This bar gets five stars for being such a chill atmosphere and having such a welcoming vibe. They're so flexible and chill. They let my friend host a birthday party outside. They let us serve food from a local pizza shop, and folks just order drinks from the bar. They also had a pool table and a dart board that was free for people to use. Just such a nice place to go visit where you don't have to worry about people with strict rules about how to enjoy yourself and host your friends. Came here with some friends on a Saturday night, and it's a super cute spot! There's a pool table, darts, and plenty of room to hang out. The bartenders are all from Ireland, which makes this Irish bar the real deal. I wasn't in the mood for alcohol, so I got a cranberry soda with lime, and the bartender brought the drinks to my friends and I quickly. It's a simple combination but delicious! Also, my friend recommended to me the cheesy onion potato chips, which I had to try. They were really good and cheap if you're looking for a bar snack. They only sell chips for food, though, but you can bring in outside food if needed. I'm happy I went here and will definitely be back again! read more

I love me a good Irish bar! They have an extensive outdoor seating set up that can even accommodate a large group. There are TVs set up outside too. They've made great use of the outdoor space. So if you're still a bit put off by indoor seating, this is the bar for you. It's busy but never loud and the staff is just the right amount of attentive. They also have the best chips I've ever had. I was panicking trying to find a good spot to watch the NFC championship. We had tried a bar before Phil Hughes that required each person to commit to paying $50. When we got to Phil Hughes we decided it was the perfect spot, lots of tables and a friendly bartender. Even though the bar filled up, the bartender was able to quickly fill orders and we loved that we could bring food in with us. Definitely will be returning to this fun spot! read more

My boyfriend and I walk in and sit at the end of the bar near the door. There is one man to the right of us and one man to the left, both with empty glasses. The bartender is on his phone at the other end of the bar. Besides the four of us waiting to order, there are maybe three other people in a group, sat on the side of the bar near the bartender. The four of us wait for a time, so awkwardly long, that the two gentlemen start making excuses for the bartender, as we all acknowledge: this is a long time to wait for this man to look up from his phone and do his job. As I wait I look around the bar and notice a mouse scurry by. But by this point he's finally noticed us and is in the midst of getting our drink. I kept quiet and brushed it off, gross, I know. When we ask to pay for the two beers we ordered the bartender tells us: cash only. Neither of us had cash so he then tells about the ATM in the back. We told him there was no signage to indicate this was a cash only establishment. He also did not let us know they only took cash when we ordered. He responds with "we've been around for sixty five years." We had no choice but to use their sketch ass ATM, at a fee, to pay our tab, for which he didn't even print a receipt for us, instead just pulling a number from thin air and calling it the price of our round. 0/10 experience, and we will not return. read more

Really cute find on the UES! I honestly wouldn't have found this place if it weren't for its outdoor dining setup catching my eye. There are no heaters but the tent set up blocks the wind just fine for a happy hour or warmer evening. Drinks are small and inexpensive but strong! It's really nice if you really just want drinks somewhere and not forced to fall into the trap of food requirements because they actually have a small chips and salsa appetizer for $3 to satisfy the requirement. Only small problem here is that they are cash only, which a lot of us don't remember to carry during pandemic times but otherwise I will definitely go back! read more

Well, looks like they finally put some money into this place and put in a new front door. The old door was a solid steel type that made this place look like a prison or strip club, while this new one is made mostly of glass and is wider. Gives it more of an inviting looking feel. Still, Phil Hughes is the closest thing you will get to a dive bar on the Upper East Side. Salty group of older regulars still haunt it. Good bartenders slinging decent drinks and a proper pour of Guinness. The kind of place you could sit at and swap war stories with the older gents boozing it up at the bar. read more

Yelp just had this thing in my email about 'dive bars.' And so all the featured reviews begin with 'I love a good dive bar and....' Great. Love to hear it. But somehow, when I see the rest of the review and the picture of the pretty little girl who wrote it, I have my doubts. Let them try this one. I'd love to see their review of a real -man's- dive bar. This is the place to come when you're alone. This is the place to be when you're miserable. This is a place where your cross the portal with the intention, the mens rea, to get skunk drunk and no one will tell -or even notice. I know, in my heart, this is where I belong. I step in once every few weeks after a very hard day at work. Others have noted that they're the youngest by several decades. I'm that AND the only guy in a suit. But everyone's nice. Beer is cheap and the cocktails are cheaper. Buybacks are allowed - an ever expanding rarity on the UES (especially among the Irish joints). Treat the bartender right though, ladies! If you do come here, don't destroy the abience of the place: this is not a loud frat-hopping joint. Went here yesterday and it was just what I was looking for, a dive bar. This isn't a dive to be ironic for hipsters to go slumming at, it is a bar for people who just want to have a drink and maybe some conversation but maybe not. Strong drinks and a bartender who knows when to talk and when to shut the F up. Sometimes guys just want to be alone inside their whiskey or beer, and a proper bartender, and a proper patron can tell. The place was plenty clean, had a pool table and some TVs and a juke box Irish folk tunes and Ave Maria. If what you want is a place to have a quiet drink and watch a game this is the place. I enjoy that locals--real NYC locals-- frequent this bar. The bartenders are friendly and the bar has a respectable selection. Sports on the flatscreen are the norm, as is (usually good, for my taste) music from the jukebox. The primary reason for 3 stars (rather than 4) is that this is a cash-only establishment WITHOUT GIVING NOTICE to the clientele. I have no problem with a cash-only policy, but there is no indication, either outside or inside the bar, that credit cards are not accepted. It's 2016; either accept credit cards, or at least have the minimal courtesy of letting your customers know that you don't. read more
