A Melrose institution! Each pizza place is Melrose has very different pizza. Petrone's pizza has a sweet sauce and has a thick base. Delicious! They have the best buffalo chicken calzone I've ever had! Steak tip dinner is yummy and their meatball sub is great! They also make great chicken soup in the colder weather. Staff is friendly and helpful. My mom was sick one time the middle of summer (when they don't make soup) and Lou went out of his way and made my mom a pot of chicken soup. Great customer service and AMAZING food!!!! I highly recommend the small buffalo chicken calzone it is the best I have ever had!! One word of caution is do not get the large always get the small for some reason when you get the bigger size it isn't cooked as well and the melted cheese on top isn't done as well.... so if you need a large get two of the smalls you will not regret this decision!!! Also I have had the Greek salad with steak tips and asked for the tips to be cooked rare low and behold this place actually knows how to cook steak the tips unlike most pizza joints were cooked absolutely perfectly...... again if you like buffalo chicken get the small buffalo chicken calzone you will absolutely not be disappointed!!! Yesterday, I called in an order for Petrone's chicken shish kebab dinner at 5:35. When I got to the store at 6:10, I was told there would be a wait. The order was ready 15 mins later, and the time stamp on the order was 6:10. Leonidas took the order on the phone and forgot it until I arrived. The chicken was disappointing, maybe because they hurried up the late order. Instead of cutting the meat and vegetables in kebabs, they cut long slices. Kebabs should have a charred exterior and tender, marinated center. This wasn't close. The side of rice pilaf was dry. Side salad just ok. Garlic bread was good. Plenty of chicken, but I'll cut up the leftovers and put it in soup tonight. The two stars are for the good meals they've served in the past: buffalo chicken calzones, and steak and cheese subs. I hate Petrone's for their service and food. We used to order from there pretty frequently and, one day, started getting increasingly worse food delivered to our house. It would take too long to arrive and be cold by the time it showed up. I'm not sure what they put in the food, but I always felt gross after eating it (not sure if it was fresh ingredients). One day, I ordered the meatball sub and found two long hairs baked into my sub with a few others just floating around in the sauce. It was repulsive. Wow I have so much to say about Petrone's. Let's just say Petrone's is not only a deli...it's a lifestyle. I went to middle/high school in Melrose and the owner, Leo watched me grow from just a saucy bun to buffalo chicken calzone or a chicken caeser salad. Wow how time flies. I go to college in San Francisco, so I don't get the luxury of having petrone's whenever I see fit. I'm not gonna lie, when I go home if it wasn't for my mom picking me up, I think the Petrone's staff would be the first to people from home I would see. The pizza is five stars there, its not too doughy not to stiff. But I can get pizza any where, what I really ache for when I'm away is the buffalo chicken calzone or the chicken caeser salad with pita bread. OK the buffalo chicken calzone, is the BEST way to eat buffalo style chicken, yes the BEST and it's only at Petrone's. The calzone is stuffed with mozzarella cheese and Buffalo style chicken, that's it. Dip it in some bleu cheese dressing... and I'm gonna say it.. it's orgasmic. Alright, so for those light dinner nights, the chicken caeser salad is the best pick. The caeser dressing if i remember correctly, Leo gets shipped from somewhere, like far away. I don't remember where he said, but it's not something to joke around about, it is the best caeser dressing I've ever had. The grilled chicken that goes on top has the perfect blend of herbs. The pita bread that is on the side, is fresh out of the oven, they bake a new batch probably every hour. You may ask why I know so much...I know because I care... I'm going home in a week and I assure you that Petrone's will be my second meal...that's a promise. Got takeout here one night when we weren't cooking and had to run some errands downtown. Heres the rundown: Location: Downtown Melrose Pizza joint. Looked like one table in the place. Service: Nice guys on the phone and in person. Food: Pepperoni Calzone was greasy as hell (a pool formed underneath the calzone) and was a little lacking in the cheese department. Of course it didn't stop me from eating it. The GREEK Salad was good and had excellent baked pita to go with it. French fries were average, nothing special. Price: 16 dollars, okay. My take: It was my first trip here, so to get a real good idea of whether this goes in the takeout rotation, I'll need to try it again. A solid pizza shop in the Melrose area! Food: They make a really good pizza-- we've gotten a bunch of varieties but I'm a big fan of their cheese. I haven't ever gotten sick (as other reviewers have mentioned). My boyfriend loves their stuffed pita sandwiches, and I've had their chicken caesar salad. All were tasty. Also, I have a food allergy and the staff has been very transparent and concerned about making sure that everything is safe to eat. Yay! Delivery: Granted, we're right down the street, but we've never waited longer than 45 minutes for delivery. Solid stuff! Price: Reasonable and comparable to other pizza places in the area. The buffalo chicken salad is by far the best deal in town and I have no idea how they make their chicken so good. I have eaten ALOT of buffalo chicken and Petrones is at the top of my lost. But something else that makes this place stand out even more is the staff, it's not really necessary to have amazing customer service if your delivering pizza but Petrones has by far the best people running their store. I was eating dry chicken with dry lettuce rolled up, I called about the wrap and they told me they'd send me a NEW one. No. THEY LEFT CEASER DRESSING AT MY DOOR. THIS IS THE LAST TIME I order from this place. ITS SAD as I've been looking for a new daily wrap spot and really liked there wrap. The dressing looked like someone spit in it, ALL THIS AND THIS is not to even mention the soda BLOWING up on me after the first "chicken ceaser wrap" (with no dressing) got delivered or even a previous order that they also managed to mess up, DONT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE, all recent reviews seem like the same dang thing, I mean how hard is it to make a chicken ceaser wrap, they said something about how they were closing, so that means I had to sit there and wait for my new one, and they just threw a container of ceaser dressing on my porch rang the doorbell twice and I sh*t you not the driver pulled out of my complex so fast you would have thought it was Mario Andretti, no wonder my 20oz blew up when he first showed up. Petrone's has the best pitas, pizzas, and friendly service in town. I absolutely love their grilled chicken pitas, with extra honey mustard on the side, and often get their steak too garden salad. The only complaint I have is that when I ordered the salad recently the steak tip portion was considerably smaller than usual. Still my favorite but I was definitely disappointed. read more

It's nice to have a place you can rely on whenever you are in town. My wife and I lived in Melrose ten years ago and Petrone's provided many a meal. We still drop by when we are in town for their outstanding subs, reasonable prices, and friendly service. PROS You shouldn't have too many service expectations from a sub shop, but their service is noticeable here. You will also get friendly, caring service and a little conversation while you wait for your food. The subs are very good too, with very fresh ingredients. They are perfect to take with you on a hike or a road trip because they will stay fresh and still taste great several hours later. CONS One booth in the whole place. Dine out, not in. This place is mostly takeout. There's not much to say about it other than it offers an excellent buffalo chicken calzone. Everything else I've tried on their menu is below average. Their subs and pizza gets 2 stars at best (sorry). It tastes like any other sub or pizza place. Just stick with the buffalo chicken calzone (5 stars) and you're good to go. read more

This is definitely the best pizza in Melrose! The crust is moderately thick, airy, and amazingly delicious. Always the perfect ratios of pizza:cheese:toppings.
