The best behaved boy, thanks Zee!

Kirby has been attending classes at PetSmart in Lakewood with Zee and recently graduated from the Advanced class (we took the Intermediate one with Zee as well). I can't type enough praise I have for her. She's such a talented pet trainer and is really in tune with every animal's body language and cues and will teach you to be just as in tune with your pet. She splits her time between every pet in the class perfectly, spending time on those who need extra help and giving extra work to those who's pets have got it down and can handle the extra challenge. We've been able to build on what we've learned in class at home and Kirby can now even turn off light switches and close doors on command! My only regret is not moving to Washington sooner so he could've had class with Zee for his puppy/beginner course. We just took in another dog (Sal) and immediately signed him up for Zee's next available beginner class to work on some behavioral concerns. Although we are in a group class, Zee had personalized homework for us to work on for his specific needs. Just from the first class, we've seen such an improvement in his confidence and obedience at home. The value of these group classes (I think $140 for 6 weeks of 1 hour classes) is unbeatable with such a great trainer.

    - I took my dog to get groomed and got horrible service. The next day I received a message from a PetSmart employee wanting me to remove photos. Telling me there would be legal action taken against me. Her threats don't scare me, I've done nothing wrong but I thought she wasn't worth my time so I just deleted them that evening. Now today I just received a nastier message again, but she was cursing this time in her message. It the same person calling herself Friendly N. From Steilacoom. I'm not sure if it's Courtney whom worked on my dog or a different PetSmart employee from their grooming department, that is messaging me but this just shows me how unprofessional they are. I still would not ever consider taking my dog here nor would I ever recommend their dog grooming services. They gave horrible grooming services and now I'm seeing how disgusting and disrespectful their employees are.

We love her to pieces, but our sole focus was trying to manage her environment. Some of our "management" techniques included: cardboard blocking the slider so she wouldn't see and yell at the neighbors, or the squirrels; a heavy rope martingale harness to walk her to the car; blacked out the back windows of our car so she couldn't see out and yell at every pedestrian (and scratch at the windows); we could not walk her; she had to be completely sedated to be seen by a vet; we could only board her at a kennel an hour and a half away; she could not be introduced to visitors. Our goal was to keep everyone safe, but when we ended up at the E-vet with our Corgi (Lexi) we realized we were not up to the task and looked for help. Every interaction with Amani K9 has been professional, empathetic, direct and effective. From our first contact we felt supported and understood. We didn't know what to expect, but they were clear about what services they could provide and how to proceed. Our evaluation with Marianna and Synclair was so informative, it's clear they know and love what they do and want to help. We left that meeting feeling more hopeful about Nyx than we had been in years. We enrolled in the 8 week board and train, and not everyone in our household was completely on board. (8 weeks is too long, why can't we visit, when can we see her, when can we love on her) We were in it for the long haul though, and Marianna even volunteered to be the bad guy, because we were NOT managing Nyx, we were just delaying a potential catastrophe. The next lapse might be worse than just an E-vet visit and some stitches. Those 8 weeks flew by, and while we had 6 "sessions" to teach us how to communicate effectively with Nyx, it's a steep learning curve. Imagine learning a new language while also learning to tango and having to match words with movement AND remain grounded and neutral. It's a real strain on the brain, and we had some baggage we were carrying around. (How am I supposed to keep #105 (now) of determined muscle from going wherever she wants to go with this teeny tiny ribbon of a leash?) Marianna and Synclair are ultimate "hype girls" though, able to give constructive feedback while still pointing out all the right things that you're doing. At the end of those 8 weeks, Marianna brought Nyx home, walked me through all the important new processes we were going to incorporate, and then said the most helpful thing ever: "I'm not just walking out the door and you'll never see or hear from me again, I'm just an email away." After Nyxy's first day home, our local sceptic realized how relaxed and calm Nyx was, sleeping on her cot. It was inconceivable to him, based on the Nyx of before times, that she could be anything but miserable if she was held hostage in her "place". After Nyxy's second day, he asked when we would be getting a "place" cot for Lexi. It's work, it's constant and forever work, but the Nyx we have now is so much calmer and at peace than we ever could have imagined. In our attempt to "manage" Nyxy's environment, we had shrunk her world so much, it's a joy and relief to be able to expand Nyx's world for a change. Amani K9 changed our lives, and we will be forever grateful.

We enrolled our 15-month-old Dogo Argentino in their 8-week training program after adopting him from the Humane Society. He had been struggling with anxiety, recall, tantrums, and self-regulation. After just four weeks, during our parent training session, we noticed a remarkable difference in his temperament. He was able to manage his anxiety around other dogs and outside distractions, follow commands consistently, and walk calmly on a leash beside us--no more pulling or wandering aimlessly. This program has completely transformed our relationship with our pup. He now trusts us more deeply because not only did he learn how to regulate himself, but we also learned how to help him do so. He stays in place on his mat without following us around or begging for food--it's like having a completely different dog! We're so glad we chose Amani K-9. We feel more confident and connected in our relationship with our dog because we better understand him, and he knows exactly what we expect of him.

After our local training place closed we were looking for other options and committed to positive reinforcement training. Julia did a 2 week board & train with our dog while we were traveling, mainly focusing on leash skills and practicing calm behavior around exciting things. We noticed an immediate improvement, but have also been continuing to work on the training at home after our follow up. I'm happy to report that we are continuing to see improvement using Julia's methods.

I have a small rescue dog whose issue was twofold. She needed socialization, especially when it comes to visitors at the door and barking (which can only come in time) and she developed a habit of being very vocal and aggressive towards other dogs on our walks. Anne's solution was to reward her with treats when she is being quiet and to have my dog and I retreat behind a door when she's barking, only to start again. This is not a good solution for the real world, because when my dog is focused on another dog, she is 100 percent not interested in the treats and I cannot retreat behind an object or something while walking in my neighborhood. I recently watched an episode of Dog Whisperer, and he had much different techniques. I also have just started scooping her up and pushing her nose down continuously until she stops yelping. This has really helped. I'm not hurting her, but she does not like it, so if Cesar's technique doesn't work, I will continue with that. I have arthritis in my hands, and during my third of fourth sessions, it was made much worse because of my dog pulling on her leash for an hour. When Anne texted me that I was late for my fourth session, I messaged her back, saying I couldn't handle another hour of my hand in pain and that I wasn't able to reach her so that's why I hadn't called to cancel. I told her that her technique was not working AT ALL, I felt it was a waste of my time, and I was going to try other options. It was at this point that I expected a refund, at least a partial refund, because that was $385 out the window. Silence. So this is why I am writing a Yelp review.
