I have had Petro oil even since I can remember. I am definitely changing that now. First let's talk about the rip off prices and the inability to explain them. Today's price per gallon with all other oil companies offering the same product: $2.65. I bought full at 2.95. Petro price: $5.25. I have a big house which burns a lot of oil. 500 gal twin tanks of 250 gal each. Let's compare the price during the winter months. Delivery of at least 340 gal. Petro: $1785. Real price: 340 X 2.65 = $901.00. Now think about this bill every two weeks which what in reality happens at my house. $3570 a month as opposed to $1,802. Summer months half a tank full delivery of 150 gal from Domino Fuel: $442.00 Petro: $787.00 for no reason. If I had not just had bad customer service this past week I would have never checked out other companies and would have continued to throw more at Petro time after time. But no more. I called to make payment arrangements during the summer months which I have been doing every year since 1997. Some idiot picked up the phone in the "credit department" and he said on a bill of $1800 he can only offer two payments within one month. I totaled the payments made to this company from December until now they were in excess of $15,000 just for those months. So I looked elsewhere. I put all deliveries on hold and I am now trying Domino Fuel, a small Long Island Company with similar services and much better prices. We will see how that goes. I also noticed a marked change in Petro staff they have more staff now than ever and they don't care about the customers anymore. I saw review here saying "They still deliver oil without notice even if you cancel the auto delivery and they charge you top dollar for it and the contract is worthless in times of desperation there greed takes over, and they still find some sort of emergency fee to tack on". That is true. For some unknown reason after talking to the credit department they insisted thy had to deliver 250 gal of oil when I told them my tank was still half full. BOTTOM LINE PETRO WAS GOOD THEN BUT NOT GOOD NOW. THEIR PRICES ARE EXORBITANT THEIR SERVICE BECAME NO SERVICE AND IT IS JUST NOT WORTH IT!!! I want to update this post as I received a call from Petro's "retention department" from a person named Chris encouraging me to terminate the account and chastising me for this post and asking me if I really ordered oil from Domino Fuel. I told him that if this is his idea of retaining customers he should seek retraining. So now the idea that Petro has is to harass its customers who post on here. I was on the fence about this account but after Chris's self important call I am now with a supervisor on the phone canceling my account. The supervisor is of course not available. The business owner should really teach his/her staff that if you want to retain customers you apologize and make good not chastise the customers because of unhappy experiences. Do they really hire someone in a "retention department"? Try not calling to harass good customers who paid you a lot of money for decades. This company went to the dumps. It used to be good. Believe the recent reviews, Petro is not what it was. I had been with them for over twenty years. Always had to haggle to get a reasonable price for oil, every year. I had a new burner/boiler installed by them and it's fine, price was okay. Called to get a price on replacing the tank on the side of my house, and it was ridiculous. Got it done thousands less with comparable product by Roth. Came time to renew my contract and the oil price was way high. Told them this, said they'd call back, never did. So for the first time in twenty years I'm with a different provider because Petro can't provide competitive prices and call back a customer. Buh-bye. read more

We are a longtime customer over 50 years. We have an oil furnace. I put in a service call at midnight last night because there was no heat or hot water We were told that we would have to wait till today by 1230. Then they said it would be between eight and 12.. after that i was told it would be 9 to 12. The bottom line is there is no service with Petro . And we have a service contract, which means nothing! in the past they would have someone come and help - not anymore!!This is not the first time it's been slowly getting worse! Let me clarify, they will have people answer the phone 24 seven, but the wait time to get actual service is unknown if you have an emergency. I have been a Petro customer for decades. I purchased a hot water heater from them 7+ years ago and they installed it. The heater failed some 5 months past the units warranty. Petro wanted nothing to do with it. No warranty, no prorating for an item that statistically lasts 12-15 years. Their only interest was the potential for a new sale. I had two other reputable estimates for the same item. Their estimates were decidedly less money than Petro's for the EXACT SAME ITEM. Petro subcontracts their installations. I purchased a boiler from Petro. I took the day of installation off. The installers arrived one man short and the two that showed were drunk and incapable of working. They came back the next day and I was forced to take that day off too. They banged and gouged the walls of my home, bringing in the new boiler and removing the old one. When I've called Petro about either of these two incidences, all I got was a run around. No one I spoke to had the interest or authority to do anything. They "forwarded" my complaints to their supervisor(s), never to be heard from again. Small Claims Court seems to be the only alternative, inasmuch as my voiced concerns have apparently fallen on deaf ears! Steer clear, and stay away! Other alternatives!! Update 9/2023. Despite the "form written" response by Mr. David S. Petro has zero interest in providing any support and/or remedy to this situation. 1981 I started using PETRO and have been loyal to the bone with all my properties using this company. My latest oil bill was $ 8.999 per gallon of oil . I called to discuss the bill to learn that they have a loyalty program that you can lock in the oil rate per gallon . I can't believe they felt it unimportant to notify a customer of 40 years that such a program exists. They are very conscientious to bill and follow up on billing but fall short on staying in touch with beneficial programs that are available! I reside in NEWARK DELAWARE not San Francisco, These Morons can't even get my address right. I have been with this company a lot of years, I trusted them and did not check my billing when oil delivered. In March of 2022 I checked the price of heating oil on my delivery slip and it was 5.97.9 per Gallon. With 109.9 gallons the bill was for $657.09. Other oil companies after I called for prices was 4.47.9. It was $1.50 higher per gallon. I'm 83 years old and can do simple math. I was overcharged $153.23 on this delivery. I called customer support and they offered me a measly $75.00 credit, still ripping me off over $78.. I didn't keep any of the older oil receipts, because I trusted them. Late May 2022 I wrote a check for $837.31to pay off their bill in entirety, so I thought. No deliveries since. On June 21, Two men came and serviced my oil burner and AC. They were there between 1 & 2 hours. July 24 I received a $1268.00 bill, 809.85 for their service and $458.15 for "Smart Pay" whatever the hell that is. My wife called Petro Oil today about renewing our Ceiling Plan. She was told the ceiling price for 2024 is $4.599. We consider that is too high. Previously we received an email that said they were delivering oil this week. When my wife tried to get a price for the delivery the representative refused to give her a price. He kept referring to the ceiling price of $5.699 in our 2022-2023 Ceiling plan. When she told him that current prices in Dutchess County are in the $3.55-4.19 he said cost would depend on day on day of delivery and they could not deliver for 3-5 days. This would put delivery at some time after our current Ceiling Plan ends which is 11/30/23. We do not want oil at $5.699!!!!! The Petro Ceiling Plan says that it "limits how high your price may go ... and you may be able to take advantages of lower prices" We don't consider $5.699 to be a competitive market price. As our plan expires 11/30/23 we told them to cancel delivery. They told my wife that if we cancelled delivery we would be billed a $399 cancellation fee. She asked to to speak to a manager at 11:30 AM. As of 2:00PM no one has called. read more

They will lock you in on a great rate at first. After that be prepared to be taken for a financial ride with them constantly charging your ceiling price regardless of market conditions. "We're a full service company with higher operating costs and protections"... ummm your business model is not my problem when it comes to you incessantly calling me to re-sign a contact with you after I have repeatedly said I wasn't interested. Kept saying "I can't possibly list the pamphlet full of benefits to stay with us on the phone... blah blah blah". All while not listening to me and not listing any benefits which I couldn't debunk. Just kept telling me there were so many benefits without actually telling me any. Then came the service plan. They do have a good service plan. I actually would use them just for the plan, but you can't unless you contract with them for overpriced oil delivery. They will indirectly bash competition, even make claims that other companies sell bad oil they reclaim in abandoned tanks... that's quite an accusation. And whenever you talk to them they try to rush you into signing because "oil prices are going to drastically increase". They say it every time. If you sign with them, I guarantee your oil prices will drastically increase after your introductory rate. So glad we are done with them. They are manipulative and aggressive. read more

I signed a contract, locking in an amazing promotional rate in the summer of 2020 for my first home ever. Petro was professional, quick and courteous for all of our interactions for many months, although I feel they talked me out of needing any service check ups when I felt my system needed it. And, I was never charged a penny less than the maximum, which didn't seem right. Before my year's contract was up, I talked to Petro about renwal, and I was quoted a rate I felt was not competitive or reflective of actual prices, and was told the service contract rate was increasing significantly. THEN they topped off my tank, just two days before my contract was up. At that point I asked them to put a hold on everything and to charge me the remaining balance on my account, settle up completely and not renew my contract. I was told no problem, the contract wouldn't be renewed. Instead, my auto pay was doubled. I only found out a MONTH later when my checking account was charged. Then a bill came for the new service contract I never agreed to on top of that. They told me this would be fixed, no problem. ANOTHER month later, I was debited the monthly charge again. This time they told me it was MY fault for not turning off Auto pay on my account, which I had already felt was closed/stopped twice in two months. At this point I asked to close the entire account, I want all my money back, I never agreed to renew in the first place. For days their customer retention team called me, repeatedly, with new offers and discounts, after I had already asked to close the account. Sadly, they STILL didn't offer a competitive price, and kept telling me their direct competition was out to cheat me, which is obviously a lie. I demanded my refund again, still confused why it hadn't already been processed. 3 weeks and the refund has STILL not arrived. I was just told it would be ANOTHER 2-3 weeks because they just "approved" it. Why do I have to wait months to get the money refunded that shouldn't have been charged in the first place? I just had my burner and water heater serviced for the upcoming season by Petro home services. They sent out a gentleman named Steven. He was terrific!!!!! Steven took his time going over all the pieces of the oil burner and water heater ,explaining as he went . He was professional, methodical and meticulous at his job. He gave attention to every part as though it was in his own home . BRAVO Petro for having great customer service and knowledgeable technicians taking care of your customers. Got a postcard in the mail for $125 "free" heating oil with an 877 number. Their phone system is a mess but once you get by that their customer support is worse. Forget getting an answer to any question you might have until they get ALL the answers to their questions. Then comes the high-pressure sales pitch. And while I didn't sign with them my guess is after you sign you experience the bait and switch. There are many automatic oil delivery strategies to prevent delivery companies from losing money eg topping off automatic delivery tanks when the market price drops, etc. so you really need to do your homework on your company. Trust is essential. Talking to Sam (salesperson) or Kim (supervisor) wasn't a confidence builder for trust. I felt like I was talking to people that didn't listen. They were determined to get their points across to someone they viewed as a "beginner". I've been buying oil for 40 years I think I get better service out of my local "fly by night" company than this "full service" company. Glad we got the argument out of the way right from the beginning so I didn't make the mistake of signing with them! Update: As all can see Jenna from Petro responded. The message was not sincere. I followed the directions Jenna provided. I was contacted by a regional manager. However, that manager was unfamiliar with the situation and was not empowered to take any action. Today, my Mother opened an account with Petro. We scheduled a repair man visit to check if everything was good with the machiner. Carey was sent to my location for service On the same day. During Carey's visit, he exhibited an extremely negative attitude and treated my mother with disrespect. His behavior was unbecoming of a representative of your company and left me feeling frustrated and disheartened. I have some proof of his actions recorded by our surveillance cameras. I believe that such behavior is unacceptable and reflects poorly on the reputation of Petro Oil. As a customer for not even 24 hours, I expected to receive courteous and professional service, which was clearly not the case during Carey's visit. This experience has left me questioning the integrity of your company's employees and the quality of service provided. I kindly request a thorough investigation into this matter and appropriate disciplinary action taken against Carey. Additionally, I would appreciate a prompt response from your customer service department addressing my concerns and outlining the steps being taken to prevent such incidents in the future. Avoid the North Haven branch of Petro for Air Conditioning. They installed a Trane 4 ton condenser and air handler in my Hamden, CT home in June 2021. They did a very poor job of installation and post installation support was terrible. Summary of errors at installation: 1) Killed the grass where they staged the equipment for install. 2) Broke bolts when reinstalling vents (and left them that way). 3) Bent existing vent cover. 4) Broke existing heating sensor (cost me $150 with my HVAC supplier to fix). 5) Most importantly they failed Hamden permit inspection. 6) Installation coordinator, Patty, ghosted me when I called four times for status. Unfortunately after this sad experience I am writing this review, On Tuesday Feb 28, my family member was chastised by the Petro repairman. It was during a snowstorm and the repairman began shouting at my handicapped cousin because the driveway was not plowed. Then he shouted at him because he did not answer the phone from an unk number. We contacted customer service and cancelled all service effective immediately. Today March 16, 2023 they made an unauthorized delivery at an exorbitant price I guess this is our punishment. Worst service I've ever have experienced. They wanted to sell me the product, never told me that there was an early termination fee and another penalty for an initial offer they gave me. Had double charges every month, once for the oil they provided (which they never told me they were going to provide before coming. They just came without my knowledge and then I find a high amount bill) and another for an "automatic payment" for 500 that they never could explain. This company is deceptive. That's why they were sued for charging all customers on cap plan the highest amount regardless of oil prices. I signed up with them and agreed to a price for the service plan. Two months later I receive a bill for double that amount. I call and am told I need to speak to a loyalty specialist and one would call me soon. A week later I finally get a call. He essentially calls me a liar and I ask him to simply listen to the recorded call where the price was set. Of course he needs a supervisor to do that. He promises one would look into it and call me. The worst they are trying to force me to replace my oil tank and has since stop delivering. Their service guy the last one claimed I needed one. I had a very small leak 3 yrs ago and never a oil spill this rep was trying to make a deal for them. Oh when they received a check from my heap program they didn't let me know I had credit in my account. In fact I paid for a delivery after that. They delivered heating oil to my house. My contract with Petro is Marked Value. Today they charged me $5.33 per gallon when the market value today is $4.69 per gallon. I spoke with a representative and he told that was Petro's price. That reason for me to stay with Petro is because I believed that they were different, but I find out that I was wrong. They were FREEZING and sick to boot! She had to end up having to contact ANOTHER oil company to fill up her oil tank and she never used Petro again after having been mistreated so badly. She's 70+ years old. How can you treat anyone let alone the elderly like that? Well MONTHS later my mom received a phone call from PETRO claiming that she owes them $1000s and they insisted that they HAD filled up her oil tank back when she kept calling them!  They are crooks and want to swindle my poor mom. My mom reminded them that they never ended up coming to fill her tank and she had to find another oil company. They outright lied and said that they did fill up her tank otherwise why was their truck missing so many gallons of gas, my mom said that is not her problem. She has the bill from the other oil company she used showing the date that they came and the large amount of oil that they put to fill up her entire tank! She told PETRO that she would provide them that proof but they didn't want to hear that they just constantly called her multiple times a day threatening her and harassing her and they have been taking her to court over this and they laugh and think its funny! My mom had a stroke this year over the stress and worry this disgusting oil company has been putting her through. Even the judge doesn't understand Petro's motive because they have spent more on legal fees than what they say that my mother owes them. The court asked PETRO to provide a bill as proof, they gave a bill with SOMEONE ELSE'S NAME ON IT! Do you think they would own up to their error? No! I signed the contract for the fixed price of oil and of course they changed it to the daily rate without my knowledge and overcharged me. I was on the monthly plan to pay the same amount every month and at the end of the year I received a $2,000 bill, so much for balanced billing. When my furnace broke down last winter it took numerous phone calls with long wait times to get someone to come out. I have been a customer for a few years now and seems things are slowly getting worse. I paid a little more to have a ceiling plan that is supposed to lower in the event prices come down during the year, however no matter how much the price drops they still charge me at the top rate. The representatives in the loyalty dept are rude. Spoke to a manager named Walter who was no help at all. You can have graphs, charts, and competitor pricing at your fingertips that they will claim they don't have the ability to receive via email. (just embarrassing) They don't want to see any real data that goes against the B.S. story they are spewing. It never used to be this way but in the past 2 years the only time they valued me as a customer was the day after my contract expired. Honestly, the service department and technicians are very good, and I have never had any negative experiences with them.
