Oh my lord - favorite Philz location ever! Those of you who has been following me for 5+ years KNOW that I love Philz in general and have been to countless locations. With that said, I have to choose the Lafayette location as my #1 favorite because I LOVE how bright and spacious it is and most importantly they have the most amazing staff! I tried the mint mojito (with normal cream and another one with oatmilk) and rose here. I never had oatmilk before, it's a great alternative if you are looking for something on the lighter side. I love my drink super creamy, but for that summer bod, I might have to go with the oatmilk ;) And you know I always look for places that are perfect for studying or working remotely from. I was pleasantly surprised at how perfectly they have the space for it. Overall, this location is excellent for your morning coffee and weekend relaxation. First time ordering a drink from Philz! I was kind of afraid to try it because I've always been told it's strong and less sweet than what I usually like. I was so tired today and REALLY needed it so I went for it since it's so close to where I work. Nico made me an amazing Honey Haze and was super kind when I came in. I almost don't want to write this review because this Philz is such a hidden gem which I selfishly don't want to get *too* popular, but I know they deserve a review that reflects how truly wonderful they are. This location of Philz is literally the perfect cafe. I did not know if I would ever find a cafe that I loved this much--but I have. A few highlights: Staff: The friendliest of any cafe I've ever been to. There are a few baristas in particular that have truly gone above and beyond in their service. There is not one rude or snobby employee at this location of Philz. Some employees are so sweet I would consider them friends! As an example, there is an employee that always walks my drink over to me. Another once gave me & a friend banana bread on the house. Cannot over emphasize how wonderful the entire staff team at this Philz is. Drinks/Food: Philz coffee is always great. If you've been to a Philz before, the coffee here is pretty standard to that quality. That being said, the baristas do a great job of managing a heavy line and churn them out quickly. Plus, have asked for modifications on food and they have always been so willing and happy to oblige to additions to the food items (i.e., adding a banana). Seating: The lay out, location and seating of this Philz is *perfection* They have soft couch seats in the front and then more tables/hard seats in the back. The sunlight streams into this cafe throughout the day and lights it up in a really beautiful way (which if you've been to the Walnut Creek location-- you know what a Philz lacking sunlight looks like). Also there are seriously endless outlets. Everywhere you think they need an outlet, they have one perfectly placed. Parking: 2 hour lot out back. The only downside to this place is that Lafayette downtown is the worst place to park your car (meter maids circle around like vultures awaiting their next victim). That being said, most places don't have private lots like Philz (I'm looking at you Coffee Shop) so it's still better than most spots downtown. Seriously, you're missing out if you aren't a regular at this Philz. It doesn't get better than this spot :) read more

Solid hipster coffee. If you've never been to Phil's it's a bit confusing. You order your coffee with the barista then walk to the cashier to pay (and try to remember wth you ordered). After that you wait for them finish your drink and have a great day. Overall good experience. Didn't have trouble finding parking and the workers are nice. Pro tip: taste your drink before leaving the counter! They can fix/adjust the sweetness level. Easier to get it not sweet enough than too sweet if you ever have that problem. read more

Decided to stop by Philz for a quick coffee. Came in a little unsure since there were so many options but I decided on a philtered soul medium medium. It's situated at the Lafayette Mercantile, which is an eclectic mix of offices, retail spaces, and a few service-oriented shops. This location in particular, is the sixth East Bay location for its hand-poured, mint-topped java - their always & ever popular, Mint Mojito Iced Coffee! They are also known for mentionable pastries, such as the tasty kouign aman and hummus-slathered bagels - in addition to a plethora of vegan and organic pastries, avocado toasts, and quick pick-me-ups in their refrigerated case - which enhances a vibrant appeal to the ever-growing Philz addicts. The location took over the spot formerly and briefly housed by Homegrown Sustainable Sandwiches, which has off-street parking, and metered parking right out front on the street. There are plenty of signs outside that encouraging mobile order soooo it seemed like mobile ordering was the only way to order . Not to mention a big table across the entrance not inviting people to come inside and order . So no problem , I ordered online , but had to wait another 20 minutes since I placed my order online, well that's fine we waited . 25 minutes later, order still not ready . Had to check in with someone and they JUST started our order . Then come to find out we were able to order in store ! 1. Let people know you're able to order in store 2. I love Philz coffee and snacks, and ordinarily think they have good customer service. But wow, the wait times are crazy. I ordered midday on a weekday this week. The app said the wait time would be 32 minutes. I called to confirm the wait would be that long before placing the order. The person who answered said the wait was more like 15-20 minutes. So I ordered. I ended up leaving my house a bit later in order to give them more time, and arrived 30 minutes after I ordered. The barista shouted at me from behind the counter that I was 12 minutes early, but she could move my order up since I had already gotten there. Um, thanks? I was verbally told it would be 15-20 minutes, and now you're saying it'll be 45 minutes? For two coffees? And acting like you're doing me a favor by making mine before others? Very bad service. Walked in and had to figure out where the cash register was, as nobody was standing there. They said they'll be with me in just a moment however after the cashier walked by me three times and was more attentive to the guy complaining about his coffee order, I walked out. So before the pandemic I enjoyed going to Philz, because it was funky and fresh and so different from other chain coffee shops. The staff always seemed to be happy to be there and were cheerful and friendly. Not today. The person who helped me was stiff and bordered on rude. She seemed like she would rather that I wasn't there. First day of opening up the economy fully I would think they would be warm and welcoming to everyone. But the in-store music was so loud that they couldn't hear me and I couldn't hear them. I practically had to shout my order. I wouldn't want to come here with a friend to sit and chat to have a coffee. Maybe they got used to the pandemic non-crowd and so turn the music up. But perhaps they should change their mindset. I updated my review because they have made a lot of improvements at this location, and Philz Inc has made the cups much better as they no longer leak, which is great for commuters. The staff is a lot calmer than it was previously, and I assume they have a much better manager now. The young team making the coffee is really great. No customer service orientation. Totally ungrateful to have clients. No napkins. Even with nobody there was too slow, coffee was ready 15 minutes after food consumed. Overly rude about the way vaccinations and masks are being handled. Vaccination card not enough, need ID as well, then after showing all that and after eating have to put on a mask again to walk 10 feet to get your coffee, otherwise the baristas squawk in a rude schoolmarmish way I am all for vaccines and masking, but this is over the top. Love the vibe of this place. I'm more of a tea drinker so I wasn't sure what I wanted, so the barista asked me a series of questions and was able to whip up a really good cup of coffee for me. Another over-hyped, over-priced, snobby joint in Lafayette. I walked in mid-way thru the afternoon on a week day. Every patron there was on their computer, drinking 3 hr old coffee. No one in line, but at least 5 employees, trying to look busy behind the counter. You would assume, as someone looking at the menu with a perplexed look on her face, at least one employee would at least say "Hello, can I help you?". But, no. So I ordered an iced, small drink from a guy standing behind a register about 20feet away. He seemed annoyed I was even there. I'm a generally, nice person. So I'm very aware when there's bad service. I waited for my drink. It was not good. I ordered an iced tea drink, their pumpkin spice something or other, they have extremely fancy (pretentious) names for their shit. Please stop. When I order a tea or coffee, I generally already know what it is, don't act like your stuff is plucked from God's ass. It was so bitter, and somehow, the top of it when they put it in front of me, already looked unappetizing. I won't be going back. Thanks for trying! This particular space, next to what used to be Yankee Pier, has changed hands more than I can count on at least, one hand in about 5 years. So I'm not expecting this one to do well. read more

Super friendly staff. I love their mint tea and chamomile. I ordered the wrong drink last time I was there and they made me a knew one right away, without charging me extra. The guy behind the counter was so sweet and reassured me it was not a big deal and the drink was ion them. My fiancé and I came here for the grand opening of this new location! We love Philz coffee so much that we wanted to be a part of the ribbon cutting ceremony! What was awesome was that we got the meet phil the man himself. He was such a nice, humble, and funny man! The grand opening offered a great deal in buying one drink and getting the other free. ORIGINAL REVIEW (see update below): Philz isn't what it used to be :( the coffeeshop itself is perfectly fine, clean, spacious, beautiful, great staff... But since it's a coffeeshop, I give it 1 star based on coffee alone. I used to be at Philz next to King Caltrain in SF every single morning, including weekends, before they became a chain. The coffee then and now are like night and day unfortunately, and not in a good way. Originally, every time you would get a cup, you could drink it right away, without getting burnt. Now it's way too hot. They no longer use manufacturing heavy whipping cream it seems, because a coffee with cream only is pretty watery and has no buttery flavor, which is what made Philz unique back in the day. My hope is to adjust this review some day, as I really love the concept, and even met Phil once. UPDATE: After leaving original review I got an email from Shellie, Store Leader, explaining that the "default" proportions of cream changed at some point in the past and what I used to have (cream only) is now "creamy" and you have to ask for it specifically. Having tried that, I feel that I can once again get what I used to enjoy. "Creamy" is less hot and, obviously, more creamy. I tried that at other locations as well with the same expected and consistent results. read more

I am a loyal customer of Philz. This is the 8th location I've visited around the Bay Area, and I was sadly quite disappointed. I ordered my typical Mocha Tesora, and the drink came out the worst I've ever had it. The foam on top was cold and thin, and the drink itself was watery. Though Philz baristas always offer to tweak the drink if it's not quite right, it's hard to figure out what needs to be tweaked when the entire drink just tastes totally off. Perhaps it's a symptom of expanding too quickly, or maybe just a new barista, but I don't plan to come back to this location. Great as always however (you that was coming right?). Please the staff know (tube top you lady you know who you are) that the gloves are to keep your hands off my food. This location is so frustrating. Closing hours always varying. Closed 3/4 of the time I show up. Says they're open until 5pm on their website but closed when I try to walk in at 2:15pm...also constantly not putting enough ice in drinks or filing them so they're overflowing. read more

Every town in every city should have a Philz. It is just so different in such a good way. People who make coffee are nice and make sure you try a sip before you leave to make sure your happy. Lots of different options for coffee with so many flavors. Price is totally fair and expect a line every once in a while but it is worth the wait. What is nice about this location is there is plenty of parking. I bring all friends from out of town to Philz to enjoy and they all say "I wish we had this were we lived". Love that Philz loves Lafayette :) I love that there is a cozy sitting area in the front and a lot of tables and seating in the back. My only suggestion is if it's possible to turn off the air blasting on cold, rainy days? I sat in the back area and it was freezing. The vents were blowing out very cold air. I love coming to Philz and the coffee and food is always great. This was the first time at our location and the customer service from the lady taking our order was horrible. She was yelling at us and repeating things like we were little kids and not really confirming If she heard what we ordered. She didn't have any manners and was even yelling at other customers. On top of that, as soon as a white male stepped in to make an order, she was super sweat to him and all of a sudden had matters (my wife and I are Latino).
