This place is more than a Pet Store, its an experience. I walked in with my 2 small children and walked out over an hour later. If you asked my kids at this point whether they'd rather go to the Zoo or Petco - hands-down Petco. Between Robert the Manager and Kala another animal expert, they literally enriched my children and myself beyond words. We interacted with small animals, learned sensitivity toward animals and saw a side of animals that creates an awareness about their place on this beautiful planet. This shop is clean and the clerks friendly. This store is huge!! There is a massive range of items for all your animals! They have an adorable bulk doggy cookie section at the check out! Grab a special treat for your pooch's birthday or something: I bought an adorable pink frosted one shaped like an ice cream cone for a new little puppy our friends just got. They have a nice selection of fish, reptiles and birds, plus an adoption center for cats too. Grooming and even pet furniture like scratching posts and puppy beds. read more

We have been coming here since we adopted our dog in May. We are part of the PetCoach membership which originally was wonderful. We came in for a self wash an hour before closing and were told that they were already closing the tubs and that we wouldn't be able to do a self wash,previously it was last wash was 30 minutes before closing. It seems to be it depends on who is working what rules apply. While at first we were happy with the quality and services all of these changes and inconsistencies continue to be frustrating and we will no longer be recommending this establishment to our family and friends. I believe with all the negative changes that have been made in the last two months they will continue to lose customers. read more

Well, it's 3:30 in the afternoon and my Schnoodle has been at Petco since 10:30 this morning. I just called and was told they need more time because he's "so matted." How are they just now figuring out that my dog has some matted spots? I told them that this morning when I dropped him off. Five hours later they are just getting to clipping him? I've bathed him in 20 minutes and my neighbor's daughter has shaved him in 15 (matted hair included). Why have they had my dog for five hours and counting? Brushing him is like trying to pull a baby comb through an afro--which is why I try to keep him clipped. The last time I had him shaved by the neighbor's daughter, she had him completely clipped in 15 minutes--no fuss, no muss, no hyper-inflated grooming fee. Something is rotten in Petco Grooming.... After nearly six hours, I got my dog back. He looked cute, but I just don't see a six hour grooming. In my opinion, if you make an appointment for a grooming--you should not be getting your animal back six hours later. We had plans today at 2;00--plenty of time for a grooming. Instead, I had to cancel my plans and remain tethered to my house, waiting to get my dog back. Not cool, Petco. read more

This review is for the grooming department only. Petco is a more than reasonable store to purchase your pet products from. Their grooming department on the other hand... NOT GOOD! Don't take your pet here. Picked up my dog today after being groomed because we decided to give petco poway a 2nd shot. We originally took our dog here when he was a puppy and had not been back until today. We had a noon appointment for our dog to be bathed and groomed and was not finished for over 6 hours! We were originally told he would be all finished up by 3pm and we were unable to pick him up until 6pm leaving him in a crate the entire time. upon arrival they claimed he was missing shots. We found this especially strange since he had all of his vaccination done at this particular petco and refused to honor their appointment. After a great deal of explanation, they finally realized that we could just bring in his paperwork, which we happily did and still were given grief for. In addition to the poor time management. -He came home with a bleeding nail -completely uneven cut with lumps of hair missed -they did not cut around and in between his paws. When time came to pay they tried a-la-carte 'ing on services that we didn't ask for and attempting to charge for it. Overall, highly dissatisfied and will never take my dog back there again. read more

When the store opened it was awesome! The staff was happy and excited the membership was awesome!! Now it's hard to get service or find someone that is knowledgeable in pet care. As everyone felt the need to tell me how they were loosing money on the pet wash - I dint find myself going into the store much. When I was in for a wash I always walked out with some new treat, chewy, or pet gadget. Now it's easier to go across the street to Kahoots and receive friendly customer service. read more

I have taken my two chubby pugs to no less than six different Petco's in San Diego for grooming and I have finally found one that exceeded every hope I had! From the grooming department employee who placed my appointment time a few weeks ago to the super-sweet groomer (who offered to give my boys special shampoo for no extra charge) and the fabulous assistant who chatted me up about his black pug while he printed my bill, this place was awesome. The store is huge, clean and more new and organized than any other Petco I have been to in San Diego and every employee I came in contact with seemed more than happy to help. And my two chubby pugs? They didn't complain one bit. In fact, George seemed to be in a better mood after getting a bath and his nails clipped. They are both shiny and clean, and their fur is super-soft thanks to that oatmeal bath the groomer threw in for no extra charge. Poway may be far from my house, but leaving my beloved pugs at a place where I know they'll be treated well makes all the difference in the world. We'll be back, for sure. read more

He was seen March 8th for regular grooming ( not usual location) He now has staph, strep skin infection, waiting on blood work. Ha UTI also. The retail section of this store is great. This location of Petco is waaaay better in terms of selection and stock than the other nearby Petcos. I always get great service and advice on the floor when needed. The groomers here are also a lot more professional and knowledgeable in their craft. The one complaint I have about Petco is how they schedule their grooming appointments. I've come here a few times for grooming because they had offered a good price for their service but their prices have gone way up and the scheduling is awful. When I make an appointment I expect to be serviced at least sometime near the appointment time. I don't pay you guys $70 to crate my dog for the whole day and in turn take 6 hours to do the grooming. If you can't get to the dog in a reasonable amount of time then you shouldn't book the appointment. This complaint is probably geared more towards management as opposed to the groomers themselves. Like I said, the grooming always comes out great, but someone at petco needs to double check their system. read more

I have used this place in the past with decent results. The last time I took my dog there Mike was the groomer and it will be just that....the "last time." The haircut done to my yorkie-maltese was terrible and uneven. I asked for his feet to be clean shaven and they were not. When I expressed my displeasure with the service I was told "thats the best we can do." it should be noted it was 20 minutes till closing time and both groomers on staff were cutting other dogs. Another gal was there asking if her dogs were done yet and she was told they needed another 45 minutes. Knowing the place closed in 20 minutes makes it clear they had overbooked that day and were just speeding through the groomings with more regard to time than quality. Not at all happy, and will not return. read more

My review is for the pet hospital, which by far none is the absolute best vet experience my babies have ever had ! And I have been honored to have had multiple,multiiple fur children over the years, with multiple vets. Currently,I have an 18 year young kitty, Trippy, who suddenly turned 180 degrees health wise from being a spunky, bossy, "love you under my terms"- "your my slave" rule the roost most handsome and adorable cat to being very, very ill. Dr Day and Dr Drelich have been absolutely amazing! So caring, understanding and have come up with reasonable options to help me provide him a comfortable life. I haven't had to reach that very difficult decision but I wanted them to know how incredibly thankful and appreciative Trippy and and I are. I've been to this location several times. All the employees have been very helpful and friendly, from helping us use the self-bath to helping me pick out supplies. I especially have to say that both Miguel and Dr. Baily in the vet office seemed very enthusiastic and genuinely enjoyed what they do. The wait was only about 10 minutes for the doctor to come in, and he made sure all my questions were answered. It seems like most of the negative reviews are from the grooming department. I cannot comment on that as I have not used the grooming. I have hit the "happy face" button as I exited the store on each occasion that I have been there. read more

Big store with a lot of options. The location is great and the staff is nice. I like bringing my dogs here so they can sniff around and meet other people/dogs. We buy our pet food here and some toys when they are on sale as they last ~3 minutes on average before their stuffing is pulled out. Where do I begin? Customer service is non-existent. I had a 5 PM appointment. I arrived a few minutes early. "You have to wait until your groomer gets back from lunch. We are not allowed to handle cats". Uh, by handle, you mean place their cages somewhere while they wait for the groomer? No. I don't wait on you. I am paying you. You wait on me. I walked out and attempted to cancel my membership. D'oh! No option to do that online. Emailed customer service. We'll see if they get back to us. The above is just an example of a long string of behavior at this place. We walk in, we're ignored, there's nowhere to wait. The employees are obviously underpaid and don't like their jobs. We asked about cat hair trimming. "You can't trim cat's hair". Uh, that's not true. Do yourself a favor: support local independently owned groomers and ditch this place. This is just corporate America for your pet. Huge profits for the company with underpaid workers. Good luck getting through on the phone when you call here as well. read more

First I'd like to start by saying that I don't normally patronize establishments like PetCo because I'd rather shop local and I don't care for their use of factory farming when it comes to their small pets such as birds and rodents (absolutely deplorable). Today though, I was in search of a specialty leash and thought they might have what I'm looking for. I haven't come into PetCoach since the transition from the regular Petco and I have to say I am super disappointed with the rude and uppity attitude of the staff. Very unwelcoming and uncomfortable place to be in. At least when it was a PetCo the staff were quite kind and lovely. I can assure you I'll never step foot in this place again. I'd would advise my fellow Poway residents to shop at the smaller family owned pet shops especially during this time or even the Kahoots across the way. read more

I would like to give a big big shout out to the vet Dr. Day. We rescued three kittens all sick and very underweight. Dr. Day and his staff were wonderful and helping us get one the right track. Abby (one of the kittens) became very very sick and Dr. Day n team jumped into action. Her body temperature was a lot lower then it should be. She was really struggling. They did everything they could for her. She has pneumonia and because she's under weight and weak as it is she might not make it. Or as dr. Day said, "we're not out of the woods just yet" they have done so much for her and with in a few hours Abby was making us all proud. I was looking for a reasonably priced Vet when a friend recommended Poway PetCoach. Not only did I find a wonderful and superior Vet in Dr. Day; his entire staff has been phenomenal! We love the convenience of having our Vet and retail store for all of Murphy's nutritional needs located under the same roof. Every employee that we have encountered has been nothing short of informative and professional... the crown jewel was in Meeting Amanda who has become Murphy's Groomer... she LOVES Amanda, and as a "Pet Parent", we all know how important it is to know our Fur Babies feel safe in the company of their caregivers. The woman who groomed my mini Schnauzer did a horrid job. She cut his eyebrows straight across, she scalped him on his private parts and put white cream on them. Did not even do his ears. No skirt. This Petco is fantastic! The staff are friendly and knowledge. The pricing is fair, but they will usually price match if you can provide proof of a lower price elsewhere. If you have dog questions, I recommend you ask for Joseph, but anyone will be helpful and provide an honest answer. Ernie is great overall, but today he spent at least 30 minutes explaining what I need for a new kitten. He showed me where everything was and told me the pros and cons, in detail, for each product. Clearly, Ernie is extremely knowledgeable in all the products!! I highly recommend him for any questions you might need answered. The guy is definitely a multi brand specialist!!! Another plus about Petco is they will take anything back, with or without a receipt. read more

I cannot say enough about how happy I am with Pet Coach. The staff is always friendly, the store is always clean, but most of all, we love their groomer, Amanda. My Lily is a 2 y/o poodle with 13lbs of poodletude. She's been sent home from other groomers, but Amanda has the golden touch (and she is able to put a bow in Lily's hair, which has been impossible for others). I ran in there panicking because I was petsitting for some dogs and a cat but the owners also have fish. One had already died on Saturday and I came home to find another face down in a corner but breathing. Having a fear of fish I told Lindsay I couldn't possibly change the water out. She gave me some treatments and I ran home to administer them. Half an hour later the fish is up and swimming! I'm so grateful and I hope it continues to improve :-) read more

Amazing and attentive care. Our (11-year-old) dog went in for a dental cleaning. They pulled 12 teeth for an extremely reasonable price. The doctors and staff were kind, thoughtful and professional. They brought us back our old boy in excellent health, and kept us notified throughout, giving us peace of mind through the whole process. Afterwards we went to speak to a food specialist who spoke to us for a long time and recommended specific products for our old dog who is now missing several teeth. Love this place!!! Knowledgeable and very friendly staff. They keep their store clean and have everything you would want for your pets (everything is displayed and sectioned out to make it easy to grab and go). Self grooming station is super convenient and I can't lie...pretty fun for my kiddos to get in there and help out. Unfortunately she moved to the Midwest last year but we still come to this store for other dog supplies and every staff member we've encountered has been helpful and friendly. We love everything about this place! We've been going as a family on Saturday mornings for dog training for a few months - first basic, then advanced- Kristin is a great teacher. Our kids love the free hot chocolate machine. The membership is reasonable and well worth it since it includes 5 vet visits, free monthly toy and discount on dog wash (which kids also enjoy), +. This review is just for the self wash. It is very close to being a 4 star, but unfortunately there are a couple (major for me) issues. They water down their shampoo to the point that I needed to use two large bottles on my golden, and still didnt get a good lather. The other issue is their dryers, they don't blow nearly hard enough on high, and low is completely useless. The first is easily. fixed, the second may be as well. Hopefully someone reads this and makes some changes as they are very convenient for me. read more

BAIT AND SWITCH. When they opened the Vet side a couple years back I was convinced to switch from our regular vet. Since then it has been steadily down hill. Still waiting on a call back for services that we wanted to have done. After 3 calls to ask to talk with Vet, I am done. For any business managers here who may be wondering why the store revenues are falling, look no further than how your store is being run now. Honestly, planned to spend over $1k on vet services but if I cant get a call back why would I trust them with our dog? Not the only gripe here, just seeing how this is steadily going into the toilet so we will be returning to our regular vet.
