I heard this was rated as one of the best sandwiches in the states. I feel like that's a really big stretch. It's good but not close to my top sandwiches. We got one they recommended that had hash, cream cheese and lettuce. The ingredients were pretty good and went together well. Like most bagel sandwhiches, some insides get pushed out the back after the first few bites. The bagel is a little lighter than the ones you will get in new York and a little less chewey I think I prefer the latter. That all being said, it's still pretty good and the staff is friendly and quick. The atmosphere is nice but not super big so most the seats were taken when we were there. This is a particularly popular spot w a solid reputation. I stopped by today for the first time because of the perception that they often sell out. Philly has a lame bagel game but I would say that these are the best in Philly. They are for sure not NYC and should not be compared as such. They are excellent for the style bagel that they are. I'd suggest ordering online so you don't have to wait. The wait is too long, the breakfast rush hour should have been over with. We swung by around 11:15am on a Saturday and they only had blueberry and everything bagels left. For a bagel shop that's been open for awhile, they should be able to forecast how many bagels need to be made for a Saturday. The bagel itself, very small. The bagels are also dense and hard. I recognize we came later in the morning but as a bagel spot, the bagels should be fresh and soft throughout the whole time the shop is open. Lox #2 - generous with toppings, the dill was fresh and ample. The slice of radish was thick and added a nice crunch. Bagel itself, once again, hard pass. Pizza bagel- tomato sauce with melted cheese on top. I thought this bagel would be more creative. Maybe a slice off fresh mozzarella in between cream cheese with a pesto spread??? I think this place only got such high reviews because it is the only bagel spot in the area. Growing up in NJ, I guess I just have higher standards for bagels and customer service. I ordered a bagel with smoked salmon cream cheese, which I assumed would only take a couple minutes to slab some cream cheese on a bagel. But I ended up standing outside and waiting for close to 30 minutes. Bagels are small and the cream cheese was "smoked salmon flavored." For the price, wasn't really impressed with the bacon bagel (only a few pieces of bacon) and the lox bagel was like, wayyy smaller (in diameter) than the other bagel. I just want them to be able to toast a bagel. Seriously why is this business so against toasting a bagel. When ordering you have to specify that the bagel needs to be toasted. I strongly believe this should be the default but okay it is not so with each order you have to explicitly mark your order as to be toasted. I can live with that except they still won't toast your bagel. The last 3 times I've ordered here it was not toasted despite it being on the order and when requesting them to resolve it you would think I asked them to put pineapple on my pizza. Even after asking them to fix your order it will be so lightly toasted it might as well not be at all. I don't understand why it's hard for Philly to have a good bagel game compared to NYC. Everyplace has a caveat here for bagels. I tried their bagels on a weekend. By 11AM they sold out of every flavor except two...which is disappointing again. I don't understand why shops don't extend their hours past noon or have enough supply. Philly Style Bagels is a take out-only place. Retail space is small, no chairs, no space to linger for too long. Line forms quickly. The ovens are at the front of the establishment so you'll see your bagels being baked fresh. That being said, it is HOT! They have a small portable AC, but definitely cannot overpower their ovens! So you should want to get out of that heat anyway. I was disappointed that they don't have egg breakfast sandwiches.. most items are vegan...they have bacon, but that may be vegan bacon too? Not 100% sure. Cashier is great, friendly, good conversation, etc. Was worried about a minimum for credit card, but that's not a problem here! No minimum! I ordered a wheat bagel and regular cream cheese (boring, I know!). It was very round, small, and overly stuffed with cream cheese (I see this as a pro/con, but just wipe it if it's too much for you!). Flavor was as expected, texture was very crisp. I would expect this to be a high-volume time, and it seemed like it was, given the number of orders going out. More importantly, the two employees I interacted with were engaged, energized and quick. Couldn't have asked for better interactions! To the food. I ordered the BOA on garlic. Flavor was great, especially the spice of the mayo! Don't pass up this OG bagel spot in the heart of Fishtown. Despite all the other bagel and coffee spots that have popped up nearby and the ones nearby that draw long lines of people, this is worth keeping in the rotation of go-to bagel spots. I believe they still serve La Colombe coffee so head hear if you're looking for iced or hot coffee with your bagel. They have a good variety of breakfast and lunch sandwiches on bagels or, for the traditionalists, a variety of cream cheeses to accompany the many bagel flavors they produce. Cinnamon raisin, salt, and everything are my favorites. These aren't the traditional doughy bagels - they make them fresh each day and they are best eaten fresh. But that's what I like about them - you don't feel completely bloated after eating them. We came here twice during our 4 day vacation here because we really wanted to like this place. The shop is small, but cozy. There's only standing room, so don't expect to eat in. There's an open kitchen concept, so you can really feel the warmth of the oven once you step inside. This place is super efficient, working like an assembly line with 1 person at each station: taking orders, kneading and shaping the bagels, dropping bagels into the baking soda bath, putting them in the oven & spicing them, assembling the sandwiches. They have a good variety of bagels and spreads, as well as sandwich options. The thing that we didn't really enjoy was the fact that they don't have toasters, so your bagel/sandwich won't necessarily be warm when you eat it. We got the everything bagel both times we went, and each time, the first time the bagel was too chewy, and the second time it was pretty hard. Not sure if they were overnight or what, but the texture really took away from the flavor, which sucks because the flavors were good, and we love the concept of this place! The selection of spreads and toppings is amazing, and the ordering and preparation is quick and efficient. This is a grab-n-go type of establishment. There are no tables, no chairs - standing room only. You're steps from the park if you choose to visit on a nice day. They have Elixir Coffee, which pairs nicely with your schmear of choice. I ordered Sesame with Jalapeno cream cheese and an Everything BLT with Avacado - both delicious. I was a very big fan of the Jalapeno cream cheese. It was creamy and fresh with the perfect amount of heat. Price point is good, service is good, flavor is good. All good, man. Not worth the trip to Fishtown. When it comes to bagels, texture is everything, and texture is where these bagels were a big letdown. I like a bagel with a little chew to it. These were too bready. I found myself eating them up just to get rid of them, not because I was craving them. On the positive side, the bagels looked delicious. They were aesthetically pleasing. Whatever they do to make the toppings adhere to the bagel is good too. The toppings actually stay on. On the negative, everything must be ordered online. Some of us just like to walk up, order a dozen bagels and get on with life. Places like this that cater to the hipster crowd assume everyone carries their smart phone around with them and wants to bother using their credit card online to purchase something as insignificant as a dozen bagels. I've never experienced worse customer service. They messed up our order and then instead of saying sorry and fixing it they wanted to argue. And when I say they, I mean the entire shop got so out of hand. The cook came over and escalated everything after I walked away to wait for them to fix their mistake. Part of the mistake with our food also resulted in them overcharging and they didn't offer to refund until I mentioned that they billed us for their mistake. The saddest part was that the food turned out to not even taste good. It was so salty. But maybe they messed with it. So this place is definitely a spot to just pick your bagel up and go. There is a park right by it, so you can eat it there if the weather is nice. I ordered the traditional lox with scallion cream cheese on an everything bagel. First off, the bagel was pricey. It was $10, which I think is a little ridiculous for a bagel, there wasn't a huge amount of smoked salmon, so I'm just not sure what I'm paying for. I think $7-8 would've felt more reasonable. The bagel was very tasty and everything in it was perfect. The bagel itself was a little too hard for my liking. They definitely did not put out the fresh bagels. So the docked star is due to the hard bagel and the price. I do think that had the bagel been soft and warm I would've been enjoying it so much that I wouldn't have given the price a second thought.
