Ordered some takeout for dumpling week. Since we ended up ordering these dumplings to go, we ate them at the outdoor seats. Then we headed over to the Chinese restaurant at the far side of the parking lot. I'll be honest, just on appearances alone, I wish we had just stayed and had a meal here. It looks like a cool place you want to meet a friend to catch up, have a bite to eat and a couple of drinks. Hands down my new favorite Thai spot in PDX. The space itself is beautiful and cozy, and the staff is very kind and happy to help with menu recommendations. Over the course of a few visits, we've tried the pad thai, drunken noodles, orange chicken, veggie lover stir fry, and the pork dumplings-- all of which are out of this world. This place is consistently so good. The employees are super nice too. The ambiance is super cute! Now the food...I usually get the potato curry or the garlic & pepper w/soy curls (medium spice). Both options are delicious! The soy curls are just the perfect vegetarian option (I eat meat but love the soy curls). I get the chicken with the potato curry. It is mild and perfect for a rainy Portland day. Now their cocktails...tamarind whiskey sour is so flavorful (and strong). The lychee martini is so smooth and fresh. City Thai in Hillsdale is truly one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Portland. The atmosphere is cute, cozy, and welcoming, and the food has a more authentic Thai taste compared to many other places in the city that tend to make dishes too sweet. My go-to favorites are pork dumplings, and the Thai-style shrimp paella rice--all cooked to perfection and full of flavor. Our go-to neighborhood Thai joint where we usually order takeout. We've been coming here for years but they've tightened up their game recently, revamped the menu and spiffed up the interior a bit, and the dishes and flavors are more consistent these days. We usually get one of the stir fry's, and my recent Pad Prik King order was especially tasty, with just the right amount of heat and garlic and plenty of meat. Pro tip: this is pretty universal but if you order takeout the portions are usually smaller than what you'd get if you dined there. And you should dine there: it's a pleasant, cozy atmosphere inside considering there's a strip mall outside, they have beer, wine and even some mixed drinks, and the servers are all super nice and patient. Chicken yakisoba was good with 4/6 spice level which was perfect amount for it to actually be spicy but not in tears. Crab rangoons and thai tea were also delicious! We also got orange chicken and yellow curry, and the ruce that came with it was multigrain rice instead of white which we didnt think we ordered. Overall, all of the dishes were tasty, nothing stood out specifically but we would come back if it was convenient and it would be good classic thai! read more

Found this place on my gluten free app. I ordered Thai basil fried rice with tofu online. When I came to pick up the lady was less than welcoming, asked for my name and then handed me my bag and turned around and walked off. No thanks for patronizing the restaurant. I was hoping the food would make up for the lackluster service but it was even worse. It tasted like really spicy tomato paste with big flavorless chunks of tofu. How do you make spicy Thai basil fried rice taste bad? Who knows but I won't be back. On a positive note I did not have a reaction to gluten, so was thankful for that. read more

I can't believe that I've never reviewed City Thai. This is my favorite Thai restaurant. Before pandemic, we dined in frequently. The end of meal tapioca was always a treat (I don't think they do that anymore). During pandemic, they were our go to take out place. Now we do a mix of both. Just had lunch in the other day and it was lovely to be back. The restaurant is open and airy with a big mural of Bangkok on the wall. Lots of take out orders picked up while we were there but pretty quiet inside. The food is really the best. My spouse adores Tom yum soup and has tried it at many restaurants. This one was the most flavorful he has found around Portland. I often stick with my favorite red curry - it's always a win. But my spouse has tried many different dishes and always lets me have a taste and I've always enjoyed. This week, we had khao soi which was a surprise treat! Duchess status, here I come! read more

I don't understand how this restaurant only has a 3.6 rating. It is one of the best Thai restaurants in the metro. We used to frequent Rama Thai but their food went downhill after being sold to new owners so we needed a new restaurant. After trying a few different ones we almost gave up until we ate here. I visited this place because they partnered with a local non-profit. It is amazing that even during these tough times for restaurants this location agreed to split their revenues with a non-profit to give back to the community. This location is only doing pick-up and delivery. Nobody can wait inside so most wait in their car or stand outside. I ordered the Capitol Appetizer Sampler and Chicken Spicy Noodle. The Capitol Appetizer Sampler is a pretty big size and well worth the price. I wish I got more sweet sauce. The Chicken Spicy Noodle was also good. Tonight I ordered a bit simple- "combo fried rice" - Simply delicious & with 4 proteins (shrimp, beef, pork & chicken) & "Red Curry with Pork Belly - so decadent. Very mixed opinions on City Thai. It's been years since I've been here - the last time I visited, I recall old blinds in the windows with tons of flies and mediocre food. But I recently walked by and noticed a refreshed interior, and see on yelp that it's under new management so I decided to give it another go. Indeed, the inside looks great with modern decor. As per usual, I got my standard pad thai with tofu...and it was excellent. My wife had the wonton soup with medium spice, but it was so spicy that she could barely eat it (and she can tolerate a good amount of spice). She took the blame for ordering it spicy and the waitress recommended she order it more mild next time... I also checked in on yelp and was pleased to see a 10% off deal, but the business wouldn't honor it (nor did they proactively offer up any kind of perk in place of it). So while I enjoyed my dish and the new atmosphere, the rest of the experience was subpar. read more

Since we've been eating here they have continued to improve. There is now a full service bar. They have a new menu format and new tableware.
