 tanks. No one greeted us they acknowledge us by looking at us in our eyes and looking away. And following us with there eyes but did not ask if we needed help. My children and I did not feel comfortable and that they didnt want our business. Rude workers here. I was stuck in traffic getting there and arrived 13 minutes late. She refused to take my dog and said I had to reschedule. I asked if they can just skip the blow dry to make you for the few minutes and she said no. There was not any other dog in there and it was only noon - not like the end of the day. I would not recommend going to the location On Hull street. We took one of our 2 dogs there about a month ago. I wasnot happy with the way they cut my dogs ears. I received a survey from Petco about 2 days after her appt and I filled it out how I felt about the visit. The Manager called me the next day after I sent the survey in to give me a hard time and said not to bring my dog back to her store for grooming and go to another store. I called another Petco a little further from my house where I had gone before and they had done a good job for an appt for my other dog only to be told the Manager from the Hull Street store out a note to all their store not to groom either of my dogs. A poor way for Petco to treat their customers Apparently after they send you a survey abs it is negative, they allow their people to call you about the negative comments and let them block you from their other stores when the issue is only about 1 if their employees. i wouldn't recommend them. read more

I had an issue recently with one of my two dogs i took to this location for grooming. One of my dogs they usually always did a good job on the grooming. My smaller dog i have had an issue recently and one time before. This time they shaved her ears because they said they were matted. One ear had a little matting but didn't need shaved in my opinion. I received a survey after the grooming and i commented i wasn't happy and the reason. i received a call from the grooming manage at this store and she basically chewed me out about my survey and said i needed to take my dog to another groomer. I called a different Petco store this morning and tried making an appointment for my other dog and was told by the store i was referred out for both dogs, meaning go find another groomer not Petco. i had called Petco after the issue with the manager chewing me out and was told they would take care of it and they were sorry the way i was talked to. i would not recommend Petco grooming based on the way they treated me. Don't send surveys if you don't want honest responses. A bad way to do business. I am sure Petsmart doesn't treat their customers this way read more

My mother was trying to buy a ferret for a class pet for Baxter elementary... Went in last week, held one, went in today trying to finalize it and the manager Alyssa tells us that "by policy" you can not hold the animals. You're telling me i'm going to buy a $350 animal and not be able to hold it before?! Ridiculous. Alyssa was very rude, and rolled her eyes as we walked out. Took my docile puppy for grooming. The groomer was abrasive from the start but I left the dog with her bc I thought maybe she just likes animals more than people. She called me 15 minutes later claiming that my dog tried to bite her, I needed to pick her up, AND my dog is now banned from ALL Petco stores. When I picked up my dog she was shaking and scared. I don't know what this girl did to my dog, but she scared her to death and I do not believe for a second that my dog tried to bite her. This is an 8 lb dog that is terrified of our new kitten. IF the dog snapped it's because she was treated roughly or was frightened. BUT this dog has never even growled at a person or animal... Don't trust these people and definitely trust your gut if they are giving off bad vibes. read more

I came into this particular location for my sweet furry friends. They really are my family so I want to provide the best for them. I have come to Petco in search of toys, food and other needs for them with little as I have walked out. For my particular pets, this store is quite limited on their needs. If you have a dog, cat or fish, however, you are in luck. But, for the smaller furry family friends, you may want to travel up the street to PetSmart. The prices at this store seem to be a bit higher than their competition and their staff are quite pushy on the charities they support. I give to the local animal shelters in my area and even volunteer, however, the last time I went to snag up some goodies for my pets, the cashier offered the opportunity for me to contribute to their charity. I declined and he stated 'all animals are in need this time of year' and continued to comment on their charity. What he did not know is that I recently had given away a great deal of items to my local animal shelter for the holidays. I understand they have charities and Next time, I will spend the extra few minutes to travel down the street to Petsmart for my pets needs- they have more items to fit my smaller animals needs and they have better prices than Petco. I would not mind giving Petco another try- but not for the next few purchases. read more

Stopped in today after my dogs vet appointment to change his diet as recommended and my husband and I spoke with Kaycie about certain foods we should or shouldn't try. She was very knowledgeable in many of the brands offered and she helped us so much with finding the perfect food for our pet! I feel as though she taught us more about why certain foods were better then others then the actual vet! Would recommend to everyone to go see her at petco for help if you find yourself wondering what food you should get for your dog! read more

Giving this place a 3-star rating because the service is great, but did not get what I asked for and was promised. We brought our baby here for a trim. The guy (Colin) behind the counter showed us a sample template and we agreed upon leaving an inch on our puppy. When we went to pick him up, his body was shaved like a sheep just got sheared and his legs were not even touched. Pissed off, we did grumble and Mary asked us to bring him back the next day and she would fix it. Mary did what she promised and fixed our baby to make everything even and spent a lot of time with him to clear out some matted areas. If we go back, only Mary will touch this puppy from now on. read more

I requested a puppy cut on our 5 month old cocker spaniel. She was there for over 4 hours and it did not appear that anything was done to her other than a bath. The manager said that she did a face, feet and fanny; only her feet were done. Her face and bottom were untouched. This for a cost of $41. I will not be going there again. read more

For the safety of your pet, you should not attend this store. One of the groomers, Jess, stole our family's dog. She refused to tell us what she did with him even after the police were involved. We finally got him back after two days of torture for my family. Jess left the dog untreated for his ringworm and we got him back starving. The manager knows all of this, sad to see she is still employed there. Someone that disturbed shouldn't be allowed anywhere near animals. read more

He's raw and scratched up on his belly and his armpits and inner thighs. He's constantly licking and scratching those areas...this seems abnormal and not worth grooming if this is what he has to endure.. read more

After our regular groomer retired due to health reasons, we took our 5-year-old Maltese to Amber for grooming. Usually our dog is very anxious and skittish when meeting new people, especially when getting groomed. From the moment Amber took him, he immediately calmed down and was very cooperative. She complimented on how well behaved and calm he was. We'd NEVER had him act that wonderfully before. AMBER IS AWESOME!!!! We have definitely found our new groomer! AWFUL SERVICE!!! DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE FOR GROOMING!!! My puppy was shaved down completely, no fur!! He has nicks and cuts on his belly. In addition to the awfulness of the grooming, the General Manager "Joe Probst" was beyond unprofessional & sarcastic. I reached out to him because I noticed that my puppy was missing his Seresto Flea & Tick collar ($60!!) that was literally just purchased last month. He first made mention that the grooming associates are not supposed to keep the collars they are suppose to give it to the pet owner upon drop off.. that did not happen! He then claims to check the grooming salon & finds a collar that is allegedly my puppy's. I explained that I did not feel comfortable coming back to get a random collar that was found in the grooming salon. I expressed that I would like for the collar to replaced! As their associate did not follow policy & procedure & that alone was an inconvenience. He was very rude & refused to honor my request. He sarcastically made comments about it being just a simple thing. I would never step foot into this Petco again!! I can't believe someone who lacks so much sense of empathy & understanding is a General Manager. I have called corporate with my complaint with hopes that my concerns will be acknowledged. read more

I spent time looking for the items online, paying for them, then driving up there, going in...waiting for the guy to get the key, THEN he must verify my ID, THEN scan something else. It would have been faster to drive up there, get the items, check out, and come home! The process is flawed. read more

The staff at this Petco are very animal oriented people. Their manager Tommy helped Happe Dog Rescue & Adoption keep a dog from being dumped at the shelter by agreeing to foster Ash. Kelly, the trainer, agreed to pitch in and help with his training. Ben & Gordon were a great support team. This is a great location. read more

Groomer Jess Canter at this Petco stole our family dog and lied to the police about his whereabouts. We finally got him back - filthy, starving, and abused. This cruel and heartless treatment of an innocent animal, and the deliberate torture of us, his family, shows behavior that is disturbing and psychotic. Store manager has been informed. read more

At this location: 13329 Rittenhouse Dr, Midlothian, VA, in the evening of Friday, September 6th, a friend and I were rudely assisted by an employee named Kelly. She had blonde hair and was wearing a dog trainer shirt. My friend simply asked her a question about the proper feeding of a pacman frog and a tarantula. He recently received these pets from a family member who passed away and according to Kelly, was very misinformed about proper feeding care. I understand that she was concerned about the well being of the animals and blatantly informed him how much they should be eating and how often, but she was VERY rude and disrespectful and answered his question with sass and attitude and made him feel awful. No matter what bad occurrences may have happened with her earlier in the day- no customer should be treated the way he was. The situation was very poorly handled and she in no way acted as if she wanted to assist him or answer his questions. Before he had the chance to clarify the information she was spitting out to him so disgustingly, she walked away! She obviously wanted nothing to do with him and should not be working in customer service if she has no respect for customers. NO MATTER WHAT, your employees should be treating ALL customers with respect and courtesy and should NEVER act the way Kelly did. If she had an issue or did not think she could handle what he was asking, maybe a manager could have helped. I am very displeased and overall disappointed with my visit! read more

If I could give a negative star rating, I would. Absolutely worst place ever. I have an older dog who I know needs extra patience and time to be properly groomed. The last several visits have been progressively worse: shabby haircuts, getting infested with fleas, and most recently, being returned to me after having only his body shaved because his groomer determined "he was too old and timid". When I went to pick him up, he looked awful (completely embarrassed to have him leave looking like that) and I was sure to let the staff know we would never be returning there because clearly, they were unequipped to service my pet. Without letting me know, They entered a note in his file to always turn him away because of his age and now I cannot get him scheduled at ANY Petco. If you have a pet that needs more TLC, this Petco in particular IS NOT where you want to take him. Totally a revolving door of awful girls staffing this place. Save your money. read more
