One of the best pet shops in the area. Their aquatics section is one of my favorite. Omar is an absolutely knowledgeable aquarist, and very personable. He loves to talk about animal care! It is a locally owned shop owed by pet care fans. What is not to like? Okay, one more tiny thing they could work on: their small pet care section could be more forward thinking in terms of modern hamster/mouse/etc pet care. It's not their specialty, and their hamsters always seem content so it's not a major thing but larger wheels, larger cages, etc I think would be a lot more informative to the future pet owner than Kaytee products. read more

Awful experience Review below I recently returned to this store after a fish I had purchased there a few months ago passed away, and unfortunately I had a very upsetting experience. I was the only customer in the store, store doors were wide open with the undeniable overwhelming smell of pot. Both employees repeatedly walked away from me while I was simply trying to buy a replacement fish. They kept trying to up-sell & I explained that I only needed the fish and was ready to pay, but I still felt ignored and treated with hostility. While I was on the phone speaking to my mother in another language, one employee made a comment along the lines of, "If you can speak another language, so can I," after speaking under her breath in a very harsh & angry language, to the 2nd employee. The entire interaction made me feel singled out, uncomfortable, and unwelcome. Whether intentional or not, the experience felt disrespectful and discriminatory. I ended up leaving without making a purchase and looked over my shoulder to see the 2nd employee glaring at me through the front door. I went to PetSmart instead, where I was treated kindly and professionally. I believe every customer deserves to be treated with basic courtesy and respect, regardless of religion, appearance, or the language they speak. read more

Upon walking into Pets Place II, I was horrified to find animals in inhumane and miserable conditions in this pet store. When the new owners took over, they turned half the store into their own personal zoo where they keep animals as pets. These animals are in cages too small, are not socialized and look stressed and unhappy. For example, any person who cares about the wellbeing of pets knows that rabbits should be kept in a minimum of a 4 foot by 4 foot pen. The standards have changed with research and rabbits need to run and play. There were multiple rabbits, including a very large one in those small rectangular cages. This pet store knows these cages aren't humane, because they don't even sell them. They sell a larger (although still not ideal) size. Rabbits are like dogs and need to be constantly stimulated and given attention. The large rabbit in the cage looked defeated and miserable. There were birds crammed into small cages, unable to move comfortably or fly. These cages would be bad for ONE bird, let alone two or three. Guinea pigs and rats without a house to hide in, forced to feel unsafe and have no where to retreat to. No toys or places to climb, doomed to live their lives in rectangular prisons. These cages are absolutely unacceptable and to not house these permanent "pets" in conditions which show love and care for the animals are not only selfish, but bad examples of appropriate pet care to customers who would trust a pet stores advice. If you cannot give an animal the proper space and setup it needs, STOP KEEPING THEM. You are jeopardizing their health, well-being and quality of life doing so. Just because you feel emotionally attached to an animal does not mean you can keep it in your store day and night without enrichment and interaction. It is criminal. Pets Place 2, I expect things to change. These practices cannot go on, and animal welfare authorities will be contacted if a change isn't made. Do better. Some of the most knowledgeable pet shop owners I have ever met! Omar helped me set up a aquascaped fish tank with plants and beneficial bacteria. He knew exactly what fish would do well together and tested our water numerous times before giving us the green light to bring home fish. We now have a beautiful healthy tank. Omar took the time to let my daughter hold his animals. You can tell than Omar and his partner care deeply for their pets. I never complain but today was my last straw, I saw some fish that I would like to purchase but low and behold someone had 25 of them on reserve, and I'm pretty sure it was a pet store employee which means they are taking preferential treatment over the customer. I asked if they could spare 2 out of the 25 and they said no which I thought was ridiculous. I asked them when they put the reserve sign and they said last week... there should be a 24 hour holding period, not treating other customers better than others. Excellent place! I go here all the time for the friendly and knowledgeable staff. They have a great variety of fish and small animals. I have gotten a bearded dragon and four tanks worth of fish and supplies from them. Omar is amazing and like a savant with aquariums. He even patiently tried to teach me how to run a planted tank but I messed it up - not his fault I didn't listen. Some of their prices are a bit higher compared to chain stores, but what you are paying for is the advice, understanding, tips and friendliness you don't get elsewhere - which is well worth it. I used to come here all the time for feeders for my frogs. I was told by Omar to sign up for their stupid useless card and that it would help me save on feeders, just to be told the following visit that the card doesn't work for feeders. Whatever that's not a big deal. The issue is the fact I was paying nearly 8 dollars for 6-10 feeder minnows/ goldfish there. That's absurd. The petsmart across the street has them for 20 cents a fish. I'd even put my money on it saying the owners go there to restock and up charge 3x the price. I bought a Pac-Man frog here for 55 dollars. A simple albino that can be bought at a expo for about 20. If I wasn't impatient I would've waited LOL. I saved a Pac-Man frog from the clearance of a petco for 10 dollars that was in much better shape than the Pac-Man frog I got from them. Omar also told me over the phone there's "no correct way to handle a tarantula". Very little knowledge on inverts, don't go there for them or any help with them. Their red knee or fire leg, I forgot which of the two they have in stock are also going for 180 which is insane. They can be found for 60-80 online or at petsmart across. Spiders are acceptable to save from those stores. Don't fall for their 10 gallon tank deal lol. They'll try to sell you a 10 gallon any chance they can. (I fell for it, and they still tried to sell me them when Id go in) I'd say only come here if you need cork, substrate or a tank. But even that there's buyer beware as the zoo med tanks are up charged there. There's many other fish and reptile stores near by that have better prices and more exotic fish/ animals. This Fish store has so many beautiful fish and every possible accessory that is out there to make your fish tank gorgeous. We went here to see if they had any new fish we can add to our tank and they had so many it was hard to choose. We needed some coral to add to the tank as well and they have so much to choose from, walls and walls of coral in every size, shape and color you want. The staff was extremely helpful and eager to assist us and directed us to what we were looking for. We will go back to this store for sure since building a tank is so addicting.. you just cant stop adding to it and places like this draw you back in to get more. read more

BEAUTIFUL Pet Store! It's amazing how much they were able to put in such a small store. They have everything--birds, reptiles, hamsters/small rodents and FISH! Zero stars and absolutely never coming back here again! Came in to buy a new fish for my 10 gallon tank (already have one fish at home). Ended up buying a decently expensive fish and had it acclimated to the water prior to placing into the tank. Not even two hours later and the fish was dead. Tank was clean, water was tested, and the fish I already owned got along great with the new fish. The next morning, my fish that I had for over 6 months was now also dead. Immediately called the store and they stated they would refund/ replace the fish, however, I needed to bring a water sample. Went over with a water sample, to which they stated the water was perfect. They stated they weren't sure what happened with the fish nor why my fish of 6 months also died... once he realized I wanted a refund, he then stated he needed to check the water again to which it came back with multiple problems...... he just said it was perfect and now it had problems? Wouldn't give me a refund. Went to petsmart down the road to have the water checked and surprise surprise, the water had no problems. What a scam this place is. I went to this place to buy my niece a bunny for her birthday. On Thursday I paid for the bunny in full and told them I will get it Saturday. On Saturday the bunny I bought had been resold or died. The bunny was a specialty lop eared bunny. The manager insisted it didn't die but he couldn't tell me where it went. After fifteen minutes of arguing with the manager his clerk yells at my children because one of them tapped a fish tank. As I proceeded to tell her not to talk to my children the manager took out a rabbit that looked like it was found in a park and says that he will replace my specialty bunny with this mutant of nature. At that point I just asked for my money back which was kindly accommodated. My favorite part was when the manager said the bunny cage was mislabeled and it clearly says "hold for Blanch." This pet store is inept and incompetent. They couldn't hold bunny for 48 hours without screwing it up. I personally think the bunny died because the manager could not tell me where it was. Went in to browse and potentially pick up some supplies for a new aquarium setup (water conditioner, decor, thermometer, etc.) but be warned: If the employee working there thinks you look "suspicious", he will follow you around the store with his arms folded and just stand there staring at you while you are trying to shop. The prices are not very competitive, and someone trying to hover over you while you browse is uncomfortable and quite offensive, to say the least. When I realized what was going on, I promptly left and spent my money at two other pet stores in the immediate vicinity. With so much competition and choice literally down Rt 59 between locally owned businesses and big box retailers, there is no point of patronizing a business where I don't feel welcome. read more

This is a very cute pet store. I bought my hamster here 3 years ago (still alive) and came here frequently to pick up food for it along with bedding. The staff was always very nice to me and always helped me when I needed it. They also knew a lot about all the animals and items they were selling in the store. The only reason why I have not been there lately is because I do not go to school in this area anymore. My friends and I always found joy coming here. The staff always let us play with the ferrets and other creatures in the store. The have a HUGE selection of all different species of fish. Each and everyone of the animals here, including the fish, were all lively. All the cages and fish tanks I noticed were always clean. Small and cute petstore, I come here mostly for the fish section but they also have reptiles and small animals. I bought two of my bettas here and they're not just your average plain colored ones! Pricing was fair for them considering how they looked they cost me from 13- 20. They also sell different kinds ! Ive had imported bettas that cost me around 30 plus shipping so this was definitely worth it from my experience. The store is a decently sized store with a nice selection of freshwater fish, saltwater fish, and coral. All of the fish I have got from them are doing well except one fish which died on me. They also have a good selection of fish food (including frozen) and fish tanks. Their reptile section is decent with a few snakes and lizards. They also carry some small animals and supplies. It is a quaint shop with good selection and is well staffed. My only complaint is that their prices are a little high. They also have a card for members which gets you a discount for 5% I believe. read more

I used to come here as a babe and they had the most awesome animals. they've obviously downsized and I was sad they had barely a snake collection so I had to go elsewhere. overall, all the animals I've bought here- chinchillas, rabbits, canaries, etc; were always very healthy and stayed with me past their life expectancy. Probably the place with the most exotic fish in rockland. You can't get half the stuff they have here at pet co. sometimes i will just go there to look around, and they have some nice fish. huge stingrays , giant fish , etc. only complaint, some of the animals don't have too large of a cage/tank. eg. the betta cups , though i guess that's pretty standard now. i guess this is justified by the fact it's a temporary home, but they do give you very good advice when purchasing an animal, such as tank size or what they need to thrive . read more

i got my bunny there 4 months ago and yesterday she passed away. mind you she's only about 8-9 months old. they couldn't even really tell me much about her. when i got her, there was a bunny beside her who was clearly in distress, neglected and dying. i was going to get that bunny to try and save it but there was obviously no hope. i saw my baby girl hopping around and healthy looking so i took her home with me. my girl was healthy and then all of a sudden out of nowhere got an infection in her bloodstream. i took very good care of my bunny, i loved and love my bunny very much and now all i am is left heartbroken. i do not recommend getting your bunnies here. read more

Rob has always been a huge help for me when discussing setups and system options as well as appropriate livestock for my tank. I have no problem supporting this local business and will continue to be a happy customer. I have always dealt with a Mom & Pop store for my fish tank needs. I dealt with another store for years in Nanuet but Fred closed up. I had to deal with Petco, Pet Smart & Pet Goods. I'm not saying anything about these stores, they met my needs..... I had gone 1 time into Pets Place II & found exactly what I was looking for right away. I recently re arranged my fish tank & really DID NOT want to deal with those above stores. I made a trip to Pets Place II & have been dealing with them now for a couple of months. Their stock of freshwater and Saltwater fish are so well taken care of. It's nice to be remembered (maybe not by name yet) but Omar remembers my tank because of the blue Parrot I have. I've dealt with him, Sam & Rob the owner. There is no issue or problem they can't help you with & if they can't answer it, they will get the answer for you. Went in to buy a heat fixture for my turtle tank with my wife. The one they had in stock was $30 over the price of a popular online store. I was approached by who I believe was the manager asking if he could help. I'm not very comfortable asking for discounts but I did ask if I could possibly receive a discount and was immediately laughed at when I mentioned that a competitor was selling the same item for a significantly lower price. I even showed him my phone as proof. I was then reprimanded and told that as a smaller store, he had to keep the price as is. By this point I wanted to leave but was embarrassed by how poorly he treated us that I just stood there a bit frozen. Not a minute later and he approaches us again and once again, I say to him I'd like to buy it but the asking price is just a bit too high. He rudely responds by asking if I have children and that "if you did, you wouldn't ask and just buy it." I was completely floored by how inappropriate this store representative treated us. I told friends and family of the interaction and not to shop at this place again. Went to buy a cockatiel. Honestly, great pets, but horrible conditions. Cockatiel was crammed in a small cage, nowhere near big enough to keep it somewhat happy. However, it's a sweet bird and already hand tamed. When I took it home, i discovered on its wings that it already plucked some of its feathers, with a small bald patch on the side. The employees said that it was because it was a 7 week old bird, but the feathers were 100% plucked. Manager was also extremely rude over the phone.
