The place had a healthy crowd for that time of day, which is always a good sign. The layout is a casual mishmash of outdoor patios, indoor bars, and a mix of tables and high-tops. Located right across from the Kessler Theater, they clearly attract a steady stream of pre- and post-show guests. The overall vibe is a relaxed sports bar with a welcoming neighborhood feel. I went with the classic cheeseburger and swapped fries for onion strings. The burger was delicious, and the onion strings were a great choice, crispy, flavorful, and not overly greasy. I wrote my review after my first visit here. I have become a regular at phd coming every weds for the last 2 mos for trivia and im loving it. I have tried a bunch of things on the menu. My favorite is probably the sliders, although i wish they came with a side of fries. (Problem solved by ordering a side of fries.) ive also had the lgbtq sandwich- super tasty, loaded waffle fries- yum, individual nachos- yum, onion rings- yum, chicken acapulco in wrap form- pretty tasty, chicken blt- bland, and club- yummy. Pretty much everything is a win. On top of the food, ive realized that the bar feels kind of like home to me. Im not a drinker and dont frequent bars, but heres why. The gm is a sweetheart. He has the sweetest relationship with his staff and you can tell from the way they interact how close they all are. I love going in and recognizing the staff and getting hugs from them. What else is cool- they pack up meals for the homeless twice a month. I think it's connected with the owners church but still using the space for that is awesome. I have come a couple times and plan to keep coming back. Charles always asks me if i want a ginger ale bc he knows thats all I drink. I also love that a couple of my trivia friends have a special beer they like, charles tries to keep it on hand for them. He also knows thats i like to watch the wnba games and is starting to check for them before i get there for trivia on weds nights. All these things make me want to keep coming back. read more

We love PhD! It is our go to for Happy Hour and not a bad place to watch a game. The patio is dog friendly and they have several tv's playing the games! The service is always good and the drinks are always strong. The owner or manager (not sure what he is) is great. He is very friendly and always speaks. read more

I've been to PhD numerous times and have had a great experience, however today my experience was horrible. Not sure if it's under new management or if there are just new employees. My husband and I sat and waited for a good 15 minutes and the waiters were just chit chatting with their regulars they never acknowledged us. Which I get it we are at a bar but we sat in the "restaurant" portion so that we could be waited on. We ended up leaving because no one acknowledged us so we went next door to Cannons Corner and we were immediately greeted and served. read more

The parking lot is small but there is street parking nearby. Ambiance - Its like a sports bar but not as packed. They have inside seating and a covered patio. I've been here multiple times in the past and it's always good! The burgers are really good and the appetizers are good. Went this past weekend and we got amazing service from Mariah. I was staying in Dallas for the past semester and lived about a 5-minute drive from this place, and I think it's safe to say I became a bit of a regular at this spot! I loved going here, the staff made me feel super welcome whenever I came, and they were very accommodating if I had a question or complaint about my order. The loaded waffle fries are a top-tier appetizer to share with the table, and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to find as good of a brunch deal as PhD has- $3 mimosas will have me coming back every single time. I loved sitting outside on the patio enjoying the weather and people-watching on the sidewalks. You might have to wait a moment when you first sit down or get somebody's attention, but I've always been helped within a couple of minutes of sitting down. They also have trivia on Wednesday nights which was a fun time! Granted, I did not have a widespread knowledge of the topics that were discussed, but I love any excuse to go out and enjoy a nice drink with good people. I was in burger heaven here! I ordered the 7th street burger which is pretty much a jalapeño popper in burger form and it was so good! The onion rings were awesome and the loaded cheese fries were delicious!! I also ordered the Sandia Spritz and the West Kessler Tea and both drinks were fantastic. Our server was helpful and attentive and all around great! The patio was shaded and spacious! No complaints here I will definitely be back. Service is horrible!! I really want to like this place. It used to be great but now the last 3 times I've gone in there, it has taken over 20 minutes to even be acknowledged much less served anything. Doesn't matter if you're at a table or at the bar. I went there yesterday (Sunday 3/3/24) to give it another chance. The bartender was really rude and dismissive. I ordered a drink when she finally looked over at me and then watched her serve a bunch of other people without ever getting my drink. It's like she either immediately forgot about my order or just didn't want me to spend money there for some reason. There are several places close to there that have better food and much better service. Apparently they didn't need my business so from now on, they definitely won't be getting it. read more

I have been here about 5-6 times, and the the food is really good with a very friendly staff. It's a great place where the prices "seem" low on the menu with daily specials and happy hour. But I have always questioned why my bill has been so high. I do not typically ask to see an itemized copy of anything, but tonight we did and the tab was padded by $20 for a Salmon Special that we never ordered because we were told the special was Catfish (far cry from Salmon).When questioned about the discrepancy, the very nice waiter said he just "took the charge off" & "discounted" our bill "significantly". I fortunately had only 1 glass of wine, which is not a usual occurrence, I have several. After going over the charges, I noticed a "mixed beverage" tax. This was on top of the %8.25 we had already been charged. The GM shrugged it off as "normal" and then smugly discarded my inquiry. This is a great place to have fun, great food, chill with your friends and watch some sports .... but only if you want to get ripped off! First and foremost, food was good, server was nice and the atmosphere was as expected for a busy day as we went for the first time today forgetting the Mardi Gras parade. I regret not looking up reviews and also not checking my receipt when I was paying but this establishment uses a hand kiosk to check out so you can't exactly see a receipt. My server read out to me my order as well but the amount didn't quite add up but with how busy it was and my autistic son wanting to leave, i paid, got a receipt via text and left. So I noticed an extra "delivery fee" charge on my receipt unfortunately after I got home. Called and the women on the phone sounds so "confident" with her reasoning as to why they charged the fee. First thing she is saying is it was a technical error that occurred on everyone today that they 'noticed' but then said after trying to explain herself said it was done for the Mardi Gras parade happening on Davis today and to quote her "make it easier for everyone" applied that amount on everyone's tickets today and that it only happens on big event days. Her voice just gave off nervousness and timid the entire call trying to provide a plausible reason to my questioning of the charge. And now I look at a review on here days from six days ago and someone else was charged additionally too. First time going here and always wanted to try it as I've lived here so long and always passed by but after that "confident" phone call, looking at reviews and seeing and speaking with others that have had the issue occur to them as well on non busy or event days, I don't see my family or myself going nor will I recommend it to anyone either. It may just be $10 or $30 like the other person in the review but for some people that's an hour of their life and in this economy it's a lot. Obviously this place is thriving as it is because of how often this occurs and they get away with it. I have always been pleased with PhD. Even when the staff was a little slow. But, this really got me very upset. The salad was take out and with no dressing. When asked for dressing, they put in bag. Got home and found about a tablespoon only, for a large salad. Please get yourself together. I was going to use other words, but, needed to be somewhat polite. Ordered the brunch breakfast. Place was about 1/5 full, so not too busy. 15 minutes after ordering, waitress cane oút and said they didn't have potatoes and couldn't make my order. I told her go ahead and make it without the potatoes. 20 minutes later the order came out...in a bowl. I expected eggs with some sausage and and veggies scrambled in. Got a bowl of sausage, with some egg, cheese and veggies mixed in. So if you love a bowl of meat for $11.00 you might want to consider it. Personally I wasnt a fan.434343 Tea was very weak also IMHO. Came here after we failed to eat dinner elsewhere. As we sat waiting for our order to be taken, my wife and I notice three older guys hitting one three younger women. We laughed and joked. Then after 5-7 minutes, one gets up and takes our order! Food was ok. Nothing great but edible. Then we finished and waited 20 minutes for a box and check. I gave up and went to bar and asked another server for box/check. She said she will grab it for me. Another 10-12 minutes went by before our server finally showed up. Maybe she needed the union required hour lunch break? Of course they hand you a device to ensure you tip them. Wife was treating and is non confrontational (with others lol) and tipped minimum. Man, I really want to like this place. I actually like the veggie burger and fries, but I never really get a chance to eat them. More than once I've walked in, got sat, and then no one has come to take my order. Once we waited nearly 20 minutes before we got up and left, and this isn't hyperbole, we timed it on the phone. 26 close friends and family came together to throw a surprise birthday party for me which happened to be the day of the Dallas vs. Seattle Wildcard Game. Not only was the kitchen on time with the food the staff including our wonderful server , Miranda, was very accommodating for such a large group. Miranda greeted me with A Happy Birthday!! She checked on us and delivered on both service and smiles which made this special night a great experience, not to mention memorable because them Dem Boyz pulled a "W" for my Birthday. Thanks to the manager and staff who held it down for my crew. We came for the patio sports bar feel. We were pleasantly surprised when 30 minutes later a live classic rock band showed up. For an appetizer we ordered Mac and cheese wedges. They looked like dark frozen chicken nuggets fried in old grease. Horrible frozen food taste. They came with watered down ranch. Waiter said maybe they mixed too much buttermilk in the dressing?! They redeemed themselves with the good lemon pepper wings with thick blue cheese dressing. The best part of the entire meal was the sweet potato fries. They were the best, awesome. Loved! I had never been here before, but we were looking for a sports bar to watch the Spurs game and PhD had been sitting in my Bookmarks list for weeks. The screens were all up, so the entire area was open and breezy. We asked the bartender to change the channel on the TV directly across from us to the game and she gladly agreed. We ordered beer (great prices!) and some food, but before our food came out, the manager came over to let us know that a live band was supposed to start playing in a few minutes and offered to move us to the dining area in the back. It was so nice of him to let us know, physically move our drinks, and change the tv for us in the back so we could have a great experience. Such great customer service! I ordered the 10 wings for $10 meal off the appetizer menu and my boyfriend ordered the chicken tender basket. Both of them were really good and I really enjoyed my experience here. read more

My husband and I have been coming here for over 10 years. There is nothing fancy here but that is what we like. It is laid back and relaxed. They are always friendly and willing to help with anything they can. When I went through braces a few years back they altered dishes to accommodate my needs. We tend to judge other bars on this place. Not a lot measure up to them. I really miss going here during this pandemic. The first place we are going when this is over is back to PhD to sit at the bar and relax. Love you guys! read more

I've only been once so far, but jeez, Oak Cliff is really impressing me with customer service lately, and my experience at PhD solidified it. Even though it was raining and muggy and the ventilation system kept dripping on me as I watched hockey, I didn't mind. The bartender was quick with drinks, always had a smile on her face, and gave a great suggestion for what to order (the acapulco chicken). I had mine as a wrap and it was really great. The avocado was super fresh and the chicken was good quality real meat (not the reformatted strips you can buy precooked at the grocery store). The side salad was great - I had some kind of poppy seed dressing that was also delicious. My only real disappointment was that I so wanted to try their bison burger, but they apparently no longer offer them since they weren't selling enough of them. I appreciate that one of the owners came out to tell me that himself - You have to respect any business that refuses to compromise on quality (using frozen meat) because they want their customers to be happy regulars. I will definitely be back, perhaps when it's a little less hot and humid! read more

This update is way overdue... sorry PhD. I've come to really love this place and have spent more time here then should be allowed for the 3 stars I gave. What I love, huge patio with lots of seating, lots of tv's and live music many nights. Beer selection is always fantastic, many drafts to chose from! Bar staff (bartenders and wait staff) are greatness. This is a neighborhood place that will show just how diversified Oak Cliff can be. You've got the old couple drinking their bottle of wine at a table, hipsters with a baby, group of gay guys at the bar, ladies afternoon on the patio and another table of sports fans with jerseys... all possible at the same time. All in the same place enjoying great drinks and very consistent food. I usually order the chicken strip basket with a side salad... they don't do the nasty iceberg here... its a real salad and I love the cilantro lime dressing. I also get the habanero bbq dip for the chicken. The food is never greasy and pretty much always good... I'd say it's above what you'd expect for "bar food" If you want to see a different game, they will change the channel. You don't like something, they will take it back. It's a laid back Oak Cliff kinda place... someday it will be the "off the beaten path amazing" when Bishop Arts extends further and the whole area is overrun with visitors.
