We had a nice dinner at Petra restaurant. They don't have a lot but there was parking on the street out front. The service was pretty fast. All of the entrees come with a Greek salad and freshly made pita, that was steaming hot when served. I got the mixed vegetarian plate that had some eggplant dip, hummus, falafel, tabbouleh, and dolmas. The dolmas were really good. Everything else was pretty good. I think I'm kind of spoiled because there are so many great middle-Eastern and Greek places in San Jose, and this place was pretty good but I can get better around where I live! This restaurant is tucked in a corner in Pacific Grove, so unless you're looking you might not find it. I happened to be looking specifically for Mediterranean food and most the spots in the area are not great, so decided to give them a try. The interior is clean but a bit dated. Which doesn't matter at all to me, if the food is good. They have REAL chicken gyro. Not chunked, shredded or cubed but actual chicken gyro style slices. The pita bread they serve it on is soft and fresh and their taziki sauce is great. I recommend getting a salad on the side because they have the BEST Greek dressing ever! I get an extra one to put on my gyro lol Service was very good as well. Highly recommend trying them out. I was told that the Patra Cafe in Monterey doesn't have the same owner but it's the same food....never been to that one so not sure how they are. read more

Used to be my go-to place when in Pacific Grove. I've probably been going here for 25 years or so, but this last time wasn't very appealing at all. My lunch was edible, but not great. My sister's falafel was over cooked, yet bland tasting and the sauce was also. My wife didn't enjoy her lunch either. Too bad, as they used to be extremely good. read more

This place is fantastic. Hands down don't miss going here when in town if you like Mediterranean food. Service was great. Ambiance is super cute and authentic. We had Gyro pita and chicken pita. The whole restaurant was very clean and decorated with various ambiguously Mediterranean objects. Service was slow tonight. There was just one server, who was also doubling as greeter/host, for the entire restaurant tonight. He was pleasant and helpful when he was able to attend to us. However, he was rarely able to find time to check on us. The meats and dolma in the Petra Combination Platter were very dry. The rice was good. The tabouli was not very finely chopped like you might find in the Middle East and Mediterranean. The hummus had almost no tahina and was very garbanzo heavy. read more

This place was amazing! Even though the restaurant appears old and just like someone's house, it's very inviting and so cozy. The food was so good and tasted so fresh. Nice restaurant and setting in Pacific Grove. Casual. We had a couple of appetizers and they were pretty tasty. The service was good and friendly. Food was so-so. Had them take my soup back because it was without flavor. When we asked for the rest of our sandwich (which was good) to be packed up to go, the waitress accidentally threw it away. BTW the fries are great. I asked for a refund since our food was thrown away and was told no by the manager they would make another one and that I have been complaining since I came in. Also, noticed no one was in there the entire time we were eating. Would not recommend this restaurant. read more

Looking for a good casual place in Pacific Grove. After reviewing yelp reviews giving it a 4.2 and over 250 reviews we decided give this place a shot. I had actually ordered take away a few years ago during covid and wasn't impressed but yelp sucked me back in. Walking into the place it definitely needs a face-lift. I almost walked out thinking if they dont care about the decor what do they care about the food. We were greeted by a very nice server and decided to stay. The restaurant is not cozy as other reviews state, its just dated and mix matched furniture. The menu is decent and we ordered a Gyro plate and sandwich. It probably was on par with nick the greeks, franchise place but double the price. I want to support local but cant support local if they refuse to look inwards and see their restaurant needs to be updated and food needs to be more dynamic then a fast food franchise. read more

Came here with some colleagues and the food was good. My friend recommended the lamb kebabs. They weee a little over cooked for me, but I do like my meat med to rare. Though the seasoning was perfect. Their rice was delicious. I substituted fries for the veggies. The service was great. The you lady was very patient with our group of 9. Was visiting the area as we do a few times a year and we always try to find local, family owned restaurants to support. The downtown area where this place is seems like a passage thru time 20 years ago. Very cool area to window shop and just walk around. While my family was at a coffee joint I started wondering around. Walked in here and it feels like you're in a large home living room. They have a tiny bar area that seats 4 people. I sat, next to a woman who said she frequents this place almost daily. we had a great chat and she claimed the food was delicious and since I have food restrictions, she promised the family owned restaurant would cater to waterer they may be. As I sat there it was obvious brothers and sisters run this place. They would banter and each had their own distinct personality, including a grumpy one. LOL. I decided it was getting close to dinner time and text my family that I had found where we will be eating dinner. We sat at a table and ordered a large Hawaiian pizza, thin crust. Chicken kabobs, wife ordered fettuccini while daughter ordered a spaghetti plate. When the pizza was delivered, we realized we may have ordered more food than we could handle. The pizza was delicious and best part of the meal. Both wife and daughter loved their food and we also had some drinks that were properly made. The service was perfect. the only thing I wasn't a fan of were the chicken kabobs. Very salty and dry, but it's not uncommon for kabobs to be that way. I just wasn't a fan. At the end of dinner they brought out a scoop of ice cream with whipped cream that was a perfect palate cleanser. We loved it here, we felt the food was delicious and the price wasn't ridiculous. We will definitely return when we are in the area again. read more

While vacationing in the Monterey Bay Area we all felt like Greek food and found this place based on their Yelp reviews. We all wanted something light and ordered their gyro sandwich and the lamb Kendra kabob sandwich with a Greek side salad. Hit the spot ! The sandwiches are a good portion size with lots of meat and the salad was a perfect match to our dinner. They must be short staffed because service was a bit slow and our server seemed a bit stressed and unfriendly. I did not mark them down for this but thought I would mention it to let management/owner know the customers are feeling their frustration and it is affecting the quality of service and total dining experience. read more

GREEK FOOD:We ordered takeout a few weeks ago when we were in Monterey. They are the sister restaurant to the one downtown . I still prefer the downtown location on Alvarado street at the gentleman is amazing . Nonetheless we got a huge Greek salad, pita bread with baba ghanouj. Unfortunately it wasn't as good last time . Neat location, super friendly hostess and waitress. However, that was where the good stuff ended. I ordered the three dip sampler and was disappointed at all three. The baba ganoush had no smoke flavor at all. The tzatziki and hummus were bland: garlic capitol is only a few miles away and yet none to be tasted. I was genuinely surprised that at least one of them wasn't very good. Hoping things got better, I ordered the gyro plate. To its credit, it did taste and look locally made. Unfortunately I don't think it was sliced to order as it came out tasting greasy like it had sat in the bottom of a warning pan for awhile. The positive ratings and the staff leave me to believe that maybe I just had a bad experience, but I had four dishes and none of them impressed. I hope others have better experiences read more

Delicious. We had mujadara and the Petra platter. This is my favorite type of food so my standards are high -- the flavors were perfect. The caramelized onions on mujadara were amazing, tangy tomatoes an ideal complement, really great yogurt sauce that was like a blend of labneh and tzatziki. Our server John was also great. The setting is very pleasant, charming art and a family-run vibe. We will be back! read more

I was out in Pacific Grove for a day trip and after a long walk it was time to find some grub. I was in the mood for something Mediterranean and I hadn't had a good gyro for awhile, so after searching on Yelp I came across Petra. It's a few minutes' walk from the busy part of Lighthouse. Their outdoor space is pretty limited but they have a couple of 2-top tables at the front entrance - one at street level and one at the top of the stairs (beside a chair lift, so the entrance is accessible). They're being very cautious with COVID protocols, all wearing masks and gloves and they request that diners also wear their mask until they eat. They are also providing takeout. The server came out to greet me and got me seated with the menu and was quick to come back for my order - a lamb gyro and fries. She said it'd take 15 minutes but it was more like 10. The food came out super hot and fresh. The gyro was stacked with flavorful, tender lamb, just the right amount of sauce, and some lettuce, tomato and red onion. All very fresh. The lamb was well-seasoned and easy to eat. The wrap was nice and warm and fluffy, really nice texture to it. The fries were lightly seasoned crinkle fries, a really big portion of them, and they were hot, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Everything was delicious. Great spot, I'll definitely be back sometime to try the musaka. read more

I really love the whole concept and atmosphere of this cafe, it feels cozy and full of charm. The staff was really friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Service like this always makes a place memorable. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and fresh. Everything tasted homemade and high quality. And the coffee was excellent too! We had requested a view and were about to be accommodated when another staff member (auburn hair) interrupted abruptly and loudly, insisting we not be seated up front due to other reservations. It was uncomfortable and felt unprofessional--especially in front of guests. As it turned out, she was our server. Throughout the evening, her demeanor didn't improve and felt out of step with the otherwise welcoming environment. Having spent over 25 years in the industry and as a restaurant owner, I know how important frontline staff are to the guest experience, and this simply didn't reflect the level this place is capable of. That said, this feels like the exception--not the norm. I've had pleasant experiences here before and will return, hopeful that this was just an off moment.

The only thing they have going for them is the beatiful view of the ocean. Food and beverages were not great and overall poor service and quality.
