The meat had a good smokey aroma but I found the chicken and pork both to be very dry. I may have just gotten an old batch of each, as they also were not warm. We stopped here on a Sunday after hike. We had the deluxe sampler so we could try a little of everything. The meat was tender and had a smoke flavor. Husband enjoyed the local craft beer. A friend and I stopped for lunch at this local restaurant on our way to Asheville and got two sandwiches for lunch: the chopped beef brisket and the sliced beef brisket. Both came with two hushpuppies each, and a side of delicious and large housemade chips. For an extra $1.49, you could get the choice of another side and I opted for sweet potato fries, which are a favourite. Drinks are extra. All this food cost us $21 and change. The beef brisket was perfectly moist and tender, and we added their "Classic Red" sauce to make it a notch better. The chips were excellent, but the sweet potato fries were unremarkable, so stick with the chips. Servings were, for us, more than adequate and the service staff is very very helpful and friendly. Hundreds of baseball caps hung all over the ceiling and some walls, creating an illusion of colourful flags. A good place to stop for a casual bite. read more

Phil's has great barbecue and super friendly staff. The owner is an Alabama Alum and you can tell on one of his walls. The place has hats and license plates from around the US. People have apparently donated to Phil's collection. They serve local craft beer and other beverages. The potato with barbecue on top, Ribs and chicken are great option. Don't forget your sides: the vinegar based slaw is a must! They have an upstairs area for larger groups or parties. I was disappointed to see they no longer have their putt-putt open. They have several sauces to add to your selection. The Carolina based Vinegar was my favorite. read more

I really enjoyed my fish sandwich and my wife (perhaps too ambitiously) ordered the deluxe sampler plate -- I believe brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken and sausage, plus ribs. Oh, and mac and cheese and potato salad. A valiant attempt was made to finish this feast, but we fell short. Everything was outstanding. Meh at best. I've tried 3x now, and even when the restaurant was dead, service was snail slow and unprofessional. People comment about the hats, but seriously, have they ever been cleaned?! If you want to know what pulled pork at Phil's tastes like, go down to a beach, grab a handful of dry sand, and chew on it for a few minutes. I rarely give a 1 star or poor review for a restaurant, but this one earned it. Here's why: Ambiance: The ambiance is typical for these kinds of places. The place has license plates on the wall, steel siding on the walls and counter, and neon beer signs everywhere. The reason Phil's is so popular is because it's well marketed and conveniently located right off of Interstate 40. The building itself is a barn with the name on the roof. The highlight of the ambiance is the mini golf course. It's relatively cheap compared to many other mini golf spots and presents a fun challenge. Take my advice, play mini golf at Phil's and eat your barbecue elsewhere. 3/5 Service: The servers were friendly enough, but did not know the menu well. You can't rate the service too much because the only interface you get with the staff is at the "order" and "pickup" windows. The plastic silverware comes out of a dirty dispenser and you serve your own drinks (unless it's alcohol). 2/5 Food: As stated above, the food was NOT good. Mac and cheese was bland and mushy. French fries were actually ok and well seasoned. My wife ordered the BBQ potato w/chicken. I ordered a sampling of pork and sliced brisket. The potato was a starch ball and the chicken was way over cooked, had no seasoning, and no smoke flavor. The pulled pork tasted like dry sand and was only edible when drenched in one of the sauces. Brisket tasted like an overcooked dinner roast. The highlight of the meal was the "Phil's Pils" beer that was specially made by a local brewery. There was a nice sauce variety but none of them were standout great. You don't often see the Alabama white sauce but they had it. I wanted to like Phil's and give it a good chance, but this is one of those places that do not put pride/passion into their food. Cows and pigs deserve better. read more

On my way to Gatlinburg my stomach wanted food. First thing that I saw was this place. It looks divey and cool, but it is clean and pleasant. I liked the hats hanging from the ceiling. The staff was nice and welcoming. The place has plenty of tables and the atmosphere is cozy. Naturally, as a buffalo wing addict, I immediately ordered buffalo wings and got a giant plat with greasy, nice wings. They tasted different than the way I am used to, but they were still good. What I liked was the smokey taste. Each table has about 6 different BBQ sauces. I tried all of them and they were yummy. The way this place works is that you order at the counter get your number/name and then they call you to pick it up. So, there is no waiter when I was there. The bathrooms were clean and the entire place as mentioned above was pleasant. They serve all types of greasy foods and are priced well. I will return if I ever end up in this area. read more

We stopped on the way from Charlotte to Cincinnati and it was a much better option than fast food. I had the pulled pork with mac n cheese, potato salad, and hush puppies. I really enjoyed all of it. The pork was very tasty and they had six different sauces to dress it with ( I enjoyed the white and the classic, though I really liked them all). The hush puppies were out of this world...I only wished I had more! The Mac n Cheese was so-so and the potato salad was good - very dillish which I find to be preferable to the sweeter potato salads which are popular in the south. All and all service was quick, the place was clean, and the atmosphere a little quirky in a good way (notice the hats on the ceiling). I certainly would not call this place overpriced. Compared to the cue joints in Asheville, it's a welcome relief from paying $12 for a plate full of pork. The multitude of sauces, including Alabama white, make this one unique enough for me to keep driving out there, plus come on, there's freaking mini-golf attached! Definitely adequate portions for the plates. Haven't tried dessert, so I can't comment on the quality of their pudding, but all the other things I've gotten there have been delicious. If you are not sure what to get, try the sliders with one of each kind of meat; chicken, beef and pork. Then you have to figure out what sides. Oooh, the sides. Collard Greens or Mac & Cheese, Chips they make fresh in the restaurant. Awesome. Fried Okra is just spectacular. Then just the stuffed potato if you are looking mainstream. Most amazing meatballs EVER! I just picked up a dozen to take to my other house in charlotte for dinner tonight! Decided to stay and grab lunch and got the BBQ quesadilla with pork and housemade chips. Omg . It's huge and the chips are divine like kettle cooked chips-aka fatty as hell but delish and the lovely hostess suggested I make it worse with ranch .. lol. Amazing ! Phil's bar-b-que pit decor is actually pretty cool. The food, however, it's very disappointing. I got the pulled pork sandwich and my boyfriend got the brisket sandwich and they were both veryyyy dry. They only had one choice of bbq sauce at the table and it was good but you had to smother the meat in sauce for you to be able to swallow it.
