How parrots, like cockatiels should be living. Not in captivity and not for profit.
    Kitty J.

I am simply shocked to see social, intelligent, amazing parrots callously confined in isolation in a sterile, miserable plastic container.... and betta fish (who do feel pain and suffer, as all animals do) in these incredibly small containers. Did you know that more fish die on the shelf and are thrown away than they even sell? I've spoken to many former Petco employees who have quit because of the immense animal suffering and death they had to deal with. They have to clean up the dozen and dozens of dead animals every morning. Do not support this animal-abusing company. Adopt from your local shelter instead, there are so many animals who need homes. I hope someday all Petcos will stop selling animals and only partner with rescues and shelters to host adoption events :)

Update: ordered pickup cat flea spray last night and arrived to store at 9:30. They open at 9. Within minutes I received an email that they are out of stock. So I came here for nothing and wasted time. The employee was completely unapologetic and even tried to upsell me on the food I was buying. Will be making formal complaint to corporate and will NOT be returning to this absolute dumpster fire of a franchise.

Freshly groomed dog with new toys

Went in looking for new toys and a bed for my puppy who is very particular in what they play with etc. Dominick was a great help! Couldn't have asked for more! He gave great suggestions on which toys might be best for my dog and helped guide me to the needed areas for items. Super friendly and really puts customers above all else :) also loved Valeria's grooming job!

Dewclaw wound still bleeding 4 days after injury
    Peining W.

Petco groomers cut off our dog's dewclaw, downplayed the incident, and did not reimburse medical expenses. On May 3, 2024, we brought our pup to Petco on 16th St for a full service grooming. A half hour later, we received a call to meet at Sage, an emergency veterinary service. One of the managers, Quinn greeted us. He explained that our dog was there due to uncontrollable bleeding; a skin tag was accidentally shaved off. I asked him if it was her dew claw that was clipped. Quinn replied no, it was a growth on her skin. The vet at Sage told us that our dog lost a lot of blood. Although we asked could it be a dewclaw, Sage also said it was a clipped skin tag. We were unable to see the wound immediately, as they wrapped up her leg. We were instructed to keep her bandage dry and to remove in 48 hours. Quinn said that Petco would cover any resulting expenses if needed. Our dog was uneasy for entire weekend. Later when we removed the bandage, the area was still oozing blood. We discovered that her dewclaw was indeed cutoff. A dewclaw is both nail and tendons. It's similar to a thumb for dogs. Proper removal requires general anesthesia. We were surprised that Petco and Sage denied it was her dewclaw. She was only bandaged and not given proper treatment such as pain killers. Our pup must have been in so much pain. We visited our regular vet on May 7, 2024. The wound was still bleeding. Our vet confirmed that the groomer cut her dewclaw. He prescribed pain killers and antibiotics, and advised us to air dry and not to wrap the wound. Two days later, I called Petco for reimbursement of medical expenses. I spoke with Christina, another manager at Petco. She said that for reimbursement, she has to use the company credit card. This was not mentioned earlier. I gave her the details for my vet for her to follow up. Over the next month, Christina and my vet played phone tag. I followed up a few more times with Christina by phone on through July. Petco should have stated up front that they only pay veterinary expenses via their company credit card. It is now August and clear to me that Petco is not reimbursing for injuries they created. Aside from cutting off my pup's dewclaw, which is in itself bad for a grooming service, they downplayed the severity and denied cutting off the claw. This led to insufficient veterinary treatment, where my dog was not provided with painkillers and antibiotics at the time they were most needed. It is clear that the folks at this Petco location are more concerned for their own welfare than the health or wellbeing of the animals. Naomi, the groomer, either lied or did not correct the fact that she clipped off a dewclaw. Surely, she would have noticed a half inch nail with tendon attached during the clean up process... Quinn, the manager who was adamant it was a skin-tag and not a dewclaw, did not get the story straight and influenced improper and incomplete vet care for our pup... Christina has been giving us the run around on reimbursement for months. No accountability at all. According to Quinn, injuries requiring vet assistance are regular weekly occurrences. Our dog was not herself for weeks following this incident. Stay clear of this Petco, if you love your pet. Update 8/22: Two days after this review, Petco reimbursed vet expenses.

Great location near downtown SF with large free parking. Pretty standard and complete selections of all pet supplies. Like their cat section - lots of choices of cat foods and furniture. Also saw some cute birds, hamsters, and a couple of chinchillas! They were cute and therapeutic to look at, even if you don't buy.

When it comes to our Fur Babies..Looking for a Grooming salon can be heartwarming..But when you found one...You'll Stick with that groomer as she knows how to take care of your Fur Buddy...Angelica of Petco Grooming on Potrero did it... My Buddy knows when he look at the Window and saw Petco. He would freeze...Upon Check-in Angelica took my buddy with care... She did a great job on cutting my Buddies Matted Hair... This is his Second Grooming with Angelica...

Grooming review only: Wanted to sing praises for Libra. My pup got a bath and brush with Libra before the holidays. She came back soooo cute and fresh. Libra was super patient with my anxious pup, was communicative about timing and service, and she is super professional. Go see/request Libra!

I went here today to get my 10lb puppy's chip put in. He still learning etiquette so I let them know he can be a little rowdy and I expected them to proceed with professionalism. However, they proceeded to hold him down by the neck and offered no words of reassurance or kindness to the puppy. It was aggressive and disrespectful. In the end they refused to provide service after my puppy started growling, as one would expect if you're getting held down by force. He's very easy to deal with for me and I would expect Petco employees to know how to handle dogs better than this.

My dog Fuji - images are of a couple bald spots out of many.

They could have just as easily run into the street without collars and been killed! I yelled out about the gate and the lady DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE DOGS WERE FOLLOWING HER. Then she carried one dog back to the other side and the other dog, again without a collar or leash just walked back onto the sidewalk and back to the other side again. They were lucky these two dogs were so well behaved but no matter how well behaved a dog is, they should ALWAYS be on leash when out on the sidewalk. Fortunately all the dogs are safe, but seeing this carelessness I would NEVER BRING MY DOG BACK HERE. If they are that careless with other peoples beloved animals they shouldn't even have a business. Do not trust them to protect your animal while in their care. ** edit in response to owner below: Well it seems other commenters have seen the same, including with their own dogs being off leash outside. So I highly doubt what you're saying is true. Either way, never bringing my dog here again and I'm going to continue to tell others the same. Lastly, if you let shops dogs outside off leash then you are still an irresponsible dog owner. Leashes are required by law for a reason. If you don't care enough about your own dogs to leash them outside, I don trust you with my dogs. You should be fined and your dogs taken before they are harmed.

But sometimes we love animals in a way that supports their exploitation and harms them. The issue is that this store is misguidedly treating these sentient beings like merchandise by buying them from breeders (possibly even breeding mills, they would not tell me where they get birds from) then selling them to make money. Birds, and no animal, should be bought/sold for profit and in doing so we are commodifying them and contributing to the existing crisis of birds who are already in need of homes. If people stop buying/selling birds, people would instead adopt them from rescues and shelters and alleviate the stress and burden on rescuers while getting animals who actually need homes in to homes, instead of breeding more and more in to existence. Additionally, many birds suffer immensely in captivity and rip our their own feathers out of distress (a behavior that does not happen in the wild) these animals are not domesticated, are highly social and should be living in huge flocks and flying free in their natural habitats. I really hope someday this store will do the right thing and prioritize what is in the best interest of the animals by ceasing to buy birds from exploitative breeders and selling them like merchandise for profit, and instead host adoption events with local bird rescues as there are thousands of birds who desperately need forever homes. I love pet stores and I shop at them all the time as I have 20+ rescued animals I need supplies for. The vast majority of pet stores in SF thrive without selling animals, and I know the Animal Company can too! :) The folks at the Animal Company are nice people and my concerns are not a personal attack on them.

Plus, I love animals and stopping in a mom and pop pet shop "just to see what there is" happens frequently xD Unfortunately, the Animal Company hasn't carried what I needed in the past, as the cat and dog food selection is fairly limited (yet varied) given the hundreds of varieties of foods nowadays. I digress... just last weekend my kitty's special kidney food was delayed in transit and the lil chonker ate through her last order in record time. Kitty has gotten accustomed to a mix of kidney+core wellness and she let us know allllllll night Friday into Saturday that her food was not right. After two nights in a row of poor sleep, I was determined to find (Weruva) Wx Low Phos tilapia+tuna somewhere in the City. PFE website says they have it, but no stores have in stock (thank goddess I called before trekking). Called a few of the smaller shops around town with no luck. As options were dwindling, I gave The Animal Company a call and imagine my surprise when a cheery voice on the other end of the phone confirmed they did indeed have what I was looking for! It was 4th of July and the person on the phone informed me they were closing early, around 3pm, and put 4 cans of food aside for me. I immediately hopped off the couch and we got on our way to the J. Within an hour I had kidney friendly food plus some kidney friendly treats (!! Wx Low Phos new product) in hand, a full belly (stopped at Subs Inc. across the street), and we were on our way back home. Note: yes, about half+ the store is dedicated to birbs. I'm glad I took some time to read reviews+Rick's responses here on Yelp, 'cause admittedly it made me a lil sad to see some of the birbs in the store, I realize now I subconsciously avoided it. Turns out, many of the birbs in store are being boarded (and very! well cared for). Totally understandable some may look sad given they're in a new environment and very likely missing their humans. I know my kitty would be absolutely out of sorts if taken out of home while I was away (and sure, birbs are different than cats, but these birbs are VERY smart). I've been following a woman on YT, I think a random covid SiP stumble, who has educated me on these magnificent, fascinating creatures (birbs).
