Three words for you: Buffalo Chicken Calzone. Honestly, the pizza isn't great and the subs are the same as anywhere else, but ooooooh those calzones. They are all delicious but the grand poobah of them all is the buff chick. It used to be something only those in the know could order, but it's become so popular that they put it on the menu. The buffalo chicken is the perfect spice level and they pack a ton of it into each calzone. The crust is what really makes this though. I don't know how they make their dough, but the crust is absolutely delicious. Get the small though, the large is made differently and the crust isn't as good. And as Nancy B says, the Syrian bread is unbelievable; I think my wife only orders the salad every time to get the bread! The place is small - don't plan on going there to eat. I used to order from here all the time when I worked near by. The only thing I ever got was the buffalo chicken salad, which is by far one of the best take out salads I've ever had. the chicken is not breaded, which is great, but has the best buffalo sauce on it. the bread you get with the salads is so thick and delicious, it is like pita bread but different. thicker and addicting! read more

I don't really understand what people raved about. I have had much better buffalo chicken calzones in my lifetime. No matter what you get here its always fresh and very delicious. I like to eat a variety of foods and everything ive gotten here has always been top notch. Their pizza and calzones are always to die for no matter what the combination of topping or filling you get (especially if your a buffalo chicken fanatic) . My favorite thing to get here is the chicken teriyaki sub it is mouth watering and very filling as the portions they give in subs is what somebody like me is looking for, nice and filling. The staff is super friendly and everytime i go in with my daughter they always give her one of their home made cookies and as a parent thats something that is really appreciated to see them want to make her smile. Got a small cheese pizza. Good sauce, cheese and crust. Not so good service. They do make me wait . I was there yesterday and the girl said ten minutes took nearly half a hour sitting there waiting. Not the greatest service but the pizza is good. Owner is very nice, but apart from him seems overall the staff is kind of rude and dont care, which is sad because the the pizza is some of my favorite and I put up with it and stop here when I can, but it would be nice if they were a little more customer friendly. Everything I come here the service leaves me less and less enthused about returning. read more

I cannot say enough amazing things about Petrones. First things first, they are incredibly nice on the phone everytime I call. Second, delivery... lightning fast (30 minutes on the nose every time :)) Third, the food...oh the food. SO SO GOOD. Pizza is delicious - very light and airy dough, the sauce is super flavorful, and there is the perfect cheese/sauce ratio. Grilled veggie pocket - pretty much the greatest thign I've ever eaten in my life and HUGE. I've had both the Caesar and Greek salads - both were delicious and the dressings are some of the best I've ever had. This leads me to my favorite part - the PITA. I literally could live off of these. They are thick, dense and delicious. Also very good are the steak fries. Now, disclaimer, I'm a vegetarian, so I can't comment on any meat products, but I will say that the buffalo sauce is so delicious that I literally sop it up with my pita everytime the bf gets wings. Buffalo chicken calzone. By far the best thing that I have had here. The chicken has a great flavor and the crust is thin and tasty. I have tried their buffalo chicken appetizer, sub, and salad, and for some reason none of them taste nearly as good as when they are in the calzone. I have tried their subs and wraps and was not overly impressed--not bad, just nothing special--but their homemade pita is very good. If you are looking for a sandwich, I would highly recommend getting it on this. Pizza is decent, but I prefer a thinner crust. Nothing compares to the buffalo chicken calzone, though--try it, you will not be disappointed. read more

Ive had this pizza several times now but the first time I called, I ordered a pizza with broccoli on it. when I got the pizza there was about 5 peices of broccoli on the whole pizza- I called back and explained the situation, the manager offered to send out a new pizza for free, but I didnt want to wait (I was pregnant and hungry), so instead he gave me $10 credit on my account. Grew up on petrones...best food stop in Melrose for over a decade. Amazing italian subs, steak and cheese subs, buffalo chicken calzone, chicken parm calzone, buffalo chicken pizza, pizza in general, steak dinners, steak tip salads, french fries, you name it, they make it the best. I love the food at Petrone's. It's the only place I order delivery from, but that's bound to change. Food doesn't make the entire restaurant experience--customer service matters, too. I've had good experiences when I go in the restaurant, but time after time, I bite my tongue as the person taking my order over the phone gives me attitude about my order, or rushes me off the phone as I'm trying to inform him/her that I am paying with a card. I just ordered and the gentlemen blew his breath at me and said "come on, this is the reason you were on hold so long. Everyone pays with cards!" Newsflash, it's 2015 where most people pay for many things with a card, Apple Pay or Paypal. Although the food is good, the rudeness it not okay. I'm kind, don't give attitude and tip well. If the business can't be reflected with people with better attitudes, I don't want to support you anymore. Of course, I'm just one person...but it's all I feel like I can do, aside from rating you. Petrone's of Melrose, you deserve 5 stars for the food. Customer service is the reason you get a 3 instead. read more

This used to be my go to for pizza and salads but the past few orders were not good. The garden salad was very watery and it lacked flavour even with the dressing. The pizza was very thick and heavy - it sat like a cannon in my stomach all night. The customer service needs improvement too. read more

Not sure why this place is struggling to get exceptional reviews. Everybody who lives in Melrose knows Petrone's has the best buffalo chicken calzones on the face of the earth. That alone merits a high review, not to mention other great items on the menu such as the greek style pizza and salads. On top of this, the service is always great and Leo is a phenomenal character - always a pleasure to talk to. I grew up with Petrone's and have never had a bad experience over 12+ years.
