The coffee and experience can be good, but the baristas aren't consistent. I can order a mint mojito every time, made their house way, and the creaminess/sweetness is different. Don't they have measurements and techniques to follow? I paid 6+ dollars for a small mint mojito today and the barista put it in a medium cup bc she said she wanted to give me extra ice; not an upgrade, just extra ice in my drink. I'm not sure why they would assume anyone wants extra ice if they're not specifically asking for it. More ice = less coffee. I was able to get 6 normal sips out of my drink. SIX. I basically paid a dollar per sip. Extremely frustrating when you pay for practically nothing. read more

As a California transplant, I've missed Philz Coffee sooo much. I'm glad to see that the Philz experience is the same no matter where in the world. The staff was super nice and the space is very spacious with a variety of indoor and outdoor seating options. While I was working, someone came around and gave out samples of the food, which was a very nice gesture. Also there are so many outlets everywhere that you can sit anywhere with your laptop. My girlfriend and I decided to give Philz a try because it looks delicious and has really good reviews. We got the iced mojito and iced ginger snap and were very disappointed. To start, it was over $12 for two mediums, and they both tasted very watered down, I didn't get any coffee flavor whatsoever in either drink. Nice. I'm originally from SF so this is a nice cup of nostalgia for me. Not sure if it's official policy, but every single Philz seems to be decorated differently. It's not like Starbucks where they build them from a template. I've been to the Mission, Potrero Hill, San Mateo, Burlingame, and Daly City Philz and this is definitely the nicest out of all of them. Lots of seating including outside under a canopy which is great for those warm / humid but still rainy days and decent amount of space inside. Not the biggest, but not the smallest Philz I've been to either. The only knock is their waiting area is pretty small compared to other Philz. So for those that have never been to one, there's a counter where all the Baristas are who will take your order and make your drink, then you go to another counter to actually pay for it and order some food if you want, then you go back to the first counter to actually get your drink when it's ready. Often at the other Philz, they'll include some benches or seating in front of this first counter since after paying, you'll still be doing some waiting for that oh so good pour over liquid happiness .... sorry got a bit distracted. Bottom line is there's only one bench which will likely be defiled by some inevitable manspreading or leg crossing for days. This means most people waiting for their drink somehow gets mixed up with the people in line waiting to order or congregating near the front door which is just kind of a mess. Not a deal breaker by any means, but I did have to ask who was actually in line when I was trying to find the end of the line to order. Not the place to grab a coffee if you're in a rush. I'm obsessed with Philz. There was a time in my life where I'd order a Ginger Snap iced coffee every single day and sometimes twice a day. For the sake of my bank account and my adrenals, I had to slow down. So now I stick to getting it on Saturday mornings. All of the locations I've been to in SF and LA have been great and full of friendly baristas. The Wicker Park location is nice, especially if you get there before the 9AM/10AM weekend rush. Any later than that and the line will be out the door and you might have to wait a bit for your order. Thankfully, they never seem to run out of pastries which was an issue with some of the LA locations I went to. This particular part of Wicker Park is full of great coffee shops and bakeries, but I still find myself coming back to Philz (even after stopping at Scone City next door for a savory scone or two, lol). I was so excited that Philz was coming to Chicago after having it in San Francisco. When I went to order I ordered an iced medium Tesora. The barista told me for that they just give you the iced coffee instead and asked if that was fine. I said it was. I am not super familiar with the menu. While the iced coffee was fine. This is not what I wanted when I ordered. I wanted an iced latte and that is not what I got. To my knowledge you could order any drink hot or iced. On the website it says if you want a latte or cappuccino to order the Tesora. Compared to my experience in San Francisco this location is lacking. read more

I recently won a gift card through an Instagram giveaway and was super excited to check out this new location in Wicker Park. I was on my way out to the suburbs so I just stopped in but I loved the atmosphere and am excited to see the Lincoln Park location once it's opened. I ordered the Iced Gingersnap Coffee and loved it! If you want a regular amount of ice, ask for light ice. If you want light ice, ask for a few cubes of ice. The sign where the line starts says that it moves fast. It doesn't. So I've always wanted to try Philz and I never got a chance to try it out while visiting Cali, so as soon as I saw they have one in Chicago I rushed to it. While in line I was scared that it's another hyped up place and it won't be good. Not going to lie the flavoring in coffee made me uneasy like how is coffee going to taste with rose or mint. First off, the staff is so cute and friendly, they're def caffeinated and happy! Ha! We got the two signatures. The rosè and the mint mojito. MY GOD!!! Both were just so so refreshing and wonderful. I was thrilled to see that there was the soft opening for philz coffee downtown Wicker Park, so i figured why not go to it, especially since the coffee were all complimentary. when i arrived to Philz, there was already a long line extending to the outside which didn't surprise me because i kind of expected there to be that many people there. The wait to get my coffee was about 25 minutes but as i was waiting in line, the employees brought out little samples of their avocado toast, toast with cream cheese, and delicious croissants! Since all of the coffee were free i had ordered the New Manhattan, Iced coffee rosé, Tesora, Philharmonic, Ming Mojito, and Jacob's Wonderbar. Out of all of the coffee i drank it was kind of difficult to distinguish which one i was drinking but there was one particular coffee that tasted sort of caramel with hazel and that's probably my favorite. The only reason i give it a four star is because i drank way too much coffee (about 88 oz) and when i got home i vomited, which was completely my fault since i wasn't consciously thinking at the moment about how much i was drinking, but i would definitely come back next time i'm near wicker park. p.s. don't ever excessively drink coffee unless you want to have an aversion to coffee like i currently do ( read more

i visited the philz in california this time last year. it was amazing all around : customer service, quality, etc etc. that was five stars. this philz however is not. as soon as i walked in i saw the table with the coffee mugs ($12.95 each). i was picking out a color and an employee came up to me and my friend and said, "hey! just so you know, when you buy a coffee mug your coffee is on us." we were so excited! that would be such a good deal, and an easy way to sell merch. we pick out our mugs and go to the counter to order coffee, and i don't know if it was because the baristas are new or there was just a miscommunication, but i told her how i like my coffee (heavy on the cream) and she asked a series of questions trying to understand what i wanted in my coffee, which was frustrating on my end because i don't know their process for making the coffee or what the ratios are, etc. all i know is i like the flavor of the coffee creamer/syrup to be what i taste, not coffee. in my opinion baristas should know what to do from there. so THEN, we go to get rung up, and the girl did not apply the "free coffee if you buy a mug" discount we had heard about. just for retail/food business in general, do not promote something if all of your employees do not know about it or are not all on board! my friend was paying for this outing, and as she's putting in her card, the screen came up where you could choose a tip. 1) a tip for what? we didn't get served, we picked up our coffee, we cleaned up our table. they want a tip for doing their job? for ringing us up? 2) there WAS NO $0 TIP OPTION! there was a $5, $7, and $9 tip option! for real?? so she HAD to tip a minimum of five dollars for absolutely no reason! in my opinion this was a terrible first impression for the chicago philz. i would not recommend anyone to go check it out until they get their problems figured out. read more

I have gone here three times now and have loved the coffee. You can tell it's really high quality and worth the additional money. Be aware that there's no WiFi for guests to work and my advice is to not hang out there in the morning. They do not do espresso drinks and if you are looking for an espresso type jolt get ready to fork over some cash far more than a 4 shot Americano at the place across the street would cost. I was very excited to try Philz out because everyone raved about it. I'm also that person that is very picky about my coffee, so it was cool that the barista can customize it to your liking. The staff were kind and recommended me a couple beverages. I chose the philtered soul with oat milk lightly sweetened. The drink came out extremely sweet and i'm almost positive there was dairy milk in it because oat milk has a distinct flavor - plus, a not-so-happy stomach shortly after. My fault for not requesting it to be remade, but I was in a rush and it was packed. -1 star for the steep prices, but I think the quality is there when the drink is made right. read more
