My wife and I came here for a casual dinner the first long day of the seminar in Monterey. We had reservations at a fancy place, But we were both tired and this place was close to our hotel. It's a small place with a Mediterranean color scheme. Their menu includes enough variety where you can find something you like. They serve beer and wine, though I didn't see a menu or price list for them. The guy that takes your order brings the food. He was fine. My wife ordered a bowl of lentil soup and a side of hummus. She really liked the hummus. I tasted it and it was creamy and rich. She didn't have enough pita to finish the hummus, but we got her a to go container to bring the rest back to the fridge in the hotel. She thought the soup was fine. It was a bit under seasoned for her and needed salt and pepper. I had a Greek salad topped with gyro meat. The gyro meat appeared to not be the preformed frozen type. It had pieces of different shapes and thicknesses. The meat was tender. It wasn't as strongly flavored as most gyro I've had. But it tasted good. The tzatziki served with it was mostly yogurt, again a little under seasoned. The salad was ok. There was one sliver of red pepper and one of green, some thick red onion partial slices, a few cherry tomatoes, and some feta. The feta tasted pretty good. The dressing was very vinegar forward with few other seasonings. The lettuce was romaine, and 80% were the ribs with attached leaves. The salad was not a great choice. At more than $20 with gyro, was not worth it. It's not about the money. It just wasn't that good. When I saw the small salad was $11 and was served on a 6" diameter plate, I should have reconsidered my choice. The real reason this gets no more than a 3 is that it was freezing inside. It was about 50 outside and inside. The order/server guy was bundled up. The temperature was not pleasant. So the food was mostly just ok (except the hummus), it was freezing inside, and the service was fine. How is that more than a 3?

I've walked by this place many times and kind of wanted to try it, so I finally did. The place seemed very dingy, but I wanted to give it a chance. I had high hopes, but I was really disappointed. I ordered the chicken shawarma bowl , and for $20 I was shocked at how small the portion was -- maybe six small pieces of chicken in a tiny bowl. The chicken was horribly seasoned and super dry, and the rice wasn't much better. I honestly don't even know what to call it. I left still hungry and feeling like I completely wasted my money. The best thing I had was the Dr. Pepper -- because they didn't make it. I would walk a block down the street and go to Nick the Greek instead. This place is not worth it. Save your money.

A great Mediterranean spot for casual eats that's located in a busy downtown street with many other shops! The Petra combination is a great way to try two different meats. The tzatziki was delicious and complemented the meats well, and the kafta kabab was seasoned well. The cashier was also very friendly and help clean out our plates after we finished eating. Overall I'd recommend it!

for the tzatziki alone, 5 stars. it was soooo delicious!! i thought I didn't like tzatziki sauce but thanks to Petra cafe, i think i love it the meats were also pretty delicious, esp when paired with both the hummus and tzatziki. the salads are also great for adding some fiber to ur diet~ we were craving something light for dinner and this was the perfect spot. the pita bread was a little bit dry and thin, not what I'm used to but still does the job nonetheless. i would come back solely for the tzatziki :) service is order at the counter and they'll bring out the food to you if you choose to dine in. the inside is pretty small! just a handful of tables. its right in the middle of downtown Monterey so theres much to explore after you're done eating

This is a nice place. The food cost is high, and I was surprised it was about $50 for two meals and rice. Especially because it's a small place. I was also surprised that my receipt for each item was higher than what is listed on the menu. In addition, $7 for a side of rice seems excessive. The cashier was polite and the food came out fairly quickly. For a Thursday evening at 7pm there weren't any other patrons and I wonder if it was the chilly evening or the high prices. Over all the vegetarian combo was good. The fish and chips were ok - not great like a fish place but ok. The pita bread was from a store and a bit stale. The stuffed grape leaves were ok. The hummus was really good. I wonder if the y lowered the prices a little and maybe had some specials, people might be willing to go there for a meal. But with the high price I probably won't be going again.

Was looking for a quick healthyish bite in the area and decided to stop by here. Ordered a Falafael sandwich combo with fries, Petra combination platter and a small baba ghanouj (comes with pita). The gyro was a bit on the salty side and wasn't a big fan of their grape leaf. The falafel and baba ghanouj were solid and their pita has a nice texture. Overall, flavors were fine, but nothing special. It's not a bad place to pop by for a quick bite, but wouldn't seek it out.

Great little spot in downtown Monterey. The Mediterranean food was excellent. The Gyro combo plate was spot on with a soda for a bit $15. I think this is my favorite in downtown Monterey for lunch/dinner. It is simple and very good.

I wish there was a way to give someone less than one star this restaurant definitely deserves it, I'm guessing there's two pricing structures depending on who you are we went there and looked at a combo that would have cost $13.25 but when time came to pay for it the total was over $25, how in the hell do you get $12 additional the owners reply was its tax.....90,% tax rate! Come on and stop, for a gyro, a side salad and a can of soda. Tonight was let's see if we can overcharged a fool, and sorry I do know math and I don't do business with places that are unethical and try to deliberately steal money from their customers in hopes they won't question the total for their items. Do yourself a favor and leave the long line for the grill across the street and come here like we did! The food is incredible--the pita for the gyros is hot and pillowy, the meat is perfectly spiced. The baklava tastes like a Grecian wedding in a rose garden. And the owner is so sweet, we tried to leave a big tip and he chased us out the store to give us change back (even after he gave us an extra baklava). We'll definitely come back next time we're in town! read more

We were looking for something light to eat that we could share and saw "Petra". We got a Gyro Combination Platter and a side of Babaganoush. It was delicious and enough to split between me and my gf. The server was also very attentive and funny. I would definitely return to Petra over and over. read more

So first I have to say I that have family from the Middle East and have travelled lots. I came with two others and we had the chicken shawarma wrap, falafel wrap and chicken platter and a side of tabbouleh. While you may be "put off" at first appearances it is worth it. Exceptional flavor and preparation. Platter worth it as fresh salad has authentic Greek olives and plenty of quality feta. Bread is light and fresh and crisp. Tabbouleh prepared well, fresh and well presented. Need work on the dining area maybe more tables with a refresh. Turkish coffee was odd. Overall very worth it! read more

Do NOT underestimate this place! A great spot for dinner if you are going solo, a small group of 4 or less, or going for take-out. The food was delicious for my family of 5. We lucked out on a Friday night when we were able to walk up with no wait, order and receive our food immediately. The owner was SO very nice and accommodating our 2 young kids too. At the end, he surprised them with macaroons when they finished all their dinner :) We got the Lentil soup, Greek salads, grilled chicken and rice for the kids and gyro for me. All Excellent! Highly recommend! read more

Good food for the price. First off, this is a fast casual restaurant. Had the chicken kabob platter with salad and rice. Chicken was evenly cooked. Yep be had kabobs elsewhere that weren't cooked thoroughly. Falafel was nice. read more

This spot is delicious, it's got the best gyros in the Bay Area. There is outdoor seating or you can get it to go. The fries are a monster portion and the hummus is super creamy. The pita was fresh and fluffy. I would have liked a tiny bit more white sauce on my gyro but I like excess sauce; next time I'll ask for extra sauce. read more

Good food; decent portions; very Mediterranean and Iranic flavors and decor; quick and friendly service. Outside seating on tent avaiable. The only big draw back is they take ONLY CASH. They even tell you where the nearby ATMs are. In a day and age of electronic transfers, CASH ONLY seemed so medieval. Also, wondering what happens to the Sales Tax they collect. And hence the lower rating. read more

This place is incredible. Absolutely authentic and probably the best gyro I have have in the last 2 years. What a great find! The restaurant itself is pretty tiny looking from the outside so it can be hard to miss but it's definitely worth a try. The employees were super nice and the gyro meat is amazing...street parking. I wish I lived closer so I could eat here more often!!! read more

This Mediterranean cafe is a stand out from all the restaurants on this street in Monterey. The food is delicious, the service is great, price is reasonable, even for Covid times, servings are generous. We get the grilled chicken platter. 2 feeds the hubby and our two girls. We always stop by here when venturing out to Monterey and the owner is a sweetheart! Feels like a home cooked meal every time. Thank you and see you next time! read more

The food was delicious, I had the chicken gyro sandwich and my step dad (who is gluten-free) had a bbq chicken salad. The owner was knowledge of his gluten allergy and very accommodating. The service couldn't have been better, and we also watched as he provided a meal to someone in need on the street, and even fed the pigeons. This community is lucky to have you! We stopped by Monterey on our way to Big Sur and hoped to find a yummy place for lunch. Boyyy were we in for a pleasant surprise! Don't let appearances fool you: this hole in the wall is mini but mighty! My husband and I both ordered the Petra combo plate. It comes with rice, grape leaves, hummus, tabbouleh, gyro and your choice of kebab. The plates also come with fresh baked pita. The food was SPECTACULAR. I mean, seriously, indescribably delicious. I'd come back for everything, but especially for the pita. It was a taste of homemade goodness made with love. As if my non-existent Greek grandmother had cooked especially for me. Each plate was 16.95 which was a steal for the amount of food we got! We had to ask for a to-go box because we couldn't finish! Wish we had one of these in San Diego! Too bad we didn't take a photo before we started digging in. 10000/10 recommend! read more

Being new to Greek food.. I can only write a review purely based upon if what I ate tasted good or not. Duh! I know what you are thinking...aren't ALL reviews supposed to be based off taste? What I mean in this circumstance...is that not yet having experienced what others would call great...I have no real frame of reference to judge. With that said...all I can say is that Petra is a fun little place. Little is an understatement...hardly larger than the back of a Ford Pinto, (OK, maybe not quite that small, but you get the point.) With interesting decor...I'm refer to the photo I uploaded of the fish tank sitting atop an Amish fake fireplace. The staff was friendly...if a bit inept. I say this only due to their making a mistake with our order. I ordered the Beef and Lamb shawarma plate...my daughter ordered the Chicken shawarma gyro...we got two Chicken shawarma gyros brought to the table. Now...they quickly admitted to their mistake and wanted to make the item I ordered...I felt sad for them...and in truth didn't want to wait another 15mins for the food. So, finally we get to the only thing I can comment on food wise. The Chicken shawarma gyros were tasty. I will go here again. My daughter on the other hand said they were on the dry side...and thought the chicken was overcooked. I didn't taste her sandwich....but from what I could tell...her sandwich had mostly white meat, where as mine had almost entirely thigh meat...which is usually more moist than white meat. I was craving a wrap and immediatelty Petra's came to mind. I got the chicken gyro sandwich combination. Thinly sliced chicken with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mint sauce packed in a warm pita wrap. Delicious! Comes with fries and drink for $9.25. I couldn't resist the fresh baklava and chocolate macaroons....they weren't the best I've had but they were consumed in a couple blinks and perfectly curbed my sweet yearnings:-) I love stopping into Petra's for a quick tasty lunch or dinner. I always walk away very satisfied. read more

My husband and I ended up here after finding multiple restaurants in the area closing. We were hungry and love Mediterranean food, so we decided to give this place a try. I am so glad we did! The restaurant doesn't look like much on the outside, but the food exceeded our expectations. Everything was full of flavor, cooked well, and just absolutely DELICIOUS! The owner came out and checked on us several times, which to me shows dedication to the food and the customers. We will definitely be back anytime we are in the area read more

I have been to this place many times and decided to post a review for it. Every time I go the cashier (an older man) is very attentive and courteous. A few weeks ago I tried the gyro combo platter and loved it. It has a little bit of everything (hummus, grape leaves, gyro, bread) very reasonable price and enough for 2 people. Most importantly the quality of the food is excellent! They have high standards; everything is fresh and it is noticeable. You can almost miss it while walking down the street, but go in and try it! It is a true Mediterranean experience! read more

EVERY time we go to Monterey, we make sure we find time to eat here. I love their chicken gyro sandwich. The sauce is delicious. My favorite thing about it is the chicken is sliced thin-The perfectly portioned bite every time! It's very filling so be ready to have a sleepy afternoon! The french fries are always fresh and just right. It's a small place, but don't let the size bother you. The only negative is I wish they had a soda fountain...they only sell bottled drinks. read more

There is a small amount of seating outside as well! From what I gather this may be a chain in this area, as it is not the only location. (?) don't quote me on that :)

I come here once every couple weeks because I live just up the hill, and I must say it is a fantastic little stop. I have never been left unsatisfied. Hands down the best falafel I have ever eaten, you must try the falafel nuggets if you come here. I saw someone comment on the tahini sauce here and I agree that it seems a little watery however I think the flavor is fine and anymore might be too strong. This is a really great spot. My uncle who lives in the area suggested to our family. Definitely one of our favorite spots here for Mediterranean food. Right in the middle of their downtown.
