I used to love Phil's. I went on a weekly basis last summer. This year, I've been traveling and eating out every night for almost 6 months. I was excited to finally make it back to Phil's, but the experience was extremely disappointing. We got the Canadian Walleye with a side of potatoes. It was the saltiest food I've ever had at a restaurant. I'm not exaggerating. Everyone at my table tried it, and we were shocked. I would think they spilled salt in the batch but it was both the potatoes and sauce on the walleye. The server didn't check on us the entire meal. My boyfriend decided to eat it anyways since it was an early dinner and he didn't eat lunch. If you're going to go to Phil's (which I wouldn't recommend), the mushroom fries should also be skipped. The salmon or Phil's pasta are my usual orders. It varies greatly in portion sizes, but it was always been edible. My family members have had bad experiences, but I refused to believe them. My favorite restaurant/bar of anyplace! Not only is their food great but their service is as good as their food.

Phil's is such a great laid back place downtown. It's small and cozy but has an outdoor patio section on the side. The food is well above typical bar food. One member of my group has severe dietary restrictions and the chef created a completely custom dish for him! We were beyond blown away with the service and creativity when they brought out his food. It's great to see a chef who truly has a passion for creating dishes and isn't afraid of a challenge. read more

Waited 20 minutes for anyone to show up to the hostess stand or to greet us and there were two parties already waiting there when we arrived that hadn't seen anyone either. One gave up and left, the other was very frustrated. They had been waiting 45 minutes. When the host did arrive he got into a shouting argument with him, did nothing to calm the situation, and after the would-be patrons stormed out the host called them "assholes" to the other people waiting. Not impressed with the host, who may have been the manager, at all! We did not stay for dinner and will not be visiting this restaurant again. Very poor impression! read more

We visited here over the weekend and my first impressions? Incredibly busy! Was told 30 mins seated us in 10. Then the environment is lively yet sophisticated. I got a burger and it was honestly the best one I've ever had the meat was exceptional and the brioche bun still makes my mouth water writing this. I judge each place I go to by how well they make a "Long Island ice tea" let me just say..the best Ive ever had! My wife had the fish Tacos and she is a more demanding critic than I..she LOVED them. Always good. Portobello Burger is my favorite. Crazy busy during the summer season, but worth the wait.

I was really hoping to give them at least a 4/5. I got the half rack of ribs...they were fall off the bone tender but they tasted a bit old, as if they smoked them the night before and had been sitting in a warmer over for too long. Also, the meat itself didn't taste as fresh as it should have been, wedge fries were great and were fresh. I was told by a friend the fried Perch was very good. My sons burger was ordered medium and it came well. Taste was pretty good but it was hard as a rock. Bun was really good and you could tell it came from a local bakery or made from scratch in house. The space was cramped, loud and overwhelming. We had to wait and on a snowy April night there was nowhere to stand that was not inconvenient for someone. The food was decent. We got the portablla fries to start. The sauce was great. I ordered the Pho. I was expecting the meat to be rare but not cold and not cooked. It seems that it spent no time in the broth prior to serving. Traditionally, meat is cooked in the broth and not cold. Otherwise the dish was flavorful. Will I go back? Maybe if someone insisted. The space was uncomfortable and I would get something other than the pho dish. Would I go back on my own motivation? No. read more

This place is a f'n hoot! Great food and atmosphere! I give them 1 star because they are the most arrogant bunch I've seen! I've tried twice to place "to go"'orders and the kitchen was "too backed up" and couldn't take orders. The first time I chucked it up to inexperienced people. I asked him what this meant seeing's how I was on my way in from a 29 minute drive and he said I would have to walk in and wait for at least one hour for a table, be seated, and then order my "to go order"!! . Baffled is the only word that comes to mind when I think of Phil's. Been coming up to Saugatuck for 10 years and they've always had a long wait to get a seat so we've never got a chance to dine until tonight. You'd think a place in a town like Saugatuck that garners this much attention day after day would be amazing. Nope. Waited for 10 minutes to get a table which wasn't bad but once we sat down the experience just declined. There are zero issues with the staff or anything but the food was bordering on horrendous. We ordered the portobello mushroom fries, lackluster. I got the Cuban sandwich which came with chips and salsa (weird since that's really a Mexican thing to do). The sandwich and the chips were comparable to feasting on a salt lick. My wife got the blackened burger and it was an oblong shaped and possibly Salisbury Steak. It was covered it what appeared to be bacon bits, no good at all. We hesitantly muscled down all of our food and got the hell out of there, looks like we should have kept walking right past the door as we had so many times before, BUT, we finally ate at Phil's and can cross that off of the Saugatuck list, I guess... My husband and I stopped here for lunch on our way home from Saugatuck. I believe they are only open for lunch on the weekends. We ordered the goat cheese croquette for an appetizer. They were very good, ooey and gooey while the truffle oil added that little bit of extra something we needed. For an entree, I ordered the perch sandwich while my husband ordered the fish tacos. The flavor on the sandwich a little plain. It said it was lightly dusted in a dill flour, but I didn't taste any dill or brightness that dill might have provided. The tartar sauce was good though. I wish the fish wasn't quite so dry, but it wasn't too overcooked. My husband enjoyed his tacos. Once again, the fish itself was a little plain and could have used some extra seasoning, but the added ingredients really added to the flavor profile. The service was good. We went right when they opened, so it wasn't super busy and we were attended to very well. Overall, we enjoyed our time with good service and decent food. However, I thought for the quality of food, it was a little overpriced. Perhaps it was just what we ordered though. read more

I've been coming to Phil's for 5 years now and have sampled the menu too many times to count. First, be ready to wait for a table (unless it happens to be an off time), even in January. This place is not designed to serve large groups but will accomodate if you have 4+ people in your group. Second, ask for the specials. There is a lunch special during the day, there is a separate dinner special in the evening. If you are thinking about ordering the special, DO IT!!! The specials are that, SPECIALS!!! They are typically filled and for good reason. This is a great pub & grill. While visiting Saugatuck, we came back to Phil's several times. They have a decent bar and good beer selection. Everyone is really friendly and makes you feel welcome. All the different dishes we tried were done well. I really loved their gumbo as well. It was spicy but not too much. The food portions all are on these large side. The last meal I had was their bass on special. The fish was done perfect and it was really good flavor. Do not order the Pad Thai Scallops. This dish was inedible. We noticed that our host wasn't eating much of it so the three Of us tried it. We agreed, it was inedible. Chef needs to improve it. Cut the soy sauce by 2/3 or take it off the menu. Our buddy loves scallops so he made hard work of eating them though he was disappointed with how they were prepared -- fried and burned around the edges. Need I say more. Perch and walleye dinners were cold upon delivery to the table. We think our waitress may have held them in the kitchen so we could finish our salads? Weak. Ambience is terrific. The tuna was seared perfectly and the pico de gyo was light and flavorful. We didn't try any desert but plan to give it a shot on our next visit. We didn't have any trouble getting right in for an early Saturday evening dinner. The place isn't huge so that likely isn't the case most of the time. We were in Saugatuck celebrating our one-year anniversary and Phil's was highly recommended. We decided to give a try on Friday night for dinner. We were warned the place would be packed and they don't take reservations - both accounts were true, but we also heard it was worth the wait. We ended up making some friends at the bar and once their table came up, we snagged their barstools and decided it was a good spot for us for the evening. I ordered a glass of chardonney (talk about a generous pour!) and my husband ordered a Moose Drool draft. The place was crazy busy, but the bartender was amazing and made sure our drinks were never empty and was there to take our order in a heartbeat. We ordered the gorgonzola ale dip which was a huge appetizer - the dip was amazing served with homemade giant tortilla chips. I was full by the time we finished so I skipped the entree.
