We have been shopping here for at least 4 years. Always encounter a knowledgeable and helpful staff. As an example, our son ended up bringing home a very ill gecko that he saved from a friend. We went in for advice. They helped us get the little guy back to a normal state. We ended up taking him in to the store to rescue. About a month later, we were in the store for dog food. The "gecko" guy saw us and updated us on the rehoming and health of Gordon. The staff seems to be well trained. Always cheerful which is a good indicator of good management. read more

I was disappointed to see that this store continues to sell live animals rather than partner with local rescues. During my visit, I saw guinea pigs, mice, turtles, and other animals for sale, including guinea pigs advertised at 25% off. It was difficult to see living animals displayed and discounted like retail merchandise. Many of the animals were alone in small glass enclosures with little opportunity for enrichment or normal behavior. There are thousands and thousands of small animals in rescues that need homes. Continuing to source animals from commercial breeders while so many adoptable animals already exist is a business choice, not a necessity. I hope Petco moves toward ending the sale of live animals and instead becomes a leader in adoption partnerships with local rescue organizations. Until then, I can't support this aspect of the business and encourage others to consider adopting rather than purchasing animals from retail stores. read more

I used to come to Petco to buy supplies for my dogs and rodents that I can't find at animal supply stores that do NOT sell animals. It's honestly so hard to go past all the animals living in their tiny, restrictive enclosures. I never have to pass them but today I went through to see how all the animals were doing. Sadly, I saw fish being sucked into the water purifiers, alive and stuck, dying a slow death. I found several innocent fish like this, it must happen daily. Turtles, who live decades, living in boxes with no enrichment. I saw hamsters and mice bored out of their minds in tiny plexiglass cubes. Why are we selling animals when our shelters are inundated with animals who need homes? Petco does not need to sell animals to make a profit, they have great products and food for sale. I quickly learned I liked the mice I had to feed him more than the snake. but a deals a deal. So when I think he'll be hungry soon I get mice and keep them for pets until the time comes. This place has like 150 mice crammed in a fish tank. I asked for 3. I was asked what they were for. I said pets. because they are my pets until the bell tolls. she told me she couldn't sell them to me as pets unless I bought or showed her a tank with proper ventilation and drip system, etc. I told her I have a giant plastic bin in my car with a water bowl, food and newspaper. but that wasn't good enough. I told her the mice were for my python which would allow me to buy them without passing inspection. she told me it was too late for that because I'd already said pets. Petco sells so much great supplies for animals, why continue to sell animals like merchandise? I used to love going to Petco to buy toys for my rescued and foster dogs, but now that I have learned about the breeding mills and wild-catching of animals to be sold in Petco my heart aches every time I walk in. So many die before they even reach the store shelf, and many more at the store itself. Petco, you must stop selling animals. These days all stores are short-staffed, so I appreciate all those who come to work. My hats off to the pet groomers who come to work energized to groom our fur babies. I love checking out the clearance section, but must stay away at times lol. Their online grooming system is not user-friendly, it doesn't allow only nail trim and buffing. It makes you have to pick a bath, well my four-legged baby does not need a bath; I give her baths. She's so little, she enjoys her baths, and practically dries herself off. I went in to get a grooming service for my dog Bacon and Ben is always so pleasant to work and talk with. He listens, is very knowledgeable and great at what he does. I haven't had a problem when I go to Ben for Bacon's needs. Ben deserves a promotion. As for the store, it's stocked enough but I feel that it's pretty bare at the same time. Does not feel like anyone is really going in there to purchase pets so the hamsters and fishes are just there. Since Anthony's been there, the tanks seem healthier. My experience coming to this petco has always been positive as far as interactions with employees. I try to avoid the Novato Petco ever since seeing a manager berate a new employee who was still learning in early 2023. We hung out by the fish for 30mins kept trying to flag someone down but kept getting the brush off , and then told us they were closed and couldn't help. Cheeses I guess if your store can't even be kept clean, makes sense there are people with such nasty attitudes. Let the store owner know on our way out what has happened but didn't even try to help either. I have a lot of childhood memories at Petco. Growing up I bought fish and got my first hamster here. On my most recent visit, the staff provided wonderful customer service. My neighbor needed more cat food and asked if I could pick it up for her since she has a bad back. When I got to the store I asked the lady at the register where the particular brand was located. Another employee saw me and checked to see if it was for my neighbor and mentioned he was on the phone with her. The manager was nearby and offered to go to the back and bring it up front for me. I was pretty impressed with how helpful they were. They know how to take care of their customers. I stopped in again a short time later to pick up some treats for my cat this time around and the lady at the register remembered me. We talked while she rung me up and she sent me on my way. I was greeted by BEN who I have never had before. BEN was so customer service oriented. He gave suggestions of some alternative ideas to insure that Daisy would be getting the best nail trim. I took my dog here to get groomed. First off I was 2 minutes late once I got there I was told the groomer went to the store real quick and would be back soon. Once the person came I explained how I wanted my pup cut she explained that she might not be able to do that which is fine. My dog was there over 2 hours when I went to pick her up you have to pay before you see your dog I paid and, tipped 10$ which the cashier thought was so nice ( I should of known then) when I saw my dog her ears were wet and she smelled bad still . Now it's been 3 days and my dog is scratching profusely and I feel like she didn't get cleaned or get her glands expressed . I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN! Poorly managed operation with lousy customer service. My senior dog has some minor special needs that I always talk to a potential groomer about upfront. The store associate assured me the manager would be doing the work and my pet would be well taken care of, so I made an appointment. Fast forward several weeks, I show up and it turns out I am "not in their system." The manager gets defensive and insists it isn't her fault, which I didn't say, imply, or even care about. Then she insinuated it was impossible for me to have made an appointment at the time I did, as if I were making this up? At this point, perceiving that she was being rude to me, I told her pointedly that if she didn't want to help me she should tell me to leave. This snapped her out of the unsolicited finger pointing for a moment, and she offered me an appointment in a week. Not what I was hoping for, but I didn't balk at the offer. Then, while I was trying to book this new appointment, the manager starts telling me how none of this is her fault again! So I told her to forget it, I didn't ask whose fault it was and I didn't come here to tell her how to manage the groom station. But with the manager blaming absent employees and prsent customers for basic operational lapses, I wonder where the buck stops. read more

The grooming staff here are not what I would call customer friendly at all. They can be rude and dismissive and just generally unhelpful. I have brought my dog there for a number of years to have her nails trimmed and today had an experience that will prevent me from going back. On a number of occasions I have had to ask them to change my account because they had it in their system and were recording another animal. we attempted to change it this time and they did. They said my rabies certificate was five days out of validation and rather than me to bring an updated certificate next time they refuse service. Vaccinations are not like a light switch, they don't expire the moment they are out. in addition, it's one of the dirtiest grooming areas I've ever seen. If it wasn't for the minor service, we would get there. I would never leave my for anything. Time to look for a better place! read more

The store is almost empty and the first response I get is, not I can't help you right now. His excuse was that the phone "might ring" and he needs to be available to answered. I made an appointment online Thursday for a Friday morning grooming appointment. I have never been to a Petco before, but my vet has always made me medicate my dog for anxiety before a nail trimming. so I gave her anxiety medication and the second dose 2 hours before my 10:45 am appointment. I then received a phone call from Petco to tell me they were closed and that I would need to reschedule. I called the Novato store to see if they could take me since my poor little dog was all doped up and ready to have her nails trimmed. they told me Petco won't take a medicated dog. So I rescheduled my Petco appointment for the next day at 10:15. I just arrived with my undrugged dog and her vaccination records and the groomer didn't show up for work today so sorry there was nothing they could do. My family just visited this store to get ready for our new rescue puppy that is arriving next week. Like many businesses, they are understaffed and trying to accommodate every customer. The manager spent so much time and care, guiding us and advising us on what to buy and what was worth it, and other important care tips that we wouldn't know. He juggled other customers so politely, as did his one other employee. They were kind, extremely knowledgeable as pet owners and prior zoo employees (as well as obvious training/marketing through Petco), and it was such a positive experience that we are committed to shopping there again and using their other vet and grooming services. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. I didn't catch his name, but a gentleman who was restocking was very kind and assisted me with the help I needed. While I didn't catch his name, I do know he's originally from Hayward, as it came up as we were talking. First negative experience after 17 years of going to Petco.. dealt with a 'manager' with no customer skills and insistent on arguing over clarity of a sale sign. This manager single-handedly cost the store what was nearly a $400 transaction on Black Friday, and a faithful customer who visited every month.. way to go Petco, keep hiring 'managers' like her and this location will be out of business in no time. First and foremost! F*** this place! They have no regard for their customers! I made an appt for this location considering it was the only one that had availability. I drive from Richmond at 7:30am my appt was at 8:15am this morning and I got there early. I was waiting outside the grooming place with my dog the store doesn't open until 10am so I tried knocking on the door another customer ended up coming with their dog with the same time appt. 8:15am. Someone came to the door to ask us why we were knocking and when we said we have appts for grooming the guy said oh maybe they're running late. He didn't apologize or try to say we will call you to reschedule as soon as someone comes in he didn't say anything! All he said was she called out and that's it. It's like a slap in the face! My time and gas and toll is important to me! So for this to happen is just f'd up! I have 3 kids I don't have time to waste just taking joy rides! It's not right how they just treated us.
