Absolutely outstanding coffee. Longish line then you give your order to your personal barista. They do a pour over while you walk to other end and pay. A little hokey. But we've been in town three days and been there three times. The coffee was really really good. Tesoro and Turkish are the two I remember. Avocado toast was really good. Highly recommended. "WOW this place is nice and there's so much room for studying!" was my first thoughts when I walked in. The newer phils are so much more beachy themed than the old Philzs in SF. This one is so bright and vibrant and has such a nice vibe to it. I guess it's similar to the ones in Huntington Beach and Santa Monica. The line wasn't very long surprisingly for a new Philz that's in town. It was just 5 ish people ahead of me which wasn't too bad of a wait. There are plenty of tables to work and study too which is always a plus in my books. I havne't strayed away from the Mint Mojito so I guess I can only review on that. The mint mojito is just so good that this is the only time I take dairy in my coffee. I try not to drink it too often although I love how sweet and creamy it is! Happy Caffeinat-ing! read more

I had been hearing about Philz for a while and I was finally able to check it out. I went just before the grand opening and had a great time. It has a nice, relaxing vibe with very friendly and welcoming staff. The coffee is pour over and it's all blends no single sourced coffee. I love blends so this place is perfect for me. They do serve food as well but I did not have a chance to try anything on the menu yet. I tried the Philtered Soul which has hazelnut and chocolate notes. I really enjoyed it. They serve all of the milk or sugar for you in the coffee and are great at adding just the right amount. They hand mix everything. The place is very clean and simple. It was a bit loud in there but then again there was a large group of people all talking at the same time. I will definitely be back to visit soon. read more

If I could go here everyday I would. SD was last to get Philz in the So Cal area, but that's OK at least we have a Philz. Ok, ok sooooo really great coffee service. Imagine helpful baristas or coffee artists that are friendly and want to perfect your cup of coffee. No mixed drinks or latte-type drinks here, its strictly coffee purist coffee, sweetened and or creamed to your liking. Although they do offer a few specialty drinks they make. Look for them on the menu. Step 1: Wait in Line and look over the menu for your roast, a barista will call you over to the counter when they are ready to start making your pourover coffee. Step 2: Pick your roast (blonde, medium, dark) and then even more specific to the flavors, they go by name and list the attributes beside them (like wine). Step 3: Pay at the cashier (you don't pay your barista here, your barista is busy making your personalized fresh pourover) at the cashier you can order foods and pastries etc, I recommend the "toasts" if you're a toast fan. Step 4: Your Barista will announce your drink when its ready--proceed back to her/him at the counter/bar and taste the goodness, have it perfected to your liking--more cream or sugar. I wanted to check out Philz , but I have been resistant , opting to buy from our local smaller shops when possible. I waited in line for about 10 mins (with 2 people ahead). Finally got to the front , and waited 5 more mins. It gave me enough time to look the place up and find out its not local. I also started feeling frustrated at the long wait. I decided to leave, and buy my delicious cup of coffee down the street at Java Hut. No freaking simple plan cup of coffee is worth $4.50 with a 15 minute wait, just to get the counter. We lived in San Francisco for many years and moved to the beach in SD, when I retired, in 2007. I had never heard of Philz when living in SF. A few weeks ago I read a big article about them in the NY Times and their connection with the Zuckenburgs of Facebook fame and the rest of the Silicon Valley caffine junkies addicted to their brews. So we finally decided to visit them last week. My wife is the coffee expert, and has yet to find any thing that equals Peets, another Bay area coffee maker and seller. She is a regular at the Peets in Pt Loma. I only drink decaffe so I don't count. We found it easy, right on the coast highway across from Hansens surf shop when entering Encinitas going south. It's a great location, and quite a nice, clean, modern space, and they did their due diligence on the customer base. It was about 11am on a sunny, warm day, and the place was full with about 4 or 5 people in line. Lots of people taking up tables with their lap tops inside. Mostly young 20 and 30 smething, hipsters, techies, and affluent beach culture types. A few pet dogs, including our daughter's dog, Bohdi, who we are grand pet sitting while she is out of the country. Philz has two serious competitors a block or so away, Better Buzz, and Starbucks. And they were both busy,, and there is a Whole foods store close by and I'm sure they sell coffee. Maybe everybody in Encinitas drinks a lot of coffee so they can stay up late for the shows at the Belly Up night club? The good: Lots of unique flavor brews to chose from, and pastries, and they single drip each individual cup. The bad: a small cup of coffee costs $3.50! The ugly: and this is from Bohdi's (the dog's point of view especially) we had to wait at least 20 minutes for a cup of coffee. after about 15 minutes and other customers who were behind us in line had been served, my wife asked one of the servers "what happened to her coffee?" She said something about the individual drip process as an excuse and finally after complaining, it was ready in about 5 minutes more. Now if this was on their first or second day it would be forgivable, but they had been open over 3 weeks, and it is inexcusable to forget about an order. So because, my wife, the expert, said the coffee was almost as good as Peets, I gave them 3 stars. But Bohdi and I are sitting on the other two stars to make up for the 20 minute wait for a $3.50 cup of coffee. (the pastries could probably rate an extra star or two because we got them right away and they were delicious). read more

I was going to wait for the "hype" to die down before going here but I gave in as I always enjoy a good pour over coffee. Note: Not all pour overs are the same. The Jacob's Wonderbar was the roast I chose and admittedly it's quite a dark roast but has a full flavor. My issue is that they use basic coffee filters which equates to sediment in that last couple sips of coffee. Mind you my only other experience with pour overs is with Chemex or equivalent filters which leave no sediment in your cup. The gal who took my order was super nice and quite fun to chat with while I waited. The ambience and openness of the place is welcoming and the outdoor seating does look comfortable. It was surprisingly filling with an order consisting of one slice of bread, half an avocado, a boiled egg (sliced), and a sprinkle of zataar spice. I'm not a fan of order first pay after, and wait until your stuff is ready. It really is confusing when you what you think you ordered gets called out but it turns out there was a guy or two before you that ordered the exact same thing and you have do the awkward "oops wait uh, oh yeah that's mine...err..,thanks?" dance with other customers. However I can't get enough of the mint mojito coffee here. It's soooo good, very strong, rich, and flavorful with the sweetness of mint and bitter coffee base. I've also had the mocha tesora, and I loved it's flavorful taste with the chocolate and coffee flavors. I always get my drinks "sweet and creamy" too, since I'm a wimp even though I enjoy coffee flavors, I need to dampen the boldness with sweetness. read more

I actually love Philz coffee..what I don't love is watching the young woman behind the counter scoop out of the bean bin clearly labeled DECAF Sumatra when I asked for Ether beans. When I asked her nicely about it she got offended and said they were absolutely Ether beans. I ended up taking the bag of coffee I knew I didn't want. Stupid on my part. I got home and compared them to the Ether I still had and they are definitely different. The decaf beans are dry and taste sour and brighter when you make the coffee. The Ether beans have an oily sheen to them, and taste earthy and rich. So from now on I'll just order my beans on line and skip the drive to Encinitas for lousy customer service. read more

Philz never disappoints. Great coffee, great vibes. All the baristas are insanely friendly and seem so passionate about their craft. It's a great place to study, hang out, work, or just grab a quick coffee or bite to eat. The mint mojito is to die for, especially on a hot day. As somebody with food allergies, they are very knowledgeable about the ingredients in their food and take care to list common allergens. Not the cheapest place, but worth every penny. They need different cups and lids. Lid never stays on, and the cup often leaks. If they don't change the cups and lids, they should at least change their name to Spillz Coffee. I've been to Philz in the Bay Area (SFO) but my friends up there all prefer Blue Bottle or Four Barrel for the great baristas' latte art and espresso not available at Philz. Same 'ol thing down here...we have Lofty, Daily Buzz, Coffee Coffee...all do pour-overs like Philz, but also have great cappuccino and espresso. So nothing new at Philz, just don't expect any espresso machines or latte art. It's hot water over coffee grounds only. read more

Omg! I had a few days off from work for spring break ( I am a high school teacher) and my hubby and I jogged down to Philz Coffee from where we live. Let me tell you. The service here is phenomenal like unbelievably awesome! Every "barista" is reading to brew you up a cup of sunshine!!! You first go up to your designated barista and tell them your order and then pay after. It's kinda a different way of ordering but very personal and out there kinda fun! The baristas there are so open to any suggestions and know by what your saying they can make your drink PERF! After you receive your drink from your barista... they ask you "how is it and let me know if I can change anything" and oh m GEE that is so sweet. My husband was very impressed with the art work there as well he's kinda a hipster that's why we drink so much coffee LOL! Hope this helped;) read more

A quintessential SD coffee shop. The vibe is great here, replete with modern art, jaded hipster baristas, and plenty of room to work or read. On top of that, the coffee is incredible. If you're like me and you're a lover of drip coffee, pour overs and a straight up good cup of joe, this is your place. My husband has been to the San Francisco location, so when he saw there was one in SD he pulled the car over immediately while we were driving so we could check it out because he loved it so much. And it did not disappoint. This place has over 30 types of coffee to choose from, all amazing. I got the dancing water and will definitely be coming back to try out other blends.
