In February, my partner and I decided we would adopt a new family member. We found PetMac on Yelp and I'm so glad we did. We did a little looking around the store and we weren't really set on any one cat. So Lori, one of the owners of Petmac, came over and explained that all cats have different personalities at the shelter vs. when they get home. Lori recommend Addie, our 5 y/o Tuexdo. She was so shy and nervous. But we've had her for 5 1/2 months now and she is the best thing to happen to us. Haha. After we got her papers together, Lori recommended all the essentials + a variety of food! It was really convenient that the store had a huge selection of cat food, toys and litters. This review is about donating to PetMAC. I've been coming to the store itself for a long time- since they were in their other location around the corner- and I love what they do. Selling quality pet food and pet care products at good prices while running a feline rescue is good work in my book! I bought a stainless steel pet drinking fountain there that I couldn't find *anywhere* else, too. In years past, I've donated supplies my kitty outgrew and had no problems. But when I took my furry friend's belongings there after she passed away, I was very take aback at how I was treated. I called ahead and asked if they wanted donations, and if the things I had would be useful to them. I got a yes- and very sweet condolences on the loss of my girl of 19 years. And so I loaded up the car and stopped by the next day. There was a customer at the counter and only one employee in the store (that I saw), so I said I'd wait, that I wasn't in a hurry. But the person at the counter addressed me anyway, maybe because I had my arms full of litter boxes, toys, litter mats, etc. But the way she addressed me! She said that things looked dirty and she didn't want to take time to clean them, and not in a nice way. I explained I had lost my friend, and I had cleaned them about all I could, and they could keep them or not, but would they like the toys, piddle pads, and other things? She sent me to the office, and now I'm wandering looking for the right place and feeling like I shouldn't have come. She follows me in after a minute (leaving the customer?), hands me a bag to put the things into in a brusque manner, and walks out. I left a few things, but took the rest with me. I didn't bother to bring in the second armload of kitty beds, new litter, etc. And I didn't feel good leaving. I volunteer with a couple of places where we accept donations from the public. We are always courteous, no matter if we can use what they give us or not- because when it comes down to it, they thought of us and went to the trouble to come to us. They gave us a gift! Sometimes we have to clean that gift, repair that gift...and sometimes they hit the garbage, unfortunately. But we always say thank you, regardless. "Thank you for thinking of us." "Thank you for going to the trouble." I love what they do at PetMAC. But this time, I didn't love how they did it. read more

Been here a couple times. It's a small boutique with lots of natural pet food and has lots of great stuff. Prices are cheaper than the big pet stores. The staff are very friendly. For all cat lovers and pet owners, this is the coolest store in DC. They have fluffy cats roaming the establishment waiting to be adopted. It's a surprise they don't eat all the treats and play with all the toys. There is a good supply of healthy and grain free cat/dog food. Unfortunately, the store is quite small and products are slightly overpriced but the staff members are super friendly. It is a good place to splurge on your cat, dog or other loving pets. While I did not get to meet the owner, the guy working today was very nice and knowledgeable. PetMac has high quality dog and cat food at non-inflated prices. While they may not carry every top brand, they are more than happy to order it for you. I got my guy his favorite treat (really a bribe to get his insulin shot over with quickly): raw meat medallions. They only carry the small (12ct) bag and not the regular 48ct, but as I mentioned, will order foods for you. They have a loyalty program so after you spend $250, you'll get a discount on your next purchase. Another selling point as Pete L. mentioned is their charitable donations to pet rescues. I can't say enough good things about this place. Not only is this locally owned, the owners are also skilled in all things pet-related!! I can go in and buy any cat toy and know with 100% certainty that it has been vet reviewed & approved. You would think that they would have higher prices since they have to compete with other large chains in the area, but it's quite the opposite. I'm getting boutique level food, toys, and litter at cheaper prices than your typical brands you find at the grocery store. Amazing! Grain-free food that doesn't kill my bank account. Street parking is usually very easy to find & they're great about returns! Extra perk: they host cat adoptions here! They work closely with Pets Bring Joy (PBJ) who made adopting my bundles of fluff super easy. Plus they happily allow you to bring your (well-behaved) pet with you into the store. A portion of all sales goes directly to saving homeless animals, so you are shopping with a mission here! So far, so good! I only had ten minutes on the meter to check out PetMac, which I was referred to by my hometown pet food store for a particular type of food for my pretty kitty. Little Girl has a sensitive stomach, and can't eat anything with grain. While at my parent's house, I tried out a new food, Acana, and was told I could pick it up here at PetMac. First impression: teeny tiny itty bitty! But, they do well on space here. Everything is packed in pretty tight, and I was there when they were unloading a shipment, but they were very courteous of me browsing in their way. (Oops, sorry!) When I picked up the food I wanted to try in a new flavor, the woman asked if my cat had eaten Acana before. When I explained that yes, she seems to like it, but would try to "cover" the fish flavored food, she said that the chicken was another neutral scented food that would be much gentler on her stomach than other foods. At checkout, the same woman (who turns out to be the coordinator with Homeward Trails rescue) explained to me their participation with the program and that they often have cats in store for adoptions and are always looking for volunteers, donations or fosters. Hmmm, verrry interesting.... Anyway, I am keeping this little shop in mind. It is super close to home, and if this flavor of Acana works for Kitty, I will be back. =) read more

Since I moved from San Francisco I have gone here . I like that they had a rescue and they were a quirky little family owned business. Last time I went in I was treated with a great deal of hostility when buying food for my dog. The associate was pleasant until she looked up and saw I am African American. She became hostile and watchful in a way that made it clear she didn't want me in the store. I called to let the owner know about the experience. Instead of letting me finish she interrupted, began defending the woman and making it seem I was making things up. She interrupted me every time I tried to explain what happened and how it made me feel. She began telling me the associates children play with black children and they have black customers all the time.... blah blah . She also said they are surprised at how many "black people shop at their store given the neighborhood, they must be driving in because its not a black neighborhood..." Their words not mine She basically didn't let me finish and made it seem like I'm the problem . I got so upset I said " well I have told you what she is you can take it however you want but I will never shop there again". So thanks for silencing me as I told you about your racist sales associate, I will never shop there again and I will tell everyone I know with a Pet not to shop there . I will not support racist micro aggression no matter who the aggressor 's children play with. read more

I had a good experience at PetMAC. I'm new to the area so I stumbled across the store, it's a little cramped but it stocks high quality products for reasonable prices. I asked the lady for some help and she showed me where all the products were (instead of just telling me where to look, which I appreciate). The employees are pet lovers and they welcome on leash dogs in the store--which encourages me to walk there with my pooch. Staff was rude...my husband held the door for one employee who was carrying a ladder and she didn't say thank you, but made it clear she would have run him down if he hadn't held the door. This shop may be smaller than those chain pet stores but they've got everything you may desire for your furry loved one! Prices are often cheaper than the big pet stores, too! I wouldn't trust Petsmart or Petco to size a collar or halter but the staff at PetMac are trained and intelligent. Added plus is that they carry the biodegradable dog poopy bags - most of the chains have stopped carrying biodegradables for some unexplained reason....guess they don't want to help the planet, eh? My favorite pet store! I have been coming to PetMac at Fessenden Street for 5-6 years. Being an European I appreciate relationship between clients and owners very much. When my cat got lost I was offered efficient help and some hugs. It counts! Now I moved 3 miles away but still coming to "my" store. Lori and Janice plus all helpers are very knowledgeable, helpful and simply nice. There is a good selection of food (they do not sell "junk food" for pets), litter, toys, whatever you want. There are discounts offered. And there is a great adoption center. Animals are healthy, kept in great conditions (mostly foster homes). The place is highly recommended. And money is not the most important for the owners. There are not so many places that I got this kind of advice (trying to trap my cat): Don't buy expensive food here, buy the cheapest one now. It worked - my cat came back home and I am back at PetMac. read more

This was a great store, bright, roomy, cheery. Good quality products. Staff was helpful and informative. The store recently moved around the corner into a dark, cramped location hidden behind Graffiti's façade. (Why?) It's difficult to locate anything (though it's obvious there is less inventory than before) and the staff seems to prefer hanging out behind the counter, which is stuck at the back of the store. The best thing at PetMAC is visiting the kittens. It's seems the place is on its last legs, which is too bad. read more

I stopped in at PetMac today because I was in the neighborhood and in need of cat food. The woman who was working was very knowledgeable, attentive, and helpful, without being pushy. I am guessing she was the owner of the store. When she rang me up I didn't even have a chance to ask about a case discount before she told me that if I bought two more cans I could get the 5% case discount. She also told me about the loyalty rewards program--after you've spent $250 there your next purchase is 10% off. Not the biggest reward, perhaps, but better than nothing and better than any of the other quality pet stores in town that I've been to! I thought the prices were good and I also like that the store was simple and unpretentious while the foods were quality (as in healthy) brands. Even though it's a couple miles from home I'm definitely going to keep it in mind next time I need pet supplies or food! read more

A great store! Everything they carry is high quality. A great variety of healthy choices for cats and dogs. My dogs love going there and the cats love the food, especially the Weruva. Almost anything else you could need, a variety of dog and cat beds, collars, leashes and toys. If they don't have it, they'll offer to order it for you. Everyone there is so friendly. They even have foster cats in the store that a local rescue group has rescued. read more

The beauty about this place is: it's SMALLER than all the other conventional mainstream pet stores. Every single item on the shelf is specifically selected by the store owners. How can I tell? I will ask about how their pets will like the treats or toys and they will always have some stories to share with me. Another plus is majority of the products sold in this store can be hardly seen in the bigger store. Last but really not the least, every Sunday afternoon, they hold the adoption events for both cats and dogs.
