I've been a patient of the Philip Kingsley clinic for over a decade and they are the only ones that have been able to help me maintain my hair in the best shape that it could be. I have very fine, European hair and since my first consultation many, many years ago, they were able to prescribe the right shampoo and tonic that does not dry out my scalp and keeps my hair soft, healthy and shiny. I checked out this place because I read an xoJane author's experience here and wanted to make sure it was legit. It is very legit. Here's the breakdown. Trichologists - people who specialize in hair and scalp. Dandruff, dry scalp, hair loss, etc.... you name it, they can help. However, you have to book a hair consultation first ($350). First time clients will meet Liz, as I did, and she's amazing. I mean, consultations are usually boring, but she's very friendly and thorough in her questioning. She only works on weekdays, though, and they only accept consultations 3 days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday? Call them to double check). After the consultation, you get the treatment (usually $150, but is included in the $350 consultation fee - so basically, after the consultation each one is $150). UGH THE TREATMENTS ARE AMAZING. It's like 100x better than ANY happy hour. Steve or Dani will do the treatment - and they are amazing. Like, I cannot get over how nice the staff is there. Anyways, you go there, get seated. They serve water, coffee, and tea. They give you a huge stack of magazines to read there (The New Yorker, TIME, TONY, Lucky, People, EW, aka EVERYTHING). And then you just sit and let the treatment take you away. And um, hello, the treatment comes with a heck of a great massage. After the treatment, your hair gets shampooed and conditioned, and once you are handed a hair dryer, you're all set! Some people don't realize it (even though it is mentioned it on their website) - YOU HAVE BLOW DRY YOUR HAIR YOURSELF. It's not a hair salon, people. Get over it. Anyways, since going there, my hair has never looked and felt as amazing as it does now. I would recommend them to anyone - but only if you have the budget. This is mainly a warning to people who have extremely textured hair in its natural state (not relaxed). I have broken my review down into parts so hopefully, it is helpful for people who do not have textured hair as well and give a better idea of the overall experience. I have had short patches of hair for over a decade that break close to the root in specific areas. I have received a variety of diagnoses but no treatment has ever resolved the issue. I heard about the Philip Kingsley Centre a few years ago but put it off due to the cost. However, since nothing else had worked I figured I would give it a try. Booking: 5/5 I am black with very textured 4c natural hair. When booking the appointment via phone I told this to the receptionist and expressed concern asking if their trichologists were equipped to handle my hair. She reassured me that they would be well equipped to handle my hair type. The receptionist was friendly and found a date and time that worked for me within a couple of weeks. Wait Time: 5/5 When I arrived for my appointment the centre was very clean and well designed. I was offered water and a robe and I was seen promptly by the trichologist, Stephen. Consultation: 3/5 Overall the consultation went ok. We spoke about my medical history and family history, expectation, and the issue I was having, we also went over my bloodwork. Stephen was very pleasant and easy to talk to. I felt at least in the first half of the conversation we had a good rapport. Later in the conversation he asked me how often I washed my hair and I told him at most once a week, this is very common in the black community but he suggested I wash my hair multiple times a week citing specific reasons why. Even though the majority of people with my hair texture don't wash it more than once or twice a week I was desperate and willing to try something new. We also discussed my vitamin D deficiency according to my bloodwork. I told him that there was credible research suggesting that current Vitamin D deficiency tests might be misleading in black people because of how it is measured. He replied point blank that I was deficient however, I did not expect him to understand so this was ok and I let it go. Stephen also examined my hair and scalp and concluded that my follicles and density were normal despite the short patches and we proceeded to the treatment. The examination itself went well and Stephen explained what he was doing while examining. Treatment 1/5: I was offered tea, biscuits, and a variety of magazines during the treatment which was a nice touch. Stephen applied the elasicizer conditioner and scalp treatment on my hair while explaining what I would need to do at home with the products. I thought he explained the process well. He then combed my hair into a beehive style to let the conditioner absorb while under a steamer. At this point, I knew my hair would become matted because it was being pushed and tangled together into a giant ball on top of my head while wet. After the conditioner was rinsed out, my hair was shampooed. Because the conditioner was applied before the shampoo my hair was extremely dry/brittle and matted once all the product was washed out. Stephen then brought over and introduced another practitioner who I believe was in training and let me know she would be here with him. I agreed this was ok. They both began combing through the tangled, mess on top of my head. They'd comb through a random section maybe twice then move to another section and I could just hear my hair crunching and snapping. I told them this was not productive because if the hair isn't styled in any way after combing while still damp it will quickly shrink back and become matted again. They brought me some product and a comb and I began to style my own hair. Styling is not included which I was aware of but there was so much matting in the state my hair was presented back to me after the treatment. I ended up asking for a scissor to cut out the tangles. Products 3/5: I received products that were included in the cost of the consultation but have only used them only twice since my appointment. I have been using the shampoo before the conditioning treatment which works better for me. I like the tingling sensation in the scalp treatment but I'm not sure if it helps the other products have been just ok so far. I'm giving it a little more time to see. While the trichologists who work at the centre are kind and caring people, in my experience they are not equipped to handle 4c black hair in its natural state as they claimed they were. The state in which my hair came out made me question if their advice would be applicable to me. I was there to get insight on my scalp and hair problems and paid a premium for this. Unfortunately, the actual service ended up being detrimental to my goals, it took me an hour to detangle my hair, and I did not leave with any information I didn't already know. read more

If you have any scalp/hair problems you shouldn't think twice you need to visit philip Kingsley this place is the best. I was having hair problems and I didn't know what to do. I was looking into this place for some time and I was hesitant to go because of the few misleading reviews about this place how the people are rude and products are bad. From the moment I stepped into the office until I left I was treated like a queen. Staff was extremely professional polite and attentive catered to all my needs and made sure I was comfortable every single step of the way. The entire process from the consultation to the treatment lasted about 3 hours. Some people may consider it pricey but it's worth every penny. The consultation with Elizabeth was very informative she took the time to answer all my questions and concerns I didn't feel rushed. She recommended me products that were customized to my hair problems. The treatment felt amazing the scalp massage was so relaxing they even made me coffee and gave me magazines to look through while the mask was in my hair. The gentleman who was doing the treatment was thoroughly explaining the process step by step so I learned how to do it on my own at home with the products. My hair felt and looked amazing after the treatment and I was so happy with the immediate results. The consultation price includes 4 products and she recommend 3 additional products which I did purchase but I didn't feel like they were pushy to sell the products or treatment packages. The products also come with a pamphlet with instruction on how to use the products. Ok so I was super nervous about making this appointment and I had honestly put it off for long enough. I even went to a dermatologist first lol I just did Not want to do it! The whole staff was really nice, I'm sure they're used to people feeling a certain way about having to come here so they make you feel at ease! Yes there's a consultation fee, would I pay it again, absolutely! And when I called astound to other places looking for the soonest appointment, they all had one as well. The doc and I spent some time chatting, going over history, informing me about hair, what effects it etc. I felt like I was talking to a friend. It didn't feel like an interrogation like "what did you do to your hair?" or "why did you do that?" which some doctors do sometimes! He was so understanding and listening and gave great advise but most importantly he was realistic. Plenty of people act like they can wave a magic wand and fix your problems or you can take a pill but no he explained all the factors gave a realistic timeline for results and I appreciate that. You get a treatment that same day which to me is awesome and I immediately felt a difference in my hair I'm not going to lie. He even recommend products for my hair type and I could that there were many different product types but so I could tell that what was recommended for me was specifically for my hair and my situation. They do not pressure you to buy. They just go over what we recommended and why and everything that was recommended was used in the treatment which is a no-brainer especially when you feel the difference! After my previous posting, I received a call from the manager in regards to my posting... oh... I mean concerns. She reiterated numerous times that she did not bellow from across the room nor did she notice anyone else talking on the phone. Even though I am still unclear why the individual mentioned in my previous post was not instructed to discontinue her series of calls, if not by the manager who stated that she did not observe this, but at least by the technician servicing her if this was a facility rule. During the conversation it became quite apparent that she saw things differently in reference to my obvious observation and perception. In the end, I decided to agreed to disagree. Everyone deserves a second chance and I try to keep an open mind. Let's fast forward to my second visit to Kingsley. It was notably different. Yes there is $400 consultation fee. Front desk person who has been there for 26 years only treats male clients with respect and good customer service. But, if you are a pretty woman who is experiencing hair loss, experience is negative + disappointing. 30 years ago, I had an execellent experience at the boutique. I'm writing this review (the first and only) with the hopes that I can save someone from wasting $800+. The process begins with a consultation with Liz, the house Trichologist. She discusses your diet, looks at your lab work, examines your hair/scalp and then offers suggestions. That's $400. Worth it? No, there are smarter and more cost effective options with doctors and nutritionists that can do way more than just offer suggestions (see below). The next step is a treatment with Steve that will set you back $140. The "treatment" is their PK elastizer product with a scalp treatment, 3 minute head massage and then 20 minutes under a steamer. Worth it? Not really. They make you buy the elastizer and scalp treatment for weekly at-home treatments. The last step is where they completely take advantage of you. After the treatment is over, you are provided with a card that has product "recommendations." They aren't recommendations because they say you must use ALL PK products or they won't be able to accurately judge your progress at your follow up appointment four months later. You are at their mercy at this point and they know it. They know that you are willing to do anything to see improvement. It's gross. My product suggestions were over $350 and of course, I bought them all without hesitation. If the products were fabulous and worked, I wouldn't be writing this. During the first two weeks of usage, my scalp was inflamed and my hair was drier than ever. I read the ingredients and saw PARABENS and SULFATES! I couldn't believe it - I have always used products free of these harmful chemicals. When I reached out to see if there was anything that they could do, as I was stuck with $350 worth of barely-used products, I was directed to the manager, Aimee. She was terrible - unresponsive and unprofessional. My recommendations: If you think your hair is thinning, it probably is. Do you really want to spend $400 to have it confirmed? Find a dermatologist that specializes in hair loss - your insurance pays for it. I go to one of the top derms in the city and he couldn't believe that I wasted money at PK. If something is going on with your hair, there is probably something going on in your body. Find an Endocrinologist or Naturopath and have them run the below blood tests. Again, your insurance pays for it and they will work with you on supplementation - you are under their care, unlike at PK. Lastly, work with a nutritionist that specializes in blood chemistry. They can help you with diet and supplementation - you are under their care. Trichologists are really overrated. There is nothing they can do except say, "Yep, your hair is thinning." Don't waste your money - there are so many more effective options available. This by far is the best place to get a scalp issue taken care of. If you are in NYC GO! Don't hesitate ! Clinically informative and Steven and Dansila are very caring and educated on scalp issues as well as Elizabeth for your consultation which is one hour long. You get special shampoo and conditioner made and tonic that is customized and made in-house lab !! I am telling you GO dermatologists are not treating it they are just giving steroids cause they don't dig deep like a tricologist does!! Get over there get your scalp facial and get relief!!
