Stopped in for lunch here recently and had a good meal. This place has been here for decades, serving up simple homestyle cooking. The host station is front and center as you enter this old school diner feeling restaurant with an open interior and high ceilings, and we were greeted walking in and sat within the same moments. Our server stopped by within a minute or two and took our drink orders, returning within a minute and took our lunch orders. I opted for the fried chicken with gravy special that afternoon, with a side of green beans and cornbread. True homestyle, simple and good. Greenbeans like my grandma made. the fried chicken was done well, nicely cooked and flavorful. The cornbread was good but a tiny portion? Like seriously small, it was not a slice of bread, more like a mini popper bite size. This is not the old Pete's . Service and food was terrible . I had a footlong and hot chips but 15 min later they didn't have hot chips . So they gave me French Fries . The bun was soggy and the hotdog crisp . No flavor of chili , slaw or onion but the mustard was strong . My wife got potato soup which she said had a bad flavor . Pete's is such a yummy restaurant. We prefer their breakfast over other meals there. The biscuits are delicious. Eggs and bacon cooked perfectly. Home fries are great-but pro tip: ask for them to be deep fried in the fryer. Makes them so crispy and even more delicious! Pete's wait staff are really good too. They have a big menu with a great diner-like selection of starters, salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, entrees, and specials. Our very friendly and upbeat server (loved her very positive attitude and demeanor!) was on top of getting drinks orders taken and checking for any questions about the menu. I chose one of the specials of the day in the hamburger steak (ordered without the grilled onions). This hamburger steak was delicious and flavorful even without the onions, I enjoyed this meal very much...even the fries were almost perfect for my tastes. I ordered a cup of their soup of the day, potato, as it sounded great as one of my faves and I was not disappointed...very good soup with lots of flavor without going overboard with seasoning. My family ordered another of the day's specials of pork chops and also the soup with salad, they enjoyed their meals a lot also they said. If I was nick-picking anything, it would have been I did not get a refill of my iced tea during my meal and my mac-n-cheese did not hit the mark with me (although not bad). However that would be a 4.5 star experience in my eyes with rating this restaurant in line with diner style eateries, and I definitely go 5 stars with the server's amazingly upbeat presence. Service started out fine until I brought my service dog in because of the heat.91 degrees. The waitress lit into me even though I had her badge and business cards and harness on. She is an autism psychiatric service dog. She is treating us like we have the black plague. My girlfriend came a couple weeks ago to save seats for 4 of us. We were on the way. I have eaten at Pete's several times over the last year and thought it time to update my review. Little if anything has changed at this neighborhood diner that has been serving primarily classic Southern comfort food, as well as a few Greek choices, for over 45 years. They serve 3 meals a day, six days a week, just like their competition 1/4 miles away- that would be Clemmons Kitchen. The breakfast items here are the usual choices, and all are done well, and the pricing is more than reasonable, and remained that way even when the price of eggs was thru the roof. Their daily lunch specials also offer quality and value. The only complaint I have here is that the service can spotty. You are requested to seat yourself and when the restaurant is busy your waitress may not spot you right away - this has happened to me more than once. The last time I ate here (for breakfast), my order was over 25 minutes coming out of the kitchen, and everything was cold - eggs, grits, even the toast! My waitress disappeared for long stretches, and I finally had to ask someone to find her so I could get my check. We were in the area and wanted to grab some breakfast. My wife did a little searching on Yelp and came up with Pete's. We were impressed by all the positive reviews and saw they had been in business since 1977! Pete's is located at the end of a strip mall with ample parking. The exterior appears to be well taken care of. The inside is very open with a lot of various sized tables organized throughout. Most tables were occupied and we put our name on the list. There were a few people waiting to be seated. As we waited our turn, we could tell there were alot of local customers. Many of the employees appeared to know the customers and greeted many of them by name. We were called within 10 minutes or so and seated at a booth. Our waitress quickly stopped to provide us menus and waters. We began to look over the menu. The breakfast menu size is smaller than most but they offer a variety of breakfast options ranging from bacon and eggs to pancakes, to breakfast sandwiches, etc. My wife was impressed to see the price of the steak and eggs so she decided to order that. For her sides, she chose gravy and toast. She knew I would help with that. I chose a breakfast sandwich with sausage, cheese and egg on an english muffin with a side of home fries. Our waitress came back a few minutes later to apologize and let us know they had run out of ribeye. So my wife decided to order the country ham instead. She was a little bummed since she doesn't normally order steak and eggs but when the ham arrived she was happy with it. Our food was tasty and we both enjoyed our meals. We both left full, the service was perfect and the food was homecooked goodness. When the server dropped off the bill we were amazed, it is very, very reasonable. Went for breakfast and was just so disappointed. The breakfast menu is incredibly bland with no imagination. I ordered the eggs Benedict which had the worst hollandaise sauce I have ever tasted. It was jarred or canned and bitter. While the service was friendly and welcoming and it's clean, there are much better places for breakfast. read more

After we ordered, the staff asked us if it was alright to bring the salads out first. Yes, of course. The salads came without silverware or napkins. After a 10 minute wait, had to ask the person bussing the tables to bring the silverware and napkins. The food...EH! rate the food a 2, maybe a 2.5-NO MORE. Cabbage (hot n' greasy), Mac & cheese (started out almost hot and was cool by the last bite) & Fried Squarrrshhh (again, greasy) and Texas Toast (ummm...it is buttery bread). We've been here for breakfast numerous times but this was our first time for dinner. It was a Monday night and they were on a wait. The place was packed. I don't think there was much over $12 on the menu and their portions are huge. In particular, my wife had the Petite Seafood Platter with flounder and shrimp. It must have had 60 shrimp, two good sized flounder filets, baked potato, hush puppies and cole slaw for $12.95. I had the 8 ounce chopped steak with grilled onions and two sides for a whopping $8.50. The food and service were both on point. Now I see why this place is packed all the time. read more

A great local eatery and a Clemmons staple. Pete's has great quality food with really good portions. The menu is rather large offering a big mix ranging from Greek, fried seafood, pasta entrees, and burgers and sandwiches. Normally it's a red flag for a place to offer such a big range of food options and having such a big menu but they have done it all really well building a loyal local patronage in the process. Despite this being pitched as a diner and the menus backing that concept up, no breakfast after 11a and nothing off the other menus until after 11a. We were there for lunch & the waitress wouldn't take our order until straight up 11. I get the policy, but can't you just take our order while you're here & put it in when the time is right? Idk. The experience was very strange and it took an extremely long time (past the 11a order time for lunch) to get our food. To top it off, the food was super basic & the meat tasted old. It's hard nowadays to find excellent "country food" that doesn't serve a menu that includes unseasoned, tasteless canned green beans or dehydrated mashed "potatoes" smothered with gravy from a can. Pete's food is nothing like that! We stopped for lunch on a recent trip to the mountains, hoping to get what we consider "home cooking." We weren't disappointed! We had country style steak with gravy, cucumber salad, and mashed potatoes with gravy that I sincerely think someone actually made from scratch. And lima beans! I love limas and never make them myself because my spouse doesn't care for them. These were delicious. The only thing that was a negative was a sad little dinner roll that was neither fluffy nor tasty. Service was quick, and judging from how packed it was on a Tuesday at lunch time, it appears to be a favorite in the Clemmons community. As a loyal customer of Pete's Family Restaurant, I had been a dedicated customer and influenced other people including co-workers to go there. I decided to try something new, so I asked the waitress if people were impressed by the spaghetti and meatballs. She replied that it was very popular, so I decided to try it. I soon realized that her appraisal was not an honest one and that she probably has no choice but to say that regardless. The dish was simply a can of Texas Pete Hot Dog Chili poured over Spaghetti. I took one greasy bite and told the waitress that I didn't like it or want it. I asked her to ask the manager to take it off bill. The mgr said that there was nothing wrong with it, so NO!! Excellent experience at Pete's! I took my grandma here one Saturday morning around 9 am and we waited about 15 minutes for a table for 3. The breakfast menu is smaller than other places but they had really anything you could want for breakfast from pancakes (yum!) to liver mush (if you're into that, then have at it but I will not be partaking!). The waiters were friendly and made sure that the coffee in our cups stayed hot and fresh. The western omelet was really delicious with plenty of filling and cheese. The shredded hash browns were crispy and not overly salty or oily which was great. You really can't go wrong with this type of diner breakfast and the prices are totally reasonable. Price is right here - won't knock your socks off but probably always taste the same and you are satisfied when the bill comes. We ordered both our sandwiches on croissants - they came on buns. I added pickles - they didn't give me any pickles. She asked for a side of ranch - no one ever came back. We are the food as provided - chicken salad on bun with fries and banana pudding and I had grilled chicken on bun with fries and a drink special. Someone eventually walked by and got us some ranch. Bill came and it was only $17 for the 2 of us. Croissants forgotten immediately as we left a $5 bill on the table and paid and left. We will be back when our parents are in town - they will like this place. Until then we have other places to try. The dining room area looked a little dirty as there were straw wrappers and papers scattered throughout on the carpet (kind of like buffet night at Pizza Hut). The wait for the food seemed long. I've enjoyed going to Pete's for the last few years but lately the past few months my experience there has been horrible. At least three consecutive times I've gone there. There was hair in my food and never an apology given. So on today about a half an hour ago, I sat down waited about five minutes. The waitress in that particular section saw me sit down. Then about five minutes later there was a white couple that was set in the booth next to me. They were immediately greeted and asked what they wanted to drink. Then the waitress came to me and asked me what I wanted to drink. in a matter of minutes the other table got their drinks and their food and everything. I sat there for more than 15 minutes, waiting for my food. The waitress never came back to the table. It was clearly a racial issue this waitress did not want to serve me, I would never return to this restaurant ever again. It's particular waitress had black hair. read more
