Hi, We had our dog Dexter groomed at a few boutique groomers since moving to San Francisco this year and have had poor service. We decided to give Petco a go and we are very happy. We went to Petco on 16th street San Francisco and we were greeted by Scott who was amazing and clearly loved his job. Our groomer was Stacey W and gave Dexter a great cut. It was his first cut and she professionally addressed our overzealous nature and brought Dexter to us with the best groom he has ever had. We appreciate the service from Stacey, Scott and the entire Petco team today especially during strange covid times. Everything was perfect and we will definitely be return customers. I sometimes do Instacart here and every single time I'm here there isn't half the stuff on the shelves.. TL;DR We came for vet clinic, which I would rate 3 stars. 2 of the 3 people we interacted with were lovely, but the wait was agonizing (~1.5 hours for one shot...) The rest of the store looked like a 5, so I'm settling on 4. The pup needed one vaccine updated for daycare, and going to the vet would require paying for a full exam in addition to the shot, not to mention driving out there. When I learned about the Petco clinic, it sounded like a no-brainer. (In hindsight, going to the vet would have been far more efficient, although costlier.) The Petco vet is open from 6-8pm on Tuesday, and 11am-3pm on Saturday/Sunday. Most vaccines cost $35. We arrived just before 11 on the weekend, and there was already a line of 10+ owners and dogs. I couldn't believe it. I triple-checked that they open at 11, and the girl at the register said this is how it always is. Well, okay...we were already there...might as well get it done. Lo-and-behold, it was more than an hour later that we were seen. The process is as follows: 1. Get in line 2. Wait 3. Check in at the vet stand (ask questions or just place yer order) 4. Wait 5. Waitwaitwait 6. Get seen by the vet 7. Go to the main checkout line to pay Once it was our turn, the nurse/assistant was an angel - she knew exactly how to deal with my incredibly scaredy-pants dog (she was feeding him treats and distracted him by spraying some cheese/liver on the floor), but the doctor was less, uh, aware. After the shot, the nurse was finishing the paperwork when the vet tried to bring the next dog and owner into the exam room while we were still there. Luckily, the nurse stopped him before I even could, but...hello! If you have time to kill, it's not a bad option, but we came here in the effort of saving time, which certainly did not happen. The store, however, is super nice. I was really surprised by how much stuff they have, all of it good quality. Their toy selection is endless and very cute, as are their animals (mice, guinea pigs, bunnies, fish, lizards...they've got it). Bonus points for the adorable Christmas sweaters. I might just go back and get one....that'll make my dog love me even more, of course. (SARCASM) Don't worry, I'll get some bones to go with it. That'll balance it out. :) read more

Don't get your dog groomed here. They are incompetent to a degree that's funny. At least it's funny if you're not the dog owner. I get that it's a low paid job and they can't keep anyone there. So either raise prices so you can keep staff or just stop doing it. I suggest the latter. read more

Horrible grooming stuff. Made an appointment for my dog for today, got there and the woman at the grooming counter ( which already looked like she rather be anywhere but there ) was very rude and unfriendly. She said I had to present vaccinations records, but I told her that my dog had been there twice before and please check again. She insisted I go away and come back another day. Finally another rep came and found I had multiple accounts (PETCO system glitch) she spent a few min on the computer and went inside to speak to the groomer, after animated debate she said the groomer does not want to work on your dog. She game me some bogus excuses about time an groomer shortage but I told her that it was unacceptable and the only problem was the groomer just did not feel like working. She apparently was upset with me but it wasn't my fault and looking up my phone number would have cleared things up. I took the day off to take care of my dog, my time means nothing to these people so darn frustrating, I went to speak with the manager but he gave me the look and said I'm sorry I'll speak to the groomer. Horrible customer service at Petco Yonkers and Harstdale. It's supposed to be walk in for nails trimming. I went 4:45 to Yonkers, the lady told me they were unable to take my puppy and I would have to make an appointment for tomorrow. I decided to try my frequent store in Harstdale, the same story. No considered employees. The groomer saw me waiting for 10 minutes when decided to look at me from inside and just do me signs that it was closed at 5pm and told me to ask a store associate. The store associate went in to ask the groomer if she would be able to take my pet and obviously she said no. Please adjust hours in the website because your employees decide what time they want to work, not the corporate. read more

Petco has a huge array of everything you need for your cat, dog, bird - maybe even your pet tarantula (I don't want to know you) but it's impossible to find anyone to help you as you wander the store. With all of Petco's merchandise, you will (eventually) find what you came there to buy. The folks are friendly at the register and it's nice to get a 5% discount if you're a member (free to join). Plus, this location is located at the very end of the top level so you can park away from the madness of the other big box stores (Safeway, Ross) in this poorly-planned center with its clogged parking lot. read more

Nice place and good customer service. However when we got hamster cage there, the associate was nice for telling us that we could get a discount out of it because 1. the box was damaged 2. he told us there were some parts missing. When we went up to the register, the manager there named Michael doubled checked if there were missing parts and said "NO" there wasn't so I had to pay fully and believing him in so throughout the day. When I got home and tried to build the cage, I was pretty mad about how the top of the cage is cracked and the water bottle cap that comes with the set was missing. Overall I hated it how especially the manager there lied to me. FYI the pictures of the bottom of the cage is cracked, I patched it with black tape. I was able to unpatched the black tape on top of the cage and you could see the cracked but I didn't want to unpatched it more because I don't want to break it. read more

This review is for their grooming services. This is the first grooming experience my dog has had here, and it will certainly be the last. I paid for the bath + shed release. The bath itself was fine. She was for the most part clean. She smells good. However her paw hairs were still dark, so clearly they didn't scrub out the dirt between the toes. She also had a few knots in her fur that weren't there before, which I had to brush out myself!! I have an Alaskan Malamute and understand this breed is a difficult one to groom, but I don't think it's that difficult to scrub between the toes and make sure there are no knots in the fur!! And then for her nails, they barely buffed them! It's almost like they didn't trim the nails at all. In the photos attached, you can clearly see that the nail is much longer than the quick (which if you did not know, is the vein inside the nail and where you're supposed to stop). But they're still so sharp! It's as if they just touched the nails with a grinder and then called it a day. The workers were nice, but I think they're just understaffed with too large of a queue. So they're essentially forced to do rush jobs. Waste of $120. Just spend $18 for a self-service wash at Petfood Express instead if your pooch needs a bath. And then find someone else who can properly file the nails for you. read more

Today i visited this location of petco, vet services (Vetco) and might i say i had a very interesting yet disturbing visit, i was assisted by the veterinarian by the name of Dr. Mary Kelly first off might i say Rude beyond any measure, she kept addressing me repeatedly with her responses as if i wasn't comprehending or as if had a hard time hearing her although i acknowledged each response she gave me. The situation overall made me feel belittled and under minded, i felt it was best to reach out to Vetco customer service and i did, i also will be following up with them again sometime this week. Not surprising they are rated an average of 3 stars. Is it mandatory for groomers to possess and exude nasty demeanor? If my dog won't let you touch him, and you had tried a few times, maybe don't come up to me with such a ratchet, dismissive attitude. Maybe try to explain to me what has been done and what hasn't and then suggest something to alleviate the situation? Instead of avoiding eye contact and pretending you were typing on your register? Other than insisting I am not allowed to go back? My dog never had any problems with other groomers but something about Petco makes him weary. Remember that time one of your groomers clipped his nails a tad too short or another when his tags were missing? My fault for giving you another chance and coming back. I purchased a crate for my puppy on Black Friday (11/27/2020), it did not ship to me by the scheduled date (12/4/2020). As of last night, 12/3/2020, it said "order pending." She confirmed it was back ordered and would arrive in "one to ten business days." Don't send your dog here for grooming. Unprofessional staff and not honest. Will tell you they did services you asked for but picked up my dog with rough nails, so not buffed, as well as no brushed teeth. Choppy substandard cuts. Then keep him in a crate like they were giving him full service. After three times I figured this is not just a fluke or a crappy day so I filled out the corporate survey. Was going to give them one more chance and when I made an appointment they said no one will take him because there's notes that he's aggressive. I have seen them call customers to come pick up their dogs if there is an issue with aggression. I have never got such a call before. He now goes to Petsmart and loves it and not only am I more satisfied with the professionalism at Petsmart -it's a little bit less expensive as well. read more

I don't usually write reviews but this experience warrants one. I took my dog for a grooming appt during this heatwave weekend in SF. Checking in: It looked like they had a penned off area in front for check in. No shade, no attendant, just a lot of standing around in confusion. We proceeded to go inside to find the check in desk and they instructed us to get in line with the others in the vaccination line. We were confused as to why we were all in one line. 20 minutes later, we were told we were in the WRONG line. You don't make people stand in the sun with their pets especially in the wrong line. After we finally got a hold of someone for check in, they had to find someone but went to Starbucks to get a drink. Yup, you read that right. THEY SAID THEY HAD TO GO GET A DRINK FIRST. Ten minutes later, we were told to go back outside in the heat to look at this clipboard of fur length. It was pointless because nothing was done as discussed. They also charge ten more dollars for scissor fee-- idk why because you can see all the uneven scissoring. Grooming: My dog is a poodle mix and has a bear face already and they pretty much shaved it off. He looks much older and he's a puppy. We were able to find a 20% coupon to pay less but won't be coming back. Overall: This location is understaffed and not well trained. Won't be coming back. I got on the phone and I had to call back twice because the 1st person I was talking to their 1st language is not English 2nd when I spoke to the manager how are you hang up on me? when i wasn't even done talking to you. You then you only have 1 register open there's A-line of people. 5 stars for them taking the product back and giving me store credit but a 4 star on the bad service on the phone and the security at the door just stands there what the hell you therefore holding up the wall? the volunteer in the Bunny Room she would been able to help me but she was take care of the bunnies,so this person Sarah walk by i whistled out at her and asked her she could help me she was very knowledgeable on some stuff and she even pointed out you have dog clippers not cat clippers,so I said I'll thank you for catching that because the at the register said walk over there didn't tell me what or where to look.... Honestly best pet store I have been to around the Bay Area for my cats needs. Every time I have walked into petsmart they never have the food that my cat eats (rocky mountain - taste of the wild) so now I always pick up from this location! I have found other items like cat facial drops cleanser, cat double sided tape to prevent them from tearing things up. Lots of unique items that I have never heard of or seen at petsmart. I like the variety of items they have at this location and how they are quick with getting items ready for pick up. I also love the huge parking lot versus petsmart at City Center San Francisco. Less traffic too over at this petco location. Despite the reviews on handling pets - I wouldn't really trust taking my pet to a retail store for pampering I would rather look for a trust worthy clinic or pet pamper place. However, thank you for keeping your shelves stocked and having plenty of items here! I love this petco. read more

My 17 week old puppy, He's a shaggy dog a goldendoodle and I specifically asked for them just to trim his hair short in the same manner that it was growing . I understand they used trimmers possible shaved as needed. However they completely shaved all the hair off from between his eyes to his nose. It's almost like a guy shaving his mustache but keeping a beard . I also asked that they didn't give him a pompodore like they tend to do with golden doodles. He has mullet now!! I was completely shocked , my dog looked like a completely different dog and not in a good way .... after closer inspection I realized they didn't even clean his ears. Pretty convenient spot to get basic necessities. They renovated it a bit, so it looks much nicer than before. Usually there is security standing watch as you come into the store (not sure it's preventative or due to previous incidents). There is usually a good selection of products, and things are always on sale. Best part of this (and all Petco locations) is that they will price match the deal that's online. So I always make sure to have the item I'm buying up on my phone to show as proof. The staff is pretty nice and helpful, and this location also features a grooming salon. I haven't checked it out yet but it appears legit from what I can see from the outside looking in. They also have pretty good hours, and are typically open until 9pm (which is a definite plus). read more

I'm very sad to be writing this review. I've been taking my dog here for grooming for about two years (once or twice a month for a full bath, haircut, nail trim, etc... about $90 give or take for each visit). She's a 30 point, medium-sized mixed breed for context. Marlena was my go-to groomer; however, I learned today that my dog had also seen Alyssa on occasion. Unfortunately, Marlena is no longer with petco and Alyssa is departing soon (will connect by end of the story). I've been very pleased with the grooming services throughout the years and the haircut/bath quality is the only reason I continued to return despite the lack of customer service at reception and on the phones when dropping off, picking up, and scheduling appointments. I'm writing today because I've had a pretty surprising experience over the past week. I scheduled an appointment for my dog for a full bath, haircut, nail trim, extra brushing, and teeth brushing on Sunday, 6/17. I dropped my dog off and two hours later I was told I need to return to pick up my dog because she was being aggressive when being shaved in her midsection and legs albeit she is completely normal and "sweet" during bathing and shaving around the face, and that they couldn't complete the service. This was absolutely shocking to me because I've never been told that my dog had issues with aggression/snapping/etc. when trimming her legs, stomach, rear, but I figured it was someone new or that I'd learn more upon my return to the store. I returned to Petco to pick up my dog and asked to speak to the groomer to better understand the situation as I've taken my dog to various boutiques (Doggy Doodle in Milpitas/San Jose and the Bakersfield Petco in addition to the Potrero location) without instance. Instead of the groomer coming out to talk with me, they sent out another groomer by the name of Jade. Jade was polite and apologized A LOT for the inconvenience and reiterated about 4 times that this service and my next would be covered by petco and I wouldn't be financially responsible. She also mentioned that she's seen Marlena and Alyssa groom my dog and that she is a bit difficult (again, shocked: WHY HAS NOBODY TOLD ME THIS THEN?) which is why I can take some time with her, but that I can bring her back on Wednesday, 6/19 and the grooming trainer can groom her as she's more experienced with these situations. I had my sister drop her off this morning (Wednesday, 6/19) with Alyssa and the grooming trainer as I had to work. I received a callback about an hour and a half later but was in meetings so petco willingly held my dog for an additional hour and a half due to my conflicting schedule (+1 for them as it helped a lot). I arrived at petco at grooming reception and the young man at the front desk printed my ticket and handed it to me and told me to go checkout. I let him know I was told by jade that this service and the last were completely covered and he said he had no idea what I was referring to, but that the groomer wanted to speak with me so I could take it up with her. Alyssa then walked out and told me that she and Marlena were the only two groomers to bathe or cut my dog consistently, and that Marlena is gone now and she (alyssa) was leaving too. She continued that I would no longer be able to bring my dog to petco Potrero for grooming services because although my dog is "perfect when being bathed and shaved around the face, she's agitated when getting her legs and midsection shaved". She did note that I could follow her and Marlena to the new salon (Oh My Dog in Foster City). I was surprised by this (again, because why is this news and why am I banned after hearing about this for the first time after TWO YEARS of $90/180 per month?), but I told her thank you and asked about covering the cost of the grooming appointment due to jade's continuous reiteration and promise the Sunday prior. Luckily, Alyssa told me they'd cover the cost although jade was looking at me reluctantly through the window of the grooming section. I understand dogs are animals and are unpredictable, but you cannot berate and place blame on a customer who was COMPLETELY left in the dark about this situation for years and then BAN them three days after hearing about this problem for the very first time. read more

Please take this review seriously. It has been three days since my doodle was groomed here, and he is still TRAUMATIZED. I dropped off my dog and picked up a completely different one. I am sincerely concerned about what happened to him while being groomed to cause such a drastic shift in his behavior, and I am just hoping the stress and anxiety he is experiencing subsides soon. Back story: I took my dog to be groomed here but I got a call a few hours in saying that he was afraid of the clippers, so they had to stop because he wouldn't hold still. This was surprising to me because he has been groomed a few times before (he just turned one) and never had an issue. I picked him up and they agreed to have me bring him back again without charge and with more experienced groomers. I wanted to take him somewhere else, but I had already paid for the groom and didn't want to go to another salon and pay again. With the second attempt, I get a call halfway through saying he pawed at two of the groomers' faces so they had to stop. I felt so awful that this happened, but again I was shocked and wondering why he felt so vulnerable and stressed that he would do that, as it is very out of character. When I picked him up, his beautiful long doodle coat was completely shaved. They said he had mats, but with the first groomer he was able to get them out with de-matting, and it was clear that these people never even tried to save his coat. But worse, they couldn't finish so his head, behind, and tail were all completely untouched and he had long chunks of hair coming off of his paws and under his arms. He needed to be touched up somewhere else ASAP because he looked insane. I took him to Mudpuppy's on Castro for a touch-up, and they were so good and gentle with him. When I picked him up, they told me that his behavior was completely fine, he didn't act scared or mean at all. He was so cooperative. They expressed concern about what happened at Petco and said there is NO reason he should have had that experience. They also said that they have seen this a lot lately from clients who have gone to that Petco location. That is not ok. I don't even care about the look of the groom, I just want my dog's behavior to return to normal. He was such a good boy prior to taking him there, but now he is skittish, jumpy, has constant zoomies, and is a bit fear reactive on walks. I even called my vet and she said it could take days for his cortisol level to return to normal after trauma, but it's been three days and he is no better. I just can't believe all of this resulted from a groom. I pray that it doesn't do LONG TERM EMOTIONAL DAMAGE. Please, from one dog lover to another, do not go here for a groom. I went into Petco to get my dog Hustle groomed he is a Yorkie this is the second time I wasn't satisfied with the grooming. The first time I said nothing but the second time I had to say something. I asked for them to cut his hair a half an inch they cut it 2 inches which made him look like a little rat so bad I didn't even recognize my dog. I told them I was disappointed with the cut. I was informed that the policy was if you weren't satisfied you can get a refund. So I did I made another appointment and was denied cause I complained. I talked to the manager Quin who talk to me very rude and so did his District manager Robert who as so was rude. Called the corporate office which they said it's up to the managers discretion. I will never shop at Petco again. Today (Labor Day Monday 2023) my 13 year old daughter and I arrived at Petco in Lakeshore Plaza (SF) at 6:31 pm (literally, 6:31 pm). Sign on the door stated "Sorry for the inconvenience but we are closing at 6:30 today." We could see through the window that several people were still in line at the cash register. My daughter and I waived at an employee through the glass door and we were able to explain that we just wanted to buy a Snuggle Puppy (little stuffed animal with a heartbeat that soothes puppies and helps them sleep) for an eight week old puppy that we brought home today and that it would take 2 minutes. We checked the Petco website before we went and it showed that the Snuggle Puppy was in stock and that they were open until 8:00 pm. They turned us away. read more

I had a bad experience with the grooming department. I can't speak for the rest of the store. I wanted a full service bath and haircut for my dog. I don't think I will be coming back to the groomers here, nor would I recommend this place to others. I was unable to reach them over the phone after several attempts, so I don't expect others to have much success. They just don't pick up their phone. I turned online and made an appointment there. I chose an available time slot. My appointment was *canceled* without giving me a chance to reschedule. I scheduled ANOTHER appointment. This time, it was *rescheduled* by petco to another time slot, without asking me first. At this point, I would have really appreciated a phone call from petco to at least give me a heads up that his appointment would be canceled. And then moved. I show up at his appointment time and wait *25 minutes* to be checked in. Upon check-in, I'm told his groomer is *on lunch* and that they weren't sure when the groomer would be back. Why would petco make me wait for 25 min only to tell me that our appointment wasn't even going to be honored? I'm told my dog will be ready for pick-up at around 9pm. I go home and receive a text later saying my dog needs to be picked up no later than 7:30 because the grooming department closes at 8pm?? I'm not one to write reviews - this is actually my first. We had such a horrible experience here that i feel obligated to warn other dog owners. DO NOT come to this Petco groomer. We brought in our poodle for a bath & cut who is very comfortable being groomed (as most poodles are since they need grooming every month) for a 1:30pm appointment with Stacie. After 4 HOURS, we received a short, snippy phone call that our dog has pooped/peed on herself and they can no longer groom her because of the stress. They demanded that we pick her up and hung up the phone before I could even respond. Why wouldn't they have called us during the last 4 hours explaining this?! Of course, upon calling the phone number back it just rings and says they cannot take calls. When we arrived to pick up our dog, we waited 25 minutes before anyone could come out to help us (with 5 other customers waiting as well). They told us they had to bathe her multiple times throughout the time she was there and upon picking her up, they responded with "we won't be charging you for the multiple baths" as if this was some sort of favor. We asked to speak to Stacie (the groomer) but the other staff at the front desk said she was busy grooming another dog. We waved to her in the back through the window, but she refused to speak with us after finishing the next dog and then she actually left the store!! Another groomer said she would have been happy to groom our dog, but she was booked the rest of the night so couldn't help. When speaking with the manager, she said there was absolutely nothing she could do to help us in this situation, with just a response of "we won't be charging you for bathing her". Needless to say we won't be shopping at Petco nor will we be bringing our dog back here, and we will be sharing this experience with our friends and family as well. I have nothing good to say about this Petco. The store is currently going through a remodel but it's generally decently stocked. My issue is with the service. It's ALWAYS something. Today my dog had been there for nearly 6 hours when they finally reached out to me saying he was ready and that they had been trying to get a hold of me. I had no record of any communication. When I wanted to talk to the manager about this she literally had nothing to say. This wasn't about trying to get something for nothing. This was about accountability. And I feel there was none. If I was being spiteful I'd give Petco 1 star, but customer service is only part of the rating; it shouldn't be the whole ranking. In my opinion, this place really needs to understand how to talk to customers that buy its goods and services. read more

The animals are in horrible conditions. It's really really depressing. The staff aren't educated in handling these animals and they're too busy to take care of them. Please. Just stop carrying small animals at this location. I've returned something twice already and still never got the credit back to my card. On top of animal neglect this store seems to just be straight up scamming. read more

This Petco is nice. Not sure why there are so many low reviews; some of them sound outright false. For example, this Petco is always very clean. Whenever I need a quick get-related visit (e.g. get more heartworm medication), they're always available. read more

The animals here are really great, they have mice, hamsters, birds and reptiles. I would suggest coming here or Petsmart if you want a pet.

Came here and found no service. I see staff working registers and another cleaning the cages. Then there was a security standing at the door and another that walked around. The staff behind the registers couldn't walk away to help. The one cleaning the cages couldn't hear a thing. The security walking around couldn't even hear me scream at him to open the door for the restroom. And the security at the door just stands there. read more
