    New York Dog!
    Maureen G.

Carl and I stopped in for our first Pete's hot dogs and we weren't disappointed! We had the New York dogs and look forward to stopping in again! Can't believe it took us this long to get here but will be back soon!

The restaurant is in Newburgh, NY, at the intersection of S Robinson Ave and S William St. Newburgh is a very small town; I would consider it countryside if it were in China, even though there are no farms around. Newburgh is a beautiful, quiet, and safe town, as is the southern town called New Windsor, NY. I stayed at Plum Point on Hudson in New Windsor, a very friendly community. I walked around there every day and seldom met anyone. The landscape was so beautiful in late autumn, with red leaves on the ground creating a fantastic view. I lived there for six weeks and even brought my cat with me all the way from Los Angeles. There are not many businesses around, only a restaurant/bar to the southwest, and Pete's, which was 3 miles north of my home. It is nothing special, just like any hometown's long-standing small food booth. They usually maintain their standard, keeping the flavor as good as it was 30 years ago, but they also lack the passion to update the menu or adjust the ingredients to improve the taste. They have never updated the menu link on Google Maps, which still shows the price of a hot dog as $1.85 each--the 2018 price. Google Maps also links to their official website (https://peteshotdogsinc.net/ ). Yes, I was right: founded in 1932, now run by the fifth generation, they always keep things simple, with almost nothing changed in the recipe. I love this style--sometimes simple is king. I hate food that has dozens of ingredients and dozens of cooking steps. Sometimes simple is king; no, it is always king. I had a New York Hot Dog and a Mustard & Raw Onions Hot Dog. The frankfurters were soft, not too juicy, not too beefy, but still good. The onions mixed with sauerkraut were tasty. The New York one used red onions--literally red-colored sautéed onions, not the purple-colored red onions. I don't think such a hot dog would have a place in New York City, but in such a suburban town, it has its own history and story. It is worth trying if you happen to drive by or want to view West Point from above, as there is a viewpoint several miles south of Pete's.

For me, the best of the best. In business since 1932. Cash only. Boiled Sabretts. Bunch of different toppings choices. Stopped in today w best friend, Pots & Pains, AKA Zagbolt. On Wednesdays, Pete's runs a special... two dogs w one topping each, fountain soda, and a small bag of chips for about $6.50, pre-tax. We each wanted one w mustard and kraut and one w mustard and pushcart style red onions. HOWEVER, I must've screwed up the order since all 4 dogs had mustard, kraut, and red, pushcart style onions. Still good. Great value, and no evidence left behind EXCEPT the mustardy oniony swatch on Pots's shirt (formed a nice collage w two earlier "mishaps"). Seriously, Pete's is a must stop if we're anywhere w/I 50 miles. Forget college. If I were right out of high school (or prison), I would copy Pete's business model, and retire in my 40's as a multi-millionaire. Time for Pete's to franchise out! 5 exclamation points, I mean stars!!!!!

This is a great icon of Newburgh. They specialise in hot dogs (go figure). They have a lovely snap, and on a soft steamed bun are ready for a variety of toppings. Definitely a place you have to try if you're in the area. The service is friendly and the ambiance is hot dog shack and that's part of the fun

What a nice slice of Americana. A tasty hot dog. But the conversation is worth the short stop. I felt welcomed and the hot dog? Delicious with real snap.

Pete's is a staple in Newburgh. I honestly crave these hotdogs enough to drive 1 hr 15 min in order to satisfy my craving. The Italian ice is great also. There's a parking lot for easy in and out. I typically take my food to go. In warmer months I love to be outdoors by the waterfront or enjoy at someone's home when it's cold. The one negative is they don't accept cc or Apple Pay. They do have an atm machine to make it easier if you're like me and don't carry cash.

Came here for quick meal before my shift. Staff was pretty friendly and polite, ordered two dogs one with chili and one with meat sauce. Both good, love the homemade sauces, really speaks to serving the best.

The legendary Pete's Hot Dog shop! I hadn't been here in years so I figured I stop by for a tastebud refresher. It's still the same good quality hot dog I remember from years ago. No Frills, stick to the basics good tasting hot dog. There's also an awesome story behind this shop and how it was passed down through the generations. Check it out!

A very good historical hot dog stand. The flavorful hot dog was placed in a nice soft bun with condiments I requested.

Newburgh, NY - we were directed to eat here by a friend after we visited nearby Motorcyclepedia…read more It's a popular local hangout, and the vibes immediately strike me as: if this were my neighborhood watering hole, I'd be a regular here. The decor alone earns a star: rock n roll ephemera covers every surface - walls, ceiling, shelves and display case - and takes me back to the days when I went to "shows" and not "concerts." There's even a small stage in the corner for live music, so that definitely checks out. Our friendly server Dianne hands us menus printed on newspaper, and I needed a moment to decide between the large selection of comfort food classics with creative variations on a theme - burgers, sandwiches, salads, mac & cheese, chilis & soups, burritos, wraps, fajitas, rice bowls, and specialty entrées - finally settling on some apps and a burger to share with my kiddo (which I'm told are good here), while our friend went for a steak bowl. There's a surprisingly large vegan and vegetarian section. Surprising because I haven't come across many veggie-forward pubs that offer anything more than a perfunctory Beyond Burger/black bean burger and an anemic salad. Here, they actually respect the non-carnivore's right to have some decent choices. The "hot" wings are alright and not really hot (though admittedly my spice sensors are likely eroded from my intense affinity for heat), but the poutine was a standout, which we ordered with bbq pork add-on. And while it won't quite pass muster in Montreal (tbh I've rarely had authentic poutine in the US despite seeing it on menus a lot - the cheese curds are never right), it was piping hot and delicious. The revelation was the twisty cut potatoes underneath, seriously additive! I love places with heart, which isn't always easy to define but the effort can be discerned in the atmosphere and the details. The Wherehouse has got that spirit & essence. With 16 rotating draft lines featuring regional brews, and substantial food offerings that far outpaces the typical bar menu, it's a down-to-earth dining establishment with the soul of a dive bar, that makes you feel welcomed like a local from the get-go.

We'd been striking out, one call after another, as every spot in our town decided to close up early that night. So landing a last-minute res. at this tiny, offbeat bar-restaurant in Newburgh, NY felt like a win. We just wanted a few bites+drinks before heading to Briarcliff Manor for a Halloween party and ended up finding way more than that. Unbeknownst to us, The Dylan Doyle Band played that night and man...was he good. The kid uses funk, rock, blues, R&B in his mix. Plus he sang his own renditions of D'Angelo- to honor him that night, Chaka and several others. I mean...he absolutely blew us away! But imagine this: it's got the vibe of Tarantino's From Dusk Till Dawn bar feel, minus the vampires and gore. This place is welcoming, unpretentious, serves decent bar food and has an excellent vegan menu that goes wayyyy beyond the usual portobello burger. Carnivores are covered too. Drinks are ok too. But do let them know light on the ice. We got music- a live band at that, decent food and had a fantastic time. This is Wherehouse.

Nathan's all-beef hot dogs are the best and of course I had to have the Chicago style hot dog but I've never eaten at one of their restaurants. I've only made them myself. I first looked through the Starbucks, but when I turned out and found nothing really edible that would have sufficed for "brain food", I had to turn to looking for something else. I saw Roy Rogers (and almost bought there), but when I saw no workers working there nor any line, when I realized I could be served with more choices quicker, I went with the quickest-way and headed to your Nathan's booth instead. I ordered two hotdogs and a soda, and unlike most Nathan's I've eaten at, the whole order came to 10.79. That's a rip-off. Although I got a good hotdog like others, the total price was nowhere in line with most Nathan's. The employee just handed me the cup and never told me at first where the soda machine was. I looked to my left as I gave her the card, but never looked in back of me to my right (until much later). Couldn't she have said: "You can find the soda machines to your right over there" and that would have sufficed? After looking for a few minutes to find this machine, it took me a while. I tried the Sprite, and thank god I taste-tested what I ordered before moving on. The Sprite was not at the right consistency of spritzer to flavoring (100% seltzer and 0% flavoring), so I moved onto Root beer which I found to be a little on the flat side, but tasted okay otherwise. I'll settle for taste and not so much carbonation in this case only. I came back after I grabbed a lid, and by that time my hot dogs had come out and were already boxed up and ready to be taken to a table and eaten. I had to talk with my mom a second or two first, then off to the tables near the Roy Rogers to be eaten. This idea wasn't such a good idea today, apparently. However, I was thinking the right things at first, or so I thought.
