The food was absolutely horrendous went in today and had lunch. We ordered a double cheeseburger shrimp basket and cheese fries. Literally nothing had any flavor at all. The coleslaw tasted like water the fries had zero salt just tasted like cardboard. The cheeseburger tasted like a dirty grill no seasoning at all also the place was dirty and gross you could see the grease stains on the old 1970s shag blinds. Was on my way to Hannibal for a trip and stopped by Pete's for dinner on a Friday. They make a pretty good bacon double cheeseburger and onion rings. The patty's were big and delicious and the ingredients were fresh and didn't taste processed at all. The tomato in the burger was so good I'd bet it was a garden tomato instead of a store bought. The onion rings were huge, plentiful and crispy. They had a fish Friday platter which seemed tempting to try but the burger I had was great! The Ambiance is okay. The place is an old A&W Root-beer restaurant. The service was okay. I ordered my burger and they brought it to me. I had a double burger, fries and bbq beans. The fries and beans were okay. However the burger was one of the worst burgers I've ever had. The meat was rubbery and tasted bad. The bun was soaked in grease. I took one bite and threw it in the trash. This place is a tradition and I guess regulars get accustomed to the place. I've lived in Wentzville for 22 years, and I finally went there last Friday for a "tremendous" retro cheeseburger. If I live another 22 years, I won't go there again. The double cheeseburger was just two frozen patties that had the texture of rubber hockey pucks. The french fries, while hot and not greasy, tasted as if they had been fried in old, stale, oil. The cole slaw tasted like it came out of a 5 gallon bucket. The ladies behind the counter were friendly, funny, although not meaning to be, and were very loud. And the place was incredibly expensive. I had the double cheese burger basket with a medium iced tea, and the bill was $16.10!!! I couldn't even eat half of my meal. I like the venue, but i won't be back. The food is oily, greasy and rubbery. I got a hamburger and the bottom bun was soaked with grease. I asked for another bun and it was like I insulted them. The counter person is rude, rushes you and is dismissive. A lady, waiter walked around and refilled drinks of people she knew by name. We were ignored. Before we left my wife went to the restroom. She had to wait cause it was occupied. Then a kitchen worker came out of the restroom blowing cigarette smoke into the air. I'm amazed this place is still in business. This place is a total throwback to the past of Wentzville as a hard scrabble railroad and manufacturing town; clientelle and all. The gravely voiced lady who takes the orders has the charm of a cactus, but that's part of the charm of the place. Nothing has changed in this place inside since it was built as an A&W Restaurant in the 60s. You can sit around the faux firepit on a chair, at the counter, or in one of the many well worn brown vinyl booths. It came in at about $10.50 for a Double Cheeseburger, Fries, Cole Slaw, and a root beer which they make on site. I thought that seemed like a lot as I paid for the order, then I got my burger, nicely topped with lettuce and tomatoes, and was HUGE! Seriously, this is the best burger in St. Charles County; the kind of burger you'd expect to get at an old fashioned 60s drive in like this. Fries were decent, although they have cheap, off brand ketchup that's kinda funky. Slaw wasn't the greatest but was decent, but its worth four stars for the burger and root beer alone. read more
