The fish are all really sick here. I've been in here probably a dozen times over the last year and each time I've noticed the fish department is pretty appalling. What a beautiful, modern, and well-organized store! We just moved from the "Tacoma side" over to the "Gig Harbor side" (Port Orchard actually) and have been traveling back to the Tacoma Petsmart location for grooming of our Shih-Tzu and for other doggie needs. This new location, right by the newly-opened Fred Meyer Marketplace in Gig Harbor is way more modern than the one we're used to, with a really nice organization and layout. Great job merchandising this new store. Great addition to the overall Gig Harbor services scene - yes it's a "chain store" and all that. I get that. Something I witnessed and I wrote the store too. Good Morning, I was at Petsmart in Gig Harbor yesterday and observed something unfortunate. An older gentleman with a white beard, maybe in his early 60's came in the store without wearing a mask and was trying to exchange some dog food. I was standing right behind him and the cashier. The cashier (Joni was her name) handled herself professionally and was a darling and asked the man to put on a mask. The man explained he had health issues and said he was medically exempt, and wearing a mask causes his blood pressure to rise. I think he said something with cardio in the sentence. Joni could have checked him out in 30 seconds but called the manager over. I stepped out of line because I knew that this might escalate. The manager did everything wrong. I worked in the corporate world for 25 years, and my focus was customer service. I've been in this country for 27 years, and I thought I've seen everything. The manager and the customer debated a bit, and at one point, the customer said to call the Police. The manager asked the man to come to a different register. The man once again explained his health issues, and it appeared that he was hard of hearing. The manager told the gentleman that he would first have his employees check out all the compliant customers. There were about 10 customers, and this course of action was very unprofessional. If this man was in jeopardy of exposing everyone to some health concern, why did the manager not check him out quickly? Was the manager trying to make some point that escalated an already intense situation? He put our lives in jeopardy. He made the man waiting there for what seemed to be a lifetime while 10 other customers checked out. The man could have been checked out in 30 secs!! The man was obviously agitated, and the unprofessional manager did nothing to protect us from this man. There are ways to alleviate or mitigate a strained situation, and the manager did none of these things. You need to have a sign-up that says medical exemptions are not accepted here. I know that Safeway and Fred Meyer do not enforce the mask mandate and allow for medical exemptions. Our Governor allows for medical exemptions. Is this a store policy, then why didn't the manager explain this to the man? The manager did everything he could to agitate this man, which could have gone terribly wrong for all of us. On the plus side, the man said something nice to Joni, and she responded very kindly. I could not hear all the words. read more

My mini Australian labradoodle has been groomed here over the past year and this time was the last. He had a long coat this time and a some matting around his neck. (My daughter bathed him in between and left his coat wet) the groomer said they may have trouble with it. I left, they called me within 30 min to say come pick him up. We can't get the matting out. When I got there, he had partially shaved fur hanging off of his neck! I took him to a DIY groom and wash immediately and it was off no problem. It seriously took 2 min to get the matting off. Super minor stuff that I would expect a groomer to be able to to. Needless to say, I will be taking my guy somewhere else moving forward. read more

We have been going to Petsmart grooming for a few years for our doodle. We have minor issues of them canceling last minute or needing to reschedule. Yesterday I took our doodle in for a cut, whose appointment had been rescheduled twice due to weather. They did their assessment on her and said they couldn't cut her because they would need to go lower then a 10 blade on her. I left the building disappointed but took their opinion because they are the experts right?!?! I called around frantically trying to find a place that wasn't booked out over a month. We explained our story to a salon and they said they would get her in today. They were willing to work late to help get her cleaned up. After I picked her up from the salon they said the lowest they had to go was a 7, and were upset Petsmart sent us away without even trying. Petsmart has now lost our business of two pets. read more

I have used the same Mobil pet groomer for 6 years. Unfortunately she lost her business during the lockdown. I had a 8 am grooming for my 100 lb, no proper bath in 8 months, shepherd/ malamute. They have so many layers of fur that even brushing her daily wasn't working. I was so impressed with Petsmart grooming. They were so nice and my dog came out so happy. Usually she's hates it but she was a very happy puppy. Thank you ladies for a wonderful experience. My dog looks beautiful. Her cut is perfect and a happy dog with no trauma is what I needed during these times. I 100% recommend. It's nap time for her but she's smiling. read more

This location like most others is very well stocked with the brands that I love for my little Bichon Frise, but as always it gets very challenging when it comes to getting treats for him because hes got such a small mouth, and l do not want him to choke over a hard or firm treat --- so i asked a sales gal to recommend a soft treat and i was led to an $18 ! packet of presumably chewy stuff that I was told would work ... it was a hard sell given that his little meals are $2-$4 a can, but I splurged ... then when I took it home it was like solid, brittle stuff -- very hard to cut, very hard to chew, and he kind of gagged on it so I quickly took it out of his mouth .... next weekend when I tried to return it , the manager gal told me that the $18 package of treats is not returnable, even though they incorrectly recommended that treat for small dogs. We usually go here to get our two dogs groomed. Our appointment was rescheduled by PetSmart since they were closed on the date of our appointment due to the snow. When U got there there were 5 dogs in the lobby with a line wrapping around the store. Apparently they thought the best thing to do to was to reschedule all the appointments they cancelled on the same day. My dogs don't do well with unknown dogs so I asked if I could wait in the car and either call in or have them call me when they're ready. The worker said that I can wait in the car but they will not call me and if I call in they will not answer the phone. Bad customer service. Bad management. read more

Steer clear of the grooming salon. I had an appointment here for an express groom of my small dog. I usually went to another Pet Smart for the last 2 years but my groomer quit so I tried this location. Stupid move on my part. The groomer my dog got at Gig Harbor was the salon manager. My dog is a senior and has weak back legs. I explained everything to the groomer and I said I will be in my car if you need me. 20 minutes later, she calls and said come in to get your dog as she tried to bite the groomer. My dog has not tried to bite a groomer in over 10 years and that was when she was a puppy. She groomed half my dog. I think she just did not want to groom my dog and my dog could tell. Who knows? I'll never go back to this location and I recommend others do the same! read more

We've been coming to this location for 12+ months since moving to this area. We get our dog groomed every 3 weeks and purchase cat food and all supplies. I purchased a box of cat litter Labor Day weekend and the litter left chalk streaks all over my wood floors. I returned the remaining box to Alex (female) and she stated a used box could not be returned. I asked how was I supposed to know that it was terrible litter if I hadn't tried it??? I've used the same brand for years but this was the new absorbing litter. Alex then barked at me to stand outside the blue tape on the floor and told my husband who was standing with a double size box of litter for the exchange to put his mask over his nose which had slipped down. Wow, one employee just lost this location a lot of purchases from one household. We immediately went to Petco where the dog grooming is less and the service is great! Only regret, we didn't go to Petco sooner. Family members are relocating this month with pets. They will become Petco shoppers as well. read more

If you think the new PetSmart is going to be a nice addition I'm Gig Harbor that takes care of their animals, you're wrong. I went into the new PetSmart thinking that it would be a nice store that cares for their animals. Especially their fish. I was so disappointed. When I walked in I was greeted to happy smiling workers. So, I assumed that the store would be as nice as the workers. Nope. I walk over to the fish department and I start looking at the large selection of fish they have. EVERY SINGLE CONTAINER HAD SOME SORT OF DISEASE IN IT. I was so disgusted. I notified some of the workers about their fish and they just said they knew. If they knew about it then why were they selling really sick fish in their store?! I had to walk out of the store right away after that. The new PetSmart is just a store that is trying to make a profit. They don't care whether their fish are almost dead or very sick. Very unorganized. I purchased a care package that I was charged a couple hundred. Every time I asked about using it towards my pets grooming they didn't know what it was I was referring to. Had to ask me what exact packages I purchased and still had to pay out of pocket. My last and final visit they gave me attitude for wearing my mask under nose while I couldn't breath bc I was pregnant. From that point i knew they weren't going to be kind to my animal. They called me shortly after saying that they couldn't complete her grooming session bc my dog wasn't cooperating and snapped at the groomer which she's an older dog has always been professionally groomed and never ever had any sort of complaint before ever. And during that snotty phone call she wanted to discuss that my out of pocket wouldn't be covered by my package even tho they did only a wash and blow. When I asked her why if they didn't even cut her she then responded that they were able to do a sanitary cut? Yet she wouldn't stay still apparently, the hardest place to cut her? When I picked her up I clearly could tell they didn't cut anything of her and the lady wouldn't come back to speak to me. The young man working there was at least nice and took off any expenses with my left over package after 15 mins researching what packages I had on my account. Never going back. Rude service. The Gig Harbor Pet Smart groomed our Doodle today. It was his first "hair cut" and they did a great job. He has never looked this good.

Both Melissa and also Erica are fantastic along with Michael one of the managers there Erica has been extraordinary helping me with purchasing fish. She loves the pets and it shows! She cares about the fish for sure there and is always looking to help the fish and help the customer both! Erica is the reason I bought the Electric Blue acara and 5 more Angelfish. Never had a problem with them until today, after scheduling an appointment weeks in advance I walked in to take my dog to be groomed and they said they were over booked and would be a 2 hour wait... The knowledge that I will have to choose between canceling my appointment or have them stick my dog in a cage waiting hours for an appointment made weeks prior is unsettling. My dog is more than a dog. He is family and because of my schedule for the day I had to leave him there! He is absolutely terrified of being held by strangers and now he must wait there when there should be a limit to how many dogs can be scheduled at once or add more employees to help with the load. I'm sad for my dog and will find another groomer or just do it myself to escape the chance that my dog will be left unattended for hours away from his owners. read more

However, I like to use coupons when I can, and after being hassled anytime it happened to be one of the managers (I think Joe, but don't make me swear to the name) cashiering I now drive PAST this one and cross the bridge to go to the others. (He apparently hates people using coupons, and while he had no choice but to accept them -- it's not as if there was anything questionable about them -- he grumbled and acted as if I were pulling something shady. Every time I come into this store, there's a problem. From dead betta fish all over the display, to poor service. Today I went in to return a betta tank that was in great condition, clean and scrubbed. It had everything including the plastic bags. I had my receit and it was in the 60 days Mark. My fish just kept freaking out in it and I had got a different tank for it. They refused my return because I didn't have the USED FILTER CARTRIDGE. I threw that away. My friend has had to exchange several different tanks before and never was denied over a FILTER CARTRIDGE. On top of that the "assistant manager" lady was very rude and instead of handling my issue, past me off to someone else who had even less authority. He just told me that If she said no then it must be no. Even though, I had the reciet, and everything it came with just not the dirty filter. Don't shop here, just go to Pet Co. They are actually nice and know how to treat their customers. read more

The worst experience EVER! Took our dog in for a grooming appointment. He was in need of a bath and cut. When I left, my dog was happy and giving doggie kisses to one of the groomers. About 30 minutes later, I get a message from one of the groomers telling me to come pick up my wet dog because they were unable to give him a full cut. She said that he acted like he wanted to bite her when she tried to use the blow dryer. My dog has NEVER growled or tried to bite anyone. When he meets strangers he gives kisses and rolls on his back for a belly rub. She also told me to bring towels because they had none in the store to dry off the dog. So, I picked up my WET dog and he looked a complete mess. The same groomer who said that my dog tried to bite her offered to continue the service a few days later...if he was so much of a threat why was she offering to finish the job a few days later? My dog looked like a raggedy billy goat. One of the other groomers tried to finish the cut around his face and had no problems. He even gave her doggie kisses. The manager immediately took the side of the employee and said that sometimes dogs get stressed out - which does not apply to my dog who is familiar with going to the groomers. Then they had the audacity to charge me 1/2 the price of the service. Next time - I will go back to my normal groomer in Tacoma. This was a total inconvenience and poor customer service. NEVER AGAIN PETSMART - GIG HARBOR! I wish I would have read the reviews 1st. This was the WORST experience ever! Please beware! read more

I cannot recommend taking a training class from Petsmart. The one I went to allowed a 3 year old dog in a puppy class... which may not be a problem for the dogs but if you signed up for a puppy class, you don't want your partially vaccinated unspayed puppy socializing with mature dogs whose owners don't have a current vaccination record with them. The trainer and the store should require verification of their own prerequisites before letting strange pets socialize and interact, not after. Puppy classes are all about controlled, safe socialization. This class was for puppies as young as 10 weeks. It's not a training class. It's a socialization class. And for the health and safety of the puppies, PetSmart should not develop structured classes with specific age and vaccination requirements and then not enforce them. The store gave me an immediate refund and I spoke with the store manager. The trainer called me later but I don't know why. She was making excuses which were flat out lies and I can tell these were the same lies she told her boss when confronted. So to be safe, take your pup to their socialization or any other class at your own risk. read more
