I came here during Farmer's Market on Tuesday. I ran out of cash and came into the restaurant to eat. I ordered the chicken shwarma. Lots of tender, nicely flavored chicken. I also ordered a side of tabouli. It too was made well; lots of fresh parsely, olive oil and lemon juice. I always like to add this to the inside of my schwarma. A large pita was used and I'm used to a lavash wrap. It quicky fell apart. I don't know if it wasn't heated enough or old. I asked for extra tahini sauce. It was really watered down and tasteless. I'm going to mention that to the owner next time I see him. I plan to try his place in PG. It has a bigger menu but if I'm downtown, I'll stop in and try another dish on the menu. read more

Delicious food, love this place. This place is a whole in the wall, serves food on paper plates and plastic utensils. But the passion behind the food and the business is clear. We ordered the lentil soup, a side of hummus and pita, and a falafel. The soup was hearty/healthy and reminds me of home. The falafel was unlike one I have ever had before but very tasty. The gyro sandwich was good better than most I've had from other places. When I first had the Turkish coffee it was fantastic. I've ordered it two other times since then but it hasn't been as good. Wonderfully fresh Mediterranean food! I had the beef Kefta Kabob sandwich and it was delicious. Hot off the grill on a super soft flatbread with the fixings of tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce with a yogurt sauce. The cost was 8.95 and it was just right, for the quality and quantity. Excellent gyro! We went with my wife and parents because another restaurant was closed. I had heard some great things about this place and it did not disappoint! I got the gyro and my wife got a chicken kabob and they were both wonderful! Mine came with a salad and she got fries. My parents both ordered falafel and thoroughly enjoyed them. The owner was very nice and personally moved tables for us to be able to sit. He even closed the door when my mom got cold. Great food and friendly service. I used to cook Mediterranean food before, and this place does a fantastic job even for a picky eater like myself. Petra Cafe is conveniently located in downtown Monterey on Alvarado street and they offer a wide variety of combos of the Mediterranean variety. Great quick Greek food on Alvarado Street. Everything was the way it should be at a good Greek place: Gyro meat was flavorful, well-spiced, moist, and crisp on the edges; veggies were super fresh and tsatziki was really thick and delicious. Prices were good for location and portions. We ordered and sat at the tables outside, enjoyed Alvarado Street while waited for our food. The Petra Platter was big enough for me to share with my kids, hub's gyro combo was really good and came with a super fresh Greek salad. We got some baklava right at the end for something sweet with our coffee for the road, and I thought it was really good baklava (hubs only likes pistachio kind and theirs is predominantly walnut, which I like) that had great walnut flavor and was nice and sweet but not the kind where it's drenched and you only taste honey water. I had high hopes and was NOT let down. Perhaps the other reviewer has never lived in the mediterranean or middle east, but this is quite authentic fare. Falafel was crisp on outside tender inside, tahini was creamy and flavorful, and other ingredients were very fresh and delicious! Highly recommended, for sure. I decided to go for a vegetarian platter for lunch yesterday. First off, the owner was friendly and helpful. I ordered, had a seat and waited for my lunch. Everything on the platter was delicious. I love this place and usually eat here when I go to Tuesday Market. I always get the same thing, so this rating is only for the gyro plate. Its awesome, every time. $10 for a gyro, fries that come from the freezer, and a can of soda is a bit much, but the gyro is incredible, so whatever. This is my favourite restaurant in Monterey. I come from San Diego, and I have tasted my way all along the west coast. The only thing better than the food here is the service. For me the best meal of the weekend! The gyro was great tasting with generous amounts of meat. The salad with the dressing was amazing. Thus place is delicious!! The owner is very friendly and helpful. I really liked the veggie falafel sandwich and while waiting chatted with a local who eats here fairly often.
