He was meticulous with the cut and at no point during the process did I feel like he was trying to rush through it. Easy to set up appointment - I was able to get in for a cut on the same day. Before we started on the cut, I let Jill know I was planning to donate my hair. She was attentive and made sure I was okay with the length before she cut it. I didn't have to tell her much about how I usually maintain my hair or wanted it to be cut - she guessed it right off the bat and gave me some cut/style options. Jill is a great conversationalist & cares about the work she does. My haircut cost $50 - I usually do not spend that much but it was definitely worth it. Jill and Krystal came to Temple City High School on May 30th to help with the TCHS American Cancer Society Youth Club's first ever hair drive for Pantene Beautiful Lengths. They helped the club cut 10 ponytails in an hour! They were both really kind and did an amazing job. Everyone looks so cute with their new haircuts. After seeing so many donate their hair and leave the chairs with beautiful new hair, many other girls decided that they wanted to donate their hair as well. I love this salon and have been going here for years. My stylist and owner of the salon, Michael Lee, has never steered me wrong. Some appointments I go into the salon having nothing but a vague sense of how I want my hair to look. We have an in depth, yet brief, discussion where he uses his master interrogator skills to help me explain what it is I'm looking for. He takes a minute to survey his canvas and a few snips later I have exactly the hair cut I wanted. Other times I've brought in photos of styles I like (last year it was Keira Knightly in Domino) and instead of just cutting he explains why this style will or won't work for my hair and my features. That's a professional. We work out a backup plan, if need be, then get to it. Even though the photo is only of the front, the entire hair cut (back included) comes out great. He's also superb at color and highlights, as my mom and I can both attest to. His prices are completely reasonable and the quality of his work is excellent. I especially enjoy his gentle encouraging to try new and different styles. Why cut your hair if it looks exactly the same as before? He even offers interesting conversation while he quickly and precisely snips away- travel, Broadway shows, cooking and fine dining. You name it and he has an entertaining anecdote about it. This area may be off the beaten path for many of you but I highly recommend this salon. read more

I decided to find a new hair salon after last disaster I had with my pervious hair stylist. I looked through what help has to offer and came across PhD. Funny that I actually drove by PhD for million times but never really pay attention to it. Since it has nothing but good reviews, I gave them a call and made appointment to see Michael for coloring. I'm glad I called! I originally wanted blonde but Michael nicely and tactfully steer me away from damaging my hair further. He didn't deny my request but leave it to my decision by showing many other color options and giving suggestions base on my hair condition and the natural undertone color. Not only he knows what his doing, he also has a very good personality. He also gave my daughter a hair cut. Even though she's only 8 y/o, he took it seriously. After years and years of searching for a regular stylist in my area, I've finally found him...and his name is Michael Lee. I was actually led to PHD Salon by Yelp; although I've driven past it many times on Las Tunas, I didn't distinguish it from the other hair salons in Temple City enough to stop. Thank god for Yelp, because Michael is a lifesaver! I called on the day of to schedule my first appointment and fully expected to be rejected, but the receptionist let me know that Michael happened to have a spot that afternoon. She told me that prices start at $45 in the salon. A few hours later, I happily went on my way for my haircut. I'd wanted to get a pixie cut that didn't make me look like a boy for a long time, but had never found a hairstylist I trusted to do so. In fact, the one time I asked one to cut it last year, she looked at me, shocked, and laughed because she thought it was a joke. Definitely an ego-booster. I chose Michael in part because of one of the reviews that said he wasn't afraid to try new styles with his clients. When I walked in, I waited about 10 minutes past my appointment time because he was finishing up putting dye in another client's hair. I wasn't in any hurry and I actually appreciated that he took the time to do it just right. When he called me, he apologized for the delay and graciously took me to the chair. We then had a fairly long consultation about the haircut (over 10 minutes, which I'm not used to by any means). I brought in a couple pictures of Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, and Jessica Stroup's pixie cuts, expecting to be laughed at again, but Michael took me seriously! He told me very nicely that all of the cuts would look great, but that he wanted to keep it a bit longer for versatility & he didn't want to buzz the back of my neck. He also asked me about any problem areas of my hair before he cut it so he would know to shape the cut to fit my hair. After a wonderful massage and shampoo, Michael engaged me in light, easy conversation that I normally never have with my hairstylists. He really made me feel at home and gave me really helpful feedback on my hair--that it was of medium density, and medium-coarse. He also proclaimed that my hair was wavy in a way that actually made me appreciate it for once! He also cut at my hair with such precision that I started worrying about his next client. He assured me that he was cutting slowly and cautiously because he didn't want to overshoot my hairline in the back. When he finished cutting after another stylist had dried it, I looked fantastic and knew so much more about my hair. He told me all about which products to use without asking me to buy it from his salon, and then assured me that if I couldn't work with the style later, or if I couldn't figure out how to style it myself (basically my #1 worry with new haircuts), just to call the salon and schedule another appointment. MUY PLEASED I dread haircuts. To me, there's always a huge risk involved. If you've ever had at least one horrible, tear-inducing, never-ever-ever again, why-do-my-bangs-look-like-they've-been-cut-in-the-dark type of haircut experience, you probably know the stomach dropping dread I'm talking about. But I must've done SOMETHING to impress the hair gods lately, because I had a superb experience here. This was my first time here. I scheduled an appointment with the owner, Michael, because I had read so many great reviews about him. And let me tell you: choice not regretted. Michael is friendly, articulate, knowledgeable, and the best of the best (in my experience) when it comes to hair interrogation. He's like a smooth talker of all things hair. Oftentimes when I get my "hurr did," I'll immediately whip out my pair of trimmers when I get home and start cutting away in a sad attempt to touch up the parts that aren't layered enough, that are too long, and what not. Mind you, I'm aware that I'm allowed to ask the stylist to make small corrections while I'm sitting in hair-specimen-chair, but sometimes I don't notice until I return home. BUT NAY, NUNNA DAT DIS TIME. It's been approximately 8 hours since I had my hair cut at PHD salon, and I'm STILL checking myself out in the mirror and beaming. Oh hey theeerrreee. It's a bit pricey. The place is very modern and clean. The music played in the background is a very mellow. I had Pat and she was very nice and got my hairstyle like I wanted it with the shampoo and conditioner it took about an hour (: They take appointment so you have to call in advance. My haircut comes out to be $35 total with a shampoo. Coming from $15 the care and attention I received was phenomenal. However, I think I would have gotten the same haircut at a $15 place. My friend referred me to PHD Salon to get my hair & makeup done for prom. I was a bit hesitant about the makeup part because people told me how hair stylists might not be really good at makeup since they're known for hair. But Krystal proved me wrong. She did my hair and makeup and I'm super satisfied with it!! I went from 0-100 in about an hour and a half. I told her that I wanted a natural faced makeup and I really liked how it came out. My biggest fear is having my makeup look crusty or cake-y on me. Hah, ya girl's makeup was glam af on prom night! I didn't crack at all. I also loved how my hair came out! I liked how she tucked in my bangs to the side to soften my look. Thank you, Krystal! I'll see you next time. I have seen Pat twice and both times she has done an awesome job on my hair. It looks so great and is very easy to style. I also took my daughter to her for her birthday to have highlights and a trim. She did a great job on her as well. Their prices are not cheap but I feel they are reasonable for what they do. First of all, the receptionist who welcomes you into the store is very courteous and sweet and offers you water upon entering the salon. Since coming here, I have always requested for Michael to be my hair dresser because he is the owner of the store, and he has a wonderful personality. I can't speak for the other hair stylist, but since Michael chose them, I think I would feel safe leaving my hair in their shears. HOWEVER, Michael is beyond a shred of a doubt the most wonderful hair dresser I have ever had. After only one hair cut, he remembered me for my second visit and even remembered some of the small conversation topics we had. He always gives a very in depth and thorough explanation of what he intends to do to your hair, and that is such a blessing since I have always suffered the typical Asian hair dresser stereotype of cutting off WAY too much. Michael listens to what you want and intends to accommodate all of your concerns. He walks you through every step of the hair cutting process and asks you to come back within the week if later on you decide that you don't like something about the cut or have trouble styling on your own. Long story short, Michael made my frizzy, thick asian hair exactly how I wanted it and I ALWAYS get compliments on how it looks. For the $55 price tag, I think Michael makes every dollar feel well spent. Anyways, he is the only person from now on that I trust with my hair. One extra tip is that I'm the sort of person that has very specific instructions for how I want my hair to be styled, and Michael follows through with each demand beautifully. However, for people who do not know what they want, Michael has some wonderful suggestions and is very honest with his input. Just make sure to be open with him, and with any of the other stylists for that matter because they are definitely making your wishes a priority! read more

I've been going to this salon for many years and have always had a great experience. Not only is the salon extremely clean and relaxing, the entire staff is super friendly and accommodating. I've had my hair color, highlighted, and cut by Michael, Pat, and Jill throughout the years and they are always so attentive and knowledgeable about what to do. I usually opt for a similar cut, since I'm more into looking neat and proper not necessarily fashionable. He listens to what you want, so if you want to get rid of the length he certainly will. My boyfriend has very short hair, so his styles vary more often. He does movie background work, so Michael will cut his hair to suit the picture or era. I love this salon! I have really long hair and decided that I wanted to cut off 6 inches. I am really picky about my hair salons mainly because, like many other girls, I have trust issues with many hairdressers. I decided to give this salon a chance due to the amazing reviews I have read on here. Needless to say, the service was AMAZING. When I entered, Krystal came over to me and introduced herself. I came without an appointment and she asked me if I would be able to return tomorrow. I told her I couldn't because I needed the haircut for a birthday party - a party in which all of my friends were going to cut their long hairs short like mine. Silly, right? Anyway, Krystal was surprisingly very accommodating! She washed my hair and I loved the way she massaged my head. It was very comfortable. Unlike many other hairdressers that I have went to in the past, Krystal actually looked at my reference photo and asked specific questions like "I see that her hair is kind of layered here..do you want it layered like that?" Afterwards, she began cutting my hair. I felt comfortable with her because she was so easy to talk to. The entire process took around an hour because I had really thick hair. I loved my haircut for the first time ever! It was extremely short but I loved the change! However, I did not rate this a 5 star because I told Krystal I did not want layers and that I wanted my hair to end the same length. However, when the process was done, I realized the the sides of my hair were longer than the middle part. It was not the style I asked for, and I think Krystal realized it when she was done because she said "if you end up not liking your hairstyle, you can always come back and we'll arrange it to your liking--for free!" which made me feel so much more safe & comfortable. HOWEVER, I never returned to take advantage of her offer because when I went home, I realized how amazing my hair actually looked.
