Although Pets Are Home did not carry the food that I typically purchase for my dog, they do have a nice selection of yummy organic dog treats. Also, it's nice to support local businesses even with small purchases. Since Pets Are Home probably doesn't have the backing of a multi-million dollar corporation, the store is a bit smaller compared to your typically PetSmart and Petco spots. However, Pets Are Home definately has more charm than the two places that I mentioned. Overall, I thought the staff were super friendly and helpful. While I probably will not visit too frequently, I definitely hope to drop by from time to time to load up on some fun treats and speciality doggie biscuits for our pup. One slight inconvenience, which is not the fault of the store, the parking is bit tight in this small shopping center. *The parking situation seems to be a bit of a problem in this area.* So it might be best to visit during off peak hours. read more

I stopped by in search of a comb/brush and detangler spray for my cat. She's almost 7 years old and just got her first mat. I've always thought of her as having a short coat, so it took me a day to realize why she had a wet spot on her back-I thought she was just grooming or play fighting with her brother. Once I found the mat, I wanted to remove it as quickly as possible. I stopped in after work, there was plenty of parking. The staff asked if I was looking for something in particular and when I told them, they led me upstairs to the brushes and recommended one that had thin metal bristles that can work through mats. When I asked about detangler, they selected one from the shelf, verified that cats can use it and then helped me check out. It was a quick and productive visit. I appreciated not having to make any decisions after a long day of work. When I got home, I used the detangler per the instructions and then brushed my cat in two sessions getting all of the mats out. There were three small mats and luckily they came out with maybe 20 minutes total of brushing. I'm relieved that my cat is relieved and I would recommend this store to anyone with pets. read more

Pets Are Home is a great independent pet food store. We stopped by on a whim about a year ago, not really needing anything pressing or having any big expectations. Nathan immediately greeted us and started consulting with us on our dog's needs. We were so surprised because I've never experienced service like that. Rusty was getting older, had some kidney issues and rejected the food the vet prescribed. Nathan made a few recommendations and we left with some free samples. Thank you, Nathan! We are grateful and are loyal customers. Unfortunately, we lost Rusty earlier this year, but we continue to visit Pets Are Home weekly with our new pup, Skywalker. Nate and team are amongst the best that I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and working with to ensure I'm meeting the needs of my dog. From my first visit to my most recent they have provided me with beyond helpful guidance and advice, especially when I was looking to solve some of my dogs allergy needs with a food change. Nice looking store with good products, but the customers seemed to be nicer than the employees working there. Recently, my wife and I brought my dog with me as an enrichment opportunity and to meet new people. When we were inside the store, we were shown a hello from one of the girls behind the counter but that was the only interaction. There was a couple picking out treats next to us for their pet while I was looking around. The couple said hi to our dog, told her how cute she was, was petting her and everything, while the girl behind the counter didn't even acknowledge her. After we got our bag of food with treats and were checking out, all I was asked was if I had a phone number for rewards. Again, no acknowledgment of my dog or if we found everything okay. Another customer walked in as we were being rung up and gave my friendly dog lots of pets, asked for her name, etc. As we were leaving, we saw something else we wanted and got back in line to buy it. But when we did, we were met with what seemed like slight irritation of wanting to purchase something else. We apologized and said our dog loves these treats but didn't see them the first time around. We paid for our stuff and left. Although the overall experience wasn't terrible, it also wasn't warm and welcoming. My dog is a small, sweet and fluffy Shihpoo who wants nothing more than to say hi to people. We were excited to have a new specialty pet store open near us with better treat and food options, but we're disappointed by the service. We do understand everyone has an off day and may try again later down the road. For now, we'll stick with going to Wag N' Wash in Bethesda for our specialty treats instead. read more

About two years ago I had two 16-year old doggies die within six months of each other, but for the last year of their lives, the folks at Pets Are Home recommended items that helped keep them healthy, comfortable,, and also provided them with things they loved (most notably, a recommended chew toy for my German Shep that she spent her last months absolutely loving. And for my other dog, goat milk, which I never would've purchased without their guidance. My aussie wouldn't eat anything the last few days of her life - the milk honestly made her so happy and her tummy more comfortable). Since those dogs have passed away, I've fostered a lot of sick animals, many puppies dying from parvo, kittens that won't eat, etc. and I swear recommendations from Nate have saved so many lives. Just yesterday I went in with a desperate plea - three kittens full of worms and had just started medication, but hadn't eaten anything significant in three days and were wasting away. We stopped in thinking this would be a typical small pet supply store, we were immediately greeted by Nate, one of the owners. He asked about our pet and we told him about our 13 year old dog Rusty and some of the health issues he is starting to see. Nate was so engaged and had great recommendations, sending us home with samples. The products they carry are the absolute best quality I have ever come across!! We went back with our dog to pick up some of the food we had gotten samples of. Gabe was working and was just as friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about pets and pet care! I bought 2 harnesses and leashes for my cats travel. I told the Cashier there that my cats were about 10lbs and he recommended me this small size. After I tried one on my cats, it was too small and I went back to request return or change to something else or another size. But they told me it was a final sale item and they could do both about it. When I wee buying it, they didn't tell me that it can't be returned or change in case the size not workable and they recommended this size. They were hidden in 2nd floor and wu believe they just tried to get rid of some not good sale stuff. They don't try to sell you on the most expensive (unless of course it's absolutely necessary for your dog.) You can tell everyone that works there genuinely cares about dogs. The selection is large, and during my first visit I was assisted and checked out by a very nice young woman with curly hair. However, the 2 times that I have come in after, the staff was dismissive and rude, seeming to care more for their conversation than anything else. I went into the Rockville location and Courtney helped me, she was very knowledgeable and helped me so much. my dog has a very sensitive stomach and is prone to diarrhea. She helped me get her off of dry kibble and onto small batch food for my dog and made several other suggestions that have improved her health tremendously. She no longer has diarrhea, and she's now able to have some treats that Courtney thoughtfully picked out for her. I am so happy and have been back three times sense to replenish the food treats and sprouted seeds she recommended for me. I can't say enough about Pets Are Home. Being a pet owner to two aging pets with special dietary needs that developed over the last year has been hard. Gabe, Nate, and Griselda go out of their way to accommodate their customers. Here's an example. I ordered two cases of food to be delivered earlier this week. I got a phone call that the delivery would delayed by a day, but was told to call if I had to have food that evening. It was delivered the next morning by 7:00 am! When I arranged that delivery, my dog had recently passed away, and I mentioned that to Griselda. She was so kind and included a generous number of complimentary treats for my cat with the food delivery. Griselda has a gift for working with customers and she is an absolute gem. The manager helped me select the correct brand I was looking for after a sub par description on my part, carried it to the check out line and even did an ingredients comparison across the other brand of food I use. While this store doesn't offer any specific discounts, you'll find yourself saving 10-20% compared to shopping at larger online stores. If you live locally, they even offer an autoship program for your favorite bag of pet food (and will actually let you know if your item is out of stock!). We were sad to see our beloved Whole Pet Central close, but Pets Are Home is even better! We are crazy dog parents who are obsessive about feeding our pups the healthiest foods and treats. One of our babies suffers from extensive food allergies and environmental allergies, coupled with extreme anxiety. Partnering with a holistic pet store is essential for us in caring for her and her sister. We have always had that partnership at Whole Pet Central and now we're confident that we have it at Pets Are Home! On our very first visit, Nate, the owner took the time to understand our baby's allergies and showed genuine concern. When we inquired about single-ingredient treats that we need to purchase that he doesn't currently carry, he immediately wrote them down and vowed to research carrying them.
