I've been to Philz Coffee before in both Berkeley and San Francisco, but today was my first time at this particular location. Overall, I'd say I'm a big fan of this location: parking is pretty easy to find either on the street or the adjacent parking lot; the seating indoors is nice and there's outlets and WiFi if you're looking to get some work done; the staff is super nice. If this is your first time at Philz and you're looking for something a little bit more special than a cup of coffee, definitely try their mint mojito. read more

I literally just left Philz screaming and squealing due to the huge amount of joy I felt while sipping on this BOMB DIGGITY creation my barista made. I can't recall his name but he's a black dude that's super tatted. He pretty much makes the best drinks ever, and he's super chill and friendly--basically like everyone else who works there. I always feel super welcomed every time I come in. I like going to a place where the employees seem happy and like they want to be there. Philz Coffee was always just a little to far from the work place for me. I adore the Mint Mojito Iced Coffee, and now that they have opened up on gilman it makes it easier for me to get my fix. Sophie, excuse me if i spelled your name wrong, is a very fun & very beautiful barista. Shes polite and was the one who prepared my drink this morning. At the last minute she remembered i wanted almond milk, and quickly re made my drink. I was able to leave with 2 drinks at the price of one. Thats what you call great customer service. Never tried Philz? You definitely need to try. They provide a different twist to the art of coffee. My experience has been nothing but perfect. I'm totally digging the Iced Mint Mojito. It's a must have. I've tried their coffee cake and ginger scone. Their baked goods has always tasted fresh and great quality. The staff here are also great. I don't usually drink coffee but Philz is an exception to say the least. My go to is their mint mojito which I usually get with almond milk and medium sweetness. I'm so glad they opened one closer to me so I can pop in when I'm itching for a cup of coffee. The building is pretty cool with a gate that opens up on nicer days for fresh air and sun. There's a private lot and ample street parking but that can fill up quickly at times. An alternative is to park in the Rei/Chipotle parking lot a block away and walk over Their coffee definitely exceptional. read more

Went there around 1:45pm today. My husabnd ordered his coffee and said very good. Actualy I like the interior decor(or design) there, very modern/industrial look. It feel much more nicer than a star-buck coffee and there are some outdoor seating area. And next to doughnut Dolly and Farm burger. Its location is in Gilman district, near REI and Road running sport(clothing), basically very convenience. But parking could be HARD to find. Just need to be patience. New place opened for students to study. Plenty of seating inside and out. 4 baristas that take orders and you pick up your orders from the same barista which can get crowded with foot traffic. Mint mojito is the most popular drink and it was refreshing. I cant shake Starbucks though. Great change for those who need a break from starbucks. read more

This is my favorite Philz. Plenty of places to sit, great light and airflow, super nice baristas, and a relaxed environment. Now during Covid times they're doing a great job navigating pickup orders in a way that feels very safe and mindful. They're coffee drinks are just perfect. great & apologic customer service. Lousy coffee. Let me correct that, medium roast coffee's taste reflects the coffee beans, dark roast coffee reflects the roasting - any beans will do. Philz' style is down right burnt, losing aroma and flavor. Got plenty of caffeine though. Your choice (my opinion) If you like it, and purchase it at a grocery store, check the roasting date, as I've noticed it at local groceries several months old. One of the things I appreciate about Philz is there is a general consistency to the creations they make. When I go to a competing coffee chain, I wouldn't bet 5 cents that the drink will taste as I expected or ordered, and that is very frustrating (even though they claim if you don't like it, they'll remake it for free - doesn't) With Philz' creations, I know I can always expect the same quality. I also love the range of hand-made drinks. Much much better than "we have light roast and dark roast and one special of the day". The only problem I have, specifically with the Gilman location and this really affects my enjoyment of going there, is the security of the parking lot. Very clear signs warning you to not forget your keys, lock up, and keep things out of sight. All that is reasonable and should be everyone's practice. But my experience and others I know is that the parking lot is russian roulette regarding if your car will be broken into; it's almost beyond the usual foolishness one can expect in today's world, and I don't know why. Still, I make sure I didn't forget my keys, I keep everything in the car out of sight, and the doors are locked before I go grab my delicious hand-made cup of ahhhhhh. read more

5 stars for drinks 5 stars for services $3.50 for a small & $4.50 for a large (price for non-special drinks) Their system is... order your drink with the barista, order food and pay with the cashier, and pick up your drink once it's ready. Philz Coffee! My recommendation would be for the Gingersnap, Mint Mojito and/or the Jacob Wonderbar. They have so many good options, but I have yet to try. Customer service is always wonderful here. The quality is amazing and the beans are all shiny and in well-shaped. The smell coming out of the fresh ground coffee is amazing. I can have Philz coffee at home now. Not ideal for people who actually love coffee (2/5 green stars) I can understand people who come here for their mocha or mojito, but for straight up coffee I find it unsatisfying. I've listed some reasons for this: 1. I don't think that their blending or roasting brings out much character in each coffee - they all end up tasting a bit samey to me. And basically mediocre. 2. It might be hard to find a blend that suits because you don't know what's in them and the baristas don't seem to either. On two occasions I asked for whatever they have that's close to a light-roast Ethiopian and both times the barista couldn't really recommend something. I'm also not into the idea of their "secret ingredients" - I want to know what's in my drink. 3. You don't have much control over how much milk or sugar to add - they do it for you. This still strikes me as a bit insane. Last time I was here we did three additions of sugar to get it right. For me, a bit too much sugar makes the coffee undrinkable - I'd rather just add it myself. According to baristas, they use heavy "manufacturing" cream - fattier than even heavy whipping cream, so watch out for that if you are watching your saturated fat intake - it has a fat content 3 to 4 times higher than half and half! 4. Considering all of that, $3.50 for a small coffee is too much - their coffee doesn't come close that of Blue Bottle or Highwire, etc. - I don't even think they are up to the standard of Sbux or Peets. Apart from that, I think people appreciate the happy vibe that Philz generates. The staff members are usually friendly and the café layout and music is inviting. Their food selection is quite good these days. I would not recommend it to people who love good coffee, but it's certainly a popular hangout for students working on papers, drinking mojito iced coffees. I'm also giving them 2/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * Coffee sourcing. From their website: "All green coffee purchases are traceable as close to the farm level as possible." We can infer from this that they generally don't have direct trade relationships with farmers and more of a commodity market relationship. * Their coffee sourcing report is pretty sparse. They don't list any prices paid for green coffee - they should be doing this. * They donate to two non-profits but it's not a lot - 5 cents per lb. of coffee (0.2% of their average coffee bean retail price). Most large multinationals donate more than this to non-profit causes. * I looked through many of their coffees - none of the blends available in store are certified as organic or fair trade or shade grown. (Their packaged beans from Peru seem to be the only exception - certified by Fair Trade USA.) * Environment: They say that they purchase "only from sources that prove they do not use chemicals on the Sustainable Agriculture Network banned chemical list." It's something, but if that's the extent of it, that's not exactly a high standard of commitment to the environment. * "We require that every partner throughout our supply chain has at least one substantive social program in place." This is promising but a bit vague. * Their dairy supplier, Dairy Pure from Dean Foods, is a very disappointing choice - especially in the Bay Area where there are many better supply options. There is no option for organic milk. * With their choice of Dairy Pure in mind, I'm taking their statement "All ingredients are sourced ethically and sustainably" with a very large pinch of salt. * They do have soy and almond milk (Pacific) and some pastries from Starter Bakery. * Waste impact: their coffee bags are not compostable. No cup discount for bringing your own mug. Some compostable utensils available. * What do employees think? On Glassdoor, Philz gets a middling rating - lower than Starbucks. * Overall, they are a still a fairly small chain but I don't think they rank even as high as Starbucks for social and environmental impact. The coffee has a terrible aftertaste and they only use heavy cream. I hated it. Yuck.

We were in the area after trying a restaurant we hadn't been to before, and whenever I'm in Berkeley, I always get a craving for Philz Coffee. Specifically their Mint Mojito Iced Coffee; mmmm. Craving it now as I type this. I hate parking in Berkeley though, and when I did a quick search to see if Philz was walkable from where we were, it was at least 15 minutes away... I didn't want to risk walking back and finding a parking ticket on my car. My hubby decided we'll just drive over a couple of blocks, see if there's parking, re-park... and if not, then.... welp! So we are driving, and it's more than a couple of blocks. Oops! Honey didn't realize that there is a second location in North Berkeley, and we had been downtown. Anyway, we had never been to this location as we're not normally on this side of town, but we lucked out because... there was parking here! And no long line for coffee. Walked right up, ordered our Mint Mojito Iced Coffees, and grabbed a seat to enjoy them for a few minutes before heading back home. I'll have to keep this location in mind just for the convenience, if we can't find a spot to park the car near the downtown spot. There is a man there name Aaron, of all the times I've been here I was never really satisfied with the taste of my coffee. It would either lack flavor, or seem watered down. This is the very best Philz Coffee I'v ever been to, and so it deserves an upgrade from my usual "Philz 4" (as in: rating). If only every Philz could be like this one! It's clean, spacious and attractive. And it also has that magic attribute that I see at most (but not all) Philz - It totally avoids the corporate look and feel. This always makes my coffee taste that much better. And, unlike most Philz, the people-flow here is excellent. They've even got a large bench to sit and wait for your coffee. This helps to separate the orderers from those waiting for their orders. Key. I was here to meet up with friends on a sunny Saturday at midday, so my "coffee jones" had been mostly satisfied that morning. I asked the very friendly barista for a recommendation on a half-caf option, and she chose a Jacobs mixed with a Swiss water decaf. Amazing. Best half-caf I've ever had, hands down.
